Updating Album Themes and Narratives (Week 1)
Firstly, upon completion of the proposal, it is worth highlighting some of the difficulties faced at the start of the production stage. Between the proposal and first weeks back there was a real struggle finding enjoyment and compassion towards the project. In the previous semester the concepts for the artwork and music tried to encapsulate a wide number of issues regarding homelessness. The album proposal placed a strong sense of political and cultural meanings, and the whole process did not feel natural. The way the ideas were presented and conveyed had made it seem overwhelming, and much like trying to sell this project as a charitable project more than it is an artistic one. It became non-enjoyable, simply trying to fulfil the nature of the assignment, rather than using this as an opportunity for personal development.
Drawn away from the project, words from Jay Auborn have helped to take a look at the project from a different perspective. In a guest lecture, Jay explained that the concept should not take over the project but help drive it in the direction to make good music, acting as inspiration rather than be seen as a guideline to follow. The core of the concept should flourish with creative ideas, whereas here, the whole project was beginning to feel like a manifesto with no creative freedom, drawing the focus away from the music. To reflect upon this, and overcome feeling constrained by the detailed narratives, the artwork and themes were revisited into less complex and political narratives (see weeks 2-5). The changes have shifted the dynamic of the album, placing less importance on the personal goals set out, to do with the message and trying to make a wider cultural impact. Instead it was boiled down towards more of the professional goals, by structuring the album for the purpose of developing a portfolio, gaining some following and making connections to slowly set foot in the music industry.
“The whole point of art is about telling a story and raising awareness of something that you’re passionate about.” (Tovey cited in Medium, 2018)
