The holidays had already been hard enough without his mom. 

Facing the prospect of birthdays and the solstice without Harrow too had run through Callum’s mind that first miserable morning at the Moon Nexus, the grief rampant and wild until he sat down to wait for Ezran to wake at dawn. 

But facing winter without Harrow or Rayla is unbearable. 

Callum can barely drag himself out of bed, turning his face away from his pillow as a quiet knock comes at his door, and then his brother enters without a response.

Ezran sits on the side of his bed as they share a glance, Ez’s eyes similarly teary. Then he lies down next to him, the way they used to when they were little and too excited to sleep for the start of eight candle days proceeding the Solstice, small trinkets and good food awaiting them every night.

Callum takes the tiny hand Ezran offers him, grasping it snugly. He’s not alone in his grief or worry and it’s good to be reminded of that sometimes, Ezran’s brow looking almost a little bare without his crown. It makes him look even younger than he already does.

“We can have breakfast brought up here,” Ezran offers softly, his own voice small. “If you want.”

Callum exhales, snow falling outside the window. He can feel the changes in the wind now, a reminder that as much as he’s lost, he’s gained too. Memories and magic if nothing else as sweet as permanence. 

He squeezes his brother’s hand and clears his throat. “Yeah,” Callum says, suddenly grateful beyond words. Springtime will be easier. “That sounds good.”

Do you have any Modern AUs that you could share with us?

TDP corner has quite a few pretty well known Modern AU fics (Zoommates, Homeward Bound, some others I'm sure I'm forgetting and @jelzorz's dabbled in a few, probably most notably "raising chickens" and "a snowfall kind of love"). One of my all time favourites is this long, sweet, friendship with dashes of romance centric oneshot. General Modern AUs tag here that will probably have the bulk of what you're looking for fic/fanart wise <3

For myself, I'm mostly incapable writing anything other than Rayllum first meetings only when it comes to Modern AUs / I prefer to stick as close to canon's world as possible generally speaking, but some exceptions:

the most wonderful time of the year: Ezran drags Callum to a "Meet Santa" event. Rayla works as a holiday helper. Christmas fluff ensues. 2.8k and super old (like dec 2019 old) but still very cute

luck: Callum and Rayla meet at a DnD club. 3k, Loosely inspired by the Zoom Into Xadia dnd skit the cast did back in 2020

Honestly the only modern AU headcanons I hold strongly to is like

Callum and Ezran are from a mixed race, interfaith family. Harrow is Christian so they do celebrate Christmas, but culturally participate and consider themselves to be Jewish far more. Callum (+ Amaya and Sarai) are Korean and Ezran is half Black, half Korean

Ezran would be an animal rights protection lawyer

If Rayla plays an instrument, she plays the drums (listen, the sticks just work well with her dual blades)

Soren's favourite movie is "Bend It Like Beckham"

I think I have just one modern AU planned for the future which is Great Responsibility, featuring Ezran being bitten by a radioactive spider, Callum as his protective only mildly freaking out big brother, and Rayla as the boxer who actually teaches Ezran how to fight (and gets drawn into their shenanigans as a result) but that's more Ezran (+ broyals) centric than anything else

Happy Pesach! More tdp jewish headcanons!

Okay this one’s gonna be short cuz it’s just passover headcanons

Since the king and queen are jewish, the rest of the kingdom is too

Before passover, everyone gathers in the center of the kingdom with their bread, pastries etc. and they have a huge fire to burn them all

It was a tradition started by one of the previous kings, and even though it’s of religious importance it also became a celebration

Jewish people in other kingdoms (if their rulers aren’t jewish) come to Katolis for the burning of leavened bread

The king and queen always hold a seder and invite rulers from other kingdoms to it, and of course welcome guests in the kingdom that had nowhere to go, per passover custom

Though when Harrow first took over as king, their first seder was just for his family. If people needed a place for seder they had a room set up for them

Ezran’s favorite part is the four questions. Before he was able to do them, Callum had the honor, but once Ezran was old enough, he would practice it days in advance with his mom

The haggadahs have the kingdom’s symbol on it

So do the kippahs

And the pillows they recline on

(basically everything the royal family owns and needs for pesach is embroided with the symbol of the towers)

Even though Sarai and Harrow could have wine with the seder, they both like sparkling grape juice more

Plus it discourages the boys from wanting to underage drink

(Amaya still slips them a little bit of Manischewitz anyway cuz she’s a cool jewish aunt)

One time Ezran set out the cup for Elijah, but when no one was looking Bait drank it

(Ezran thought it meant Elijah had visited, completely ignoring Bait’s purple-stained tongue)

Whenever Harrow breaks the matzoh, he’s somehow able to get it perfectly even

The afikomen hunt goes around the entire castle, and Callum and Ezran always work together to find it because they’re those kinds of brothers

Occasionally Ezran will take a sip at parts where they just lift up their glasses. Callum eventually learned to remind him just before they lifted them, “this one isn’t for drinking, Ez.”

