Going through my school journey a few years back I was conditioned to believe that university would be the only way forward to succeed. When it got to A-levels I decided I wanted to pursue something different at Uni... something creative and full of exciting things and once more my teachers decided to cut away at my individuality and push me to something academic. I became unhappy and anxiety ridden about what I could do at Uni that I would both love and excel at. The time was counting down and I could feel the teachers pressure pushing down upon my shoulders. After taking my exams I decided to drop uni before it even began, I wanted to know what I wanted to do over what they wanted. I was scrutinised by EVERYONE! But after a few long months I found an entry level job that I would love, I applied and got the position as a receptionist. As soon as I joined I carried on studying at the desk, helping out others in their roles and becoming actively involved within the company and now I've got ANOTHER position, higher up and in something I love. It's still a junior role but it will lead onto bigger and better things. I just want everyone doing a-levels and GCSE's that you should choose the path for you. I failed my A-levels and my GCSE maths and yet here I am doing something I love, through my persistence, attitude and hard work. At 19 I earn more than my friends, those at uni want to drop out or are unhappy because they didn't want to go in the first place. I urge you to do what you want, if that's an apprenticeship, internship, a job or University, as long as your happy that's what matters.

The L Train, After Years of Deliberation, is Staying Open

On Thursday January 3rd, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced that the L train was not completely shutting down for repairs after all. Despite nearly three years of community meetings and general upheaval to prepare for the so-called "L-pocalypse," the governor announced a new plan that would avoid requiring a full closing. While residents of Brooklyn's most populated neighborhoods are celebrating, no one is more excited about the announcement than business owners in Williamsburg, Bushwick, Ridgewood and Bed-Stuy. The MTA was expected to shutter the tunnel for 15 months beginning April 27 to fix subway infrastructure that was damaged by flooding during superstorm Sandy in 2012. Now, the governor says the work can be done in a less disruptive way using a new design that was developed after he toured the tunnel in December with engineers from Columbia and Cornell universities.

The MTA confirmed that the recommendations could be achieved and accepted the proposed changes, reversing years of planning in a matter of hours.

"We have a shared goal in this effort: to make sure New Yorkers are subjected to the least possible disruptions as a result of this necessary repair work," MTA chairman Fernando Ferrer had said. "With the L Project, and all our major projects, we’re consistently looking for new and innovative methods, and the guidance and recommendations we have received today will ease the strain on customers and help us ensure we are providing a consistently reliable service."

This of course means that Brooklyn Fire Proof, conveniently located right next to the Morgan L Train stop, will be operating at full capacity for the remainder of the year, without the expected MTA hiccups.

Introducing Brooklyn Fire Proof Classroom

We've been working on this for the longest time, but we're finally moving forward on Brooklyn Fire Proof Classroom. Brooklyn Fire Proof Classroom is a new program where we'll use our on-site facilities to put together film educators and professionals with a variety of organizations to provide students who otherwise might not be in film programs.

Our first foray into the program pairs the storied non-profit experimental film teaching center the Millennium Film Workshop with JobPath, who places adults with developmental disabilities into employment, and to utilize their skills within the community. The class is a focus of filmmaking with New Media, mainly cell phones and laptops, with a focus on art cinema.

There will also be an integrated art show, with many of the same students, who are part of Job Path's Art//Division program–and opening on February 1st–co-curated by our sister company, BFP Creative.

A screening of the films created will happen later in February as well.

Stay tuned for way more details about this. The first session of the program was a great, positive experience.

Texas A&M University in College Station: Research Assistant The lab of Charles Criscione (http://bit.ly/2wRMCXv) is searching for a research assistant. The employee will participate in various population genetic studies of parasitic helminths including a NSF-funded study that will test the role parasite mating systems have in impacting the evolution of parasite life cycle complexity (example of previous work see Kasl et al. Evolution 69:3156). The position is for up to 3 years, subject to annual renewal based on performance. The salary range is $30,000-$35,000 (depending on experience), with benefits. Job duties: Under direction of the PI and graduate students, the research assistant will be involved in molecular lab work (e.g., DNA extractions, PCR) and extensive field work. Main duties will include obtaining microsatellite genotype data, dissecting host species (catfish, crayfish, leeches and other inverts) for helminth parasites, field-collection of host species (including backpack electrofishing, trapping, and netting), driving to remote field sites, and assisting in maintaining a stocked and organized laboratory. Occasional duties include assisting with animal husbandry, and interacting with private landowners and various state officials. Education and Experience: Appropriate bachelor's degree in biology or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred education is a master's degree in biology or related field. Experience in one or more of the following areas: molecular genetics research, parasitology, or aquatic field-based ecological research. Must have a valid driver's license. Must be able to conduct field work for extensive periods away from College Station, TX (e.g., up to a month at a time). Must be able to backpack or carry 50lbs of field gear while hiking distances of 1-3 miles. Previous experience in field-based ecological research on fishes or aquatic invertebrates, or working with helminth parasites will be heavily weighted. It is imperative that the research assistant have a strong attention to detail, the ability to collect data under strenuous field conditions, and the character to maintain a positive attitude after working long hours in hot, humid, and buggy conditions.
