Films I’ve Loved This Year

I have already written reviews on some of them (not seen in this post), that you can already read here. So make sure to also do that.

I’m completely laid out in bed extremely sick, I thought between the delusional fevers, bomb exploding headaches, and literally feeling like I’m dying, I’d share the other films I’ve absolutely enjoyed watching this year.

I started up a separate account via Instagram to just post film, but having multiples is beginning to be too much, so from now on any other film content aside from the blog here will be on @ starrymayx.

So to start off the list here we go…

These 90s “Noir” films started my whole new movie Escapades, and I’m so glad they did -

Thrashin - 1986

Starring: Josh Brolin, Pamela Gidley

What I liked: There was so much awesomeness in this film and a feel good story of triumph. Basically it’s about two skateboarding gangs, having beef, mix in lots of skating, graffiti, punk rock aesthetics, and a love story, and you have yourself a pretty badass film. Plus they overcome their rivalry in the LA Massacre challenge, and there’s even several rat tails. 🤣 Definitely worth a watch!

I really wish I could skateboard. I would have been so rad. To all my skater friends and Bo’s over the years, mad respect. 🤘🏻

The House on Sorority Row - 1983

Director: Mark Rosman

I swear Scream Queens was influenced by this film.

I really liked it. Loved the lighting, still had a seventies type feel, storyline was really good. Definitely a film to check out if you like really good horror, without all the super special effects.

*For any strobe light sensitive people* like myself out there, there is a scene where it’s wild,

Pump Up The Volume ✊🏻 1990

Director Allan Moyle

This movie is 🔥 Definitely a pioneer for all things talk radio but from a non-narrative perspective. Films like this and indie radio programs paved the way for our now podcasts. I loved the way it was written, the development of the characters personal selves, and breaking the rules.

I love me some Christian Slater 💓

*trigger warning: there is a scene that deals with suicide and those scenes always get me. So I wanted to mention that.

Out of Bounds - 1986

Starring: Anthony Michael Hall

Siouxsie and the Banshees 🤘🏻💓

& Meatloaf (in like 3 scenes)

What I liked: The cinematography of downtown LA & Venice Beach California, (actually the whole film is beautifully done). The 80’s colors, Dizz’s home, her style. The fact that Anthony Michael Hall was a badass hero, taking down a heroin drug man with his knife throwing skills. Really good film.

2 Days in The Valley - 1996

Written and Directed by: John Herzfeld.

Starring: James Spader, Eric Stolz & Charlize Theron

Synopsis: 48 hours of intersecting lives and crimes in The Valley of Los Angeles.

Why I liked it: Artsy Cinematography, James Spader obviously, and the correlation of numerous parties all being connected, going through individual stuff but being thrown into the mix of chaos. Plus sunglasses just seem to add viable cred to it. Why are sunglasses so cool yet mysterious?

Shampoo - 1975

Director: Hal Ashby

Starting Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn, & Warren Beatty

I throughly enjoyed this film mainly due to the Jim Morrison/Sharon Tate style vibes it gave off throughout, and all the stylish decor/fashion. The Morrison looking guy played by (Warren Beatty) is basically a lover to many of his women hair clients (he does hair).

I really appreciate the 70’s swank and aesthetic appeal in this film. I’m also obsessed with Julie Christie’s glam Tate starlet look and I wish I could pull off bangs! Goldie Hawn is also in here and a younger Carrie Fisher.

From the 70s eye shadow, purple outfit I want, the main girls style, glamorous hair, river grotto, la house party with body paint and strobe lights (which that part I had to turn away - sensitive), it still rocked.

Based in the LA canyon/hills it’s definitely worth a watch to see the web of desire and aesthetic unfold. Keep your eye out for the creepy art in one of the scenes that just didn’t quite belong. 😳

Additionally there was some dialogue between two parties in the kitchen about questioning the lead male’s (hairstylist) orientation, and the f word was used a couple times. Didn’t like that part.

Really glad we’ve evolved on how we should identify people and what’s right to say and not to. A person can be gay or even not, but using derogatory terminology to hurt them is very low par. If you still do that. Stop.

Chopping Mall - 1986

Director: Jim Wynorski

Mall Location: Sherman Oaks Galleria

I loved this film. For reals.

