muse questions generator. generate 5 - 10 random questions and answer them for your muse. tagging whoever sees this and wants to do it. as stolen from @isjomfrue.
Has Khione learned from her past mistakes, or does she continue to repeat them? Kie has learned from her past mistakes but not in a way that allows her to deal with them; rather, she's internalized everything and operates from a "how do I protect people from myself?" standpoint after her past mistakes.
What are some things Evander and Saraswati taught Khione? How to win a fight by any means necessary, how to push the body beyond it's limits, how to best present yourself in front of the cameras, how to control the narrative, what to wear, how to act. Her parents taught her "practical" skills that a hero needs. All of her emotional intelligence comes from Farzana and Jawaharel, uncle Vijay and his boyfriend Joey Gutierrez (and the stories uncle Vijay told about his parents) and herself.
If Khione could give her younger self any advice, what would it be? Be patient, you'll find your people. You will meet those who can keep you warm. You will meet those who can help you breathe and be. Until then, do everything to keep yourself afloat. And know that, despite the way you were treated, none of it was ever really your fault.
Does Khione apologize to people because she truly regrets her actions, or because it's expected of her? She apologizes to people because she truly regrets her actions. If anything, she over-apologizes. (The only person who deserves an apology from her but hasn't gotten it yet is Yusef Abbas; wracked with guilt as she is over what has transpired between them, Kie can't bring herself to face him just yet.)
Is Khione more likely to win or lose a fight? That depends on her opponent. I do believe that, more often than not, she could and would absolutely win a fight. But if you put her in front of someone with super strength or someone with sonic scream abilities or someone with the abilities to cause vibrations, she would lose so hard and so fast. If you put her in front of someone with pyrokinesis (or something akin to that) it, again, depends on the pyrokinetic in question. I think they'd either fight to a stand-still or Kie would ultimately lose (by virtue of ice melting because of fire) but not before giving as good as she's got.
In what position does Khione sleep? Lateral - left or right side depends on the night and how she's feeling. When she was a kid, it used to be the fetal position.
What would Khione want to be remembered for? Her art and her sports. And, if at all possible, her kindness. And the fact that she loved her friends (and chosen family) more than anything. Hopefully, she helped instead of hurt. Hopefully, she could at least be the representation for one kid - like she craved and needed but never got when she was younger.
Does Khione have any superpowers, and if so, which one(s)? Hydrokinesis & cryokinesis, as well as a cryo-healing factor. She can heal other people with this as well but has been told that it's quite unpleasant; it stings, actually.
What kind of parent would Khione be? Kind, warm-hearted, fair, fun, yet serious when she needs to be; the kind of parent who has resolved to be nothing like her own. She has vowed never to raise her voice nor her hands to her children. Disputes are talked about. Problems are solved together. No one goes to bed angry. Very rarely does she get angry, and when she does, she leaves the room to cool down. She will never, ever take out her anger on the people she loves. Nor will she treat those she loves like they're objects or extensions of herself. They are their own people with their own hopes, dreams and their own personhood.
What are some things your oc says to their loved ones to tell them they love them? "I love you," and "Text me when you get home," and "I saw this and thought of you," and "You mentioned you wanted this so I got it for you," and "Do you want to do lunch this weekend? My treat!" among many others. She can't use physical touch to show people she loves them, which is why she goes so hard on all of the other ones.

I’ll always maintain that the S2 AOS Finale was a cop-out. The season took a real hard look at the way SHIELD treated “gifted” people and the team even our boy Coulson became very unheroic (except Fitz because he’s awesome like that). And then when the time for the finale - who becomes the bad guy? Is it the rival faction deeply xenophobic towards people with powers? NOPE! It’s the people with powers who don’t appreciate being cataloged and being given the “othered treatment”.
I completely agree. The continued implication that anyone who doesn't stand with Shield is in the wrong was a little questionable. And the Fitz scene was one my favorites, it was soo cute.
They dropped the ball with the inhumans a lot. Killing Jiaying for a second time, not ending the show with Daisy re establishing some version of Afterlife and becoming a leader (which was teased). And Secret Warriors was such a bust on the show!!! And whatever happened to Joey and Vijay lol!!!
But I get that it was an ensemble cast and the story of the inhumans/ powered people was only Daisy's story. But I think this why Daisy should return to the MCU. We can see what she can do with some independence from Shield, even as a mutant. There's so much potential even with limited screentime (which will be understandable bc the mcu roster is crazy currently).

So AOS S5 resolved the Dr Hall/Ian Quinn/gravitonium storyline that had been left alone since S1. Which dropped storyline do you most wish would be resolved in S7? Ignoring actor availability, pure wishlist. Ex Donnie Gill, Vijay Nadeer (they really like leaving powered characters somewhat dead in the ocean), Joey the inhuman, even Snowflake (like is she just in prison...?)
