Owning a Jeep and self-modifying it
It usually doesn't take the new owner long after getting their first Jeep to start thinking about making modifications. Owning a Jeep and self-modifying it seem to go hand in hand like owning a hot tub and soaking. You see other jeeps tooling down the road and they look so much more,..well, Jeep-like. You know the look "Rough and ready to rock on!" A lot of first time owners may wonder, "What do I need to do to get that look?" Well you can give your vehicle that look with 4 modifications.First, tires and wheels are a good place to start. Those stock tires are pretty wimpy looking and spicing up the tires and wheels goes a long way to making your Jeep take on a new appearance. You'll want to consider if you'll be installing a lift and how much of one before you jump on the tires. The bigger the lift the larger the tires you'll be able to run. Tires and wheels might be a simple way to change the look of your rig, but they won't be an inexpensive way to go. They can be downright costly! You'll need to consider your Jeep use before investing. Is it a daily driver, purely an offroad vehicle, or a mix of the two? You'll also want to consider how your Jeep is powered and geared. A number of folks place way too much rubber under their rig and then wonder why it doesn't respond or have any pick-up! Hello, you just added a few hundred pounds of rubber; do you think that it will have an effect? If you go with large tires, you might need to upgrade your gears. There is a cause and effect at work here. How your Jeep is powered and how you use it should ultimately determine what wheel and tire package you select. Consult with your local offroad performance shop if you're not sure or you need help. They should be able to steer you in the right direction.
Second, those stock bumpers really do need to go. Not only are they unimpressive, they simply will not stand up to an offroad beating! There are a ton of options out there from tube units to the rock crawler bombproof heavy-gauge block units. The finishes are wide and varied as well; stainless steel, black powder coated, titanium finish (the latest craze), etc. Bumpers seem to be made by everyone these days from small shops making custom units to major manufacturers like Warn, Warrior and ARB producing lines of them. So you have a ton of options! For me I'd stick with a well-known company that offers a warranty on its products. You know their bumpers have been tested, passed DOT regulations, and the company stands behind them for defects. You won't get any of that from a local shop, and even if you do, who knows how long they'll be around to support it? Warrior makes a good basic steel bumper along with tube units. Warn makes a nice Rock Crawler Bumper with an optional grille guard. And ARB makes a tube bumper they call a Bull Bar. All three companies are recognized for well-made products and they all have a very good reputation. I don't think you can go wrong with one of their bumpers.
Third, lift that Jeep. Raising your Jeep gives it a better, hardier profile. It really makes a difference. You can lift it with a simple lift system like coil spacers or lift shackles. Or you can go with a body lift or, even bigger and better, a suspension lift. There are tons of options from style, manufacturer, and Fan Motor Suppliers price to select from. So, do your research and be thorough before making a final decision. Fourth, you've lifted your Jeep and have bigger tires, now it'll look a whole lot better with bigger fender flares. The higher vehicle and larger tires scream for wider and more pronounced fender flares! The most popular these days seem to be the Bushwacker 6 inch extended fender flares. Their flares are made of a tough Dura-Flex material so they take a beating and are easy to maintain. They bolt on using existing factory drilled holes and come in a black matte finish that is easy to custom paint. Bushwacker backs them up with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Xenon and Bestop also make very good extended fender flares for your Jeep. Whichever flare you choose, your Jeep will look better with the extended type, and they'll offer better protection against the flying debris from those larger tires. With these four upgrades your Jeep will take on that rugged rock ready look. Don't hesitate to contact a local performance offroad shop or a couple of them to ask questions and get input. The people at these shops are heavily involved in the sport of wheeling and they can offer some valuable insight into your options.

2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye First Look: Possessed by a Demon
Hellcat is becoming a full litter for Dodge.
The Dodge brand, which FCA is winnowing down to a sports car brand, is building on the success of the Challenger SRT Hellcat and subsequent Demon by expanding the family.
After the Challenger began as a 2008 model. Dodge added the Hellcat for 2015, and the Demon came out as an 2018 model. “For ’19 we’re going to do a Redeye. It’s a Hellcat that’s been possessed by a Demon,” said Steve Beahm, head of Passenger Car Brands-Dodge, SRT, Chrysler, and Fiat for FCA North America.
