I’ve poked around a little in Tumblr etc to see what people say about Café Minamdang, and it seems like people either really enjoy it or they really hate it. I can see why – while it occasionally gets serious, it’s mostly goofy af. Headdesk-inducing goofiness, even.

I just finished ep 6, and I actually love it. I started watching it specifically because people said it was ridiculous and funny, and I needed something like that to off-set the heavier stuff I’m also watching (Beyond Evil, Bloodhounds, Flower of Evil).

I love me some angsty and traumatized MLs so the fact that Nam Han Jun has not been a happy-go-lucky lunatic all his life is a bonus, mainly because so far they haven’t given up the goofiness to go all in on the angst.

Actually, the fact that he hasn’t always been a con-man, and that he’s been running his shaman con from the beginning with the mindset of someone whose career was always meant to help people, makes me like the show more. Han Jun has let his inner court jester off the leash, but he’s still a good guy underneath it all.

I love the dynamic between the ML and the FL so far. I’m hand-waving the age/timeline stuff and just going with what the show tells me to think about that rather than analyzing it too hard, so I think her early crush on him was cute.

Usually the trope of the cop who assumes they know who did it and refuses to be objective in the slightest really frustrates me, but it works here somehow? I think because there really does appear to be no reason to doubt the so-called evidence until Han Jun makes a stink about it. Jae-hui has started to question things, now that she’s being called out on her rigidity, which makes a huge difference.

I think my favorite element so far is how much Han Jun really doesn’t give a fuck if law enforcement will believe him, or support him, or even listen to him. I’m guessing he gave up on that sometime during his incarceration. He’s perfectly aware of how easily the law can be manipulated to sacrifice the innocent, because he’s been the sacrificial innocent, and he has no faith left.

He knows he’s right, and he’s going to investigate what he wants to investigate, and Jae-Hui and her cohort can either listen to him or they can continue to focus on what they think is right; he doesn’t care either way.

It’s kind of refreshing. Usually, there’s some level of desperation on the hero’s part to be understood and believed by the people in power. They either try to hide what they’re doing because they’re afraid of being misunderstood, or they’re aggressively trying to get people to believe them.

Han Jun doesn’t do that. He doesn’t agonize over it, either; he just does his thing.

It helps that he has people on his side, even if none of them are particularly powerful. Han Jun, Hye Jun, Su Cheol and Na Dan are such a great little ridiculous, pure, mutually supportive family.

Speaking of actual family, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more realistic brother-sister relationship. Han Jun and Hye Jun have such a great love-aggravate-support-mock dynamic.

I have to admit that I keep waiting to find out that Su Cheol is the bad guy. I couldn’t figure out why until I realized that the other show I’ve seen that actor in is Lovers of the Red Sky, in which he played the villain. I don’t *want* Han Jun to be betrayed by his friend, though, so I will be very happy if he doesn’t turn out to be evil.

Oh, side note: I kind of love that while Han Jun started out being the BAMF martial artist who taught Jae-Hui, he’s now barely able to hold his own in a fight while she’s Avengers-level kick-ass. It feels like a skill he let lapse because it maybe required a level of...I don’t know, dedication to heroism? That he no longer feels. Whereas Jae-Hui has improved because she’s driven to be The Best Cop Ever after the tragedy of her brother’s death and the fact that his killer got away.

But yes. 100% enjoying this show.

Bad and Crazy – Episode 11 recap/musings

Where we left off: Ju Hyeok sees Su Yeol out after his appointment (during which he dropped the bombshell of having a split personality). It's pleasantries and a promise to resume treatment in subsequent sessions but, as Su Yeol exits the building, he recalls what Jeong Hun told him: that Ju Hyeok is the gaslighting mastermind, and even coerced Young Joo into stabbing him to misdirect the investigation.

We get a longer scene of this, showing just how cruelly manipulative and threatening Ju Hyeok's words were. In short: He's a fucking monster.

Outside, Su Yeol looks back at Ju Hyeok, and the two exchange friendly smiles [far from Su Yeol's long glare from the end of Ep10 that was for dramatic effect]. He remarks to himself that Yun Ho hasn't changed, either.

K manifests, but he's got concerns:

K: Su Yeol... Are you sure you can do this?

Su Yeol: I have you.

K: [grins] You bet! Now you know. I'm a hero who only exists for you.

Oh, he's like a puppy. It's Su Yeol's turn to feel cautious, though, as he notes that they can't arrest the therapist on Jeong Hun's statement alone. They need proof. K asks how.

Su Yeol: I'll let him drag me into misery.

Boss Yong, disguised in a National Forensic Service lab coat, sends Andrei off via cremation (but not before Tasering an interrupting doctor).

In the car, Su Yeol is training K to identify Ju Hyeok as Sin Ju Hyeok, not as Jeong Yun Ho. But it's proving difficult, as K's murderpuppy energy is solely fixated on killing him regardless of who he is. Su Yeol reminds K who they're up against: someone who went to great lengths just to prove that K exists, so puppy needs to focus.