DONNIE GILL DONNIE GILL DONNIE GILL
I’ve been saying since season 2 that we never saw a body so he’s probably still a frozen chunk on the bottom of the harbor. I’d love to see Vijay resolved for much the same reason--no 100% confirmed dead body, so my man is just chilling out in a husk on the ocean floor waiting for whatever.
It would be nice to see Joey again too (actually my wishlist of past characters to see revisited given the s7 format is a mile long and right at the top is my fervent wish that Bill Paxton wasn’t dead) and yeah even though I’m ambivalent on Snowflake as a character I kinda hope they let us know what happened to her, too. Did the Chronicoms kill her? Did she get out? Bueller? Also I really hope we haven’t seen the last of Flint. I know from social media posts that Briana Venskus came back for the finale so Piper at least is still around, but I hope we get some closure on Flint as well and that maybe he can finally get some tacos.
now accepting curious anons!

25. Shadow Den
Shadow Den, New York
Sam and Lincoln stayed in the control room after securing their adobe. The computer screen blinked red, signalling the intruder, cutting off the banter of the two men. They grew serious as they took a look at the screen to identify the area of breach. They equipped themselves as they went to check on the intruders. As they reached the outskirts of their settlement they came face to face with Loki. They were more surprised seeing Scott and Hope accompanying him.
Scott and Hope guarded Loki’s flank. Lincoln and Sam looked confused, not knowing what to do. They knew their friends were under Loki’s control and they can’t hurt them.
…..
Vijay Nadeer was one of the new members of clan-less. He was still adapting to the new lifestyle. He was changed by one of the Rumlow’s men during the feral fiasco. He went back to his sister expecting her to understand. He hoped her prejudice about vampires would change. His parents’ fate was one isolated incident, he told himself. The meeting with his sister didn’t go as planned. He was trapped inside a room for days as he went through the excoriating pain of transformation. He wasn’t sure whether this was supposed to last this long. When he was transformed, his sister had tried to kill him. He barely escaped her place. Luckily, Sam had found him before he turned into a mindless creature. Sam had taken him to Bucky, who took him under his wings. Vijay had made Shadow Den his new home since then.
Vijay showed compassion and dedication to make others' lives better. As the others were more involved in fighting the council, he made sure everyone got their daily provisions. He checked on everyone regularly, making sure everything was alright. He made sure they had the best he could provide. As soon as The Council approved the clan-less, his duties became easier. They didn’t have to live on dwindling supply anymore. He helped others find jobs in the outside world and move out of the den. Few decided to stay back in the den as they loved the community life. Even with impending Loki’s attack, he carried on his task in hand. As Sam, Lincoln and Joey fortified the shelter, he was checking on the residents.
“Vijay. Evacuate everyone.” He heard Sam’s voice in his comms as he was making his regular rounds around the compound.
There was no time to think. Vijay sprang into action. He led the civilians into the secret passage away from the intruders. Bucky had told them to contact Jiaying in case of emergency as she would help. On the way out, he pulled out his phone and dialled Jiaying.
Vijay entered the tunnel at last doble checking to see if everyone had left. As he was about to step in a block formed in front of him, stopping him from moving forward. He turned around to see Loki approaching him with an evil glint in his eyes. Vijay was no fighter but he took a fighting stance ready to protect his fleeing clan members.
Loki had an evil glint in his eyes. He approached Vijay and hovered over him. “You think you can take away my faithful followers from me. THEY BELONG TO ME. I’M THEIR KING.”
“You’re no one’s king” Vijay spat in anger.
Loki chuckled low. The laugh was devoid of humour sending chills through Vijay’s body. “You stupid boy, kneel for me and I will spare you.”
Before, Vijay could answer a large iron rod hit Loki making him loosen his grip on the wounded vampire. Vijay turned to see Joey standing there.
“COME ON. LET’S GET OUT.”
Both the men tried to run away but were stopped by Loki who apparated in front of them.
…..
Scott and Hope soon had Lincoln and Sam on the ground. The duo was pulling back their punches not wanting to attack their friends. They tried to convince Hope and Scott but it was hopeless. As they were ganging up on Lincoln, Sam hit Scott in his head making him come out of the mind control.
“What the fuck is happening here?” Scott asked. His mind was buzzing and his memories were clouded. He looked around trying to make sense.
“Give me a hand, Sam” shouted Lincoln as he deflected Hope’s punches. He was suffering to keep up to her speed.
…..
Loki pressed his fingers to both the men’s temples. The same moment, a knife swirled in the air barrelling towards Loki. Without turning, Loki caught the knife by its handle; mere inches away from his face. Loki cocked his eyebrows
“Your skills have developed Li,” he drawled, turning to look at the newcomers.
Li was standing there along with Gordon, who had teleported him inside the Shadow Den. Li can produce knives out of thin air. He had been with Jiaying since his new life had started and she had helped him to train.
Gordon was blind in both eyes. He had been attacked by the Legion and their poison had rendered him blind. His vampire healing ability didn’t work on the wound. Soon after, he had met Jiaying and Li fleeing the European continent and joined them. He had been with them since then. He had teleportation power which helped them come to Vijay’s aid on Jiaying’s order.
