So, yeah, my dice are utterly terrifying, or else all the luck I lack elsewhere ends up going into random dice. Not that what happened is necessarily lucky...

See, @hyperewok1 had Remi go to the Shrine of Pelor in Egref to have a specific magical item created for Alisaie, to allow her aasimar-granted wings to last longer, at least for flight. They were aiming for about an hour. However, since this was a slightly unusual circumstance (and some phenomenal text RP), I made a couple of mechanics about how it might go a little bit above and beyond. So I rolled percentile dice: on a 25, 50, or 75, she’d be able to have an hour total, as in if she ended the effect after ten minutes, she could re-engage it and have 50 minutes left. But if I rolled a 100...

GUESS WHAT I ROLLED. (I swear, my fucking dice...)

So Remi told Alisaie what the circlet she’d had made was supposed to do; Alisaie went speechless and very smoochy, and was encouraged to try them out. She activated her wings, had a second of nothing but, “...ow...”, and then BAM. Physical wings, like unto a deva or an angel. Thankfully she was wearing a largely backless dress at the time.

For all it was not what anyone expected, it was some phenomenal RP all told as everyone went their own shades of “What the FUCK” and tried to determine the best way to proceed. Alisaie’s keeping the wings (she does love to fly, and it’s probably nice to have something that Antimagic Field or Dispel Magic won’t touch) and is currently figuring out ways around wardrobe issues, seating arrangements, sleeping arrangements and use of Disguise Self when she has to be more inconspicuous than literal wings allow. Remi’s going to have words with Ziriel, and probably the individual who crafted the thing in the first place.

...But later, because wedding reception. A pair of very unexpected wings wasn’t going to fuck with their wedding.

......Honestly, everything else kind of did that anyway.

Hazel’s Quickflight cousins were hosting the reception at their restaurant, The Farmer in the Dale, and wound up more or less pummelling Hazel, Clarity, Darvin and (because Darvin drew her in to deflect some of the questions) Ava. Clarity put it best: “It’s ... like ... a halfling gelatinous cube...”

Remi’s parents more or less cornered Kreia Bendis (the brass dragon who runs Alama-Ver, its capital Al-Zorhai, and the Brass Arrows) about her denying Alisaie her rightful place with the Brass Arrows as punishment for someone else’s misdeeds. Corri Crestwind is a force to be reckoned with, and after the rest of the Five Claws joined in, Kreia Bendis gave up and decided, since they were all part of the same group and were going to have to hunt together if they were hunting in Alama-Ver territory anyway, asked what Clarity and Barnabus had helped kill before inducting Alisaie, Barnabus and Clarity into the Brass Arrows. Clarity and Barnabus were a little confused, but there you have it.

Vieve Alled, the silver dragon who runs Eun-Bac (home of the People and the Silver Vault, capital city Damyl), told them that they’d be given a task by whatever hunting pack of the People they ran into on the outskirts, which if successfully undertaken would guarantee them entry into the section of the Silver Vault of their choice. She figured it’d be faster than making them go all the way up to Damyl and then back down to perform the necessary task. She also warned them that she would house them when they finally reached Damyl, and that no one leaves her table at their shared meal without telling three things about themselves. Ava worried about this until people effectively reminded her of how interesting her life has actually been to someone who isn’t living it.

Remi made a joking remark about how she wanted a cut of the profits from that play about her and Alisaie. Never make joking remarks around Cal Etielle; that particular copper dragon takes the weirdest things seriously and left mid-reception to shake said cut out of somebody. Succeeded, too, so now there’s a significant but as-yet uncounted amount of platinum in Remi’s possession.

Cal Etielle also made a toast to the couple. So did Darvin; it was very moving.

The Crestwinds, bakers by trade, made a glorious wedding cake, intricately iced to reflect the lives of the happy couple to date. Corri also baked Remi some chocolate chip cookies (Remi’s favourite).

Kreia Bendis propositioned Hazel, who’d been giving Kreia Bendis looks of, “You’re hot but TERRIFYING!!!” for basically ever. Hazel meeped a lot and went to ask Clarity what to do about this. See, their relationship is a little complicated because Clarity’s asexual and Hazel’s ... not ... and they’re striking a balance to allow Hazel’s physical desires to be met while still keeping ... romantically monogamous, if that makes sense. (I mean, it does to me, but Clarity has the same outlook as I do in that regard.)

