It seems that COVID-19 has claimed a member of the Heavy Metal family. Spanish-language news sources are reporting that the great Argentine artist Juan Gimenez has died. He had been in a hospital in his home country since March 22, after returning from Spain, where he lived. Gimenez is perhaps most famous for his work on Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Metabarons series. Over the years, Gimenez was a frequent contributor to Heavy Metal, both with and without Jodorowsky. Muere de coronavirus el dibujante argentino Juan Giménez

] BUENOS AIRES. * 3 de abril de 2020. | AP. El dibujante argentino Juan Giménez, autor de historietas como “La estrella negra” y “La casta de los Metaborones”, murió víctima del nuevo coronavirus. Tenía 76 años. El artista falleció el jueves en la provincia de Mendoza, de donde era oriundo y a donde había llegado hace unas semanas procedente de España, donde residía desde fines de los 70. Giménez, quien junto con su compatriota Joaquín Lavado (Quino) era uno de los dibujantes argentinos de más renombre, murió el jueves en el Hospital Central de la ciudad de Mendoza, a unos 1.100 kilómetros al oeste de Buenos Aires, donde el 22 de marzo ingresó a terapia intensiva. Se caracterizaba por su estilo realista especialmente en historietas de ciencia ficción, y trabajó en producciones argentinas y extranjeras. Integró el equipo que escribió y dibujó varias de las publicaciones de la revista argentina Fierro y también participó en algunas entregas de la francesa Metal Hurlant, entre otras. Entre sus historietas más conocidas están “La estrella negra”, “Basura”, “El cuarto poder” y “La casta de los Metabarones”, ambientadas en mundos futuristas y fantásticos. Giménez fue homenajeado en la convención internacional de historietas fantásticas de Rosario Crack Bang Boom (Argentina) de 2015 y expuso en el Centro Pompidou de París.
