What’s in a Name?
You know something? In Pre-Reboot Archie, the implications behind Julian Kintobor changing his name to Ivo Robotnik takes on some very interesting dimensions when you look at the whole picture of things.
Tumblr media
One of the things that could make the Pre-Reboot Archie continuity so fascinating was that it was an unplanned hodgepodge of often conflicting personal visions of the writers, intermixed with hastily included details from the games as they came out. It created a weird, chaotic mix of things, but in a lot of ways part of the fun was trying to reconcile these disparate elements... as well as considering the way details could be re-contextualized in the long run.
Me being me, I tend to focus on ol blubber bolts, and in this case? When you step back and take in the full scope of the various details in Preboot Archie, it paints a rather fascinating picture of Julian’s mindset.
So, anyway. As You Know, Dr. Ivo Robotnik began life as Julian Kintobor, and upon conquering Mobotropolis and starting up his empire he re-christened himself “Dr. Ivo Robotnik”. Now, on its own the reason why he’d do this would seem pretty obvious- “Robotnik” better reflects who he is and what he’s about, and the second Sonic Kids special would corroborate this idea with the man himself admitting he finds Ivo Robotnik to be a more imposing name than his given one.
Tumblr media
Without directly naming certain Infamous Real Life Individuals, it has pretty good historical precedence in the real world. “Robotnik” on its own makes enough sense, but that begs the question of “Ivo”. Why THAT name?
And this is where things get interesting!
For much of the comic’s early run, details about Robotnik’s life before he became Robotnik would be extremely scarce, and things would only really be fleshed out after he died. However, issue 50 revealed an interesting little detail- Robotnik’s father was ALSO named ‘Ivo’.
Tumblr media
This would give some interesting implications behind why Julian calls himself Ivo, given that it was also his father’s name... it is also a surprisingly clever reference to the games given that Ivo was Robotnik’s given name in the games of the time and remains Eggman’s own given name (if rarely brought up).
Later, this would be retconned lightly in the “Director’s Cut” version of issue 50, in which the “Son of Ivo” because “of the House of Ivo”.
Tumblr media
This doesn’t necessarily contradict the earlier version, as often belonging to a “House” tends to simply be a fancy way of simply saying you’re a part of your father’s family... but taken in this context, it also hypothetically means that Ivo isn’t simply his father’s name, but the name of his bloodline’s founder. Its not uncommon for prominent/aristocratic families to name their children after esteemed ancestors, after all.
Eventually Robotnik would die in Endgame, while an alternate version of himself, Robo-Robotnik, would take his place and eventually upgrade to the current Eggman design of the Modern Games, to better reflect said games at the time of their debut.
Tumblr media
This sequence is one of those things that lives in my head-rent free, because its implied these things were built by the Original Robotnik, and just in general it brings up so, so many questions about the guy and his sense of self given that only one of those bodies looks better than he does while another actually looks even WORSE than how he normally does.
And those implications would become even MORE interesting once a certain game came along, a game that did something no other before had- actually exploring Eggman’s family history!
Tumblr media
The Adventure Games in general had the writers scrambling to incorporate elements from said games, and not always gracefully. And the revelations about Eggman’s family in particular would send a pretty huge monkey wrench into the works when it came to the logistic’s of Ivo’s family history in Archie.
Tumblr media
While debuting as “Professor Gerald”, his existence created even more questions regarding Robotnik’s back-up “Eggman” body that were never intended by Karl Bollers, chief among them “Why would Robotnik want to look more like his grandfather?”. In Sonic Adventure 2 Eggman would elaborate on how he admired his grandfather and scientific genius, so it might stand to reason that Julian would have felt similar growing up... this would also add a new context to him taking the surname “Robotnik”, indicating he did it purposefully to honor his grandfather. This would mean that both components of Julian’s new name were chosen from his predecessors, and that he found it perfectly acceptable to even physically resemble one of those predecessors.
Eventually Ian Flynn would come on board, and in that way of his he’d take all the odd and sometimes contradictory information about the Robotnik/Kintobor family and create a coherent whole from it.