Side note: off-screen, Clarity said that’d be complicated for her because they would probably have to work with Kreia Bendis on and off and knowing that would be stressful for Clarity, so not so much. Clarity also demanded an apology from Kreia Bendis, who said, more or less, “I’m not psychic - I just asked a question. Message received but I don’t owe you a damn thing”. Both sides have points so it’s honestly just interesting.

Reception went well in spite of (or maybe in some ways because of) the weird shit, and Remi and Alisaie went for their two-night stay at one of Egref’s luxury resort hotels.

The next in-game day, and thus the next session, is going to be all about shopping and bits and pieces because we’re missing a @miaaoi (belated Canada Day outing) and a @lindira (literally 4th of July) and anyway, dice bullshit means that Alisaie needs to sort out her wardrobe. Again.

Don’t we just have the most fun?

Springfield Residents to Mass Lawmakers: “We Can’t Breathe”

Climate Justice Coalition Urges State Reps to Close Loophole for Polluting Power Plants in MA Climate Bill

(Springfield) A diverse coalition of community, social, civic, and public health organizations sent a strongly-worded letterto Springfield state representatives urging them to close a loophole in the House climate package that would pave the way for a controversial wood-fired power plant to be built in East Springfield. The bill, which the House passed on July 31st, has been sent to a conference committee to resolve differences between the House and Senate climate proposals.

The House 2050 Climate Roadmap bill (H.4933) creates a new greenhouse gas emission standard for municipally-owned electric utilities in MA, known as municipal light plants (MLPs). The new standard requires MLPs to sell increasing amounts of “non-carbon emitting” energy to their retail customers. However, the bill defines “non-carbon emitting” resources to include, among other things, biomass power plants.

“The House climate bill throws a lifeline to wood-burning power plants, like the one proposed for Springfield, which are too polluting to qualify for Massachusetts’ renewable energy subsidies,” said Verne McArthur, who serves on the steering committee for the Springfield Climate Justice Coalition. “There is no way that this plant should be considered good for our climate or good for our health. This stinks to high heaven.”

Sy’air Bey, environmental justice organizer of Arise for Social Justice, which has led the fight against the Palmer biomass plant for more than a decade, said, “People in our community can’t breathe. Springfield has been given a failing grade for air quality from the American Lung Association and named “Asthma Capitol of the USA” for the last two years. People living in low-income communities of color with poor air quality are at increased risk of dying from Covid-19. The last thing that Springfield needs right now is to become a sacrifice zone to produce inexpensive power for wealthy communities in the eastern part of the state.”

“Defining biomass power plants as “non-carbon emitting” is categorically false and would roll back years of progress in Massachusetts,” said Laura Haight, U.S. Policy Director for the Pelham-based nonprofit Partnership for Policy Integrity. “You cannot wave a magic wand above a 275-foot smokestack and make it disappear – the pollution is real.”

The typical biomass power plant emits more than 150% as much CO2 as a modern coal plant per megawatt hour of electricity, and 350% as much as a new natural gas plant. The 35-MW wood-burning power plant proposed by Palmer Renewable Energy would generate more than 400,000 tons per year of CO2 emissions. Under its state permit, the Palmer plant would also spew out hundreds of tons of air pollutants each year that are hazardous to human health, including fine particulates (PM 2.5), smog precursors, heavy metals and other cancer-causing chemicals, and generate more than a ton of ash per hour.

Palmer has been actively trying to gain access to lucrative municipal contracts and clean energy subsidies for at least the past year. Arise, SCJC, and PFPI sent a joint letter to Energy New England last May after learning that the power broker was encouraging MLPs in eastern MA to enter into long term power purchase agreements with Palmer, falsely touting its climate benefits. At the time, ENE claimed that the Palmer plant would be likely eligible for MA renewable energy credits by Fall 2019.

The Baker Administration subsequently proposed weakening the eligibility requirements for biomass power plants to qualify for MA’s Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS), which would have made the Palmer plant eligible for an estimated $10-12 million each year in MA renewable energy credits. Springfield residents, together with environmental organizations across the state, vigorously opposed these rule changes, which are still pending.

