Warden at New York Jail Where Financier Epstein Died Is Removed
U.S. Attorney General William Barr ordered the removal of the warden at the federal jail where financier Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in an apparent suicide while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, the Justice Department said on Tuesday, after condemning “serious irregularities” at the facility.
The staff shakeup at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in lower Manhattan announced by the department included temporarily reassigning the warden to another post within the federal Bureau of Prisons, appointing a temporary replacement and placing two corrections officers assigned to Epstein’s unit on administrative leave pending the outcome of investigations.
Epstein was found dead on Saturday morning, having apparently hanged himself in his cell.
The department’s announcement of the staff changes was made hours after President Donald Trump said he wanted a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death.
“Additional actions may be taken as the circumstances warrant,” Kerri Kupec, a Justice Department spokeswoman, said in a statement.
Epstein, who once counted Trump and former President Bill Clinton as friends, was arrested on July 6 and pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking involving dozens of underage girls as young as 14.
Kupec said James Petrucci, the warden at Federal Correctional Institution Otisville in New York, was named as acting MCC warden. The previous warden was reassigned to the bureau’s Northeast Regional Office, Kupec added. The corrections officers were not identified.
The department did not name the warden who was reassigned, but sources familiar with the matter identified him as Lamine N’Diaye, who formerly was in charge of the Bureau of Prisons office of internal affairs.
Barr, the top U.S. law enforcement official, on Monday vowed to carry on the Epstein investigation following the death of the wealthy and well-connected money manager. Barr said he was “appalled” at the jail’s “failure to adequately secure this prisoner.” Barr cited “serious irregularities at this facility,” but did not offer specifics.
The 66-year-old financier had been on suicide watch, but a source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity said he was not on watch at the time of his death.
At the MCC, two jail guards are required to make separate checks on all prisoners every 30 minutes, but that procedure was not followed overnight, according to the source.
Trump earlier on Tuesday praised Barr’s handling of the matter, adding, “I want a full investigation, and that’s what I absolutely am demanding. That’s what our attorney general, our great attorney general is doing.”
Speaking to reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, Trump also defended his decision on Saturday to retweet an unfounded conspiracy theory from a conservative comedian named Terrence K. Williams that Clinton was involved in Epstein’s death.
“He’s a very highly respected conservative pundit,” said of Williams. “He’s a big Trump fan. And that was a retweet. That wasn’t from me. … So I think I was fine.”
New York City’s medical examiner has said an autopsy on Epstein was completed on Sunday, but the cause of death remained pending.
U.S. lawmakers have demanded that the government hold responsible people who allegedly helped Epstein engage in sex trafficking. Senator Ben Sasse, the Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Oversight Subcommittee, urged Barr to void a 2008 agreement that Epstein entered into with federal prosecutors in Florida that has been widely criticized as too lenient.
Under that deal, Epstein pleaded guilty to state prostitution charges and served 13 months in jail, but was allowed to leave the detention facility regularly for his office.
‘CROOKED DEAL’
Some of Epstein’s accusers have called on the federal judge overseeing that case to scrap portions of the agreement, which provided immunity to Epstein’s alleged co-conspirators. In a letter to Barr, Sasse said the agreement should be thrown out altogether.
“This crooked deal cannot stand,” and should be voided to “ensure that some measure of justice is finally delivered to Epstein’s victims who have been let down time and time again by their government,” Sasse said.
One of the prosecutors involved in the 2008 agreement, Alexander Acosta, resigned as Trump’s labor secretary in July as the Epstein deal came under fresh scrutiny after the financier’s arrest in New York.
The Epstein scandal has also enmeshed Leslie Wexner, the billionaire chairman and chief executive behind Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works parent L Brands Inc, who had previously entrusted Epstein to manage his personal finances and serve as trustee of his charitable foundation.
Wexner recently hired white-collar defense lawyer Mary Jo White, a partner at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP and former U.S. attorney in Manhattan, according to a person familiar with the matter, as scrutiny of Epstein’s finances intensifies.
Wexner has not been accused of criminal wrongdoing.
CNN earlier reported Wexner’s hiring of White.
Neither White nor a representative for Wexner immediately responded to requests for comment. A spokesman for U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman in Manhattan declined to comment.