“We’ve got a Hellcat body, basically suspension and platform, and then we’ve got the Demon engine,” Beahm says in an interview with Motor Trend. “It’s a little bit different calibration than the Demon engine.”
The supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 generates 797 hp and 707 lb-ft of torque in the 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, making it the most powerful production V-8 now that Dodge has stopped production of the Demon. It has an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Quickest muscle car
FCA says the Challenger Redeye is now the quickest muscle car with a claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.4 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 10.8 seconds at 131 mph with a top speed of 203 mph. The Demon, capable of 840 hp and 770 lb-ft on high-octane race fuel, has a claimed 0-to-60 mph in 2.3 seconds. Its 3,300-unit production run ended in May.
“In terms of performance, the Demon was intended for the track even though it was street legal,” Beahm said. The Redeye grew out of a desire to provide a car that would be out on the road, not just on the track or in somebody’s garage. Dodge designed the Redeye as a mainstream vehicle with a lot of the same performance features in the Hellcat or Demon.
The Redeye “is a wide body as well, so you get the 3.5-inch-wider wheels, more rubber on the ground,” Beahm said. It has Pirelli P Zero tires.
It does not have the Demon’s Drag mode suspension tuning for weight transfer on launch or TransBrake which mechanically locks the output shaft of the transmission as the throttle goes up to build and hold more power for launch in Drag mode, but the Redeye does have line lock.
Not limited run or special edition
Like the Hellcat, the Redeye is not a special edition or limited run, Beahm said. “It’s not limited to certain volumes.” He expects the Redeye to account for 7 to 8 percent of total Hellcat sales.
The Redeye goes into production in Brampton, Ontario, this fall for delivery by the end of the year. It will top the 2019 Challenger lineup that still includes the SRT Hellcat, which boosts its performance to 717 hp and 656 lb-ft of torque. That is made possible with a new dual-snorkel hood that pays homage to muscle cars from the mid-’60s and early ’70s and is fully functional, providing maximum air intake. The left snorkel goes straight into the induction system and allows the engine to give the extra 10 hp.
The previous bulging aluminum hood from the Hellcat migrates to the Scat Pack for ’19. Dodge is also making the widebody available on the Scat Pack for the first time. The R/T Scat Pack Widebody shares the same fender flares as the SRT Hellcat Widebody, which add 3.5 inches to the overall width and is shod with Pirelli P Zero 305/35ZR20 tires mounted to 20 x 11-inch forged Devil’s Rim aluminum wheels. Also for ’19, Challenger GT RWD and R/T models get a standard high-performance suspension.
Ramming the Hellcat engine into a pickup
The Hellcat engine also migrates to Ram for a performance pickup to go up against the Ford F-150 Raptor. The Ram TRX will go into production by 2022, according to FCA’s latest five-year plan. Says Beahm: “We’ve got great engineers that provided us with an outstanding engine that has a bunch of performance. The Ram guys think that’s a good fit for them to take advantage of it as well, and we’re good with that.”
Is there room to further expand the Hellcat family? “We’re always challenging our engineers. We’re always challenging our people on the marketing side to come up with what the people want. That’s one thing the Dodge team has done well,” Beahm said, noting Dodge has the largest social media following, on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram of any brand that allows interaction with customers. ”Our job is to listen to them, and when we can go down some paths they want us to, if it’s good for our brand, we’ll do it. That’s a lot of what’s happened over the last few years with Hellcat, Demon, and then the Redeye because a lot of the Demons are in storage rooms, a few of them are on the track. I want to see some Redeyes out on the road.”
Beahm also will continue the SRT brand, which pushes the performance edge, which is crucial to Dodge.
Taking up where Kuniskis left off
Beahm took over management of the passenger brands in February. He replaced Tim Kuniskis, who was promoted to global chief for Maserati and Alfa Romeo. Kuniskis is credited with taking the moribund Dodge brand and creating niche performance cars that generated a lot of buzz for the brand. He said his goal was to “tattoo the Dodge name into the subconscious of every performance enthusiast.”
Beahm is another good fit. “I started racing with my dad when I was 16 and did it for about 20 years and only gave it up because I ran out of time,” he tells Motor Trend. “My first car was a ’69 [Plymouth] Road Runner and the second one was a ’70 [Dodge] Challenger. Then I went on the dark side and raced a couple GM models for a while but I started on the Mopar side and whatever my dad had available, I was willing to drive at the time.” Eventually career and family responsibilities left little time for racing, but he still follows it today.