Su Yeol says they have to work on figuring out Ju Hyeok's game plan but, at the same time, they can't let him know that they know he's Yun Ho. K: "I can perform when it counts. I'm good at acting, you know." [Why did that sound so dirty?] Su Yeol tests this by asking K who it is, but K just seethes that it's Yun Ho. Pfft.

At therapy [Wait – Su Yeol is wearing the same clothes as he did at the last appointment!], Ju Hyeok asks Su Yeol about the first time he ever saw K. Su Yeol tells the truth: It was when he saw Yun Ho kill his father, but he ran away without knowing that K even existed at that point.

Ju Hyeok acknowledges that K came into being to free Su Yeol from the trauma that Yun Ho caused, and asks if K is present. He is, and is about to throw hands, but Su Yeol calms him. Ju Hyeok asks to speak to K alone.

But there's little talking at first, as an impatient K tells Ju Hyeok to get on with it. Finally, the therapist talks:

Ju Hyeok: [smiles] It's been a while.

[K looks puzzled.]

Ju Hyeok: You don't remember me? [takes off his glasses like he's Clark Kent] I'm Yun Ho.

K: What?

Ju Hyeok: Come to think of it, we are very similar: We were both trying to protect Jae Hui, right?

K: You jerk...

[Ju Hyeok moves to sit right next to K.]

Ju Hyeok: You wanted to kill Jae Hui's father as much as I did. Am I wrong?

K: Shut your mouth.

Ju Hyeok: You thought that, without that scumbag of a father, Jae Hui would have been free. You remember that, right?

K erupts at this, but is held back by Su Yeol, who asks Ju Hyeok what he's doing. The therapist tells him he was just role-playing as Jun Ho to see how K would react, since he thinks that's key in treating his trauma. Ju Hyeok has concerns about K's volatility; Su Yeol says he can control him.

But the therapist plants another horrible seed of doubt:

Ju Hyeok: But, Mr Ryu... Did you check if your father was dead before you ran away that night?

Su Yeol: Pardon?

Ju Hyeok: You left your father passed out on the floor. You ran away, leaving only K and Jeong Yun Ho. If K is this violent, can you be sure Jeong Yun Ho killed your father? Not K?

K is so enraged by this he grabs Ju Hyeok's collar as Su Yeol desperately pulls him back. Luckily, the altercation goes no further.

On the way out, Su Yeol reminds K that Ju Hyeok was trying to gaslight him into taking the fall for his father's murder. But K is fed up and proposes that they just kill him since he already knows everything. The two argue over this, but Su Yeol can't stay mad at K's puppy eyes, and gently nudges him that he shouldn't let Ju Hyeok provoke him like this. K worries about it being caught on film, and that's when Su Yeol has a thought: There might be evidence of gaslighting in Ju Hyeok's recorded therapy sessions.

Cut to: sheer ridiculousness as one ajeossi and one oppa-at-best sneak into the shelter at night dressed in school uniforms. K is energised by how well he can pull off the disguise, and feels compelled to go "reform" some delinquents. Su Yeol works his way through a comically large set of keys.

K turns his nose up at Ju Hyeok's collection of community awards ["He got these based on lies. That liar!" Pfft.] while Su Yeol rifles through drawers. The pair hides behind the couch as two actual schoolboys sneak in to try to steal back a box of (what they think might be) their confiscated cigarettes, but K is aggrieved by this and blows their cover to rumble them.

K orders the kids to put the box back, but the boys laugh at them, saying to Su Yeol that he clearly shouldn't smoke since he looks "like a dinosaur". HA. K has the same reaction I did, but Su Yeol buys the box off of them.

Now alone, K and Su Yeol open the box to find a ton of therapy records.

At a station briefing, the Scooby gang reviews a tape in which Ju Hyeok strongly implies that Jeong Hun would be better off if his brother were dead. It's clear to everyone what he was doing. But that alone, despite his suggestive wording, still isn't enough to pin everything on him. Su Yeol asks everyone to look into any patients with a murder or suicide connection. Hui Gyeom notes that it'll help their case if they can prove Ju Hyeok's use of drugs and his murder of Andrei. Su Yeol suggests they find Yong.

Ju Hyeok reviews Su Yeol's session, wondering if he recognises him yet.

Bok Jun receives a letter from Yun Ho, and starts to panic.

Su Yeol visits the forensic centre doctor who got Tasered by Yong, and confirms it was her who absconded with Andrei's body. Luckily they'd already done the autopsy: He was injected with a lethal dose of narcotics, but was also stabbed to death. The prints on the knife match that of the body in front of them: the painter, but the knife that killed the painter still hasn't been found. Su Yeol confirms that this means at least three people were at the scene: Andrei, the painter, and whoever stabbed the painter.

On the phone, Hui Gyeom tells Su Yeol that Yong roasted Andrei via bribing a pet cremation place. Su Yeol worries she's already made off with the ashes, but Hui Gyeom is convinced that Yong will stay to at least exact her revenge. Su Yeol gets a call from Baby Prosecutor/Attorney Nam.

Su Yeol rushes to Bok Jun's barbershop and asks why he decided against filing for a retrial. When Bok Jun doesn't respond, Su Yeol sees why: He's unconscious from an attempted overdose. Su Yeol phones for help and performs CPR, stopping briefly to notice Yun Ho's letter, which urged Bok Jun to take his own life.