Tumblr media
One of the bigger reveals from this was that Gerald Robotnik was, in fact, Julian’s MATERNAL grandfather and that the Robotnik name was her family name. Likewise, it would confirm that the “Ivo” in the House of Ivo was indeed the name of the bloodline’s founder, while acknowledging that the name originally belonged more recently to Robotnik’s father Ivo.
So still there is the question of “Why?”. One would think, given that Julian took his mother’s maiden name, that he did it out of similar affection and admiration the way he implicitly did for Gerald. But I’m not sure that’s really the case.
Tumblr media
While details were fleshed out, Robotnik/Eggman’s life was never given an in-depth look beyond him having a strained relationship with his older brother Colin. Otherwise, details about the relationship with the rest of his family was never elaborated upon... however, I do remember an interesting detail that Flynn revealed during a Q and A session.
Now I’m doing this by memory, but I swear that I speak true, but if I do remember right? Someone asked about Eggman’s parents, and Flynn basically said that it was likely he’d disposed of them in order to get them out of the way. Which, hey, I can see pretty easily in Archie. If that is the case though, then Julian didn’t take his father’s name out affection.
This veers into the realm of headcanon, but I like to think of it as Robotnik not taking his father’s name to honor him, but rather to honor his ANCESTOR Ivo, in essence reclaiming the name from a parent he disliked enough to kill. “Ivo Robotnik” as such comes about as a result of Julian wishing to emulate prominent members of his family he respected and admired, rather than parents he implicitly did not, and this theory is enhanced again by the “Eggman” body that is again implicitly modeled after Gerald Robotnik.
I just find it interesting given that you wouldn’t think Julian/Eggman to be the sort of guy to indulge in this kind of sentimentality... but then, for as much there is sentimentality behind the action, it also kind of speaks to the kind of contempt he might have held for his immediate family and his desire to be more like esteemed individuals of his family’s past rather than what in his view might have been a mediocre, lackluster present.
I dunno, I’m just spitballing and waxing poetic at this point. Still, taken all together? The various reveals of the comic and the way it incorporated stuff into the games paints an odd kind of depth to something that was originally a rather small, un-complicated detail when it came to Robotnik/Eggman/The Walrus.
And I find that Neat.

Julian Kintobor (Young Dr. Robotnik)
Tumblr media
Left: Julian Kintobor (age 17); casual clothes. Right: Julian Kintobor (age 19); Warlord of Acorn uniform.
My interpretation of the "young Robotnik/Eggman (late teens to early-mid 20s), before he turned evil" concept. Inspired by the Archie Comics and Tales of Sonic the Hedgehog.
Julian Kintobor was a mechanical prodigy and lab assistant to Dr. Nate Morgan from the human city of Megapolis in the United Federation. When his mentor was framed for treason by GUN after refusing to build weapons of mass destruction to use against the Mobians, he fled the city and wound up in the Kingdom of Acorn; where was found by Julius "Jules" Hedgehog and his older brother, Sir Charles, aka Uncle Chuck, and taken to Mobotropolis. After convincing King Frederick that he meant no harm and being reunited with Dr. Morgan, Julian became one of the kingdom's royal scientists.
When the Great War broke out, Julian's older brother, General Colin Kintobor, led an attack on Mobotropolis. Refusing to let his new home be destroyed, Julian used his knowledge to improve Acorn's arsenal and form battle plans to defend the city. After a month long siege, they drove Colin and his forces back.
For his bravery and cunning, Julian was appointed Warlord of Acorn, becoming the first human to hold the title, as well as the youngest at the age of 19. He would hold the office until the end of Great War over 10 years later, eventually becoming an independent researcher.
Julian's appearance is partly modeled after Chris Thorndyke, while his Warlord uniform is inspired by Robotnik’s modern Sonic and movie designs.
All characters are owned by Sega, Archie, IDW, Paramount, Fleetway, and Yuji Naka. Please support the official release and all official Sonic materials.

Prologue
(Chapter Index)
(Next)
A display of technological marvel, yet still rotten in more ways than not.
With the ever-increasing environmental degradation, incessant crime, and the overcrowded masses living in despair, many would turn up their nose to such a dystopia.