When Sergio Marchionne, chairman and CEO of FCA, asked Beahm to take over the passenger brands, “It was a quick ‘yes.’”
Dodge, Chrysler not focus of five-year plan
The latest five-year plan, which takes FCA through 2022, is focused on the automaker’s four volume brands: Jeep, Ram, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati. The brands overseen by Beahm are relegated to predominantly NAFTA-region brands with smaller portfolios and sales and fewer resources. It requires some spit and ingenuity to maintain older platforms and create new vehicles.
It means Challenger and Charger, as well as the Chrysler 300, remain on the same, aging platform, with sheetmetal updates and other enhancements to keep them as fresh as possible.
“Dodge’s role is to be prominent as America’s sports car brand. That’s what we’ve labelled it in the past few years, and I truly believe that’s where the brand is at today and where it’s headed for the future,” Beahm said.
Viper is dead
That does not mean the return of the Viper. “At this stage, as Mr. Marchionne indicated, the Viper is not in the [next five-year] plan.”
And although the Durango fits the profile with its SRT version, the Journey’s future at this point is only being confirmed through the 2019 model year. The plan remains to discontinue the Grand Caravan minivan when more capacity is needed at the Windsor, Ontario, plant that also makes the Chrysler Pacifica, and the brand could add a Pacifica-based Chrysler crossover. Beahm said his job is to grow the Chrysler brand, which may or may not continue to include the 300 sedan.

Jeep Wagoneer Roadtrip Concept Is an Ode to a Past Era
-
The Jeep Wagoneer Roadtrip is a nod to the family vehicle of generations past and a time before terms such as minivan and crossover had entered the automotive lexicon.
-
The folks at Jeep expertly transformed this classic SUV, which started life as an ordinary 1965 Wagoneer, into a modern restomod. Along with a five-inch wheelbase stretch, the Wagoneer Roadtrip benefits from a pair of Dana 44 axles and a modern coil-spring suspension setup. Assisting the Wagoneer Roadtrip in its off-road ambitions are a set of 17-inch wheels wearing 33-inch-tall BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tires.
-
-
In order to accommodate the meaty rubber and a wider track, the Roadtrip has custom-made fender flares and modified wheel wells. FCA also tweaked the Jeep’s looks with a later grille, new front and rear bumpers, and green architectural glass in place of the original windows.
-
Like its exterior, the Wagoneer Roadtrip’s interior is steeped in nostalgia. The original front and rear bench seats have been retained and are upholstered in a deep red leather. Above is a wicker headliner, and in back is a cooler made from 1960s luggage and a toolbox fashioned from the valve cover of this Wagoneer’s original 3.8-liter inline-six engine.
-
In place of that straight-six, the Wagoneer Roadtrip is motivated by a contemporary 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 paired to a four-speed automatic transmission.

-
While the Jeep Wagoneer Roadtrip may only be a one-off concept, we’re crossing our fingers that this classic SUV manages to properly inspire those working on the forthcoming Jeep Grand Wagoneer flagship SUV. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time a classic Moab Easter Jeep Safari concept influenced a production Jeep model.

Road Tests: 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4X4 squared
Vital Statistics
Engine: 4.0 liter
Horsepower: 416
Torque: 450 lb-ft.
0-60 mph: 6.5 seconds
1/4 mile: 15.1 seconds @ 91 mph
EPA: 11 mpg city/ 11 mpg highway
Energy Impact: 30.0 barrels of oil/yr
CO2 Emissions: 13.7 tons/yr
The original Jeep was the first military vehicle that found widespread popularity in civilian dress. Then came the Hum-Vee, which also spawned GM’s hummer brand of over-the-top 4x4s. Still, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or G-Wagen, stands apart. Now in production for almost 40-years, the “Gelandewagon” has long since left its military side behind, and become the pinnacle of Mercedes exclusivity.
Whether it’s our own Jeep and Hummer, Japan’s Land Cruiser, or Britain’s Land Rover, every developed country seems to have a battle-ready vehicle built to conquer both enemy territory as well as suburbia. For almost 40 years in Germany that role has been played by the Mercedes-Benz G-wagen, or as it’s now known, the G-Class.
