#novvinylchallenge day 30 - album of the year: 4-way tie • telefon tel aviv • dreams are not enough full of hell • weeping choir surachai • come, deathless djunah • ex voto • yeah, yeah, big surprise, i couldn’t narrow it down. but truly, every one of these records has helped me through the giant pile of shit that has been 2019. there are a few other records that i haven’t gotten on vinyl yet that fall into the same category, but i’m happy to highlight all four of these excellent albums. also, huge thanks to @vinylxdenim & @jaclyn_oconnell for putting together this fun group project; i hope everyone had as good of a time as me digging through their collections! • #vinyl #telefontelaviv #tta #josheustis #joshuaeustis #fullofhell #surachaisutthisasanakul #surachai #djunah #djunahband https://www.instagram.com/p/B5grG9iFwDH/?igshid=1rwm4mq2b7g3f

It was our partner #larrycollins we asked who is this man , and at that time all he had out was #headlikeahole 12” and Larry told us he was going to be a n important artist. Well after 2 Academy Awards and a Gazillion records sold - Larry you could not be more right. This record is so amazing! It’s a wonderful aural shower. Trent makes brilliant music and this album is no exception His textual exploration- yeah that - is what makes his records that awesome! This one shines with #comebackhaunted #everything + #copyofa - the musicians that contributed like Lindsey Buckingham , Adrian Belew, and Pino Palladino are the best of the best - go see Trent - he never disappoints - right now he’s taking a break to make sure his 5 kids under8 don’t get sick , however I’m sure once we get out of this pandemic he will be headlining everywhere Enjoy (at Hollywood Hills) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTYgvijnlOE/?utm_medium=tumblr

Telefon Tel Aviv and their steely, electronic beats.
Yeah, I know. I said last night and I didn't do it. I was too busy being all snowed in and...
Actually.
Last night would've been ideal for me to write this up. Oh well, I'm doing it now.
Telefon Tel Aviv first caught my attention when they did a series of remixes for Nine Inch Nails (song: "Where Is Everybody? (Version)") and A Perfect Circle (song: "3 Libras (Feel My Ice Dub)").
This was around the time their first album, Fahrenheit Fair Enough was released. I dug further and discovered that the group was made up of two guys: Joshua Eustis and Charlie Cooper. If memory serves me correctly, it was a completely instrumental album filled with beats and electronic tomfoolery. I don't know if that phrase makes any sense to you, but it made sense to me as I typed it so we'll just go with that. Really, you could go with a simpler description like "Instrumental album with electronic beats," but that doesn't tell the whole story of what their sound was like. There was keyboard work, tons of synthesizers, an Eastern influence and lots and lots of noises. At the same time, though, the album was very conservative on its electronic output, relying more on low, deeper sounds that rumble your speakers in anticipation of the steely, electronic beats that would come into play.
Their next album, Map of What is Effortless continued the use of synthesized keys along with those same, crazy electronic percussion, but this time, some of the songs had lyrics. That album definitely tapped into an R&B influence while also capturing a dance club vibe (mostly heard on "My Week Beats Your Year) to drive it home. It wasn't so much a departure from their previous album as it was an advancement of their sound.
And then 2009 came and saw the release of Immolate Yourself. Listen to Fahrenheit Fair Enough and then this album, and you'll swear that each album was made by a different group. The dance influence was still there along with the steely, electronic beats (a phrase that I'm going to use for EVERYTHING now), but the overall sound and vibe of the album stemmed from 80's New Wave. But, it didn't have that vintage, aged sound that lots of music from that era had. This was something different and... newer.
Every song has a vast soundscape that feels like it could stretch for miles. Whether it's a loud song like "Your Mouth" or a subtle one like "Mostly Translucent," every song sounds vast, expansive and great in its scope. Also changed to accommodate these songs were the lyrics and how they were presented. Instead of being forced to the front with the music supporting them, they were used more as background noise and are very poetic. To this day, Eustis won't provide the exact lyrics for each song, leaving it to the listener to interpret and discern what is actually being said, which with this album, isn't an easy task. The album changes tempo around the midpoint before bringing itself back up at the end with the title track, "Immolate Yourself."
What's haunting about this album is how dark it seems to go at certain points, and that could have something to do with Charlie Cooper, who died of tragic circumstances on January 22nd, two days after the album was released. I remember being awake early the morning of the 27th and randomly checking TTA's Myspace page and seeing the news from Eustis, who had kept Charlie's death private until that day. I sent an email to Matt Dunphy, who runs The NIN Hotline, and found that he hadn't heard the news, and then posted an update onto the Hotline's front page to announce it. It turned my perception of the whole album onto its head as it took on a few different meanings for me then.
I hadn't really kept up with news on the band, but I saw that Josh Eustis recently announced that TTA would continue as a solo project and that he was writing new music that may or may not be a TTA release. Regardless, TTA has provided tons of interesting, explorative music that never ceases to amaze me in its depth, organization and emotion. It's perfect for a rainy day, driving in your car, working out, or reading. Give them a listen and see if they can do for you what they've done for me. Thanks for reading.

#novvinylchallenge day 15 - heartbreaking album: clint mansell / mogwai / kronos quartet • the fountain low • the curtain hits the cast mouth of the architect • quietly radiohead • a moon shaped pool a silver mt. zion • he has left us alone... sons of magdalene • move to pain • once upon a time, i would have included “the devil & god...” and “daisy” by brand new but jesse lacey can go straight to the hell of boiling oil for being a piece of shit • #vinyl #clintmansell #mogwai #kronosquartet #thefountain #lowband #lowmusic #mouthofthearchitect #radiohead #asilvermtzion #sonsofmagdalene #josheustis #joshuaeustis https://www.instagram.com/p/B47_4FLlM8Q/?igshid=bx9bilc8ocgi

#novvinylchallenge day 11 - soundtrack to your life: @telefontelaviv • fahrenheit fair enough, map of what is effortless, immolate yourself, the birds, dreams are not enough • i had 16 records picked out for today, but i realized that i was being a) silly and b) overzealous. the truth is that telefon tel aviv (and all of josh’s projects) have been with me since 2000 when i first heard his remix work for both NIN and a perfect circle. i’ve seen josh perform as telefon tel aviv twice (in 2010 and 2017) and with the black queen once (in 2018). i’ve met him and talked to him and he is such a kind, genuine human being. the fact that he makes music that resonates so deeply within me feels like such a gift. thanks for being amazing <3 (p.s. i also could have posted this yesterday for an artist i have a crush on) • #vinyl #telefontelaviv #joshuaeustis https://www.instagram.com/p/B4wR2MIl1cC/?igshid=1v2cf8qxz13h9

new addition / now playing: telefon tel aviv • dreams are not enough • 2x12” 45rpm on translucent gold splatter, 2200 copies • i don’t know how to convey my feelings about this album. TTA (and pretty much every project josh has been involved with) has been such an important part of my life. it’s amazing (and also understandable) that it’s been ten years since a new album was released under the name telefon tel aviv, and this feels like home. now please excuse me while i cry through the entirety of this record. • #telefontelaviv #josheustis #joshuaeustis #vinyl https://www.instagram.com/p/B27PFM3JH7V/?igshid=1az4xb0znx2nc
