HEADCANONS : Jim Hacker (General)

His father was a Liberal Party counsellor for a county council, which would set his views and interest in politics.

I see him as an MP of a much more successful Liberal Party. Ideologically wise, he is a social liberal. While his biggest political hero is Winston Churchill, William Beveridge comes a close second.

Everyone in the department has been warned several times against buying him drinks for Christmas or birthday presents. Mainly because he tends to get drunk at the office. His favourite alcoholic beverage is claret.

Normally when he's drunk he either delivers a very staggered speech or makes fun of recent things that have happened. No one is particularly amused.

Most of his hours at home consist of dealing with red boxes, writing letters and reading newspapers while listening to Radio 1. If he and Annie do anything, then it's playing board games.

Private Eye has given him the simple nicknames of "Jim Hacking" and “Jim Hackless” because of his position as Minister for Administrative Affairs. “Hacking” is used when he destroys red tape, “Hackless” is used when he doesn’t.

okay so this is something I haven't built a solid headcanon around yet but I am Always thinking about it and I wonder if you have thoughts: what do you think Benji (or Luther, or Claire, or any of your preferred IMF girlies) were being charged with when they were given The Choice?

Ok ok ok this ask….I love it. I am not sure I am equipped to answer it in depth due to my (woefully) inadequate knowledge of crimes but I have Thoughts. Luther I think is pretty clear cut—he’s still committing crimes in the IMF lol—he’s a hacker and he’s really fucking good at it and the law doesn’t mean shit to him. Ethan is also straightforward, he’s a thief, the movie makes it clear. He’s also really fucking good at it. Benji…is an interesting case. When we meet him in MI3 he seems really straight laced! I can see that as a reactionary sort of thing, the Choice acting as a realization that he needs to get his act together or he won’t be able to have a Life. I am also interested in how Benji could have gotten a green card with an extensive background in crime, I think the IMF must have pulled a lot of strings to make that happen. Benji seems strongly lower middle class to me—specifically his preoccupation with fancy dress, which I adore and relate to a ton—he might have struggled financially, and Oxford was probably a real stretch. I could see him doing some…minor unlawful things…to make it possible financially to attend. And from there? I think Benji has a really strong sense of justice buried under the self preservation instincts, and a massive rebellious streak, which is part of why he and Ethan get along so well. And having done some fudging of legality to get himself situated in a good school, I could see him doing it to help others, and I could see that spiraling into something way bigger than he initially anticipated. Messing with school records, maybe even some nice fun identity fraud, stuff of that sort. We know he went to Oxford, but we don’t know he graduated! So in my mind after he got kicked out (managing to worm his way out of worse consequences by the skin of his teeth) he found he’d attracted the notice of some very interesting people. Probably literally very fascinating, and talented, and passionate, and VERY criminal. Lol. So that’s my entire theory for Benji as far as I can tell.

Claire….claire phelps she haunts me. I had the sudden thought like a lightning bolt that she was the origin of The Choice, and I think that’s my favorite thought so far. I think she could have been involved in any number of things, I honestly wouldn’t put anything past her, but I think she must have been associated with some kind of bigger criminal organization. Almost definitely killed people. When Jim found her he gave her The Choice, and she said yes, and I think Jim held that over her every day for the rest of their lives. I think The Choice came from her because I really love the idea of that direct line of transformation, from abuse to kindness/unconditional protection and affection and love.

More Crew Friendship Things

I’m actually watching Star Trek Beyond (I think this is the fourth time now, I did watch the first hour but got too much adrenaline and had to run it out) while writing this so most thoughts will come as soon as I see them on screen.

Does anyone else want more of Jim, Sulu and Chekov? Because them standing there all proud before going to their kelvin pods really makes me want more

I have a headcanon that Uhura and Chekov make a future version of Duolingo together, because she knows so many languages and Chekov is apparently a really good hacker

I also like the idea of Bones and Scotty having the same “I’m done with the bridge crew” face that shows up more and more as they get closer to shore leave and get asked to do more of the impossible

I mean, they wouldn’t want to be on another ship but after a while you’d get a bit fed up of being asked to do the impossible like it’s nothing and like there are no consequences

Spock meditates with everyone at some point, Jim’s eager, Bones uses it as a lifeline when resurrecting Jim, Uhura does from time to time to destress, Scotty, Sulu and Chekov all do at some point to but I’m not sure

I love the idea of them going on a road trip, maybe in the summer so they bring Jaylah along and get deafened by the loud music

Also what offscreen friendships do you think there are? I like to think its like that scene in friends where Phoebe reveals she has friends outside the main group. I hope you enjoyed this!

a Dark Sherlock au, where all the cannon good guys are bad and all the villains are the good guys au

john is the head of the crime organisation that eurus, consulting detective, has termed “the irregulars”. he has fought on the battlefield, and is terrifying because of how jovial and ‘everyman’ he is, even when threatening to bring down whole families. mary is his wife and a retired assassin, cooking the books and looking after their daughter. she does a few freelance wet jobs, here and there. (tbh, a bit like victoria from the 2010 movie, red.)

sherlock is john’s second-in-command and single man intelligence unit, deducing their opponent’s motives and aiding john in making backup plans in case negotiations go sour.

eurus is the consulting detective, still the era-defining genius that she is. however, despite having a grey moral code over killing villains, she is thorough in gathering evidence. sherlock keeps in regular contact with her, and sometimes she’s tempted by her brother’s line of work, but that irritating thing called humanity stops her from killing any innocents.

jim moriarty, who works in IT, is an excellent hacker and is often dragged into cases by eurus.

molly hooper, who trained as a pathologist, is an assassin/spy. she usually charms her victims for weeks, sometimes even months on end, becoming their friends and gathering information about them she can pass to john before she finally kills her target. she has killed many of john’s rivals and helped “the irregulars” become a dominant force. she’s sherlock’s favourite.

lestrade is a mercenary, with a lassez-faire attitude to life and a sharp eye. he’s john’s go-to when he needs someone getting rid of quickly.

mycroft holds a position in government, with a number of corrupt MPs and civil servants under his thumb. he keeps john and “the irregulars” in check under the threat of newspaper magnate magnussen; a scarily neutral party, magnussen has all the material he needs to expose corruption running through westminster and lead the police straight to john and sherlock’s activities.