Later, Su Yeol visits Bok Jun, recovering from a thankfully successful gastric lavage [stomach 'pumping'/forced gastric emptying]. Bok Jun asks why he saved him since the now-expired statute of limitations for his case means that Yun Ho won't ever be punished. Su Yeol counters with a admirably surprising admission:

Su Yeol: If I told you that I was one of Jeong Yun Ho's victims, too, would you believe me?

[beat; Bok Jun turns his head to look at Su Yeol.]

Su Yeol: You know you'd never do such a thing, but you keep getting a feeling that you might have done something horrific. You feel crazy because you can't stop suspecting yourself. I know that feeling very well. Even now, I feel overwhelmed and anxious from time to time.

Bok Jun: Then... You must understand how I feel now. I want to let it all go and rest.

Su Yeol gently prods that Bok Jun can run away whenever he wants to, but that this could be their last chance to catch Yun Ho for his other crimes and officially clear Bok Jun's name.

Su Yeol pays an evening visit to Ju Hyeok's office and shows him Bok Jun's letter, filling him in on the man's false murder conviction. Ju Hyeok mentions that day's suicide attempt, and Su Yeol's already finding it sus that Ju Hyeok's already gotten wind of it. Ju Hyeok pegs Yun Ho as a stickler for plans. Su Yeol infers that that's why he goaded Bok Jun to kill himself, and thinks he'll probably in the same boat:

Su Yeol: He'll do the same thing to me, right? To lead me in the direction that he wants.

Ju Hyeok: But I am sure that you can overcome it. As you have, all this time.

Su Yeol excuses himself to take his leave. Ju Hyeok tells him that he thinks "someone" broke into his office and stole some files, but that he's not worried. Ju Hyeok all but outs himself: "They can't do anything with that alone, anyway." Su Yeol keeps the pretense going:

Su Yeol: Mr Sin, about Jeong Yun Ho... What do you think he wants from me? Why did he want to know about K? And when will this game end?

Ju Hyeok: [feigns distance] Will it ever end?

[beat]

Ju Hyeok: It's so interesting. Everything is starting again.

Su Yeol: You think so? [pause] But, you know, I'm getting a little tired of this game. I must end it now.

That night, Su Yeol pulls into his garage and opens his door to get out when Yong slips in like a fucking ninja and pins him to his seat in a strangling move. With one hand garrotting him, she uses the other to hold up a recording of Andrei's call describing "the cop that caught Kim Gye Sik". Ju Hyeok's voice is on there, but she doesn't know who he is, and asks him who it is. He asks her where she got the recording but she tightens the wire until it slips, upon which he starts to fight back and the two brawl.

Outside, Dong Yeol approaches and, upon spotting Su Yeol and a woman wrestling in the car amid loud grunts, assumes his brother is having sex. He's mortified, but stands guard [!] at what he thinks is probably out of earshot. The fight continues until Yong gets pushed out of the car, whereupon she grabs Dong Yeol, who is both confused and terrified: "Su Yeol, I don't know what you did to her, but apologise to her now." Pfft.

Su Yeol pleads with her to let him go but Yong demands Su Yeol tell him what he knows. Dong Yeol suddenly pretends not to know Su Yeol [ha]. Yong's tone becomes slightly more frantic. Su Yeol calmly asks for the phone so he can catch them, but Yong screams for a name. Su Yeol draws his gun, at which Yong throws Dong Yeol to his brother and legs it.

But Su Yeol catches up to her and, keeping her at gunpoint, tells her that, since this case is personal to them both, they should work together:

Su Yeol: You held a funeral for him despite the risk of getting caught, which tells me that you two were very close. And you must desperately want to avenge his death.

Yong: Shut your mouth.

Su Yeol: But, you see, you can't find that man by yourself. I'm not sure if you know this, but that jerk is after me, and I want to catch him as much as you do.

[pause]

Yong: As much as I do?

[beat]

Yong: What, then? Are you willing to risk your life?

Su Yeol lowers his gun and tells her that, if she cooperates, he'll put his life on the line to catch who they're both after.

Next day at the station, Hui Gyeom questions Yong (whose turn it is to wear the cuffs this time), confirming that Andrei died while trying to find who gave Young Joo The Eye. Yong asks if she'll see Andrei's killer in court. Hui Gyeom says that, as the main witness, she will.

Meanwhile, Bong Pil expresses doubt over Yong's witness credibility. Su Yeol counters that he should at least trust him about Ju Hyeok. Bong Pil says that the already-outlandish story still doesn't have proper evidence. Su Yeol is aghast:

Su Yeol: Hyung...!

Bong Pil: Hey, do you realise how big this is? That therapist even had a contract with our HQ. Whenever we caught a juvenile offender, we went to him for advice and to get his statement. After all that, if things go south, even the Commissioner–

Su Yeol: So that's it? Is that why you won't let me arrest Sin Ju Hyeok?

Bong Pil: [calmly, as if talking to a mildly misbehaving cat] How dare you raise your voice at me..?

