back to btvs blogging to fix my brain a little i wanna talk about why jenny/ethan would function like calendiles except more insane and probably worse.

first off -- @ethanrayne was the one who fully converted me to how excellent the notion of bisexual ethan is, simply because ethan sharing the same desires and inclinations as giles and pivoting to the exact opposite end of the spectrum creates this excellently absurd warped mirror where they're both somehow overcompensating. trying to distance themselves from something and furious at this person who is able to inhabit this aspect of themselves that they themselves find abhorrent. giles could date men but he doesn't and won't because it's wrong so OBVIOUSLY he is going to live in a constant state of rigorous self-flagellation and boxed-in misery. ethan could date women but he doesn't and won't because then he's living within the confines of the system so CLEARLY the only path forward is to embrace selfish reckless hedonism. see what i'm saying here???

moving towards jenny/ethan with that in mind: i think ethan overlaps in key ways with both jenny and giles enough that he and jenny would get along OUTRAGEOUSLY well under particularly specific sets of circumstances. jenny and ethan both have a thirst for adventure (it's why giles likes them!) which means that they would both very likely have a hell of a lot of fun doing all the crazy party things that giles inevitably draws the line at. (the man does have limits.) they're both playful, flirtatious, sarcastic, and absolute unmitigated disasters who think they're cooler and more capable than they actually are. on that level alone they would get along really well.

BUT ALSO: ethan and giles are super similar in that they are so so mired in a decision they made in their early twenties and so resistant to change! despite ethan talking all the big talk about being freer than giles and more honest than giles, he is playing a very specific role just the same as giles is. he refuses to ever be there or be real. he would, i think, so easily see jenny as ripper's tiresome attempt at heterosexuality, as that's what fits most easily into his extremely limited concept of who giles is, and then actually meeting her and seeing her with giles and realizing that this is someone gorgeous, smart, funny, & completely in the loop re: giles's sordid history -- choosing to be with him not Because Of ripper or In Spite Of ripper but because she loves the whole complete man -- ethan would try and play mind games with jenny and she'd decimate him with her pinky finger and he would have that same moment as giles where it's like. i underestimated you SO thoroughly. i am at your mercy.

& ethan and giles are ALSO super similar in that we see them both in a romantic connection (giles with jenny, ethan with giles) where they are basically begging to be kicked around. jenny likes kicking people around. there is a very clear thing that could happen here.

for the two people who understand my vision, this, to me, would be jennyethan

so in lieu of my recent discussion with @ethanrayne i need to share with everyone my vision for a jenny/ethan fic that i would want to write but am still turning over in my head. essentially what happens is that giles dies horribly instead of jenny, subsequently sparking jenny and ethan's quest to resurrect him by any means necessary. about partway through the quest, when they try to call upon giles's spirit, they discover through a third-party expert that he actually hasn't passed on all the way, making it significantly less difficult to reach him if they need to.

now, why hasn't giles passed on all the way??? because giles is vaguely aware of what's happening, and has realized a good six months before either jenny or ethan will ever even figure it out that jenny and ethan are actually kinda vibing Really Well on this road trip, that this is going to lead to some sort of extremely poorly defined sexual encounter, and that the subsequent mutual emotional disaster that the lack of communication will create runs the risk of leaving multiple craters in the face of the earth. For The Sake Of The World this ghost is going to have to cock-block both of his exes So Hard. unfinished business? more like business that cannot ever be finished. (jenny and ethan know about none of this.)

Jenny had ended up between the two of them, and, because she refused to be anything like the demure young lady he’d imagined Ripper taking up with, she had decided to spread across nearly all of the bed, forcing Ripper and Ethan to the very edges.

looks like this is a series now :) i shall add to it when i feel like it! not as much of a narrative direction here as there is in, say, the very complicated giles/jenny/ethan fic that i will write at some point. swear to god. but this is a very nice fun thing for me to write after work, sooooo…..

the thing that really gets me personally about ethan and jenny is that BECAUSE giles has A Type, so many of their interests actually do overlap!!! they both love partying hard and living in the moment and they’re both very sensual people who enjoy Feeling Things Deeply. they are both unapologetic adventurers with deep passion for what they do and a wicked sense of humor that is a little too mean sometimes. they could probably make each other just a little bit worse but right now they wanna go clubbing

most unhinged aspect of the ethan/jenny polycule facet?

for the first few months of getting to know her, ethan thinks he’s smarter than jenny, and jenny immediately recognizes that and starts to deliberately exploit it to fuck him over. she’s not insulted for a single second; she is instead DELIGHTED by the opportunity. getting upset is not half as fun to her as using his perception of her as Giles’s Silly Little Too-Young Girlfriend to make him repeatedly fall flat on his face. it takes him multiple months to figure out what she’s doing and when it finally clicks for him he’s like Oh Jesus Christ and starts being extra mean to her to overcompensate for how much he wants her to like him. jenny responds with sickening saccharine sweetness and breaks him in a new way. giles is watching this whole thing happen like it’s a nature documentary

i personally just think it would be SO fucking funny to have jenny have to go through the process of falling in love with a second person SPECIFICALLY after she so clearly decided giles was it for her. and also that that person is ethan. like giles is the literal only person jenny allows herself to be emotionally vulnerable and open with and now she is considering letting ETHAN into her heart????? ETHAN RAYNE???? ethan rayne of the homicidal halloween costumes????

Momentarily distracted by the notion of Jenny being in love with him, Ethan forced himself to focus on the matter at hand. “I treat Jenny as is reasonable to treat my partner’s partner,” he said stubbornly. “…All right,” said Ripper.