Gordon turned in Vijay’s direction. “Both of you leave.”
Joey helped Vijay to his feet and escorted him out. Li dashed forward to attack Loki, furnishing a new pair of knives in his hand. Loki was up for the challenge. He smirked as he summoned a similar set and he met Li’s attacks. Loki was more skilled than the other. But he only defended himself. The fight went on. Li gasped for breath as he fumbled backwards. He leaned against the wall and produced another knife and threw at Loki. Loki disapparated into thin air; the knife hit the opposite wall and clambered to the floor. Loki appeared in front of Gordon. Gordon sensing Loki’s tactic grabbed Li before Loki could get a hold of him. He teleported out of the Den.
…..
“So, I have to hit her in the head?” Scott scrunched his face; uncertainty prominent in his eyes.
“Yes. Do it.”
“Is this your plan to make her break up with me?”
“Shut up and do something,” shouted Lincoln. He was barely escaping Hope’s punches and kicks.
“Okay.” Scott readied the rod ready to charge at Hope. The rod vanished from his hand leaving him bewildered.
“What the fuck, man!”
Loki walked into the corridor slowly; twirling the rod in his hand. He cast it aside. He pressed his spectre to Lincoln’s chest. A green light emitted from the tip penetrating Lincoln’s chest. He instantly dropped his fighting stance taking his place beside Loki.
Sam and Scott stood petrified not knowing what to do. Gordon teleported in between them and held the two men, each in one hand and teleported them to safety.

30AOS Catch Up!
I’m not able to participate in the 30-Day AOS Challenge, but I wanted to jot down all of my answers for my own memories. Guys, we are almost there!! I’m not ready!! But I love you guys and you have made these last years and the last 30 days so wonderful!! Thank you!!
Day 1- Favorite Season: Season 4! It was tight and well-constructed, and I just adored the A-B-C arc breakdown and how smoothly they tied together
Day 2- Favorite Episode: “Self-Control”. Truly an amazing showcase of Iain, Liz, and Chloe’s acting + plus incredible fight scenes + top notch tension and suspense. I don’t get tired of it.
Day 3-Favorite Storyline: The Framework arc because I am a SUCKER for AUs, and it was so wonderful to see Ward be good, Mace be a superhero, Coulson be normal, Fitz and May be evil, and Tripp be alive. And the references to the current political climate were just a cherry on top
Day 4-Favorite Male Character: Mack, he is the definition of a good man, and he deserves a break haha
Day 5- Favorite Female Character: My girlfriend, my hero, Daisy Johnson, of course :)
Day 6- Favorite Friendship: Ugh, you’re gonna make me choose?? Coulson-Fitz-Hunter team up in Season 2. It was the Father-Older Son-Younger Son relationship none of them asked for :D
Day 7- Favorite Ship: Philinda. The way they trust! Love! Defend! They are a SoulTP.
Day 8- Favorite Noncanon Ship: Ugh, you’re gonna make me choose again?? Skimmons or Fitzdaisy. No I will not be choosing between the two. The perfect union is Fitzskimmons, obviously
Day 9- Favorite Guest Star: Am I allowed to say Stan Lee? :( I miss him, and it was such a great scene
Day 10- Favorite Recurring Character: Ghost Rider. Robbie was so powerful and complicated and understandable and good and deserved so much, and Gabriel Luna deserves his own TV show. Honorable mention to Cal, whose arc was amazing and I love and miss him.
Day 11- Favorite Villain: John Garrett. He was a nutjob at the end, but leading up to it, he was so damn charismatic and brilliant in the way he played SHIELD the way he did. And no one could chew a scene the way Bill Paxton could. RIP.
Day 12- Funniest character: LANCE HUNTER. He brought a perfect, sincere dry wit that has yet to be replicated in the show
Day 13- Character you wish would return: I’ve said this a thousand times: Joey Gutierrez. A good soul too good for SHIELD, but I would just like to know he’s doing good. Also Vijay Nadeer (Come on, @writers, you have one more season! Tie up that plotline!)
Day 14-Underrated character: Elena “Yoyo” Rodriguez! She deserve so much love. She’s strong and passionate and smart and justice-driven and unafraid to be confident and cheeky. She inspires so much of my own self-confidence
Day 15- Saddest Death: I know what is the saddest death. You know the one. The one at the end of S5. But we do not speak of it. It has been two years. We do not rewatch that scene. We do not acknowledge it. We yell at Iain for being too good at his job. We cry. That is it. Hahaha, okay, real answer: Tripp’s! The way that he went in there and destroyed the crystal to save his friend, and it was totally useless, and she wakes up just as he crumbles. DEVASTATING.
Day 16-Best Season Premiere: I was gonna say Season 1′s because it was fun and cheeky and had me hooked from the start, but... Iain stole this award for Season 3. The suit!! The confession of love!! His devastation at “Maveth”! THE SCREAMING AT THE ROCK.
