St Mary’s Chronicles, by Jodi Taylor
Tumblr media
PAPERBACK.     AUDIOBOOK.      KINDLE.
St Mary’s Chronicles is a series based in St Mary’s Institute for Historical Research, a seemingly quaint research college that makes historical discoveries. Dr Madeline Maxwell (‘Max’) had a traumatic childhood, and was rescued by her teacher Mrs De Winter, (sister to the Muse of History), at an impressionable age, and ends up doing a history degree at the University of Thirsk.
St Mary’s is not a research institute like any other; the Historians make discoveries by witnessing history, firsthand. ‘No, not time travel,’ Max is famed for saying, but yes, time travel. The Historians ‘jump’ back in time, record and capture the event taking place (usually battles,) and return with new evidence that earns Thirsk it’s world renowned reputation, and St Mary’s a few shillings.
Of course, this all sounds very straight forward, but no book would be complete without some disaster or other; Historians trapped in the burning St Paul’s causes no end of drama (No Time Like The Past), Max lost in the Cretaceous period (Second Chance) brings together a budding romance, and TB2 landing in the middle of a flash flood almost leaves Tutankamun’s tomb at risk of ruin (What Could Possibly Go Wrong?). The team always comes out on top, although sometimes the sub-characters lose their lives…. Poor Schiller.
Max’s unconventional approach to all situations earns her the reputation for being a liability, but is highly regarded by her loyal colleagues. Dr Bairstow is a loveable demi-god, to be feared and adored in equal measure; Markham an untidy ex-con from security is wonderfully faithful, and can always be relied upon to turn up to the rescue; Tim Peterson is a strong and kind friend, always there to wee on Max whenever required, or to bounce the pod when parking, whichever need is greater. And, best of all, Chief Farrell, the dream boat (5’10” - let’s talk about the 10”) provides romance and at least one fairly raunchy scene per book.
As for the drama, there is plenty of it. There are lots of ‘baddies’ out to trip St Mary’s up, or put a bullet in Max’s back. Isabella ‘bitchface’ Barclay, Clive Ronan, The Time Police all give the team a few problems, and if they aren’t bad enough, History herself throws the boot in now and then when it looks like the timeline is under threat…. Never A Dull Moment (that should be the title of one of the books) ...
I have listened to the series on audible, and loved Zara Ramm’s narration. She does brilliant accents (Markham’s west country is perfect, and Mrs Enderby from Wardrobe sounds as homely as you could hope for). If you listen to your books without headphones, be warned, there’s the occasional swear words, and a few scenes to make your mother blush - don’t listen to these novels with your children around! It’s worth downloading a few at a time, as soon as one has finished you want to have the next ready to go. There are also ‘half’ books, so in between book 1 and 2 comes book 1.5…. A short novella. They are all good too, although if you choose to skip them nothing too much happens in the plot that you need to know about before reading the next long one - certainly nothing pertaining to character development or a change in a state of affairs.
This series is well worth a listen, the characters live with you for a long time, they are family to each other, extended family to the readers. The plots are twisty, historical but not difficult to follow, and the historical element is interesting but not overwhelming. There’s plenty to keep you interested, and it’s a great page turner. In fact, they are so good, I have just re-listened to the series again.

My weekend read! I have to admit, I picked it up because the title made me laugh. It’s time travel/action adventure, British, and a lot of fun! The cover, though lovely, does not do it justice. It’s far more madcap and funny than the subtle cover would lead you to believe. What are you reading this weekend? Does the cover match the contents, in your opinion? #justonedamnedthingafteranother #joditaylor https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo6zYkTlVjw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2xu1ateegi20

Werbung. Überraschend wenig Bücher sind im November bei mir eingezogen. 💪🏽👍🏽 Was gut ist. The Worst Always Happens
So Jodi, I mentioned the yellow puddles to my husband- he wanted to know Why I was giggling_and the answer came back: Liquid dynamics;
pressure flow; pipe diameters and drips. So there you have it.
I have read every book in this series so the beginning confused me.
I had last read of Matthew being grown, so to have him back as a child was wrong. However, I soon got back into the swing of reading, giggling, and sheer amazement at the characters' behaviour and pickles they find themselves in.
I should point out though, that the flu pandemic mentioned about Paris, was no doubt COVIDI9.
Just not recognized in this version of history.
This is not the book to start the series though, and it really isn't standalone. There are too many characters who appear tangentially and too many past adventures.
I love this series and the madcap weary disasters and  the strange romances between unusual characters.
History is explained in a very readable form and thus the books are educational too! And very very funny, but with bathos and pathos, and sadness too.

Werbung, Rezensionsexemplar.

Let's View the past - in contemporary time
Why is Nothing ever Simple:
A special Chronicles of St Mary’s Christmas short story
It’s Christmas at St Mary’s and time for the traditional illicit jump. Except this one is perfectly legal. It’s Major Guthrie’s last jump. To the Battle of Bannockburn, no less. An important moment in History for two nations – one that warrants everyone’s full attention.
But Max soon finds herself grappling with a near-lethal game of pooh sticks, another avian incursion and two turbulent teenagers intent on piloting their own illegal jump. And that’s all before they even get near fourteenth-century Scotland.
For this is St Mary’s and nothing is ever simple .
My Review The series continues.
10 books and some small stories, and still more in the pipeline.
It is some time since I picked up this series but found the 2019 Christmas novella and read it immediately! Bannockburn and the removal of  the King’s   head by The Bruce. But did he do it? Major Guthrie wants to know. Who exactly did remove it is part of what's explored here_ and where was Mikey going with the Teapot? And what might have happened if they did go?
I then found 2 more short stories and a complete book I had missed!
'When Did You Last See Your Father?'
'And Now for Something Completely Different?
========================================
Now for Jodi Taylor. ‘Doing Time’.
She is still working her St Mary’s series, but has branched out to take Matthew back to the Time Police, and is starting a spin-off about him and 2 unlikely colleagues becoming Time Police trainees.
As always it is full of humour as per this funny statement about the business of maintenance finding what small parts always roll around and then are lost into an alternative dimension- just like socks I think.  Speak to any woman and they will tell you about how 2 socks go into the washing machine, but when you go to pair them up, there is only l.
I cannot fault Jodi Taylor. Her ST. M. books always make me giggle.

Enter the first Steam Pump! Ever....
Or was it a steam cannon?
A steam cannon is a cannon that launches a projectile using only heat and water, or using a ready supply of high-pressure steam from a boiler. The first steam cannon was designed by Archimedes during the Siege of Syracuse. Leonardo Da Vinci was also known to have designed one (the Architonnerre). [see Wikipedia]
According to our St Mary’s Chronicles, they wanted to look for a steam pump but its actions was more like a steam cannon, in my mind.. either way, it was a fun thing to go and look at, or so Markham thought.
This is more unusual storyline form Jodi Taylor as it is written from Markham’s viewpoint and in his voice.
I really loved Lingoss’ explanation of why her hair was blue – as someone whose hair is purple and some people have failed to mention it, or apparently notice until it is pointed out to them! i do wonder who the teacher was she talks about. I’m sure that they will be mentioned in future stories as we have a lot of characters at St Mary’s we still know little about and how they came to be there.
After all, History has many years of exploration that can be taken.
So yes, the best laid plans of mice and men, especially when Markham is involved, don’t always work as intended.
A great addition to the series.