Su Yeol: He's hurting kids. He's killing them! And you'll sit back and do nothing?

Bong Pil: I never said we should sit back and do nothing! Catch him at once! And gather more evidence as quickly as possible!

[pause]

Su Yeol: [sighs; now calm] Why did you have to say that in such a roundabout way?

Bong Pil: [still worked-up] What do you take me for? Put in a request for a warrant at once!

Su Yeol: [sweetly] I knew I could count on you, our next commissioner!

He choofs off, leaving Bong Pil to ponder that very possibility.

Meanwhile, Dong Yeol walks Mama Ryu to an appointment. Alone, she thanks the doctor for making the time to see her. But the camera pans up to reveal that... it's Ju Hyeok. "Oh, please," he says, chillingly. "It's my job."

Back at the station, Su Yeol tells the team they got the warrant, and the gang practically sprints out the door. But Su Yeol gets a cryptic, worrying call from Bok Jun.

He rushes to meet him at an abandoned warehouse to find out what's wrong. Bok Jun looks like his spirit has already left him, but the body is still talking:

Bok Jun: I will die with Jeong Yun Ho. I've finally figured out who he is, so it's unfair if I must die alone.

He pulls out a knife and asks Su Yeol, through a dead stare, why he asked him to clear his name. Su Yeol says he doesn't understand what's happening, but pleads with him to drop the knife and just talk. But Bok Jun is gone: He's convinced Su Yeol is Yun Ho, and lunges at him. Su Yeol disarms him but Bok Jun starts throttling him, and tells Su Yeol just how miserable Yun Ho has made his life, including his multiple attempts to end his own life. He mentions his "therapist" and Su Yeol, through gasps, pieces it together as Ju Hyeok arrives.

Su Yeol tries to tell Bok Jun that Ju Hyeok is Yun Ho, but he won't – he can't – listen. Upon seeing Ju Hyeok, Bok Jun rushes to greet him, but Ju Hyeok fatally stabs Bok Jun.

An enraged Su Yeol manifests K, who pins Ju Hyeok to the ground with repeated punches. Ju Hyeok laughs at this, wondering if K has come out, or Jae Hui, and an incensed K grabs the fallen knife. But Su Yeol stops him, saying that this is exactly what Ju Hyeok wants. The therapist holds up his hands for arrest, as Su Yeol, addressing him as Yun Ho, tells him he's finished.

On the other side of the interrogation room glass, Bong Pil asks Hui Gyeom if they have hard evidence that Ju Hyeok committed murder. Hui Gyeom is confident they'll get a confession, but Bong Pil's already worried about circling reporters.

In the room itself, Su Yeol runs through the list of reasons why Ju Hyeok's going to hell: gaslighting his patients to commit crimes, distributing illicit drugs, patricide, and the murder of Bok Jun:

Ju Hyeok: Jeong Yun Ho is the culprit behind all those crimes, correct?

Su Yeol: Yes. And you are Jeong Yun Ho. I know that I was the one you were after. Why did you kill Seong Bok Jun?

Ju Hyeok: I wonder, too. Why did Jeong Yun Ho do that?

[Su Yeol's eyes narrow.]

Ju Hyeok: The victim of Jeong Yun Ho's first murder was his father. He probably had a revelation after killing his father: "Oh, it was actually nothing"; "When you see trash, you get rid of it. It improves the quality of your life. Why did it take me so long to realise this?" But, then... He saw that so many people around him were still suffering because they did not know what he had just discovered. So he thought, "I can help them out of their misery by helping them see this."

[pause]

Su Yeol: And that's why you incited the kids to commit murder?

Ju Hyeok: Jeong Yun Ho's job probably aggravated the situation by providing him with plenty of stimuli because it exposed him to lots of abused children.

Su Yeol: Is that an excuse?

Ju Hyeok: But the thing is, Mr Ryu... Does Jeong Yun Ho really exist?

Su Yeol: [in disbelief] Yesterday, you told Seong Bok Jun that I was Jeong Yun Ho. Now you're trying to insist that he doesn't exist?

Ju Hyeok: No, I know that he appeared again. But the problem is, he disappeared 22 years ago. So why is he back? Why now? Right after K reappeared, also after 22 years.

[beat; Su Yeol is unnerved; Hui Gyeom is unsettled.]

Ju Hyeok: You said all the victims had links to Jeong Yun Ho, but there's one more person, the common link amongst all of these cases: You, Ryu Su Yeol. No-one has really met Jeong Yun Ho... Except for you.

Su Yeol: [losing grip] What are you trying to pull here?

Ju Hyeok: The stimuli you experienced while working as a cop must have reactivated your trauma, and your other self woke up again.

Su Yeol: Hey, Sin Ju Hyeok...

Ju Hyeok: You still don't get it? K is Jeong Yun Ho, the person you were after, your alter ego. The person who killed Seong Bok Jun right before my eyes yesterday... was you, Mr Ryu.

And it's here that Su Yeol loses it. He grabs Ju Hyeok by the collar, but Ju Hyeok tells him he can't run from the truth anymore.