Callum loves gefilte fish. Sarai thinks it’s all right. Harrow only eats it to set an example, he thinks it tastes gross. Ezran refuses to eat it

Ezran, becoming king: Aw man does that mean I have to eat the gefilte fish at Passover?

Sarai and Harrow used to gt into competitions to see who could eat the most spoonfuls of maror

Sarai may have a sweet tooth but she also has a bitterness tolerance if you catch my drift

Sarai is the one who suggested they put the orange on the seder plate, because her family started doing it when Amaya came out to them

Since they can’t have “”“jelly tarts”“” during pesach, Ezran’s favorite snack to steal are macaroons. Specifically the chocolate ones

tdp jewish royal family hcs part 2!

I already made a post about it but Ezran and Callum have bags of stones for when they visit their mom since she passed

Amaya is the cool lesbian aunt who would always do things like get the kids crazy gifts for Chanukah and sneak them a little Manischewitz at Passover

Ezran went through a phase where he would only eat sandwiches that were made with challah bread (i do not blame him, that stuff is the bomb)

Harrow will literally say “Oy vey” from the smallest inconvenience to bigger ones

Harrow: *stubs his toe* Oy vey

Also Harrow: *elves break into his castle to attempt to kill him* Oy vey

In the royal gardens there’s an etrog tree for Tu’bshvat that Ezran takes care of

It flourishes really well he’s so proud of it

At one point on their quest to return the egg to the Dragon King they run out of food and Rayla jokes “We could always eat Bait,” and Callum’s first defense is “No we can’t, he’s not kosher!”

They have the best Torah-related banter to pass the time on their journey too

Ezran: How long have we been walking to deliver this egg? Callum: I’d say 40 days and 40 nights

Ezran: So I’m Moses, and that makes you Aaron? Callum: In what world am I Aaron? Ezran: You’re the older one Callum: Yeah but- Ezran: Rayla can be Miriam Rayla, a goy: What are you two saying?

Speaking of goyim Viren is one and that’s final

Sarai: Shabbat Shalom, Viren! Viren: Doesn’t Shalom mean “Hello?” What’s “Shabbat Hello” haha Sarai: Viren you ignorant slut

He’s the embodiment of the “challa is traditionally served on passover” image

Viren: So, Your Majesty, did you enjoy Yom Kippur? Harrow: Viren the main subject for Yom Kippur is that we can’t eat. Not really that enjoyable Viren: Really? I thought it was like Easter

Viren: I ordered breakfast for Your Majesties today. Eggs, toast, sausage and bacon Sarai: *to Harrow* I wanna fire him

a collection of tdp jewish royal family headcanons cuz i’m jewish and it’s what i deserve

Callum’s bar mitzvah ceremony was one of the biggest and most important ceremonies in the kingdom

He was sooo nervous that he’d mess up but he did fine and Ezran was super proud of him

“I hope that when I become a bar mitzvah I’m as good as you were!”

And of course when it comes time Callum is going to help him learn the blessings and stuff, even if it gives him war flashbacks to when he learned it himself the first time

Ezran would tease his brother on Yom Kippur by eating hamantaschens or really just any other food around him (in a silly “ha ha you can’t have it” teasing brother way. of course he wasn’t actually being mean, especially since it was literally the day of repentance)

The covering for the torah that they have in the castle has the symbol of the crown on it (those two tower things. y’all know what i mean)

The day the elf army decides to attack is on Shabbat since that’s when the kingdom would be most vulnerable

Hamantaschens becoming so popular around the kingdom was literally Ezran’s fault

Ezran: “Hamantaschens are so good I want them all the time why do we only eat them at Passover?”

Harrow: Because it’s a significant food for the Jewish holiday of Purim and we should respect-

Sarai: Harrow just let the kid eat the damn hamantaschens whenever he wants

Speaking of Sarai she was the cantor for a synagogue in the kingdom before becoming queen and even after then continued to be cantor because she loved singing and being a part of that synagogue so much

One of Callum’s favorite possessions is his tallit he received when he became a bar mitzvah because his mom made it for him

Their mother’s death was the only time the two have said the mourner’s kaddish in true mourning and they hoped it’d be the last time they would for a long time

I know I ended on a sad note there but I promise there’ll be more fun jewish hc’s to come!