Day 17-Best Season Finale: Season 5. It revealed itself and wrapped itself up so beautifully. Daisy’s fight with Graviton was truly worthy of the MCU big screen (And yes, I still think want to see Daisy vs Thanos)
Day 18-Favorite Season 1 Moment: Too many to choose from, so I’m not gonna even try. Simmons’ “Laws of Thermodynamics” Speech. Coulson and Mike Peterson’s showdown at the station in episode 1. Skye’s “God is love”. Ward’s HYDRA reveal to the team. All of Nick Fury. All of “T.R.A.C.K.S.” (my favorite episode)
Day 19-Favorite Season 2 Moment: Skye’s transformation. Favorite episode “Melinda”
Day 20-Favorite Season 3 Moment: Again, FITZ SCREAMING AT THE ROCK. Favorite episode “Purpose in the Machine”
Day 21- Favorite Season 4 Moment: The Skimmons hug in “Self-Control”. Favorite episode again is “Self-Control”
Day 22- Favorite Season 5 Moment: Daisy’s fight with Graviton, especially when she discovers the serum. Favorite episode “Fun & Games”, but dang if “The Devil Complex” isn’t a ride and deserves a shoutout on this list.
Day 23- Favorite Season 6 Moment: The ladies night fight :D Favorite episode “Fear and Loathing on the Planet of Kitson”
That’s all for now, folks!

Tiki-Taka is coordinated by Parambrata Chattopadhyay and composed by Shouvik Banerjee and Rohan Ghose under the dispersion of ZEE5 Original Film and the entire shooting was done in the Kolkata, which is in India. The skilled and flexible entertainers and entertainer are Saswata Chatterjee, which shows in a lead function of the arrangement, Parambrata Chattopadhyay.
Ritabhari Chakraborty, Emona Enabula, and Bruno Venchuro. The account of this spins around an African person who comes to India and the conditions and the scene gets changed and he is pursued by certain cops. To realize the entire story remember to watch this astounding arrangement on eleventh September at 12:00PM IST just on ZEE5 Original Film. CAST: Saswata Chatterjee. Parambrata Chattopadhyay. At the air terminal, the medication ruler's men get an inappropriate man while Khelechi goes with an extortionist, and afterward the story makes a turn, and entire the circumstance gets changed.
Appreciate this parody of blunders on ZEE5. Debuts eleventh September 2020. Till then read our different articles and follow Dekhnews and stay tuned with us.
At whatever point we've met Ritabhari Chakraborty in the recent years, 'Khelechi Ajgubi' has surfaced in discussions, with the pretty and multitalented entertainer enthusiastically anticipating the Parambrata Chattopadhyay-coordinated film. Depending on a mixed up character, the film is currently set to debut on Zee5 as Tiki Taka on September 11. A talk with Ritabhari who had twofold the motivation to celebrate — the film's delivery and the way that she got to glitz up for this meeting.
The film was at first called Khelechi Ajgubi and is presently delivering as Tiki Taka… Now the film is delivering in both Hindi and Bangla and they needed to go with a title which fits in well with a bilingual film and something that football fans, skillet India, would have the option to identify with. We named it during the lockdown. The film should have a dramatic delivery and now as a result of the current circumstance, we have needed to go for a computerized discharge. In spite of the fact that there is somewhat of a failure since you are passing up a dramatic delivery, the great part is it will contact a greater crowd.
When did you shoot it? 2018. It is Param's executive endeavor and he got truly occupied. The film additionally has a great deal of embellishments and he puts stock in flawlessness. I was continually following up. At that point the pandemic hit us. Presently when I see the yield, I feel pleased that I am an aspect of this film. It's perfect by they way it looks. I am in any event not living in an air pocket and realize what's going on out there, devour a ton of public and worldwide substance and I am glad that the substance I am related with, it's very today and upmarket and pair with the contemporary work that is occurring.
Who is Bonny, your character in the film? She is a writer, very bhola and marginally moronic however with a brilliant heart. Mon ta puro clear and mathatao khanikta clear (snickers). That is what I look like at Bonny. No savvy individual would have purchased that thought in any case. The way Param's character (Raju, a cab driver) disclosed it to her (about Khelechi Ajgubi, an African public, being a footballer) and she gets it, even while shooting it, I felt OMG! (Giggles) Param continued saying she isn't imbecilic, only a little bhola bhala.
She is from the mofussil and on the off chance that she can't break a major news and get a strong balance in the city, she'll be offered. In this way, she has a ton in question. Bonny isn't me, yet I adored playing her. I am a major aficionado of Joey from F.R.I.E.N.D.S and I have for the longest time been itching to play a stupid character. Despite the fact that Bonny isn't Joey imbecilic. Raju and Bonny kind of meet incidentally. He takes a gander at me and thinks of this arrangement. He comes selling me a phony story and I get it and what follows is the film. The entire kind of the film is interesting. A ton of entertainers feel that parody is the most troublesome kind.