In the stairwell, a rightfully furious Hui Gyeom demands an explanation. After some hesitation, Su Yeol admits that K is his alter ego, and the reason why he's been acting out of character lately. Hui Gyeom can't believe what she's hearing. Su Yeol begs her not to let Ju Hyeok blame K, but Hui Gyeom is trying to make sense of this:

Hui Gyeom: We came this far because we trusted you. And you were the only one at the scene yesterday. If things go south...

Su Yeol: Hui Gyeom, please trust me.

Hui Gyeom: Then you should have earned my trust!

She tells him he should have come clean before they all got into this mess and warns him to stay off the case. A short distance away, she has a small breakdown, but catches herself.

Su Yeol visits Doctor Heart Mender's office, only to find it in shambles. Jae Seon's v/o tells us that he fled after learning he was under investigation for illegal gambling and committing a medical industry violation. A frustrated Su Yeol takes his anger out on the office's debris.

At home, Dong Yeol finds his mother in her room, in a daze. She tells him she had a dream about the day they met Su Yeol, but she's too horrified to continue. Dong Yeol notes that she's "been dreaming a lot" lately.

In the interrogation room, Ju Hyeok recalls "returning" Mama Ryu's "younger son's stuff" to her, which she'd brought to her appointment with him "by mistake". A flashback shows Mama Ryu looking into a bag, disturbed, and Ju Hyeok promising not to tell anyone. He then recalls visiting Jeong Hun at the juvenile centre, telling him he "understands" everything and that he's the "only one" who will "save" him.

Su Yeol gazes out the window as Jae Seon is infuriated at Yong's testimony being dismissed. Su Yeol recalls moments ago: In his office, Bong Pil advises Su Yeol to work on clearing his name before rumours start, because a search warrant was authorised for his house. He drops another bomb: They have to let Ju Hyeok go, because they can't prove he was involved. Su Yeol can't believe this:

Su Yeol: I told you that I saw it. He killed a person right before my eyes, as if he wanted me to see it! Hey, how come no-one would believe me?

[pause]

Bong Pil: [softly] Su Yeol... You're really OK, right?

Gyeong Tae gently interrupts Su Yeol's silence with some info on Ju Hyeok's non-gaslighting activities. He does a double take, and then tells Su Yeol to stay strong, and that he trusts him.

The first thing that Su Yeol notices is a leaflet for an Alzheimer's treatment program.

At Casa Ryu, the house search is being handled beyond insensitively. Remember Ju, that arsehole cop with the yellow Porsche? Well, that Sylvester-Stallone-lip-slurring wanker is leading said house search, unnecessarily upsetting poor Mama Ryu as Dong Yeol tries to downplay its seriousness to spare her stress. But it's not working, and she cries for him to call Su Yeol.

In the car zooming home, Su Yeol begs Dong Yeol to try to keep her calm. K manifests, but Su Yeol screams at him to fuck off.

Su Yeol arrives and implores asks Ju to go a little easy as his mum's not well. Ju doesn't give a shit:

Ju: We're just doing our job. You know that better than anybody else does. Am I wrong?

As the search continues, Mama Ryu rushes Su Yeol behind an outside corner of the house:

Mama Ryu: Listen carefully, Su Yeol. I remember everything now. That day, you came to our house with a knife in your hand. You were covered in blood.

Su Yeol: What did you say?

Mama Ryu: You ran away after killing your father. I remember everything now.

Su Yeol: Eomma... Why are you being like this? [agitated] What the heck are you saying now?

Mama Ryu: Su Yeol. Listen, Su Yeol. Don't worry about a thing. [crying, but in way as if she doesn't realise it] That knife... I got rid of it. [pause] Oh, right. And very soon, I won't remember anything, anyway.

[Su Yeol starts to cry.]

Mama Ryu: So don't be anxious, OK?

Su Yeol: Eomma. Sin Ju Hyeok got to you, didn't he? You met him at the hospital. That's why you're being like this!

Mama Ryu: [hugs him tightly] It's OK! My sweetheart. It's all right. I will protect you. I will. I promise.

Inside, another cop finds a paper bag in Mama Ryu's room. In it is a bloodied knife.

Ju Hyeok walks out of the station, recalling the fact that he handed over said bag to Mama Ryu and gaslit her into thinking it was Su Yeol's. Su Yeol marches up to him and pins him against a pillar, demanding to know what he did to Mama Ryu:

Su Yeol: What did you do?

Ju Hyeok: I just sent you back to where you belong. Back to that misery.

At this, Su Yeol punches what seems like all of the blood out of Ju Hyeok's face, looking increasingly, worryingly detached. His team and others pull him away and manage to hold him back. Ju and his smirk arrive to drop the final nail: They found a murder weapon at his house. Ju arrests him, despite Su Yeol's team's vehement (and physical) protests, but Su Yeol doesn't fight it, instead staring at Ju Hyeok.

As the team fight against the arrest, K manifests.

Su Yeol: [v.o.] K. You were right. [looks at Ju Hyeok] A scumbag like you deserves to die.

He grabs Ju's gun from his chest holster and fires. K pushes the gun from its intended aim, but we don't know where the bullet lands.