The language in the House bill would bypass this process entirely and allow any biomass power plant, no matter how polluting, to qualify as “non-emitting” for the purpose of the new MLP greenhouse gas emissions standard.

The letter concludes:

We urge you to speak to your colleagues on the conference committee and tell them that this is an environmental injustice of the highest order. Springfield deserves the same protections as everyone else. The House may not have been aware of the implications of this language when it passed its climate bill last month. We hope we can count on you to work with your colleagues in the conference committee to correct this language before it becomes law.

In addition to the Springfield Climate Justice Coalition, the following groups signed on to the letter individually: ARISE for Social Justice; Climate Action Now; Community Action Works; Longmeadow Pipeline Awareness Group; Neighbor To Neighbor; New North Citizens Council; Pioneer Valley Project; Public Health Institute of Western Mass; Sunrise of Western Mass; and the Unitarian Universalist Society of Greater Springfield.

This week in Grand Theft Auto Online, Rockstar announced the arrival of the Progen Emerus supercar, RC Time Trial races, Arena War bonus rewards, and more.

July 23, 2019: The Diamond Casino & Resort Grand Opening[edit]

This week in Grand Theft Auto Online, Rockstar announced the launch of the Diamond Casino and Resort, detailed available activities, and more.

The newly-opened Diamond Casino & Resort is located in Vinewood, on the corner of Vinewood Park Drive and Mirror Park Boulevard.

Sensor Sweep: Creeps by Night, Grip, Gatekeeping, The Royal Netherlands Indies Army

Books (Don Herron): You may not know, but way back in 1931, the up-and-coming Wisconsin writer August Derleth teamed up with the newly famous detective novelist Dashiell Hammett to edit a collection of supernatural horror fiction titled Creeps by Night: Chills and Thrills.

Over the next forty years, Derleth would become one of the most prominent figures promoting the literature of horror, not only with the many anthologies and collections issued by his small press Arkham House, but with a baker’s dozen of his own mainstream anthologies, beginning with Sleep No More in 1944.

While Hammett’s fame as an author would only increase from that point on, Creeps by Night would be his single significant brush with the weird tale.

Writers (Don Herron); It wouldn’t engage a flight of fancy to say that Robert E. Howard was known to have exaggerated a bit in his correspondence. Whether he thought he needed to impress his friends by inventing — or improving upon — fights or marathon drinking binges he had either participated in or had been a witness to is something that most likely will never be completely uncovered by any Howard scholar.

But I’ve got one for you.

A 4th of July letter to future Arkham House co-founder, and Howard’s fellow contributor to Weird Tales, August Derleth has always attracted my attention.

Publishing (Walker’s Retreat): It’s time, folks. We’ve got the writers eating the lunch of the SJW-dominated tradpub world of SF/F novels and also, slowly, trying to find a way to bring back the old magazines so that short fiction can find a market again. Across the street (so to speak) we’ve got the comics guys kicking the SJWs in the crotch and taking their milkshakes. In both vidya and tabletop, SJWs are losing ground as their antics keep showing the customers how fucked in the head they are- opening the door to sane competitors like Alexander Macris and the Pundit. And behind the scenes, grinning with satisfaction as it all unfolds, is the Supreme Dark Lord sipping his wine while atop his skull-adorned throne.

Gaming (RPG Pundit): Well, the last couple of classic rants have generated a lot of discussion on the subject of social interaction in RPGs, and why I think most systems for “social mechanics” (much less ‘social combat’ or things like that) are abominable. But a few people seemed to have some sense of confusion as to how I could in one blog entry praise the mechanics of the Reaction Table from D&D as an example of a useful social-RP tool, and in another condemn the idea of using social skills/mechanics/whatever as a substitute for actually being required to ROLEPLAY it. This is clearly a result of people not having really read, or not understanding, how I make use of the Reaction rolls in OSR play. So it’s time to be more specific about the nuts and bolts of it.

Gaming (Niche Gamer): Here’s a rundown on the new mode and the game itself:

Releasing in fall 2018, GRIP will feature, among other modes, 19 challenging ‘Carkour’ maps in which players are challenged to master a series of increasingly mind-bending stunt courses. Eighteen maps are Point-to-Point, culminating in a final, ‘open’ map – a playground of jumps, twist and turns packed full of collectibles.

