16 January 2023
Film: PLANE (d. Jean-François Richet, 2023, USA)
Forum: AMC River East 21  Format: DCP
It’s January, the season for dumping daft, misfit, and unhinged movies on America's multiplexes. Past years gave us THE LAST STAND (d. Kim Ji-woon, USA, 2013); SERENITY (d. Steven Knight, 2019, USA); and THE TURNING (d. Floria Sigismondi, 2020, USA). And now it's PLANE, a wild cross of THE DEFIANT ONES and FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX. If you're in the mood for something fast and preposterous, you'll want to grab this with both hands. Fifteen people in the house for this one.

Plane (2023)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Plane has an extended sequence of aircraft turbulence and peril that uses nearly-constant strobe effects related to flickering lights and lightning. Machine guns are used in daylight late in the film.
Almost all of the camera work in this film is handheld, with violent shaking during intense scenes.
Flashing Lights: 7/10. Motion Sickness: 7/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: Innocent people are murdered in this film. There is a scene that simulates a loud, very high-pitched ringing in the ears as a result of a loud noise.

Plane (2023, dir. Jean-François Richet) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
I may not outwardly rave about them as much, but I am a fan of action films. When they're done right they can be some of the most purely entertaining films around. Joe Carnahan's Copshop made my top 20 films of 2021 and it was one of the most welcome surprises of the year. So, when I first saw the trailer for Plane, a trailer that, every time it played before another film in the theater, everyone around me would scoff at or say, "Well, that'll suck," I tried not to just dismiss it outright. In fact, I was secretly hoping it'd be great. After all, Gerard Butler (who starred in Copshop) was playing the protagonist and, almost even more enticing than Butler, Mike Colter plays the main supporting character. I loved season 1 of the Marvel/Netflix Luke Cage show (even season 2 had its moments), and was excited to see Colter getting a chance to show everyone what he's got on the big screen. With all that in mind, I went into Plane with an open mind, ready to be tossed into a wild 1 hour and 47 minute ride. I must say, I was not disappointed.
Now, I'm not gonna sit here and say that it's as good as those movies mentioned above, because it isn't, not by a long shot. What it is, however, is incredibly entertaining. Maybe a little slow to get to the good stuff, but still good. Sure, the characters have practically no personality and their motivations are the same overwrought, clichéd, and tired beats that have plagued movies like this since the dawn of movies like this, but honestly who cares! I'm not here for that. I'm glad they've made some effort to give a sense of story and stakes to the movie, but ultimately that is not what's important to me at all when I walk into Plane starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter. I'm here to see the Plane go down, I'm here to see Gerard Butler fist fight a man to the death, I'm here to see Mike Colter hit someone with a sledgehammer so hard they're flung, like, 30 feet through the air. Who cares about Gerard Butler getting back to his daughter? Who cares if we don't give every single passenger on the plane a unique and interesting backstory and character development? We're here to see action, and Plane delivers, plain (no pun intended) and simple. I'm not insinuating that action films can't rise above the trappings and deliver something truly unique and wonderful (see aforementioned examples above). If they have something that makes them feel like more than just a piece of entertainment, then by all means, I'm down for that, too, but it's not a requirement of the form. There's a decent chance that it's also just personal bias. Something about seeing well-done action in a movie that taps into my monkey brain and makes me smile, makes me burst out laughing when something absolutely buckwild happens, not because it's poorly done or looks dumb or anything, but just because I'm having so much fun at the theater, and ultimately isn't that the ideal popcorn film experience? To each their own, of course, but I think that Plane did exactly what it set out to do, and I respect the hell out of it.
Score: 7/10
Currently only in theaters.

Here’s my new review in IMDb about Plane by Jean-François Richet, which is an entertaining action movie, which uses realistic elements to create action sequences and surviving moments in a much more grounded way to be effective from the beginning to the end.