What do you feel? It is troublesome in light of the fact that your planning must be correct. You need to include your own flavors which, we continued doing while at the same time shooting Ogo Bodhu Sundori (the mainstream uber sequential which saw Ritabhari become an easily recognized name). Lolita never attempted to be amusing. Same for Bonny and Raju and Khelechi. The outfit cast includes interesting amusing characters… be it Paranda (Paran Bandopadhyay), Kharajda (Kharaj Mukherjee), Kanchanda (Kanchan Mullick), or Saswatada (Chatterjee). I don't actually think satire is the hardest.
Being a persuading reprobate or vamp is the hardest without trying too hard. Unthinkable in Andhadhun isn't exaggerating anything or Priyanka Chopra in Aitraaz or state Bob Biswas in Kahaani. I figure I would need to work the hardest for that sort of a job since I am totally a white individual. Was it scaring to be encircled by entertainers who are known for their comic planning? Truly, I never feel threatened by anybody I work with on the grounds that at whatever point I step on the shooting floor, I sense that I am going to class and there are bunches of educators and there is the head instructor who will manage me. I get truly jumbled if the chief isn't arranged... I realize that the chief must be arranged with his vision. They are so easily acceptable… stunning. Furthermore, the vitality was so high on the sets. One thing I have truly detracted from the experience is to be unconstrained.
Do you follow football? No! Sports isn't my thing. In the event that I was playing, I would appreciate. Thus, I loath watching a shoot. In the event that I am shooting, I will appreciate. I went for the Mukkabaaz shoot since I respect Anurag (Kashyap) to such an extent as a chief. I was there for the peak go for two hours and afterward was chilling with my closest companion since I got so exhausted following two hours. AK is so chill and arranged with his vision. That is everything I could accumulate. Individuals figure you can truly get a great deal.
You really can't on the grounds that film-production is an entire cycle. Things being what they are, you've never really liked an athlete? Not on the grounds that how great a player he is, yet, state… (David) Beckham. I have my reasons. Take a gander at him and you will likewise have your own reasons. Anyway, did you gaze upward 'tiki taka'? I asked Maddy (Madhuja B

A DEEPER LOOK;
BACKGROUND: Status: Alive. For Gus, this has been a very important thing his entire life. That is not an exaggeration. With a best friend like Shawn Spencer, it’s surprisingly easy to be at risk, sometimes multiple times in one day. When Gus was younger, he nearly got away from Shawn thanks to schooling and his parents interference, but when Shawn helped the Guster family, Gus’ parents backed down. Years, and a sham marriage passed, Gus was living his best life as a pharmaceutical sales rep, making 48k a year. He was where he belonged. With a best friend like Shawn Spencer, it’s surprisingly easy to have one’s life plans go awry. Gus still worked as a pharm. sales rep, but too often, he ended up being the getaway driver in the police cases Shawn managed to worm them both into. As the years passed, Gus still complained about it but when the chance came to go back to his comfortable career and say goodbye to his best friend, Gus chose to say goodbye to the comfortable life, knowing it wouldn’t be the same if he was on his own.
KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Bill and Winnie Guster (parents), Joy Guster (older sister), Shawn Spencer (best friend), Burton Guster I (uncle, namesake), Mira Gaffney (ex-wife), Rachael (ex-girlfriend) and her son Maximus.
WEAPONS: The Blueberry.
POWERS/ABILITIES/SKILLS: Tap dancing, expert safe cracker, vocal manipulation, bomb defusal, incredible sense of smell.
GREATEST STRENGTH: His friendship with Shawn.
GREATEST WEAKNESS/FLAW: His friendship with Shawn.
OUTFIT THEY WOKE UP IN: Pinstripe button down shirt, tan slacks, dress shoes.
FAVORITE FOOD: A poached egg with hollandaise sauce on an English muffin.
ONE FEAR: The “head peel.” (It’s his fourth greatest fear.)
ONE HOPE: To survive the strangest case he’s ever been on and to really let Shawn have a piece of Gus’ mind if they ever see each other again.
ONE HEADCANON: Gus won’t go anywhere without The Blueberry to the point of clinging onto it with all his might until he at least gets to have his trusty car with him.
THE QUESTIONNAIRE;
How does your character feel about being dropped into the expanse program? Are they excited? Suspicious? Confused? -- Suspicious as heck. He’s still convinced this entire thing is an elaborate escape room Shawn’s cooked up for him.
What does your character hope to see the most during the expanse 009’s journey? -- Home.
If your character could bring one thing from home, what would it be? -- While it’s not exactly how he remembers it, he has his Blueberry so he doesn’t need anything else.