From the short, sharp, shock of the Easy (Airtime, Speed, Squiggly, Tubes, Upsy Downsy) and Normal (Live Jump, Scoops, Slide) courses to the more demanding Hard (Angles, Endurance, Rainbow Road) and Nightmare (Half Tubes, Loop Gap) runs, there’s something to challenge everyone irrespective of skill level. Carkour Mode is the perfect tonic for those looking to concentrate on fine-tuning their timing, speed, and spatial awareness before heading back into Campaign or multi-player modes.

Culture (Kairos): By now it should be obvious to everyone that we are all, in a real and quantifiable sense, going back. Even a mainstream media organ as lost in the fog of Current Year chronological snobbery as the New York Times is now forced to admit that American culture has regressed as hard and as far as the 1980s.

I have spent the last month trapped in a wrinkle in time. Not the film, mind you, though that was quite the fashion moment, and not the book. Rather, sitting by the runways, hour after hour, day after day, city after city between Feb. 7 and March 7, I could feel myself slipping further down a wormhole into the past. One moment it was 2018; the next it was 1981 (or ’85, or ’88).

But here’s the thing: I have been there before. I’m not sure I want to go back.

This is jailhouse / sea lawyer bullshit. The problem here is that we’re seeing a conflation of what gatekeeping commonly means to make the D&C/EVS/alt-comics crowd look like hypocrites.

Gaming (Gaming While Conservative): It’s no exaggeration to lay the blame for the slow death of Western Civilization squarely at the feet of Lorraine Williams. Her takeover of TSR led to the overwhelming popularity of Loser D&D, a style of play adopted by the broken souls who now lead the world. Had Winner D&D continued to enjoy the popularity it had when Saint Gygax stood at the helm of the USS Tabletop Gaming we would live in a world today that would make film Wakanda look like a real world African nation.

Writers (On an Underwood No. 5): Every year I attend Howard Days, seeing the Howard House and Museum is a highlight, especially if the shop at the back of the house has new items for sale. This year was no exception. Among the items that were for sale in the museum shop this year were t-shirts with new designs. It’s not easy finding REH themed t-shirts, so getting new designs at the REH House and Museum is a nice plus.

Military History (Osprey Publishing): Until 1945, Indonesia was a Dutch colony known as the Netherlands East Indies. In 1930, the area had over 60 million inhabitants and was a major exporter to Japan, providing some 13 per cent of its oil needs – second only after the United States. Following Germany’s occupation of the Netherlands in May 1940, Japan decided to expand its influence in the Netherlands East Indies.

Defending the colony was the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL). This force, designed primarily for colonial policing, underwent a series of cutbacks in the interwar years before adopting a modernisation programme in 1936, which focused on building up a strike air force, introducing tanks and increasing the firepower of the infantry and artillery.

Eureka Springs was founded on July 4th, 1879 as people flocked to take advantage of the healing properties of the spring’s mineral water. The healing waters brought 10,000 people by the end of the year. It was known as the most prosperous town in Arkansas. However, in a ten year span from 1883-1893, the town caught fire and burnt to the ground 4 times. It’s a quaint tourist town with a dark past.

The Crescent Hotel started construction in 1884 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. In 1885, a stonemason named Michael fell to his death. In 1886, the hotel opened for business. From 1908-1934 the hotel was a women’s college. In 1937, Norman Baker made the hotel his Baker’s Curing Cancer Hospital. Baker caused the death of thousands. In 1946, the hotel was renovated once again and reopened as originally intended. It’s known as one of the world’s most haunted hotels.

Massachusetts solar workers rally for PV support at State House

Over 100 solar workers from across the Commonwealth rallied at the Massachusetts State House to urge the Legislature to act in support of the state’s solar industry. The solar industry employs more than 11,500 people in Massachusetts, and has brought more than $5 billion of investment to the local economy in the last few years. With the end of the legislative session quickly approaching on July 31, the need for the Legislature to take action comes at a critical time for the Commonwealth’s solar industry, which continues to fend off attacks at the state and federal levels.