'Plane' Stars Daniela Pineda and Remi Adeleke Discuss the Film’s Depiction of Filipinos
Plane hit theaters this past weekend. And if you’re interested to see what we thought of the film, feel free to check out our review here. While it’s no surprise that I’m personally not the movie’s biggest supporter, I do still admire the talent and work of its stars, and was given the opportunity to speak with Daniela Pineda and Remi Adeleke about the movie. "Plane"
PLANE: The premise is far-fetched, but director Jean-François Richet's choice to pepper the story with a gritty realism instead of a glossy spectacle makes it work.
With so many action films coming up short, it’s always a pleasure when a B-movie like “Plane” sticks the landing (pun intended). The premise is far-fetched, but director Jean-François Richet‘s choice to pepper the story with a gritty realism instead of a glossy spectacle makes it work. Experienced pilot Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler) is behind the controls when his plane is hit by a terrifying…

(It’s anon with movies!) i’m open to different genres except for horror movies and something too tooth-rotting romantic, and probably i’d like something made after 1990+!
Okay then, so I've had to remove a very big chunk out of the many romantic films in France. Below, a small list to see what you think about with no romance (except maybe a little bit for Amelie), as you wish and according to my tastes. You may know some of them, so let me know if you do, and if you liked them? I warn you that I'm not taking into account the controversy surrounding the directors. I'm only interested in the quality of the movies. I hope you'll find what you're looking for in this little panel. Normally, they are all available in english or with english subtitles.
But I have an objection the 90s were a good area for Luc Besson's action movies :

My Week(s) in Reviews: May 27, 2023
Evil Dead Rise (Lee Cronin, 2023)
Tumblr media
A bloody good time. Reflecting on it, it kinda feels like not enough actually happens in the movie. But at the same time, just enough? I don’t know. Anyway, I had a absolute blast with it in the moment, and just really dig this whole world/concept in general so... whatever. And yes, that opening title card is glorious. - 8/10
Air (Ben Affleck, 2023)
Tumblr media
I love a great underdog story. Sadly, the stakes just aren’t there for this to qualify as a ‘great’ underdog story. It’s a story that’s too well-known; a story whose outcome is literally sitting on millions of people’s feet at this very moment. But it’s a still a good underdog story, with a uniformly great cast. So, y’know, I’ll take it. - 7/10
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (Joel Crawford & Januel Mercado, 2022)
Tumblr media
I did not love this the way the internet made me think I was going to. I read tons of comparisons between the animation here and the animation that blew our collective minds in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but this paled in comparison (and not just by a little). The voice acting was fun and sneakily heartfelt, and some of the sequences were the perfect kind of funny or exciting for this type of film, but in the end there was just too much of it that either didn’t hit home or became immediately forgettable. - 6.5/10
Plane (Jean-François Richet, 2023)
Tumblr media
Inoffensively macho and predictable. It’s a movie made for a certain demographic; one that - while I’m technically a part of - I don’t necessarily fall into in terms of cinematic taste. But, it’s far from the worst way to waste a couple hours, and I watched it with my father, who is very much this film’s key demographic. - 5/10
80 for Brady (Kyle Marvin, 2023)
Tumblr media
It’s bad. It’s corny. It’s silly. But its heart is in the right place, the cast has great chemistry, and are in general the type of actresses that could make a reading of the side effects of their medication compelling, so it was worth sitting through to make my mother happy. Plus, yeah, I laughed... hey, I never said I was above bad, corny and silly. - 4/10
Living (Oliver Hermanus, 2022)
Tumblr media
It’s certainly no Ikiru, but Bill Nighy and the wonderful Aimee Lou Wood are fantastic. Plus, it does manage to capture a great deal of the same philosophical heart of Kurosawa’s superior film well-enough thanks to the pairing of the aforementioned performances and Kazuo Ishiguro’s adaptation. - 7.5/10
Enjoy!
-Timothy Patrick Boyer.