Four months later, Su Yeol watches a snowfall through barred windows. His clothing and heavy-lidded expression reveal he's in a secure mental health facility, sitting in bed.

A doctor approaches him with an orderly, but struggle to get his attention. The doctor asks if he's OK. Shoulders hunched, he nods his head. She looks at his food tray and remarks that he ate a lot today. He mumbles that he's in a good mood. Holding her nose, she tells him he ought to shower because he has a visitor. He swallows a pill they give him.

Said visitor is Hui Gyeom, who's brought some of Mama Ryu's food [in that same bag as the one Su Yeol brought to Jeong Hun]. She asks how he is, worries he's lost weight, and wonders if he's cold. She says everyone is worried about him and is trying to prove his innocence. He doesn't respond, slumped in his chair, head hung low, mouth open. He's a zombie. He yawns. It's so cold we can see his breath in the air.

Hui Gyeom asks if K is really gone. Su Yeol... asks who K is, and says he's sleepy. Hui Gyeom struggles to hold back tears as she gently encourages him to eat. On her way out, she tries to sound upbeat through sobs as she tells Mama Ryu that Su Yeol enjoyed the food.

Back in his room, an again-wallgazing Su Yeol rolls up out of bed, stands up, and spits out his pill, then hides it inside his mattress with several others. YES!

Cue the trusty Bae and K [as some Korean reporters keep calling it] theme as K manifests behind Su Yeol and puts him in a headlock. The two grapple and Su Yeol, now much swifter in his fighting moves, gets the advantage and pins K to the floor, whereupon K relents:

K: Are you ready?

[Su Yeol lifts K off the floor.]

Su Yeol: Let's go. Let's get out of here and finish off that jerk, Sin Ju Hyeok.

The pair exchange smiles. And probably lasciviously make out after the freeze frame.

Dear lord, that's the penultimate episode done. Firstly, I'm happy that it ended on a (relatively) positive note, because the entire episode was just a laundry list of horribly upsetting things but depicted through fantastic performances, especially the supporting roles: everyone from Kang Ae Shim's discomfited panic as Mama Ryu to Jang Nam Boo's shattered agony as Bok Jun. LDW, too, leveraging his heavy, expressive eyes to make us worry about this dickhead. We like this dickhead. We don't want to see this dickhead lose or get hurt.

But fuck, if this wasn't a hard episode to watch. Ju Hyeok... I feel like there aren't words to describe how utterly repellent he is to any crumb of moral goodness in this world. Gaslighting at-risk, traumatised children is bad enough, but to manipulate and upset an elderly woman with Alzheimers, as well? If I believed in a hell, I would personally volunteer to escort there the type of oxygen thief who would exploit and abuse the most vulnerable among us. No wonder Su Yeol was so blinded by rage that someone did that to his mother, someone he said he cherishes (along with Dong Yeol) more than his own life. I famously avoid conflict but if I were in his position, I, too would be in the horrifyingly faux-calm eye of my own storm.

We can't say we weren't warned, though: At the beginning of this episode, Su Yeol did tell us he'd let Ju Hyeok drag him to misery. So, you know, that's on us, I guess.

I'm looking forward to all the loose ends being tied up tomorrow: What will happen to Yong? Will we ever find out why Ju Hyeok chose The Eye, and how he got it? Is Doctor Heart Mender ever coming back? Wil Su Yeol get to eat a Quiznos? Presuming that now everyone knows about K (and not just Hui Gyeom), how have the others reacted to this? What do Dong Yeol and Mama Ryu make of K's existence?

Speaking of K: I'm not ready to say goodbye to him. Nope, not at all, can't. Won't. Shan't. Puppy must stay. Can't he just sit quietly in a little corner of a garden shed, waiting for our protagonist to come out and play with him, like Ed in Shaun of the Dead? Please?

I'm not pre-crying. YOU'RE pre-crying.

Stray thoughts:

Boss Yong and/or Andrei are Catholic. Also: She very clearly knows exactly how to cremate someone.

I did mention it above but I'll mention it again here: At Su Yeol's second therapy appointment (around the 6.5-minute mark), he's wearing the exact same clothes as he was when he left the appointment and had The Big Staring Match with Ju Hyeok. K is also wearing the same outfit as he did before.

K so angry at Ju Hyeok's gaslighting attempt that he calls him a "psycho" in English.

Of course K would be the one to wear his uniform all scruffy-like.

Between Su Yeol looking like a dinosaur and Kim Shin looking like a dinosaur, I guess LDW and Gong Yoo are just a pair of prehistoric ajeossis.

Su Yeol, after the junkyard, why do you think that producing a wad of cash and then offering only some of it to someone as a bribe is enough? Once they've seen how much you're holding, you're going to have to give all of it to them. You berk.

Su Yeol adding "You can help them, too", when talking about additional linked cases, shows how far his compassion has come.

What's with the pet cremation theme? First Su Yeol's childhood dog, then Ma's stovepipe car, and now Yong's impulse buy. Is this a new PPL?