Organized by Vote Solar, MassSolar, Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the Coalition for Community Solar Access (CCSA) and the Solar Energy Business Association of New England (SEBANE), workers and leaders from the solar industry held over 60 meetings with legislators and staff to urge them to support the Commonwealth’s solar workforce through action on the net metering caps, SMART program tariff, the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) and undoing the poorly designed Monthly Minimum Reliability Contribution (MMRC) charge on new solar customers in Eversource territories across the state.

“For longer than a decade, Massachusetts’ solar success has led to consumer savings, economic growth, job creation and environmental benefits. These benefits are at risk due to an uncertain policy environment that threatens the state’s solar industry,” said Sean Garren, Northeast senior director at Vote Solar. “Already, Massachusetts has lost more than 3,000 solar jobs across the state in the last two years. We need the Legislature to help get the Commonwealth back on track by standing up and reversing Eversource’s solar tax and raising the caps that limit the number of residents and businesses who can enjoy the benefits of solar through net metering.”

According to a recent report by The Solar Foundation, solar jobs in Massachusetts—after nearly a decade of growth—saw a double-digit decline in 2017 for the second consecutive year. One factor that has contributed to this decline is the existing law places a cap on net metering participation, which prevents customers from choosing to install solar. It has been a year and a half since the net metering cap for public, private and community shared projects in National Grid’s service territory was hit, slamming the brakes on hundreds of solar projects in more than 170 cities and towns. As part of their meetings with legislators, solar advocates and employers urged that the caps be removed or raised by at least 5% to match the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Targets (SMART) program, as is the case in proposed legislation including H. 2712, S. 1824, S. 1831 and other bills.

“Solar businesses need a stable market to successfully operate. In Massachusetts, the Legislature and the Governor can create that stability by reversing the unsupported Eversource rate decision, raising the net metering caps and making sure the new SMART Program works as intended,” said Dave Gahl, SEIA’s director of state affairs for the Northeast. “We are urging lawmakers to listen to the thousands of solar workers employed here in the Commonwealth demanding smarter solar policies. The time to act is now. The Massachusetts solar industry depends on it.”

Local jobs, taxpayer savings, reduced electric bills and public health benefits are being lost every day as solar companies face serious decisions about whether to continue to invest in Massachusetts, which will become an uncertain market without this critical legislation. In particular, the recent approval by the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) of Eversource’s proposal to tax solar customers using a complicated new electric rate—called a demand charge—has made solar less economic and new solar customers’ bills more unpredictable in the future. To address this, a proposed bill (S. 2314) would repeal Eversource’s solar tax and set new parameters for any charges like it. This legislation is critical as it would give solar companies and customers the confidence to continue to invest in Massachusetts.

“As a Massachusetts solar worker, I love helping customers save money, while knowing we’re protecting the environment at the same time,” said Keisha Perez, senior regional sales manager, Sunrun Inc. “My message to our lawmakers is to continue allowing the Massachusetts’ solar industry to succeed by raising the net metering caps and eliminating Eversource’s solar demand charge.”

Beyond addressing the net metering caps and reversing the Eversource solar tax, businesses and developers highlighted the importance of a strong SMART program and RPS to continue to drive demand for solar energy. Companies and workers urged legislators to press the DPU to ensure that the SMART program—the next iteration of the state’s solar incentive strategy—moves forward quickly and continues the growth of community, low-income, municipal and other public entity solar. In order to meet the Commonwealth’s climate pollution reduction goals and continue to develop a strong clean energy economy, advocates also urged legislators to raise the state’s RPS to 3% per year.

In addition to the many economic, health and environmental benefits that it brings to the Commonwealth, solar energy continues to increase in popularity among Massachusetts residents. Polling consistently shows that solar is citizens’, voters’ and ratepayers’ top choice among power generation options. Recent polling in Massachusetts shows that, by margins of 3 and 4 to 1, voters support solar and support raising the net metering caps. Inaction by the Legislature not only puts the vitality and growth of the solar industry in Massachusetts at risk, but it will threaten a popular alternative energy source that has enabled consumers, businesses, municipalities, schools, public agencies and non-profits to reduce their electricity bills and take control of their energy usage.