As has always been the case with all of these military-inspired utes, the G-Class has become more-and-more popular, continuing to grow more user-friendly, with ever increasing levels of comfort and luxury.
But then every once in a while, engineers seem intent on proving that these leather-lined rigs are built for a lot more than just trolling country clubs or making a statement in the carpool lane. Thus, we get special versions like this 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4X4 squared.
It’s large, in charge, and towers over just about everything on the road. Yet despite the massive rolling stock, jacked-up suspension, and high center of gravity; steering remains responsive, and there’s very minimal wandering, even at highway speeds. Of course there’s not much sidewall flexing with these 22-inch wheels wearing 325/55 Pirelli Scorpion A/Ts either. Overall, it feels more tame and confident, than macho or overbearing.
Moving this behemoth around is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that delivers 416–horsepower and 450 lb-ft. of torque. It feels fantastically powerful, just adding to the assertive nature that this truck gives you.
We let it loose at our test track and hit 60 in just 6.5-seconds. For reference that’s over 3 seconds faster than the last Hummer H2 we tested. There’s enough low end grunt at launch to spin these 22s up a bit, but not enough to make it too difficult to get away cleanly.
Plenty of mid-range beef keeps it moving, while the 7G-Tronic automatic clicks through gears quickly and firmly. It’s easy to forget you’re riding so high off the ground, as the ¼-mile flies by in 15.1-seconds and 91 miles-per-hour.
Perhaps more impressively, the 4X4 squared will stop from 60 in just 112-feet. Pretty amazing considering it weighs an astounding 6,700-lbs.
But, on to what this thing is really all about, off road supremacy.  Mercedes has taken the already capable G-wagen to the ultimate extreme, and it all starts with new portal axles.
The quick and dirty way of explaining what they are, for those of you who don’t read Crazy Offroad Vehicle Weekly; is the rear differential and axles, instead of being directly inboard of the wheels, are mounted much higher, up in the frame. And power gets down to the wheels through a set of gears.  It allows for a whopping 17-inches of ground clearance; that’s about 10-inches over a stock G-class.
All three differentials can be locked, and while there is some electrical assistance, it’s nothing like a nearly automated Land Rover. Here, you pretty much take control of everything.
After two weeks of blasting around hill and dale in this beast, we found it hard not to be nervous about tearing up the terrain in this thing. But, it seemed to laugh off the worst we could muster around here. Our biggest test complaints come down to defaulting to eco power and comfort suspension every time you power it up, and the awkwardly low hanging rear bumper obviously done for compliance sake.
Once you manage the extremely high up entry, you’ll find nothing lacking in creature comforts. This brute is every bit a Mercedes-Benz; whether you’re talking about the quilted leather upholstery, climate-controlled seats, or features like navigation and onboard WiFi.
The boxy Bronco-ish body gets a lift of its own; while fender flares get serious extensions to cover all of that rubber.
And yes, Government Fuel Economy Ratings are as abysmal as you expect, 11-City, 11-Highway, and 11-Combined. Hey, at least they’re consistent. Somehow, we managed to eke out 13.3 miles-per-gallon on Premium.
The Energy Impact Score is about as bad as it gets too, burning through 30.0-barrels of oil every year, and emitting 13.7-tons of CO2.
By far, the worse numbers are the OMG prices. While you can get into a base G550 for $123,325, you’ll have to pony up at least $225,925 to get squared. Of course, you could build an equally capable Wrangler for half of that, but that’s not exactly the point of this rig now is it?
So, what is the point of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4X4 squared?  Well, it’s a way for Mercedes-Benz engineers to showcase what the brand is capable of.  And at the same time, if you can afford it, you get to enjoy their labor of love, on or off road, in one of the most insane vehicles we’ve ever driven.

Going Topless: Volkswagen Beetle, Mustang GT and Fiat 124 Spider
Text and Photos by Michael Hozjan
With summer having finally arrived a few months late, almost coinciding with leaf peeping season, I got lucky and was treated to three of the coolest convertibles on the market. If you’re looking to get out of the minivan or suv and put fun back into driving, you needn’t look much further, one of these is sure to please your soul.
Tumblr media
Volkswagen Beetle
Several decades ago I was the proud owner of what at the time might have been the oldest convertible Beetle in Quebec, a 1961. The car was a blast to drive and even without any decent heat, I’d often drop the top in the middle of winter and cruise down St. Catherine St. in Montreal.