BY JACK WILKINSON Football journalist – @jacktwilkinson Highlights and report as first-half Lukaku double sees off Burnley despite Marcus Rashford’s red cardLast Updated: 02/09/18 8:11pm 2:58 Highlights: Burnley 0-2 Man Utd Highlights: Burnley 0-2 Man Utd Romelu Lukaku scored twice as 10-man Manchester United returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor. United looked on course for a routine victory when Lukaku headed them ahead on 27 minutes and doubled their tally with a close-range second a minute before half-time. But after Paul Pogba had a second-half penalty saved by Joe Hart, United had to play the final 19 minutes a man down when Marcus Rashford was shown a straight red card for head-butting Phil Bardsley. However, three days on from their agonising Europa League exit against Olympiakos, Burnley showed little sign of mounting a late comeback, Sam Vokes’ header stoppage-time header all the Clarets could muster by way of a response. UNITED FANS FLY ANTI-WOODWARD BANNER Manchester United fans fly anti-Ed Woodward banner over Turf Moor Instead, United ground out the win – which lifts them to 10th in the table – to ease the pressure on beleaguered manager Jose Mourinho. Burnley remain second from bottom after their third successive defeat. Burnley: Hart (7), Taylor (5), Tarkowski (5), Mee (5), Bardsley (5), Lennon (5), Cork (5), McNeil (6), Westwood (5), Wood (6), Hendrick (5). Subs: Vokes (6), Barnes (5), Vydra (5). Man Utd: De Gea (7), Valencia (7), Lindelof (7), Smalling (7), Shaw (7), Matic (7), Fellaini (7), Sanchez (7), Pogba (7), Lingard (8), Lukaku (8). Subs: Bailly (n/a), Herrera (6), Rashford (3). Man of the Match: Romelu Lukaku. United’s fluid front three of Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard tormented Burnley in the opening exchanges, with the fleet-footed England international creating two clear opening inside 10 minutes. With barely two minutes on the clock, Lingard wriggled clear of the Clarets centre-backs but flashed a shot wide of the post – eight minutes later he curled an effort from the edge of the box over. Romelu Lukaku celebrates scoring against Burnley Lingard remained a threat but it was his strike partners that combined for United’s opener as Sanchez was allowed to pick out Lukaku with a cross from the left, and the Belgium international headed his second goal of the season beyond Hart from six yards. It was no more than United deserved and they could have had a second had it not been for Hart, who raced off his line to smother Lukaku on 36 minutes – but it was not long until the Burnley goalkeeper’s defences were breached again. Both managers made three changes on the back of Premier League defeats against Fulham and Tottenham respectively. Charlie Taylor, Dwight McNeil and Phil Bardsley came in for Burnley while Victor Lindelof, Alexis Sanchez and Marouane Fellaini – making his 250th Premier League appearance – were recalled into the United line-up. Lingard was involved again as his shot ricocheted around the Burnley area, striking Ben Mee and the head of Ashley Westwood before falling perfectly for the lurking Lukaku, who slotted home to double United’s lead on 44 minutes. With United meandering to victory, the game burst into life on 68 minutes as substitute Rashford drew a foul from Aaron Lennon in the area, but Pogba’s penalty after his now-trademark run-up was parried away by Hart. Things took a turn for the worse for United three minutes later when Rashford was given his marching orders by referee Jon Moss for reacting angrily to a Bardsley tackle and throwing his head into the face of the Burnley defender. Marcus Rashford saw red for head-butting Phil Bardsley But despite Burnley’s best effort, United had a measure of control despite falling down to 10 men and saw out the victory with relative ease, Vokes’ glancing header the closest the Clarets came to reducing the arrears. OPTA STATS * Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has won each of his four Premier League away games at Turf Moor (P4 W4), including all three in charge of the Red Devils. * Burnley have won just one of their last 18 top-flight meetings with Manchester United (D8 L9), with that victory coming in their first ever Premier League meeting back in August 2009 (1-0). * Among each of the current Premier League teams, Burnley are on the longest winless run of any side in the competition (nine games – D3 L6). * Manchester United have won each of their last 24 Premier League matches in which they’ve scored the opening goal. * Marcus Rashford was shown his first red card for Manchester United, while also being the first substitute to be sent off for the Red Devils in the Premier League since Marouane Fellaini against Hull City in May 2015. THE MANAGERS 1:46 Dyche credits United’s performance Dyche credits United’s performance Sean Dyche: “Well, I think we’re finding our feet a bit. They’ve had a lot of challenges these players. Its game 10 for us of a squad of roughly 17 at any given time. We were down to 16 on Thursday and that’s a lot of football for anyone in this early part of the season. It’s still physically a task. This two-week period now gives us a chance to rest and work, but certainly refresh ourselves for the challenge which is the Premier League.” 3:39 Mourinho: We should score 6, 7 or 8! Mourinho: We should score 6, 7 or 8! Jose Mourinho: “The three points were an important thing, the quality of the performance and happiness of the team is an Old Trafford response – the way Old Trafford reacted to the boys in the Spurs defeat was important. Today the fans were fantastic from the first minute, but Old Trafford is a moment to remember.” MAN OF THE MATCH – ROMELU LUKAKU Mourinho has really been up against after United’s worst start to a Premier League season since 1992. But just when his manager needed it most, Lukaku rekindled his touch in front of goal. The Belgian’s first league brace since his United debut in the competition back in August 2017 put the visitors in control, and gave Mourinho something to cheer about after a fortnight of angst at Old Trafford. WHAT’S NEXT? WOLVES VS BURNLEY September 16, 2018, 12:30pm Live on Both sides resume their Premier League campaign after the international break. “Taggy Thingy” (Off-Putting Name, but Whatever)
i’m tagging @f--o--r--e--v--e--r , @winterfallcat and @giulswrites to partake in this and to pass it on. part 2 is coming right up.
