Asia Pacific 90 years ago today: Northeast Flag Replacement (29 Dec 1928) https://buff.ly/2ETkwiF Japanese attempts to halt the Nationalist advance in China were thwarted when the warlord Yan Xishan unexpectedly seized Beijing on behalf of Chiang Kaishek’s Nationalist government. The other warlords soon followed suit in recognizing the Nationalist regime in Nanjing, culminating in December with the Fengtian clique raising the Nationalist flag in the cities of the northeast. December 12, 1936, “The Xi'An Incident”

On December 12, 1936, the “Generalissimo” Chiang Kai-shek, commander of the Kuomintang forces, was arrested and held hostage by the personal guard of Marshal Zhang Xueliang, warlord of Manchuria and commander in chief of the Northeast Army.

This incident is considered a turning point in modern Chinese history, it led to the signing of a truce between the forces of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China, until then engaged in a harsh civil war, and to the realization of a United Front to repel the Japanese invasion.

Zhang Xueliang led his troops in Manchuria until 1931, when the Japanese extended their influence throughout the area, forcing him to retreat. Back at the command of his army, he was sent by Chiang Kai-Shek to suppress the Red Army of the Communist Party of China. Chiang believed that only after having reunified China, through the eradication of the communist forces, the Kuomintang could have launched a decisive counter-attack against Japan.

Confused by Chiang Kai-Shek's tactics, Zhang Xueliang decided to secretly enter in contact with the “rebels” of the Red Army, which in the meantime had settled in Shaanxi, and sign a temporary truce.

While traveling to Xi'An to monitor the anti-communist campaign, Chiang Kai-Shek was arrested along with his entourage from the personal guard of Zhang Xueliang. Thanks to this kidnapping, the highest authorities of the Kuomintang were forced to sit at the negotiating table along with a delegation of the Communist Party of China. On December 24, 1936, the two sides reached an agreement to establish a United Front, and Chiang was released the next day.

Ultimately, the experience of the United Front came to favor the Communist Party of China, which could count on a period of respite from the civil war and on the support of the Soviet Union. Zhang Xueliang, who died in 2001, spent most of the rest of his life in prison and he never publicly revealed anything about the incident.

Il 12 Dicembre 1936 il “Generalissimo” Chiang Kai-Shek, leader del Guomindang, fu arrestato e tenuto in ostaggio dalla guardia personale del maresciallo Zhang Xueliang, signore della guerra della Manciuria e comandante in capo dell'Armata del nordest.

Questo incidente, considerato un punto di svolta nella storia moderna cinese, portò alla sottoscrizione di una tregua tra le forze del Guomindang e quelle del Partito comunista cinese, fino a quel momento impegnate in un'aspra guerra civile, i quali formarono un fronte unito per respingere l'avanzata dei giapponesi.

Zhang Xueliang guidò le sue truppe in Manciuria fino al 1931, quando i giapponesi estesero la loro influenza in tutta l'area costringendolo a ritirarsi. Tornato al comando del suo esercito, Zhang fu inviato da Chiang Kai-Shek a sopprimere l'Armata Rossa del Partito comunista cinese. Egli credeva che solo dopo aver riunificato la Cina, eradicando le forze comuniste, il Guomindang avrebbe potuto sferrare un contrattacco decisivo contro il Giappone.

Non convinto delle scelte strategiche di Chiang, Zhang Xueliang decise di entrare segretamente in contatto con i “ribelli” dell'Armata Rossa, che nel frattempo si erano stabiliti nello Shaanxi, e siglare una tregua temporanea.

Recatosi in viaggio a Xi'An per monitorare la campagna anticomunista, Chiang Kai-Shek fu arrestato assieme al suo entourage dalla guardia personale di Zhang Xueliang. Grazie a questo sequestro, le massime autorità del Guomindang furono costrette a sedere al tavolo delle trattative assieme a una delegazione del Partito comunista cinese. Il 24 Dicembre 1936 le due parti siglarono l'accordo sulla creazione di un Fronte Unito, e il “Generalissimo” fu liberato il giorno successivo.

In definitiva, l'esperienza del Fronte Unito finì per privilegiare il Partito comunista cinese, il quale poté contare su un periodo di tregua dalla guerra civile e sull'appoggio dell'Unione Sovietica. Zhang Xueliang, morto nel 2001, restò invece in carcere per la maggior parte della sua vita e non rivelò mai pubblicamente alcun dettaglio circa l'incidente.