50 Years of Going to Shows, Pt. 9: Jazz in St. Louis
I am in the middle of my fourth year of attending shows at Jazz at the Bistro and it is a great joy to have this formative music back so centrally in my life, to make this my go to music, to think about music in jazz terms. From that first Johnny Winter blues jam, I’ve always been drawn to virtuosic playing. Certainly rock and ur-jam band guitarists were a start. But I saw Norman Blake flat pick amazingly in those early years and later Celtic fiddlers and box players amazed me. Chamber music but also Irish sessions have an intimate conversational aspect. But it’s jazz that has it all. I sensed that in the early 70s and it’s where I’ve come home to now.
I kept my eye on jazz before the Bistro, particularly through Webster University’s wonderful jazz faculty and their performances. I would return to tried and true recordings, starting with Miles, Monk, and Mingus and Bill Evans at the Village Vanguard. I knew I couldn’t miss Sonny Rollins when he played UMSL’s performing arts center in 2009 and had even better tickets for a return a few years later that he had to cancel. He was vital, transforming from a tentative, slightly stooped old man into a flurry of ideas dancing lightly around the stage delighted in the choruses he unfolded for himself and others. He had a guitarist (not a pianist), a trombone, drums and percussion, and Bob Crenshaw. Standards and Ellington. But it was a bit of a one off.
It has taken season packages at Jazz St. Louis for four years now to get the engagement and focus that I now have. It’s fitting that the first one was Bill Charlap and his trio. That configuration is where I’m glad to start, going back to Oscar Peterson when I was 8. I’m almost too vociferously anti-musical theater, except jazz musicians have done wonderful things with and burnished the Great American Song Book. Charlap is one of our key curators. But these aren’t museum pieces in his hands; they are a dynamic legacy kept alive by use. There’s taste, drive, invention in tradition. Just like that Johnny Winter concert in early fall of 1969, there was something I had to have more of.Next up was Vijay Iyer, also in a trio. A different aesthetic but he worked a jam into Epistrophy, so tradition prevails. And the piano trio’s elasticity continued to win me over. The Bad Plus begins the year in St. Louis and we were where the rebooted when Orrin Evans replaced Ethan Iverson. I saw them once with Iverson, couch toured that opening run of BP2.0, saw them last year and plan to see them next in January. I started to get them seeing them live, seeing how the compositions work and how they work them. I think they’re a little warmer and organic with Evans, just as smart and clever but grounded. I’ve seen Benny Green swing hard and Cyrus Chestnutt do so as well but then throw in a good chunk of French Impressionism. Emmet Cohen’s band was the foundation for an odd mix of horn players I wanted to see: Marquis Hill and, for a second time, Melissa Aldana. The five of them didn’t quite jell, but the Cohen trio is a working band I would see again. Kenny Barron was a monument of taste and command and Chick Corea was impish, a grand old man of the music in spite of himself. There were standards but also a glorious exposition on Paco de Luca’s Zyriab, pulling together the Arabic roots of Flamenco. So, piano trios always with the Bad Plus, Christian Sands at the Sheldon Concert Hall down the street (where I saw Eliane Elias with Marc Johnson do wonderful Brazilian stuff but also some superb jazz evoking Bill Evans), and Connie Han ahead.
Now, we’re Miles Davis’s hometown and folks know that. The SF Jazz Collective came to the Bistro in 2017 with a program of his music (wide ranging—Tutu and Bitches Brew as well as Nardis for an acoustic ensemble) as well as compositions from band members in the ensemble. It’s a grand concept—a four horn front line with vibes and rhythm section, with some general stability but it’s morphed over the years. Everyone composes and arranges and they celebrate a composer each season. Our band was Sean Jones, David Sanchez, Miguel Zenon, Robin Eubanks, Warren Wolf, Edward Simon, Matt Penniman, and Obed Calvaire. They return to the Sheldon this year for an In a Silent Way tribute with mostly the same folks—so anther chance to see Sanchez and Zenon who were particularly impressive. Russell Gunn evoked Miles’s Blackhawk set with Jimmy Cobb holding down the drum chair very capably at age 90.
After piano tours and Milesiana, there are tenors. So I couch toured a conversation and partial set with Benny Golson—not quite in the room with a legend but a vivid experience. I am intrigued and enthralled at the playing of Melissa Aldana who crafts vivid lines that fill space quite fully (she has some great trio work) with ideas rather than tone. Her own quartet had over active drumming from Tommy Crane whereas the Emmet Cohen show pulled her in multiple directions (blusier, mostly) than she quite fit. She is a star in Artemis, but shares the front line with Anat Cohen and Ingrid Jensen, but she is one star among many. So I haven’t quite heard the ideal Aldana show. But I am glad to keep trying.
I’ve been able to see Joshua Redmond twice. As great as his tenor invention is, his band (with Aaron Goldberg) was what impressed me most. The way longstanding bands like this (and Branford Marsalis’s with Joey Caldazzaro) think together is very special. Marsalis and Caldazzaro would magically complete one another’s thoughts and both tenors took great delight in what their bands could do, soloing all the better because of it. In these bands, but most of them, including the trios, I an struck with just how good drummers have become, really playing music beyond rhythm. Allison Miller has a Jazz Night in America video on “melodic drumming,” so it was a treat to see her with Artemis, listening so hard but happily to inflect the music so well. She was almost the one to keep one’s eyes on, except that Anat Cohen exudes such unbridled joy at all times. Her quartet show was a real highlight of 2018-2019. I am so glad she and Ben Goldberg are making the clarinet a modern jazz instrument.
