Jet Li, as legendary hero Wong Fei-hung, dressed as a chicken to battle a centipede costume manned by the evil Boxer Society in the film Last Hero in China (1993).
This film is NOT part of the immensely popular Once Upon A Time In China film series. It is, instead, a parody of the OUATIC series, written and directed by Wong Jing, a man known for broad, silly comedies.
Jet Li left OUATIC after making the third film sometime in late 1992/early 1993. Apparently, he'd had conflicts with writer/director/producer Tsui Hark, as well as the studio, during production. He immediately teamed with Jing to make Last Hero in China, as if to cleanse his palate of the Fei-hung character.
LHIC has great action scenes, but it very definitely does not take itself seriously. It's bawdy, goofy, and even a bit risqué. Jet Li is visibly having fun in this flick, even though he is still playing Fei-hung as the straight man.
The scene above is poking fun at Wong Fei-hung's storied expertise at the Chinese lion dance. He developes chicken fu on the spot to take on the evil Boxers and their centipede, and manages to defeat them all by his lonesome in the end. I know some hardcore fans of li and Wong Fei-hung cringe at this scene, but I enjoy it - and the entire film - in the spirit in which it was made.
Last Hero in China is no cinema masterpiece, but it's an entertaining romp that might have you chortle a time or two. Worth checking out.
