My first fiction cover! For Jennifer Brozek's THE KILIMANJARO RUN, a Shadowrun novella. Challenging piece to paint! I still feel like my comfort zone is a single figure on a simple background, and there's a lot going on here. Vehicles, landscape, transparent spirit animals, etc.

It's always surprising to me that Never Let Me Sleep(and it's sequels) isn't far more popular on Tumblr. This is a book about a schizophrenic and otherwise non-neurotypical teen girl who wakes up, discovers monsters have taken over her town, realizes she's living through a horror movie, and grabs a baseball bat. It's apocalyptic YA action and that really feels like something we'd all be down for.
Anyway, the omnibus of the trilogy is on-sale now and cheap. Just FYI.

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Multiverse of Mystery – Holmes & Watson in every universe, every incarnation, all at once!

I got a short story collection called "the reinvented heart" edited by cat rambo and jennifer brozek. the idea behind it was that scifi is too much about tech and not about people so they looked for female and nonbinary authors to write about feelings. I was a little concerned by the "women and nonbinaries vs men" premise since I feel like sometimes when people say stuff like that the best you can say about them is they're a little annoying. but whether or not you think "non-men" is a useful category I did like the stories
one of them made me cry in public bc it was about a woman who gets to talk to her cat using alien technology and the cat loved her so much :< this is also the same short story collection with the one about the person whose girlfriend was a plant and med students were always trying to take a peek inside her plant body. I love scifi but I love relationships between characters most of all so an anthology where that's the theme was perfect for me

“Unsavory” by Jennifer Brozek is a fairly short and simple tale of the baker Tressa, who has now been in the palace kitchens for 3 months. She ends up stumbling onto and stopping an attempted poisoning scheme, though they’re not actually sure who the target was. She also managed to save her crush’s dog in the process too, which will probably be more personal brownie points for her once the various rounds of questioning are over.
That does bring up a few questions though. How common are pets for Heralds? I mean, I speculated on if it was possible for a Companion to have a pet, but that was silly speculation for the sake of itself. Now the subject has actually come up. Would a Herald’s pupper go on circuit with them? The story mentioned Tressa’s turn to babysit it, so apparently not? Unless that’s just taking care of it while he’s working the Haven Courtrooms or something. I guess it would be a lot easier for those on permanent assignment someplace, like the Monarch’s Own. But on the whole it might be easier to have a few Circle pets. A few kitties and dogs that aren’t owned by any one Herald in particular, but kept around the palace or Collegium for when somebody is back for a bit and would like having something fluffy to pet. Companions, for all their virtues and their coats, aren’t particularly fluffy. (Though they still enjoy brushy.)

While we don't know where crime, its prevention, or its investigation will go in the future, it's fun to imagine. And even more fun to read short stories by those who are really good at imagining. Here's the link to my interview with Jennifer Brozek and Cat Rambo, editors of the criminally-minded sci-fi short story anthology, “The Reinvented Detective.” https://paulsemel.com/exclusive-interview-the-reinvented-detective-editors-jennifer-brozek-cat-rambo/ 📖🚀👮🪐🕵️

Description What will it mean to be human in the future? How will we evolve in order to reach the stars?
Fifteen short stories collected in this book examine how interstellar flight might change humanity itself. Will we choose to upload our minds into a singularity? Enhance ourselves with alien DNA? Will our bodies remain the same, but our culture and societal norms adapt to accommodate for effects of time dilation, or become subsumed by advanced alien cultures?
Hugo and Nebula award winning authors, bestsellers, and some of the hottest new writers in the field of hard science fiction imagine an array of possible futures—from bright to dystopian—and different permutations of what's in store for us as a species.
Includes stories by Robert J. Sawyer, John Varley, Robert Silverberg, Brenda Cooper, Ken Liu, Mike Resnick, Jody Lynn Nye and many more.

The Scene

Worldbuilding
Got your bag? Got your sketchbook? Got your water bottle? Okay, great! Time to enter this impressive gallery of an anthology.
Many types are art are explored in these works: the art of tattoo, sketch work, and stage. The art of song, and the art of paint. Even the art of gallery curation. Some tales between these pages will enchant you. Some will make you shiver and move on quickly. Some will comfort disturbed souls…and some will disturb comfortable egos. What I can promise you is that each story hung in this gallery has the power to move you.
The Crowd
Tumblr media
Characterization
In this work, you’ll meet so many characters worth remembering. Sami, who mourns a planet and heals by painting. Mischievous Art playing tricks with a pencil and Mona who brings magic out of the grayness of loss. An incredible acting troupe who act as one and create in the face of repression. Sweet Olena and sorrowing Amina. So many characters with so many different lives, and all of them united by the power of art. As usual, I won’t dive deep into any single piece of an anthology, but the careful curation of these works walks us through a fascinating gallery of the human heart and soul.
Writing Style
Tumblr media
My particular favorite in this collection was Art In, a fun Oceans-11 style heist tale with a magic twist. Another absolute treasure is Seven Stones To Throw, which finishes the collection with a gentle paintbrush and a smile. But every one of these stories has something great to offer. The only stories I had any issue at all with were The New Pointillist Manifesto and A Matter Of Value, which both struck me as that guy at the gala opening who insists on rambling away at you while drinking too much of the wine on offer. But hey, that’s expected when you go to the gallery. The careful curation of this collection starts the series with catharsis and new beginnings, leads us deep into humankind’s desires and the parts of ourselves we don’t always want to look in the eye, and gently leads us back up into the light refreshed from our journey.
The Moves
Tumblr media
Plot
Some stories move at a fast clip and some are as leisurely as a day spent painting in the garden. All are nicely timed. Again, good curation has created a careful beginning, a fast-paced early series, a deep and occasionally dark middle, and a final story as sweet and quiet as a Sunday afternoon.
Overall Rating
Tumblr media
A gallery of metaphor and narrative well worth exploring. Enjoy.

Grants Pass edited by Jennifer Brozek and Amanda Pillar
Published: August 21st 2009
I had to hunt this book down on thrift sites because I couldn't find it at any bookstore. My boyfriend's family is from Grants Pass, and I've been there just once to meet them, but a story from Seanan McGuire really solidified my interest in this book!

After that is “Needs Must When Evil Bides” by Jennifer Brozek. This one has an old woman who used to be someone in a definitely not obvious dangerous profession being asked to rescue a noble family being held captive in their manor by a few bandits. For the most part it’s fairly good. Except for the predictable twist at the end that once again goes into a trope in these things I have stated several times I hate. So instead I am going to choose to misinterpret things and say that the old bridle was showing us that our heroine used to have a very kinky sex life.

Horror Addicts loves Tales of Nightmares
Horror Addicts gave Tales of Nightmares, which I edited for the Wily Writers collective, a great review, singling out stories by Angel Leigh McCoy, Jennifer Brozek, and Bill Bodden. My favorite part: “Tales of Nightmares consists of a handful of horror tales, each wildly different from the other. Some modern, some period, they’ve got yokai, killers, werewolves, monsters, and haunted houses in…