Joe Lovano came through with the brilliant and adventurous John Scofield who plays with Phil Lesh and Warren Haynes. I find myself shying away from jazz guitar preferring the piano. But that was quite a show as was Scofield again with Jack DeJohnette’s Hudson project which jammed out originals and The Band/Hendrix/Joni Mitchell very well. DeJohnette has quite a palette of drums and especially cymbals. We were 4 rows back on his side so we had a literally ringside seat for that magic at the Sheldon.
I have made a point to hear the likes of Marquis Hill, Robert Glasper, Stefon Harris, and, most recently, Terence Blanchard to hear how hip hop is being incorporated into jazz as funk was in my youth and rhythm and blues was in the ‘50s. My younger generation didn’t bring that music home, so I don’t have that sensibility. But I would be an old fart in extremis if I didn’t welcome those influences. That said, I am more intrigued with how SFJAZZ takes the essence of electric Miles into acoustic music than vocoders and loops and reverb. But, every time these newer shows have lots to delight in, including drummers who move the beat around and are not confined by any strictures.
The music is supposed to grow. And I get to watch it.
--------------------
This entry is the last one of this 10 part series this Fall celebrating the 50th Anniversary of concert going, marked by my second one from 11/4/69 with Led Zeppelin. Yes, this is part 9, but, rather like the Beatles releasing Abbey Road before Let It Be (actually, not like those monuments at all), I have already posted a part 10 about the shows I didn’t see. But, wrapping up with jazz makes a certain amount of sense.

Ideal endgames for AOS
LMD!Coulson: (depending on what Clark Gregg wants) Either permanently decommissioned or available for future cameos.
Melinda May: Retired/part-time teaches at the Operation Academy. May x Happiness becomes canon.
Daisy Johnson: Director of SHIELD. Cameos in future Marvel movies (particularly if Secret Invasion comes to pass) and in the Ghost Rider tv show.
Mack and YoYo: Retired. Hints that Mack will have a chance to catch up with Bobbi and Hunter. YoYo, Joey Gutierrez, Vijay Nadeer, and Robin have a short cameo in a future Secret Invasion movie as Daisy’s Inhuman Reserves.
Fitzsimmons: Retired in Scottish cottage/part-time teaching at Science Academy. They have their first kid.
Deke: Takes on a leadership role at SHIELD. His Think Tank officially works for SHIELD too. Continues dating Snowflake or someone he meets during the time travel adventures. Deke dating someone from either another planet or another time period feels right to me.
Piper: Daisy’s second-in-command. Helping to take care of Davis’ family.
Flint: An official SHIELD agent.
Diaz: is okay.
SHIElD itself: Stronger than it ever was, although a reveal that one of the agents is a Skrull would be hilarious.

Sports movies that would be more fun to emulate in real life than ‘Field of Dreams’

Photo by Charles Ommanney/The Washington Post via Getty Images
MLB wants to emulate ‘Field of Dreams’ next season, and that’s fine. But if we’re being honest, big league adaptations of these movies would be even cooler.
I’ve never seen Field of Dreams. It’s probably fine? From what I gather it’s sickly sweet with a lot of I Love You Dad-type stuff engineered to exploit our too-human hearts.
The effect is apparently pretty strong, because Field of Dreams is still revered 30 year after it was released. So much so that Major League Baseball will try to bring the movie to life by making the Yankees and White Sox play in an Iowa cornfield next season.
If you build it …@Yankees. @whitesox. THE Field of Dreams. August 13, 2020. pic.twitter.com/RuBpS04BgG
— Cut4 (@Cut4) August 8, 2019
Ignoring the fact MLB’s promotional image implies Aaron Judge, Gleyber Torres, Tim Anderson, and Yoan Moncada are ghosts walking out of the cornfield, and therefore will have shuffled off this mortal coil by the time the game is played, this could be fun! Baseball is a goofy sport that is enhanced when played in goofy places. Why not!
But it does get us thinking: What famous sports movies would be even more fun to replicate for a one-off event? Here are some of our ideas. Go ahead and tell us yours via your nearest comment section and/or Twitter account. Being realistic awards you no bonus points.
Eddie (1996)
Pretty sure everyone reading this has had this fantasy. Take a vocal fan out of the stands, let them coach the Knicks, and if they win the fan gets to keep the job until the Knicks lose again. There’s no risk to a cratering team. In fact, the changeup might help break the loop of hope and letdown (and hope and letdown) that the Knicks have been stuck in for 20 years. — Louis Bien
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)
I want this. I want this, like, yesterday. How have we gone 15 years without someone trying to take the world of professional dodgeball by storm with professional wrestling-esque characters, overwhelming production values and all the pageantry it entails?