I'd thought that activated charcoal (administered orally) was usually given in overdose cases since it's less invasive than gastric lavage, but maybe that depends on the substance overdosed on and/or the time since the overdose/absorption. The window for AC, from what I know, is fairly small.

I know it's in the context of trying to bond with a witness over shared gaslighting, but a character (Su Yeol) talking openly about his anxiety – in fact, the entire exchange with Bok Jun about the two men's traumas – is just something I'd like to see more from TV shows in general. Both of those actors just broke my heart in that scene.

Ju Hyeok mentions that he and Bok Jun volunteer together. I can't imagine it being easy to lie about that, so I'm guessing that was true?

Ju Hyeok and Su Yeol's exchange as they're baiting each other out was a fantastic game of mind chess. This is the kind of stuff you get when the antagonist is as smart or even smarter than the already-smart protagonist.

Why is LDW's mouth constantly so wet?

Boss Yong slipping into that car with the smoothest stealth this side of an assassin super-enhanced with cat DNA.

Dong Yeol doesn't seem terribly shocked at the thought of his brother getting his end away in a car. I wouldn't be surprised if this has happened before.

That said, what does Dong Yeol think that sex sounds like?

I thought Yong was holding a knife to Dong Yeol's throat but, since she didn't use it in the car and threw Dong Yeol to Su Yeol once he pulled his gun, it looked like she was bluffing. Heck, I believed it.

Yong doesn't strike me as someone who'd be satisfied with just seeing Andrei's killer in court.

Of the team, Hui Gyeom looks the most elated to have gotten the arrest warrant for Ju Hyeok.

Is Su Yeol trying for a personal best in every episode for getting strangled? That's three times this week.

Bok Jun's entire story was just devastating: He lost his entire youth, was wrongfully convicted, was exposed to his gaslighter's abuse even during prison, lived with all the stigma and closed doors faced by an ex-con, seemed to have no support system, and outright admitted in his final moments to multiple suicide attempts and how scared he was during them. He deserved better.

Ju Hyeok has even more perfect teeth than Wi Ha Jun. Which I didn't think was possible.

Kudos for Ju Hyeok's brilliantly twisted method during his interrogation scene. It was like watching someone who's about to get fired take control of the exit interview and turn it into an HR meeting against the HR rep.

Ju Hyeok's gaslighting is especially potent because he invokes even small morsels of his patients' trauma. For Su Yeol, he invokes his running away after his altercation with Yun Ho when talking about Su Yeol "running away" from the "truth" that Yun Ho is a figment of his imagination.

I take Hui Gyeom's reaction ("You should have told me before") as a sign that, if he had told her at the start, then she'd have understood. Or maybe I just have too much faith in Hui Gyeom.

Hui Gyeom told Su Yeol he was off the case; since he's her senior, can she do that? He looked like he was still working on it anyway when Gyeong Tae handed him some files.

Why did Dong Yeol initially call his mother by her given name (Seung Seuk)?

It's a small thing, but Dong Yeol's spent this entire episode worrying about and taking care of his and Su Yeol's eomma.

Jae Seon defending Boss Yong's integrity: "She's a drug dealer, not a con artist!" I love him.

Even without knowing she was gaslit, Mama Ryu's stressful cries for Su Yeol during the house search brought me to tears. As did, frankly, her scene with Su Yeol.

When Ju Hyeok gives Mama Ryu the knife, it's just in the bag by itself. When the cops find it in her room, it's in the bag, but wrapped in a dusky pink scarf.

Su Yeol's quiet rage as he punched Ju Hyeok was both disquieting and desolating. Not once did he take his eyes off of Ju Hyeok, yet his awareness of everything else felt orphaned of his surroundings. It reminded me of the glass-eyed stares that the infected got before their suicides in Bird Box, or from other, real-life dissociations caused by a negative shift in brain chemistry.

Ju Hyeok licking his own blood with that perverted smile: How did he manage to make himself even more fucked-up than he already is?

The eerie silence as Su Yeol grabbed the gun was perfectly placed.

Su Yeol's window-gazing right at the station was the last time he would look out of a window not covered in bars.

What I'm getting from the final scene is that Su Yeol would purposefully make himself reek of death (and upset Hui Gyeom) just to sell a bit.

Even knowing he was faking it now during this recap rewatch, it still broke my heart watching Su Yeol so...gone in the hospital, AND how much it was breaking Hui Gyeom's heart to see him like that.

Mama Ryu's maiden name is SEO. SEO. LIKE SEO MOON-JO. LOOK AT THAT STRANGERS FROM HELL REFERENCE. Was the food human meat with tons of MSG? Hui Gyeom did say "he ate all of it."

Xiu’s linkpearl is ringing. It shouldn’t be ringing. The hour was late, Jun was away doing his monthly duties, and as far as she knew, she hadn’t angered the oyabun enough to warrant a call. All in all, Xiu had been on her best behavior. The Jade Palace was never uneventful, but it was quieter in recent days. Of course, Xiu knew better than to trust too much quiet. 

It was usually hiding something.

With a soft groan, she pushes herself up on her elbows and reaches for the little jade-hued device, laced with gold paint. It was a newer device, this one. It was for secure calls - to her brother, to the prince, to the servant girls if they needed her and she was not within close proximity. 