But to Scourge the Hedgehog, this was home. Once his dad died, this was all he had when he was 11. Although that felt like a lifetime ago, the different sights made him recall his survival instincts from those days. For instance, every shop they passed reminded Scourge of his various strategies when it came to getting away with shoplifting.
He still knew this city like the back of his hand; down to the safest places to sleep and the most rewarding places to dumpster dive. Above all, he knew he was indeed home.
It had been about a day since he and his crew had broken out of Zone Jail. In comparison, this dump was paradise; especially since this is where they’d likely find their base of operations for their various plans.
Given the circumstances, it would be difficult to believe that Scourge used to be the king of this planet. After a few years on the streets, he and his former gang, the Suppression Squad, decided they wanted more than just survival.
They wanted to rise above the rest.
Of course, the best way to do so was to overthrow the king. Many would find such a task to be overly ambitious and even impossible without an army of a thousand soldiers. Luckily, with Princess Alicia on their side, they were able to successfully usurp King Maxx and imprison him in the Zone of Silence.
From that point onwards, Scourge’s rule of Moebius was a rather complicated matter.
On one hand, there was plenty of fun in things such as raising the taxes astronomically, severely punishing those who didn’t pay said taxes, cutting all public funding to keep their world even remotely clean, and other practices that sucked the life out of this world.
However, after struggling to overthrow their holier-than-thou rival, Dr. Julian Kintobor, Scourge himself was overthrown by one of the impatient members of the Suppression Squad named Jeffrey St. Croix.
After an incident on Mobius Prime involving the Master Emerald, his speed and strength tested new limits, and he regained rule of his gang and planet.
If the Suppression Squad didn’t hate him so much for allegedly treating them like shit, he wouldn’t have been betrayed by them with the help of his enemy, Sonic of Mobius Prime. Thanks to them, Sonic defeated him and he was imprisoned in the No Zone for his crimes across the multiverse.
As aforementioned, Zone Jail was no summer camp. With his powers stripped and quills shaved down, he was defenseless at the bottom of the food chain as he was at the epicenter of endless beatings. By dumb luck, his girlfriend, Fiona had gotten herself and a new gang of their own, the Destructix, thrown in Zone Jail. One hop, skip, and prison riot later, they were free and ready to take back what was lost.
More importantly, to take an eye for an eye.
(Stay tuned. Lot more where that came from ;D)

Are the ArchieSonic comics actually an 80's/90's syndicated cartoon? Episode 53: Henchman joins heroes for one time only
Welcome back to my look at the ArchieSonic comic series, and how it shared a lot of the same story tropes as a typical ‘80s or ‘90s syndicated cartoon! In most cartoons the contrast between the heroes and the main villain is pretty black and white. Good is good, bad is bad, and never shall they be able to find common ground. But what about the lesser villains? The henchmen, the mooks, the hired help? Sometimes those guys are portrayed in shades of grey instead…
Episode 53: Henchman joins heroes for one time only
There could be any number of reasons a henchman might temporarily team up with the good guys. They could be a victim of memory loss or brainwashing, they might have had a disagreement with their boss that drove them into the arms of the heroes before they decide to go back to being a bad guy, they might need the heroes’ help to defeat an even bigger bad that’s usurped their boss, or they might join up with the heroes while claiming to have been reformed but secretly planning to stab them in the back.
So what about in ArchieSonic? The best example we have here is a scheming little weasel of a man (not literally) named Colin Kintobor Jr, but who is better known as Snively Robotnik.
Tumblr media
Hoo boy, now here’s a guy whose loyalties seemed to change at the drop of a hat in ArchieSonic. Let’s take a look at this guy’s history, shall we?
During the Great War Snively came to Mobotropolis to join his Uncle Julian, supposedly in service of King Acorn. But they were actually plotting a coup and successfully took over the Kingdom, exiling the King to the Zone of Silence and transforming most of the populace into robotic slaves.