Nothing better than a mall unleashing new technology security robots, only to go horribly wrong. Which I already knew where it was going as soon as it started 😂

Anyways a group of mall employee friends and two others throw a party in a bedding home store and get freaky - typical 80s horror, which I love. Then basically the robots go crazy and savage, hunting down all of them in a terminator/stranger things vibe kind of way. The aesthetic, 80s style, and scenery are very appealing, all the way down to even the playboy underwear from Miss Virgina Slims herself. Camel ciggs just won’t cut it. 😂

December 3 ~ Love Hard

🎅 Countdown to Christmas 🎄

My husband and I watched this movie last week. And I loved it. It is embarrassing at times, but fun. It also takes up one important issue, that not only men are more focused on the exterior of a person, but that also women is. Yes, it is also a classic cheesy Christmas Movie with a happy ending, but I love that. So I enjoyed this movie and I will definitely watch it again.

RENT-A-PAL (2020)

“He talks to you. He listens to you. He understands you.”

The above is the tagline to the fascinating new horror film Rent-A-Pal, and even on the poster you can’t quite decide if that description is a selling point or a veiled threat.

Taking place in 1990 – still sociologically the 80s although technically the 90s – Rent-A-Pal is based on a fascinating era-specific oddity. “Rent-A-Friend: The Original Video Companion” was a VHS tape for lonely people, essentially a one-way conversation that the viewer could “interact” with. The Rent-A-Friend was Ben Hollis, who later went on to become an Emmy-winning Chicago TV personality. The videotape took advantage of a sad, but very viable human dilemma: Have no friends? What if you could rent one?

Of course the world has moved on and social media has made us more connected. Zoom and Facetime and the like have made “Rent-A-Friend”’s clunky interaction obsolete. Still, there is something charmingly seductive about this low-tech video buddy. And something just a bit creepy, too.

That’s the germ for writer/director Jon Stevenson’s thriller. What if your Rent-A-Pal could actually interact with you? What if his intentions are not as pure as his tan-and-blue khakis and sweater vest getup suggests? What if you are so desperately lonely and unstable that you are not even sure if your conversations with your new “pal” are real, or if they are all in your head?

Wow, that’s quite a meta concept. And in Rent-A-Pal, it mostly works very well.

The lonesome loser that is at the center of the action is David (Brian Landis Folkins), a desperately solitary man in Denver who lives with and cares for his mother (Kathleen Brady) who is suffering from dementia. Because he must be there for his mother fulltime, David can’t work. He has no friends.

He is so desperate for love that his one extravagance is a membership at Video Rendezvous – an old-school 90s dating service where you go in, make a video tape and hope to find your perfect match from dozens of other single people’s videos. However, like everything else in his life, the whole video dating scene is a complete disaster. After six months he hasn’t gotten a single nibble, however he is constantly paying for upgrades and services.

It’s at Video Rendezvous that he meets his “Rent-A-Pal,” a VHS tape stuck in a bargain bin of specialty videos. The Rent-A-Pal is Andy (Wil Wheaton of Stand By Me, Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Big Bang Theory), a pleasantly charming companion who interacts in obvious and not so obvious ways, until it starts to become more and more noticeable that he has some really dark shadings. Or is that all in David’s head?

David and Andy interact in subtle and funny ways, which is pretty amazing because Folkins and Wheaton never physically appear onscreen together. (Obviously, since Andy is just a person on a TV set.) You’re never quite sure why Andy becomes such an indispensable friend to him. Andy can be kind of a dick; clingy, jealous and he plays two very cruel pranks on David. And what’s the deal with that sweater vest?

However, this isn’t so much about Andy – well it is, and it isn’t – it’s more about the potential unraveling of David. His life, his desperation, his loneliness, his depression, his arrested development, his responsibility to his mother. When life finally deals him a good hand – he finally gets a bite on Video Rendezvous and Lisa (Amy Rutledge) may be the perfect woman for David – Andy doesn’t take it well at all.

It’s a terrific conflict. I wish I could say the resolution lived up to the idea, but the movie ends up spinning out a bit. Honestly, it gets a little more violent than necessary; I know this is a thriller but the psychological horror it displays is much more interesting than physical horror. It doesn’t by any means ruin the film, but I was hoping for a slightly better ending than the one we get.