Those days convertibles reigned supreme, with nearly every model line, from Acadians to Zephyrs, having a convertible version. But ridiculous legislation from the U.S. nearly sent the convertible the way of the dodo. The choice of convertibles has grown in recent years but it’s still relatively slim. The choice of affordable German convertibles is even slimmer. Thank God for the folks at Volkswagen for keeping the drop tops alive throughout the years and model changes from Beetle to Rabbit to Golf and again back to the Beetle. In a sea of jellybean look alike sedans, the Beetle stands supreme in being distinguishable and recognizable.
Tumblr media
Yes you’ll find quicker convertibles such as the Mustang and Fiat, but you’ll be hard pressed to find the Teutonic engineering and ride quality that the Beetle offers elsewhere without emptying your bank account. It’s not just that they’re solid, Volkswagens are well thought out, and one of the best examples is the back up camera mounted underneath the big VW crest. While others, like Mazda and Mercedes, to name a few, have Flavor Flave belt buckle sized crests mounted fore and aft and then expose their cameras to the elements, VW’s is protected from mud, dirt and slush so every time you back up, the camera is clean.
Tumblr media
The VW’s rear view camera is always clean (above)compared to other manufacturers’ cameras (below)
Tumblr media
The Beetle continues with the same charm that it had in the height of its popularity in the sixties. The cutesy we tried too hard “new” Beetle is gone and replaced by dare I say a more masculine rendition? This one works and everyone agrees it looks great, whether they’re talking about the sedan or the convertible.
Except for minor changes to the bumpers, the 2017 Beetle is unchanged from last year’s model. Like throughout the fifties, sixties and seventies, Volkswagen still believes that if it’s not broken why change it. They do however seem to be adding to the trim lines to satisfy every budget, from the base Trendline ($25,390) up the five trim levels topping off with the Dune edition at $32,890. Canada does not get the high horsepower, sporty Beetle R. Bummer!
Tumblr media
Therefore, no matter which model you choose, the engine driving the front wheels is the same, a 1.8L turbocharged unit that doles out 170 hp and 184 lb.ft. of torque. Sadly VW has discontinued their manual tranny and opted to go only with the 6-speed automatic. A smooth shifting and capable tranny but there’s nothing sweeter than going through the gears yourself on a hot summer night on a curvy road.
My driver for the week was the Classic, pegged one level up from the base model and wearing vintage hub caps on steel wheels with chrome rings in lieu of mag wheels. It just adds more charm to the car. For the additional two grand over the base model, the Classic owner gets smartphone integration, 6.3 inch touchscreen, and 8 Fender speakers for the CD player and sat radio in addition to the Trendline’s base equipment such as heated front seats and washer nozzle and electronic stability control.
Tumblr media
My silk blue metallic cabriolet came with a brown top and Sioux brown two-tone cloth and leatherette interior.
Getting away from all the techno and mechanical jargon, if you’ve never driven a Beetle you’re in for a treat. The Beetle is solid, tight and comfortable. The seats are firm yet great for long drives. Controls are easy to reach and manipulate. There’s an air of quality that becomes immediately apparent as soon as you get behind the wheel that few cars in its price range can match. The ride is supple enough to weed out the roughest potholes but firm enough, with undue body roll, to take on spirited driving on the way to the chalet or to your favorite apple picking spot.  Drop the power top and your blood pressure will drop automatically as the Beetle feel good appeal takes charge.
Tumblr media
While there are detractors that say the Beetle is on the noisy side I say bull. I found the Beetle quieter with the top down than some sedans are with the windows open. You can easily carry a conversation at highway speeds. The wind deflector mounted behind the front seats reduces wind buffeting and puts the kibosh on any back seat passengers.
Tumblr media
Oh and don’t think that convertibles are only for summer and are too cold to drive in the winter. Just like my ’61, this Beetle has a thick insulated top the keeps you as cozy in winter as any sedan. It may be the second most recognized car in the world after the Jeep, but it sure doesn’t have the single layer of vinyl roof of the Jeep.
Tumblr media
Throughout the ‘70s the Beetle was an anti-establishment icon. These days it’s as much a fashion statement with just enough retro cues to have baby boomers and millennials appreciate the car.
