Jonquils Bakery & Cafe is one of my must-see stops
This eye-catching bakery specializes in 3D layered geometric desserts - their apple is particularly making the rounds on instagram.
This place is crowded! Part of it is I am there later in the day on the weekend, but even so it seems really packed.
This also unfortunately means that the menu selection is limited (for example the last apple is bought before I get to the counter…I got pictures of it in the case though :p )
I’m not sure if the menu rotates, or if once they sell out for the day they sell out, but the selection did feel very limited compared to pictures I’d seen online. (Maybe both?)
It was also odd that the pastries in the case did not match what was on the store’s menu/billboard. So you didn’t have much time to decide between being able to get close enough to see the case and ordering.
Moreover the floral teas they advertise on their website were not available- which is sad since it’s half the reason I wanted to come here.
Still I’m able to try at least two of the desserts and get a white tea.
I got a mango raspberry tulip & ‘passionate love’
Passion love- dark chocolate mousse. passionfruit coulis dark chocolate crunch chocolate sponge
Tulip- mango mousse raspberry coulis vanilla crunch orange sponge
The tulip was quite good. The passionate love I had high hopes for, it had passion fruit filling, and lots of chocolate- but was honestly not great (didn’t even finish it!)
To add to the annoyance of it all I was eating this outside on a very wet table since there simply wasn’t space inside- and I didn’t want to wait for something to open since I didn’t even have a tray to hold these confectionaries on.
Glad I got to try this place all and all, but I’m not sure I can recommend it to anyone. Maybe if you’re able to go when it’s less crowded and don’t mind being surprised by the selection?

Jonquils Cafe & Bakery: Boston, MA -  Pastry Chef, Dinara Kasko’s, main method baking involves using a 3D printer to construct a silicon mold that could then be used to shape a cake. Her works of confectionery art employ the mathematical principles of the Voronoi diagram and biomimicry.

A little afternoon pick-me-up at Jonquil in Boston. The coffee on the upper RH side is a rose latte. Was still warm enough to sit outside. (at Jonquils Cafe & Bakery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXZgN9lvlD-/?utm_medium=tumblr

Jonquil's Cafe and Bakery Plans to Open in Boston's Back Bay
by Marc Hurwitz It looks like a new dining spot is on its way to the Back Bay of Boston, and it may be focusing on steamed items. According to a Facebook page from the place, Jonquil's Cafe and Bakery is planning to open on Newbury Street, with an earlier article from The Boston Sun saying that the eatery was planning to have both indoor and outdoor seating and healthy food items that would mostly be cooked by steaming. A menu has not been seen yet for the restaurant, and it is not known when it might open, so keep checking back for updates. The address for this upcoming dining spot in the Back Bay is: Jonquil's Cafe and Bakery, 125 Newbury Street, Boston, MA, 02116. Follow us on Twitter at @hiddenboston

Salem/Boston the good the bad and the wish I’d done, summary
Good
Charlie card, multi day pass. This is personal preference, but I found it super nice to just be able to buy a multi-day pass for the metro for the trip. Saved me having to think about each individual ride’s cost or worry about if it was worth it to jump off and see something on the way to a larger destination.
Modern Millie - adorable vintage inspired modern clothing shop!
ghosts and gravestones trolley tour 10/10
Boston public library
Quincy Market - sense of history with good food!
Bad
Emporium 32
Not bad exactly, just disappointing - this was listed as a ‘must see’ from multiple accounts when I was doing research, but I didn’t feel like there was much to it. Still neat if you pass by, but not worth seeking out specially. Just some hats and kicknacks. Didn’t even feel particularly witchy.
Green Dragon Tavern - Boston cream pie was rubbery and awful. Service was also really bad- don’t eat here.
Wish I’d done/known
Stayed in Salem, even if it would have only been for one night
Mainly due to logistics
-Wouldn’t have had to pay attention to when the last train left
-Could have done an extra later ghost tour
-Could have had a place to store purchases without having to carry them around all day; and or had a last chance at any “maybe I’ll get this after all” buys.
-Likewise would have had more time to fit in any extras I didn’t make it to before closing
Booked tours in advance to deal with crowds
I internationally didn’t do this since I wanted to keep my plans in the later part of the day flexible…but I hadn’t planned on parade crowds. Given the extra visitors due to festivities it probably would have been better to book some tours after all.
Everything closes pretty early
Lots of museums/attractions close around 5 in both Boston and Salem, which can seriously limit what all you can see in a day.
Jonquils Bakery & Cafe
Menu is seasonal & selection is limited, also expect crowds
The Mapparium- located in a Christian Science building, not a normal library