Tumblr media
Snively remained in the service of the newly rechristened Dr. Robotnik afterwards as his right hand man, although that role was often seen being fulfilled by the badnik Crabmeat in the early issues before Snively was introduced (and sometimes even afterwards). As the years went by Snively started to become more disillusioned and less trusting of his uncle, as Robotnik suffered defeat after defeat at the hands of the Freedom Fighters and started growing more abusive towards Snively. Snively longed to take control of Robotnik’s empire and prove that he could do better, and took full opportunity to try and do so in Sonic #30 when Robotnik was accidentally trapped in another dimension called the Void.
Tumblr media
Robotnik soon returned though and the status quo returned to normal (aside from Uncle Chuck having regained his free will and joined forces with the Freedom Fighters). Snively started scheming about how to once again remove his uncle from power and was finally given the chance in Sonic #50 when Robotnik tried to use his superweapon, the Ultimate Annihilator.
Tumblr media
The device was programmed to erase Knothole Village from existence, but Snively sabotaged it so that it instead fired on Robotnik himself. Snively didn’t have long to enjoy his self-promotion to CEO of All Things Evil though, as he was captured just a few days later when the Freedom Fighters came a-knocking at the front door.
Tumblr media
Snively was imprisoned in the Devil’s Gulag, which led to the stuff I mentioned in one of the recent previous episodes. First there was the mysteriously engineered prison breakout, after which the other escapees put Snively in charge as they believed he was one who had freed them. Following that came the kidnapping of Nate Morgan, and Snively’s supposed death from a giant squid explosion when Nate’s rescue team barged in to save the day. However what actually happened was that at the last possible second he was teleported away and ended up in the clutches of none other than his supposed murder victim.
Tumblr media
Maybe he would have been better off with the squid.
So, here’s the bit where I get to the topic of the day. In Sonic #73 the Freedom Fighters finally figured out someone was using a series of satellites to wreak havoc on the planet - causing meteor showers, earthquakes, prison breaks, the re-enslavement of all the formerly freed Robians, fun stuff like that - and went into orbit to investigate. This led to them discovering that the satellites had now combined to form a large space station, run by none other than the very much not-dead Dr. Robotnik. Except surprise, it was a trick!
Tumblr media
After taking an accidental acid bath and melting off his fake skin, the big bad revealed himself to actually be Robo-Robotnik, the alternate dimensional counterpart of Robotnik who had tried to rule over all of reality with the Giant Borg. The Freedom Fighters were captured in an electric prison forcefield, but to their surprise Snively released them.
Tumblr media
He explained that he needed their help to escape, as Robo-Robotnik intended to roboticise him too. The Freedom Fighters weren’t exactly keen on teaming up with Snively, but they let him escape with them before blowing Robotnik’s space station up and heading back to the surface. Once back on the ground, Snively pointed out that their plan to evacuate back to Knothole Village was doomed to failure, as Robo-Robotnik would have escaped the explosion by downloading his memory into a new body back in Robotropolis (giving birth to his modern Eggman design) and would have a file telling him Knothole’s exact location.
Tumblr media
In exchange for keeping him safe from Robotnik’s shadowbots, Snively reluctantly agreed to join Sally and Sonic to sabotage Robotnik’s database and infect him with a virus (literally).
Tumblr media
After that Snively disappeared for awhile, going out on his own and not reappearing until after the Sonic Adventure arc. Robotnik’s army recaptured Snively in Sonic #94, and he agreed to go back to working for Robotnik when he was offered the chance to deal with his previously unmentioned daddy issues.
Tumblr media
Having gotten that out of his system - and again, I mean that literally, as Snively willingly let himself be robotocised until the Bem intervened and deroboticised him - Snively stayed in his uncle’s employ until the Xorda invasion of the planet in Sonic #124, during which he mysteriously vanished. For awhile it was believed that Snively had been roboticised again, but this turned out to just be a duplicate that Eggman built for… some reason?
Tumblr media
He got bored of it pretty quickly though and had the “Silver Snively” project scrapped. The real Snively resurfaced in Sonic #152 though, when Sonic and his “Angels” (ew) were investigating a city made of nanites that had popped up overnight and was rapidly spreading across the land.
Tumblr media
Snively had developed some EMP detonators to halt the nanites, and after he explained himself to Sonic he worked with them to try and end the threat. Surprisingly, after this incident he actually joined the Knothole “Brain Trust” and continued his work on nanite experiments with them for a time.