Price as tested: $27,930
Ford Mustang GT Premium
It happened again. It happens every time I get behind the wheel of a Mustang. I turn into a giddy teenager that just wants to drive and drive and drive and yes smoke the rubber and throw the tail out on occasion.
Tumblr media
The siren that beckoned me to the open road this year was the 5.0L iteration of America’s favorite pony car, the Mustang GT. The last time I was behind the Mustang’s reins, it was powered by a 2.3L EcoBoost four cylinder (the convertible starts at $33,888).  Ya there’s a difference, 435 horses and 400 lb.ft. worth of torque.  And there’s a difference in the sonorous tone of the V-8 as you pull out into traffic, you can’t help but grin.  It’s a melody that transforms you into Frank Bullitt even though the look out the windshield is more reminiscent of a 1971 Mustang than Bullitt’s ’68.
Like the Beetle, the Mustang has the retro flare going on and if memory serves me right is the longest running American built convertible. Which translates to what I said about the Beetle, refinement through the ages.
Those refinements include cowl shake, the Achilles heel of convertibles. Having driven nearly every generation of Mustang throughout the years, this latest edition is easily the stiffest structured Mustang as clearly evidenced with the lack of cowl shake.
Tumblr media
Maybe someone at Ford listened to my constant harping about their pain in the butt infotainement system because this time around everything was childishly simple to use. Or maybe it was just in keeping with the retro motif. In either case, thank you Ford. Matter of fact the whole interior works just fine. Leg, head and shoulder room are plentiful…as long as you’re in the front buckets. Egress and ingress is also excellent, again as long as you’re getting in the front. Despite their initial appearance, the back seats work. This past summer we took my buddy’s girlfriend’s Mustang to the Syracuse Nationals and I’m glad to report the three of us were comfortable throughout the six-hour round trip. So yes it will hold four adults.
Tumblr media
The top has also received more insulation making it quieter, but there’s still ample road noise coming into the cabin. I had to check more than once, when the top was up, if the back windows were down.
Tumblr media
My tester came with the 6-speed automatic with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters and a console-mounted switch for normal, sport, track and snow shift point settings. Thankfully the 6-speed manual remains available.  The 5.0L will get you to the century mark on the speedometer in a hair over 5 seconds, yet the stallion can be calmed to be as smooth as a minivan easing you through bumper to bumper traffic. City driving takes a toll on the ‘Stang’s gas mileage - entering suv territory. Even with a soft throttle foot city driving can bring you in the 14L/100kms area. But cruising down the pike will net a miserly 9L/100kms. My average for the week, despite a healthy dose of spirited throttle action cost me 10.8L/100kms. One sore point that I wish Ford would address is the small gas tank, it roughly holds a paltry 60 litres.
Tumblr media
Just how old are Ford’s designers?
The Mustang is obviously the largest convertible tested here (the pony has grown to a full sized horse, but don’t call it a Clydesdale, it’s nimble and carving out the twisties is a greater joy than ever thanks to the independent rear suspension that replaced the solid rear axle two years ago. The electric steering is precise and the standard 18-inch tires perform admirably. As a matter of fact I hit a piece of rebar poking out of an expansion joint just as I moved into the left lane to pass a crawling ten-wheeler on the 13. I was sure it spelled the end of the wheel and tire, yet to my amazement both held up remarkably well.
Tumblr media
The Premium GT in base form will set you back $49, 948 with another $1500 for the automatic. My tester had the upgrade radio package, adaptive speed control, back up camera, plastic end caps for the roof cavity when open (a $600 option), nav system and a few other treats. Add the dealer prep and transportation charges and the final tab came in at just under sixty grand, not exactly cheap but there’s a lot of fun factor.
Price as tested: $59, 198
Fiat 124 Spider Abarth
I often get asked what’s the best car on the market, and which would I recommend. My response is always the same, Miata. Which is usually followed by, “ No, seriously, what’s the best car” Again my response is. “Miata.”
“But it’s rear wheel drive and so low to the ground, you can’t drive it in winter.”
Sadly I get this mostly from Baby Boomers, which should know better and so I counter with, “Did you forget that before the front wheel drive we both grew up with rear wheel drive cars … and survived. Listen the Miata is a blast to drive, fits like a glove and the engine is bulletproof.”