The best part is that since this is a one-off event we can totally get Jason Bateman to do commentary and stick Chuck Norris courtside. I’m almost upset I’m sharing this information here, because I know some wealthy industrialist is going to steal this idea. — James Dator
Nacho Libre (2006)
First off, yes, wrestling is a real sport. The action might be slightly scripted but the moves are real. Imagine a random cook in a monastery becoming a luchador. It’s an underdog story for the ages. He even fights for a great cause: so the orphans in the church can eat better quality foods. It’s a heartwarming story filled with adventure and danger, mostly from the fear of having their bones broken from getting power-bombed. Picking a random person and making them a part-time luchador is an event worth watching. Especially if one of their first matches is an eight-person battle royale. Sign me up for the chaos. - Vijay Vemu
Teen Wolf (1985)
I just want to see people get eaten. — Christian D’Andrea
Air Bud (1997) or Treasure Buddies (2012)
The Air Bud archives, including its spinoff series Air Buddies and Santa Paws, is more voluminous than the Police Academy and Mission Impossible franchises put together. And you really couldn’t go wrong picking ANY of its 14 installments. SO MANY GOOD DOGS.
For the sake of brevity, I’ll narrow it down to two: OG basketball-playing Air Bud, which still holds up 22 years later, and which seems like the most logical choice if we’re talking about replicating it in real life. (Here’s one suggestion for the starring role.)
The other is Treasure Buddies, which I have never seen and technically isn’t a sports movie but gets the nod based on a Wikipedia description that belongs in a museum:
The Buddies find themselves on an Indiana Jones style adventure.
Yes, please. — Sarah Hardy
Over the Top (1987)
Don’t you want to win an arm wrestling championship? — Russ Oates
The Sandlot (1993)
The Sandlot — or more specifically Sandlot 2 (2005), where girls exist and play sports — is truly the only answer here. Since about age 7, all I wanted to experience was playing baseball at the sandlot, and that hasn’t changed as I’ve gotten older. Just make sure James Earl Jones is present. — Kennedi Landry
Brink! (1998)
Brink! is a Disney Channel original movie about extreme in-line skating and how capitalism exerts its influence on our passions. But the X-Games already exists, so we don’t need to bring skating to life, we just need ... more milkshakes to the face.
Pup ‘N Suds forever. — Michael Katz
Like Mike (2002)
I need to see a 4’ tall child dunking on NBA Players. — Tyson Whiting
Ed (1996)
In this film, Matt LeBlanc (who is basically channeling Joey, because what else is he going to do, he is Matt LeBlanc) winds up as an errand boy for a professional minor league baseball team. One of his errands has him cross paths with the titular Ed, a chimpanzee who, it turns out, is really, really good at playing baseball for unsaid reasons. Hijinks ensue. This film has everything — a fart-off, some light animal torture, a magical coin (?), and yes, a meta Friends reference — all of it terrible. In fact, we called it the worst sports movie ever made.
But am I going to sit here and pretend it wouldn’t be awesome to play minor league ball with a farting monkey? No, reader. I am not.
— Ryan Simmons
Slap Shot (1977)
Nobody wears a helmet. Fighting, while not exactly legal, is certainly encouraged. As is putting on the foil. Winning captain has to strip down to his jock strap. Don Cherry would spontaneously combust, leaving a technicolor apparition muttering about “Old Time Hockey” for all eternity. — Paul Flannery
White Men Can’t Jump (1992)
Blacktop basketball, Jeopardy!, and undefeated Wesley Snipes drip. This movie has everything anyone could ever want in a movie, and also two-on-two basketball should be an Olympic sport. — Michael Pina
Brewster’s Millions (1985)
Quasi-sports movie with Richard Pryor portraying a pitcher for the Hackensack Bulls and John Candy serving as his catcher. I’d happily work to spend $30 million in 30 days and have no assets to show for it to inherit $300 million. — David Fucillo
Space Jam (1996)
There is no better time to do this than the present. With talks of wanting to raid Area 51 and kick it with aliens, we can surely assemble a group of five extraterrestrials, have them take the talents of guys like Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, or other NBA stars, and do a live-action remake of the original Space Jam. Only difference is that LeBron James replaces Michael Jordan. — Harry Lyles Jr.
Luck of the Irish (2001)
This Disney Channel classic has a description as follows: “A teenager (Ryan Merriman) must battle for a gold charm to keep his family from being controlled by an evil leprechaun.”
Do I need to explain anything else? — Whitney Medworth
Blades of Glory (2007)
It’s really hard for me to comprehend why we haven’t seen an all-male figure skating pair since this movie came out more than 10 years ago, but hey, I’m not in the movie business. Not only was this a highly underrated Will Ferrell film in my humble opinion, the sports world deserves to see two men complete the Iron Lotus (successfully, I feel like I need to add) on live television, dammit.
