davenchurch are the two old men who are maybe a little past their prime but have a shared history with each other and no false expectations that the other doesn’t have flaws or faults. they drink homemade wine that’s absolutely terrible but theirs while watching the waves rock their boat more gently than any cradle and they sit together, unspeaking, for hours into the night watching stars that aren’t their own trace across the sky thinking “would we still be here? if lucretia hadn’t done this to us, would we still be in love? is it our shared sorrow and hurt that’s brought us together after a over a decade apart?” john, however, is merle’s ex husband who he’s divorced 62 separate times but can’t convince to stop hanging around his house. john pisses on the side of merle’s boat and davenport has to shove him off the hull with a broom before he can start waxing poetic about chessgames at 2:55 am

what gets me about “kiss my ass you sanctimonious bastard” is that a lot of fanon has portrayed it as this grand moment with like, merle yelling it heroically. but to me it was a resignation. it was merle giving up on a guy he hoped he could reach. it’s a moment of “yeah well. i was hoping this could work out. i’d hoped we could be friends. but there’s nothing i can do here bc you’re choosing to be an asshole and refuse to come out of your own black hole of negativity that you built yourself here.” it’s a moment of acknowledging that this person you wanted to help is bringing you both down with their wilfully toxic behavior and though it’s a pity, you have to cut your losses and get out of that fucked-up one-sided friendship. and that’s way more poignant to me than yet another heroic yelling moment