1.     What is your favorite word, and what is your least favorite word?
it’s create. And as for my least favorite word, it’s material. Like, when a band says they’re working on new material. I’d prefer if they just said ‘new music’. The word ‘material’ just kind of throws me off.
2.     Team Cap or Team Iron? (This is the make or break. You’re being tested. I’m joking,)
Oh man, even when the film had just come out, I couldn’t make my mind. I just can’t choose. But now, I can confidently say that I’m on Team Spidey. He was crushing it during that whole fight at the airport.
3.     Do you consider someone as a hero to you? Why?
My hero is Japanese author Masashi Kishimoto. He created one of my all time favourite manga Naruto. He’s my hero because just like me, he was a budding artist who didn’t do so well in school, in fact, he practically flunked high school but that never stopped him from trying. And he eventually went on to creating one of the most popular manga series with a 15-year run. This would always make me feel better about my lesser drawing skills and the fact that I sucked at school. And it taught me that in the face of adversity, to never give up on yourself and there are no shortcuts to success. You have to be willing to put in the hard work if you want to make it.
4.     Which character mostly represents you? (Can be from anything. What you believe in, to the thing you generally do, etc.,)
The 3 Eds from Ed, Edd n, Eddy. I know it’s not one character, but I can actually relate with all three of them rather just one. For starters, Ed. He’s fun, wild, and kind at heart. He can be a little dumb sometimes but always means well in everything he does. He’s also very impulsive and acts out a lot whether he’s sad or angry. And he has a wild imagination, and he follows it wherever it leads him. And he watches a lot of movies and reads comics, from which he was able to craft his own narratives so he’s also very creative. Double D, he’s smart, nerdy and a little goofy. And he always likes to keep organized. But he’s also very kind and helpful, and prefers to stay out of trouble and is very cautious. And last but not least, Eddy. He’s selfish, over-confident and something of a visionary. He’s always thinking of the next big thing to get him and the Eds ahead in life. He’s also really stubborn, and can never own up to his mistakes and can never admit when he’s wrong. But deep down, he truly does care for the Eds and the other kids of the cul-de-sac, even though he always buds heads with them. He just wants to be accepted by them. He and the Eds are addicted to jawbreakers, just like I am to McDonald’s and pizza. So yeah, the 3 Eds represent me perfectly, it’s a little bit of each of them ingrained in me.
5.     Favorite Historical figure?
My favorite historical figure is Martin Luther King, Jr. he fought for black people to have the same equal rights as everyone else in America, at a time when racial segregation was at an all time high. I feel like he was a true and noble activist in the Civil Rights Movement, a radiant symbol of hope and optimism in a world divided, with a dream of a world united. A world where one is judged by the content of his character and how hard they work instead of the colour of their skin.
6.     Favorite colours? Or favorite palette?
Black, green, red and blue. Haven’t been that into colours lately, but I’m getting back into it. my favorite palette is green. I watched a lot of Ben 10 and Incredible Hulk growing up, so my favorite colour has been green ever since.
7.     Have you got a favourite food?
I love pizza (pepperoni is life!), cheeseburgers (double cheese, double bacon), spaghetti bolognese (just the way my mum makes it), fried chicken and macaroni and cheese!
8.     Have you got a favourite genre in music?
My all time favourite music genre is POP PUNK! I also like listening to punk, rock, alternative and the occasional pop song, though I’m not a big fan of pop music as I was when I was younger. I basically like anything catchy, heavy, beautiful and melodic. Anything that catches me by surprise and is like heaven to my ears.
9.     Top favourite three books?
Haven’t read anything in a while, though:
Dairy of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. Those books were always fun to read. I miss ‘em.
Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto. Still one of my all time favourite manga to go back to.
Bleach by Tite Kubo. Another one of my favourites (which reminds me, I have some catching up to do).
10.  Is there a skill or something new that you would be interested in learning?
I would very much like to learn the guitar and the piano. I’ve been playing the guitar on and off for a couple of years. I just need to commit and practise more. It would be super awesome to be able to play guitar and piano cause I like music and for future projects I want to work on, I want to play some stuff.
11.  On rainy days - what do you enjoy doing?
I like to watch movies, listen to music and draw.