Tumblr media
But he soon wondered what he was doing there and felt that it really didn’t suit him that well. So it was no surprise that when Eggman came sniffing around Knothole and offered Snively his old job back that he accepted the offer.
Tumblr media
But what was surprising was that this opportunistic, back-stabbing, power-hungry little man actually did have a moment of hesitation, because he was concerned for the well-being of his “step”sister Hope, who had been living in Knothole as a refugee ever since Eggman had roboticised her father and grandmother.
Tumblr media
Snively actually caring about anyone other than himself was something that hadn’t really been seen in the series before, but here he was trying to convince her to leave Knothole so that she didn’t get wiped out with everyone else when Eggman attacked, although of course he didn’t tell her that was the reason. After ensuring Hope’s survival Snively returned to the Eggman Empire, and this time he got a spiffy new uniform to go along with his new position.
Tumblr media
Snively stayed on the side of evil all the way through the rest of the pre-reboot era of the series, and ended up paying the price for that when he tried to break from the Eggman Empire and begin his own evil regime.
Tumblr media
Following the reboot Snively eventually showed up again, now sporting a beard (possibly to prove he could at least grow hair on his face? LOL) and working as a scientist for GUN.
Tumblr media
Commander Tower was rightfully suspicious of his motives, as Snively and Eggman had both previously worked for GUN as a step to creating the Eggman Empire and overthrowing King Acorn while trying to prevoke a war between the Kingdom of Acorn and the United Federation. In this timeline Snively left Dr. Eggman’s service much earlier than in pre-reboot. In fact, he returned to GUN right after the events of Sonic and Knuckles, claiming he’d been forced into working for Eggman and that he had in fact been spying on him the entire time and looking for an opportunity to escape.
Tumblr media
Commander Tower let him come back to work for them, expecting that he was planning something shifty and that he would try to stab them in the back, but hoping to catch him in the act. Sure enough, Snively did have some sort of evil plan in the works.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately the series was cancelled before we got to see exactly what he had cooking.
I would also like to give a brief shoutout to Bean and Bark for this segment. It’s true that they weren’t part of the Eggman Empire, but they did take on jobs for Eggy as mercenaries for hire - in fact, they were working for him for almost the entirety of the post-reboot series. But there were a couple of times where they briefly joined forces with the heroes too. In Sonic #187 Mammoth Mogul put out a bounty on Sonic, and pretty much every scruffy ne'er do well Sonic had ever fought joined forces to try and take him out.
Tumblr media
During this battle Sally offered Bean and Bark double whatever they were being paid to take out Sonic if they helped her fight back against the other mercenaries instead. They quickly agreed and started attacking their former allies, but when the mercs managed to capture Sonic Bean and Bark decided to cut their losses and quickly switched sides again, figuring they might as well get paid by someone. Bean and Bark later also briefly joined forces with Blaze, Marine, Amy and Cream in the Sol dimension to take on the dreaded Captain Metal. Having been sent to the Sol dimension during the second Genesis wave that came with the comics’ reboot, Bean and Bark had initially joined forces with Captain Metal.
Tumblr media
But after they stole Captain Metal’s Sol Emerald they came into conflict with both his pirate crew and that of Captain Whisker, and so they ended up working with Blaze’s team against their common enemies.
Tumblr media
Are there any other instances of henchmen briefly joining forces with the good guys in ArchieSonic that I missed? Let me know in the comments! Next time I’ll be looking at - what is it again? Let me see here… “Random child rescues hero. The episode’s all about him now.” Hmmm, that’s another tricky one. I’ll have to think hard on that one and see what I can come up with.

War of the Eggs
Basically, what if the Robotnik clan started a kingdom of alchemists and had a war over the throne like the War of the Roses and Tudor Era? Different Kingdoms and villages will come into play, but the Robotniks will be the focus. I’ll use different wikis for my lore.
The Badnik siblings are a mix of energy vampires and homunculi.
They also resemble animals/organic life this time around.
Picking and choosing what lore I use.