By the way, they didn’t take selfies in 1990, but otherwise the film is spookily era-specific, and yet at the same time it is oddly timeless. Rent-A-Pal may not quite stick the landing, but the film has so many interesting ideas and quirky interactions that it is well worth the rental. Just don’t get Andy mad.

BREAKTHROUGH (2019)

The problem with religious films is that you take from them what you brought in. If you are already a believer, you’ll find the film an affirmation of God’s greatness. If you are not so devout, you may feel manipulated, or even preached to.

Take Breakthrough, the “based on a true story” tale of John Smith (yes, that really is apparently the guy’s name, not just an every-man type of moniker), a teenage boy who fell through the ice in a frozen lake. He was underwater in the freezing cold for about 15 minutes and should have never survived. The overwhelming odds are that if he did live, he would be badly brain damaged. Yet, after an almost week-long coma he bucked the great, great odds and made a full recovery.

Religious viewers will undoubtedly take that as a miracle; his mother’s prayers, the community’s love and a viral “Pray for John” Facebook page saved the boy’s life. More fact-based viewers will probably feel that it was the hard work of the EMTs, doctors and nurses and the child’s own strong constitution that allowed him to live. More cynical sorts will think it is all a coincidence, an act of chance that this boy was able to return to normal when most others in his position would have died. In fact, assuming this boy survived due to his mother’s strong faith could be taken as a bit insulting to all the other people who did not make it through a similar situation, who may or may not also have had strong faith.

Any of those possibilities may be right, and they all may be wrong.

Some people may say God wanted John to live so he brought him back from the abyss. Others might say that if God really wanted John to live, he would not have let him be so reckless or stupid to blithely ignore – and even mock – the guy who was warning him and his friends moments before the accident that the ice was not safe, and they should get off of it immediately.

Again, both sides may be right and both sides may be wrong. Everyone will have their opinions. No one will ever know.

The problem with Breakthrough is that it goes under the surety that its viewpoint is the correct – and only – one. God has saved the day. The boy is brought back to life by his mother’s faith and the love of the community. People who feel any doubt are shunned and berated. Even the shell-shocked doctors and the atheist EMT tech who saved him are forced to acknowledge that they have seen a true miracle.

If the audience doesn’t see it from that angle, they are in for some hard time sitting through the sanctimonious parts of Breakthrough.

This dichotomy is best embodied in the lead character, the mother of the young boy, Joyce Smith – played by Chrissy Metz of This is Us. (John can’t really be the lead since he’s in a coma for more than half of the film.)

Some people will look at her and see a woman of strong faith, a charitable woman, active in her church and a tirelessly devoted mother. (A “tiger mama,” as one character calls her.)

Other people will see a stubborn, humorless and judgmental woman. The kind of woman who scolds “Language!” when her son says the word “hell.” The kind of woman who thinks she knows better than the doctors who are caring for her son and berates them for not sharing her strong faith. The kind of woman who pushes away friends and even her husband because of her absolute need for control. The kind of woman who even dislikes her own pastor because he has spiky hair, tries to relate to the kids and used to be pastor in a church in – of all God-forsaken places – California!

At one point she even yelled at her husband, “I am the only reason that John is alive!” Yeah, okay.

Honestly, I was squarely in the second camp. Joyce Smith was one of the more actively unlikable lead characters I have seen in quite some time. Every time she said to God in prayer “I know you love me,” I could not help but wonder why. Joyce was just a few “isn’t that special”s and “Satan!”s removed from Dana Carvey’s old Saturday Night Live character the Church Lady. At least the Church Lady was amusing.

The fact that the lead character was so off-putting, so insufferable, made it hard to appreciate any of the truly gripping aspects of the film. There is even a short, inscrutable sidetrack towards the end when John is being mocked at school for being a living miracle, which is sort of the epitome of evangelical victimhood.

Look, there is a place in film for religious fare – even if it tends to be rather preachy and pedantic. There is an audience for films like this and they will undoubtedly be moved by it.

However, Breakthrough will not change the mind of anyone who is not already a convert. Most of them will feel like they were forced to sit through a two-hour long sermon.