Tumblr media
Needless to say when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles finally confirmed they were reintroducing the 124 Spider to these shores I was eager to get my hands on it. My buddy, Dino, had one in the seventies and there were many late summer nights spent in it with the top down cruising downtown Montreal or carving up some country road. Often another friend would fit himself sideways into the rear bench seat.
Unlike the other two convertibles here, the 124 bares no retro cues and the only thing it shares with the old Pinifarina designed car is the twin raised hood panels and six-sided grille. In the original you sat mid-ship with the trunk and hood sharing almost equal space. Not so in the new car, and there’s reason for it, it’s based on Mazda’s MX-5 Miata. Yes, the two are built side by side in Japan.
If you thought the Toyota/Subaru partnership with the 86 and BRZ was weird, than this one tops the cake. But you know something, IT WORKS!
Tumblr media
Think about it, you take a world-class chassis structure, like the Miata, mix in Italian suspension, throw in Fiat’s MultiAir 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (remember - Fiat owns Ferrari and the original 124s had twincam engines penned by legendary Ferrari racing engine designer Aurelio Lampredi) and marry it to the Miata’s wonderful, quick throw, 6-speed manual and send the ponies to the rear wheels through a limited slip differential from Fiat’s performance arm, Abarth, well it’s a recipe for success.
Tumblr media
The Abarth version gets 164 horsepower, four more than the standard 124 (thanks to a sport-tuned exhaust), and an impressive 184 lb.ft. of torque with torque peaking at 3,200 rpm. Making it a fun car for the street and good enough to get you to 100 kph in about 6.5 seconds. But the 124 isn’t about 0 to 100 times or quarter mile times, it’s about handling, and that is where the Fiat shines. While I couldn’t get my hands on the latest Miata to do a back-to-back comparison, I’d hazard to say that the Fiat outshines the MX-5.
Power delivery is smooth with just a hint of turbo lag. Brakes are excellent and there’s just enough “give” in the traction control to kick the rear out before it takes over. There’s also sport mode for the suspension.  If the Miata is a fun vehicle to drive the 124 takes it up a notch without sacrificing the ride.
The Miata fits me like a glove, and the Fiat fits like a great pair of Italian loafers. Ingress and egress is easier and there’s just enough added room to keep your from feeling claustrophobic. Except for a few questionable shortfalls the Fiat’s interior is as comfortable as it is attractive.
Tumblr media
Except for the ugly infotainment system screen sticking up like a sore thumb (what ever happened to Italian design?), there’s more of a finished look to the Fiat that the MX-5 misses out on. Heated leather buckets coddle you and offer a generous amount support.
Tumblr media
Ok I’m not nit picking but placing the cup holders behind my elbow doesn’t work in a sports car when I’m shifting. Yes there’s an alternate slot for a cup holder next to the passenger’s knee just waiting for hot coffee to spill. At first glance the Fiat’s trunk is huge compared to the Mazda’s, but upon closer examination you realize that there’s no spare. I’m sorry folks I HATE run flats and any other form of marketing hype including air compressors and canned air, that the automakers are trying to sell us just to avoid throwing in a spare. If you’ve ever had a flat and NOT a slow leak, you’ll know that a compressor will not work, or for that matter if you’ve ever wrecked your rim and blown the air out on our wonderful roads. We need spares not air. The auto club isn’t always there when you need it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh and lastly the Abarth also gets a red faced tachometer. What’s wrong with this picture? Think about it…obviously the guys at Fiat didn’t.
The base 124 will set you back a paltry $32, 890 and the base Abarth starts at $37,995. There are two option packages, the Safety and Comfort Package at $1,300 and the Luxury Collection Package at $5500 that came with my tester. The Luxury Collection includes 9 Bose speakers and subwoofer, GPS, LED lights and upgraded leather seats, sat radio. The hand painted matt black on the hood and trunk lid added another $2,995 to the tag! At over 48 grand, for my money I’ll take the base car thank you and if I want black panels I’ll go with a wrap at a fraction of the price.
Tumblr media
Ok the Fiat has a few minor gripes, but all in all it’s a wonderful ride, one that I’d love to have in my driveway. Will it replace the Miata as my most recommended car? While it’s great to see another fantastic sports car on the market and the two cars despite their similarities are just different enough to matter. The Miata has withstood the test of time, it will be very interesting how the Fiat holds up in reliability.
Price as tested:  $48,385