Start: Gerald Robotnik and Jennifer Robotnik (originally of the Vasquez line)
Second Generation: Geraldo Robotnik (wed to Meredith of the Sanders line), Bertha Kintobor (married to Lord Ivo Kintobor I), and Shadow Robotnik (originally made to help Maria, no one knows about The Deal)
Third Generation: Maria Robotnik (daughter of Geraldo and Meredith), Colin Kintober I (elder son of Ivo I and Bertha, wed to Miriam Tronel and later Angela Hopkins), Ivo “Julian” Robotnik II (younger son of Ivo I and Bertha)
Fourth Generation: Colin “Snively” Kintober II (son of Colin I and Miriam (deceased), disowned), Hope Kintobor (daughter of Angela and Turner Lunith (deceased), stepdaughter of Colin I), Scratch and Grounder Robotnik (first sons of Ivo II, mysteriously disappeared after the creation of Caseo), Caseo (mysteriously disappeared after the creation of Cobalt), Cobalt Robotnik (aka Metal Sonic, current eldest son, deposed as Heir Prime after attempting to over throw Ivo II), Belle Tinkerer (unknown), Sage Robotnik (current Heir Prime)
Other Eggman Creations not listed aren’t considered family.

Boy, it's been a while since I jawed about Robotnik, hasn't it? Well, thanks to Dune 2's interpretation of the Harkonnens and their homeworld Giedi Prime, I've developed an interpretation for why Robotnik was the way he is! So hey, might as well jaw about it.
So, as we know, the closest we ever get to a motive for bolt boy (aside from him being an asshole control freak) is that he is driven by a desire to create a 'perfect, ordered' world...
Tumblr media
... and it's pretty clear that the end game for this vision of the world would basically be a lifeless wasteland of robots and machines, all controlled by him. It's a pretty insane goal, and you have to wonder how he ever developed such a vision of 'perfection' to begin with.
Well, I might have an idea, and it begins in Robotnik's home country of Overland. One detail we got about Overland was that it was heavily polluted, and running short on resources before the Great War broke out...
Tumblr media
Like I said, I got this idea after watching Dune 2, and in Dune in general the Harkonnen homeworld of Giedi Prime is depicted as an over-industrialized, heavily polluted hellscape, and the films take it a step further by suggesting that, in part, the Harkonnen's over the top viciousness/insanity is influenced by generations worth of exposure to nonstop pollution.
So, that got me thinking about Robotnik. Predictable, I know, but then Vladimir Harkonnen IS one of the Lost Robotniks, heh.
Tumblr media
So, what does this have to do with Robotnik?
Picture, if you will, that pollution in Overland was bad. Really, really bad. Bad enough that it causes widespread health issues, even going so far as to cause physical and mental defects. Robotnik is born Julian Kintobor and grows up with this, and despite being one of the upper class, his family is not untouched by it- he witnesses his peers succumb to it to various degrees, watch as bodies and minds break down or are left twisted by chemical exposure. He may have had friends who died young or were left ravaged. Heck, he and his brother might not have been the only Kintobors of their generation, just the only ones that survived.
Growing up, Julian sees all this and is terrified of the same happening to him. Eventually though this fear twists his mind something fierce, and soon he grows to not fear the rampant pollution for ruining so many Overlanders, but instead learns to despise the frailty of flesh that shatters so easily to toxins and chemicals. From there it extends to a hatred of organic life and sentient beings, who would willingly do this to themselves. He begins to see machines as superior to all-to-easily broken Mobians and Overlanders. By the time he's an adult he now has visions of a 'perfect' world free of organic weakness and organic chaos, and his view of the sub-par nature of flesh is only strengthened with the birth of his nephew Snively, clearly another victim of the warping effects of the pollution.
This also might explain why Robotnik wantonly pollutes as he does.
Tumblr media
He does so as an expression of his hatred for the frailties of the flesh, seeking to create a world where organic life cannot thrive. Where weakness cannot thrive. And, in a sense, to demonstrate his mastery over the very thing that once terrified him so. He no longer fears the pollution, but is now lord of it, reveling in it and how it expresses his power and control over the world.
Or something like that. I'm pathologizing a cartoon villain from the 90s, cut me some slack XD
