So, Japan Sinks 2020 was....a fucking masterpiece. Holy shit. My cousin was super insistent we watch and I just truly wasn’t expecting it to be so RAW.
Every single little detail in the characters reactions to even the smaller things hit hard.
Can someone Please make a gifset of the scene where Kite brings Haruo to the DJ booth to play his record and he freezes for a sec but then lets out a whole ass scream that he’d been needing to let out since everything fell apart?
That to me was such an important moment for his character. :(

Japan Sinks 2020: Do you want a tidy up storyline? Too bad, life is a fucking train wreck and all of us are alive by pure luck. Everyday thousands of people survive horrible things and other millions die because of the stupidities shit ever, so swallow your fucking tears and start moving before you die as well. A love triangle? We don’t have time for that shit, society is falling apart. Do you think that the Cult arc was useless? So is life. No, we don’t care if the logic doesn’t make sense, Japan is fucking sinking. Oh, did the protagonist finally been rescued? Time to drop the weight of all that awful shit that happened in a 14 year-old and force her to face the bottled up trauma.
Me: Incredible, your goddamn sociopaths. 10/10, would recommend

I see a lot of people complaining about the storytelling in Japan Sinks 2020 but let me just remind y'all that culturally, there are differences in how characters respond to situations as opposed to Western storytelling- especially in this particular style of narrative which is called "Ma" or "Negative Space"- where the focus is on the characters themselves, and the events unfolding around them as they see it. That's why other characters pass and go with no dive into their backstories. It's unnecessary to the two main characters' journey through this place and these events.
Not to mention, artistically, pacing was probably intended to give whiplash. The soundtrack was probably intended to be discordant to the visuals playing onscreen.
So, it's not "bad" storytelling. It's just not "western" storytelling. It's not something us dumby poopoo brained foreigners are meant to understand without prior knowledge or exposure.

I just finished binge watching Japan Sinks 2020 and i gotta say Masaaki Yuasa has become my favorite anime director (he is also the only anime director i know so it’s not a very long list, but still). I love how he played with emotional extremes and honestly really liked the jarring juxtaposition of music and visuals/narrative. Even through it all i could still feel the underlying theme of hope throughout the series. Still broke my heart tho. And the way in which the characters were humanized? the small moments early on that came back at the end? the polaroids? i ate that shit up man. It felt distinctly apocalyptic 70s in the best way possible. If you watched devilman crybaby for how it emotionally destroyed you please give Japan Sinks a try.

Public Instance Fields For Classes In JavaScript
Previously, to declare class fields you had to put them in some kind of method in the class (usually the constructor). For example:
class Car { constructor() { this.name = 'Not Set'; this.hp = 0; } format() { return `${this.name} - ${this.hp}`; } } const defaultCar = new Car(); console.log(defaultCar.format()); // Not Set - 0 const miata = new Car(); miata.name = 'miata'; miata.hp = 155; console.log(miata.format()); // miata - 155
With public instance fields the constructor can be removed as well as some of the boilerplate code:
class Car { name = 'Not Set'; hp = 0; format() { return `${this.name} - ${this.hp}`; } }
This makes the type of the field clearer as well as ensuring the core API of the class is defined at the top. This also makes it less liekly to forget to initialize defaults for fields.
Public instance fields are supported in Node.js 12 and the latest Chrome and Firefox. Other modern browser support should come this year.

I know that the thing about Ayumu’s leg going untreated is a reference to her Survival Guilt and declining mental health caused by trauma, and that in a more realistic setting she would have the literal cut treated way before, because there’s no way that no one would have noticed that shit after so much time and Mari woul have 100% got it treated even if she had to restrain Ayumu to do it (don’t underestimate the power of a mom, she would have bandaged shit and scolded her about the risk of infection even if everything was completely normal and you know it)
...But Ayumu losing a fucking leg because she refused to treat a small cut for weeks has the same energy of one of the thousands of stupid people refusing to take the anual flu vaccine because “it’s just the flu, no one dies to the flu” (the flu can kill you if you aren’t careful no matter how healthy you are) or people refusing to wear a mask during the COVID-19 outbreak

to talk about JS2020 again: I wish we were able to learn more about the characters, because there was a lot of potential there to flesh things out a bit more that wasn't tapped into. i get that it's essentially the apocalypse for everyone there, so it's not time to sit around the campfire and talk about your childhood trauma, but still.
there was nanami, who we know nothing about except her name and the general area she lived in; we could've learned about her and who she was to the family and ayumu. like what was the reoccuring jealousy (?) that we saw from ayumu regarding nanami and koga interacting?
speaking of koga - there was a whole ass. thing with him there regarding sprinting, that's left unresolved and unexplained. we can work out that he used to be a incredible sprinter before stopping for a unknown reason, and that's it. considering that his death literally hinges on him sprinting again, you'd expect it to be something we see with him narratively, but it's rarely mentioned.
with his death - afterwards, we hear kite talking about how they haven't raced yet: where was that dynamic?? that line hit, but it would've hit harder if we had it set up earlier. we don't focus a lot on characters interacting beyond the family, which is a major shame when we see relationships like nanami/kite and their interactions with koga. the closest thing we get is kunio interacting with go, but even then that lasts for only a few episodes - we see them become close, but not the process it takes to get there.
i dont wanna make this too big of a post, so i'll stop now, but essentially: japan sinks set up a bunch of characters and dynamics, showed us that there was something there, that things had been fleshed out and then... never did anything with it. i love japan sinks, but it's kinda dissapointing, and i wanna see more where we can learn about what they didn't originally show us