It’s not a voice she recognizes chiming in from the other end. 

“This is Tsai Xiu, isn’t it? I hope this isn’t a bad time.”

A pause. A heartbeat, a skip. The Doman is good, but it isn’t perfect. Accented. Not a familiar voice. A feminine voice, but not one she knows. And it’s someone using her... almost real name.

What in the seven hells?

“Who is this?” Xiu asks, eyeing up the walls and the doors, and she can hear the other voice smiling when it replies.

“Oh, silly me. It’s Audrey Matsuda-- or Yuna Matsuda, I guess, you may know me better by? Sorry. Still getting used to it. This is probably a big surprise! I’m sorry about that, but I got the contact information from...”

There’s another pause, and Xiu has to wonder why she’s still entertaining this call and why she hasn’t hung up yet.

Yuna. Yuna Matsuda.

Hana’s baby sister.

Hells. Fucking hells.

“--Mori Takahashi, who said he got it from your brother... Hui,” Yuna says, like she’s reading something. And now that she’s said her name, Xiu is able to hear it. She has a similar voice to her sister, in pitch and tone, but she can already tell that Yuna is not as soft-spoken. There’s a certain liveliness to the way she speaks, rather than the demure tone of a geisha that Xiu had grown so accustomed to. 

And Mori. Of course it was Mori. Of course he’d squeal to this woman’s father. Of course. Had he already set eyes on her? Was he already plotting something? 

Not important, Xiu reminds herself. Figure out why she’s calling you. Now. Figure out why she has so much information. And what the hell, Hui? How drunk were you to give Mori this line? 

“Mori is really talkative,” Yuna muses, almost apologetically, like she’s able to read Xiu’s mind, and while Xiu knows the likelihood of that is low, it still shakes her. It’s hard to catch her by surprise, but... Kami help her, she doesn’t remember the last time she had been so surprised. “I guess he spilled a lot to my dad. I’m sorry about that. That’s probably not ideal for you. But don’t worry. It’s just me, and I’m not gonna blow your cover or anything to the Garleans you helped. Lian Hua, right? I’ll call you that in case they walk in.” 

Xiu stares blankly at the wall in front of her. She can’t even find it in herself to be panicked. Yuna Matsuda talked a lot, but it felt natural. She wasn’t nervous. It was like Xiu was an old friend that she was catching up with, and Xiu was finding it hard to stop listening. Usually, by now, she would be questioning. She would be angry. It would make sense to be angry.

But this is Hana’s baby sister - if she’s to be believed - and... she sounds like her, in part. Hana was soft-spoken but she had been bubbly, too. Still... There was something else in the way that Yuna spoke that was familiar. It’s a horrible sort of dawning realization that Xiu comes to once she figures it out.

Misaki-fucking-Ito, Yuna and Hana’s cousin, sneaking in within just two minutes of conversation and trapping you before you even knew it, wrapping you around their fingers with pretty voices and easy conversation.

Not good.

“Yuna...” Xiu starts, closing her eyes, and she hears a shift of fabric, like Yuna was adjusting how she was sitting - like she was perking up. “This is... an incredible surprise, yes. Hana said you were dead.”

“Yeah, but you already knew that wasn’t true,” Yuna replies, and Xiu can still hear her smiling. “You know a lot about me, I think, ma’am. And that’s okay. I don’t have a lot to hide. But you do, right?”

Xiu pauses again, tilting her head to the side as she lets the silence fill the air. 

What did she mean by that? 

“So this Mori guy, I just couldn’t get him to stop talking about you. He went on for a while about how I reminded him of my sister, but you - kami, you were his favorite subject. And the Garleans - my fiancé ‘s family, oh, and don’t worry about him, your real name is still a secret between us - they said some stuff, too. They don’t know as much, and I’m sorry, I know I’m kind of rambling, so let me get to the point! You know anything about ghosts?”

W... What?

Xiu lifts a hand to the bridge of her nose and pinches, closing her eyes. There were a lot of ways this weird conversation could have gone, but that... That one, again, took the woman by surprise. Ghost? Why was she talking about ghosts? And why was she talking so damned much? 

To keep you spinning. To keep you on your toes and ready to tell her everything because you’re taken off guard.

“With all due respect, that’s quite enough. I don’t know you. I don’t know what you could possibly want from me, but this conversation is over. Do not contact me again--”

“When I first got here, a priestess told me I had a ghost following me,” Yuna continues, like Xiu hadn’t said anything, and she blinks, and she deflates, shifting so that she can stare out at the pond in the courtyard. “One that sort of looked like me, but her hair was lighter and so were her eyes, and she was scorched. Everywhere. Like she’d burned to death.” 

Xiu swallows. Yuna’s voice had grown softer, more coaxing, and Xiu thinks, this woman is a manipulator. She’s just like Misaki. She knows exactly how to use a person and I am sitting here, letting her do it, because she said a name that makes me feel guilty and awful. The oyabun taught me better.

“And that’s not really... Truthfully, ma’am, that’s not the biggest reason I’m trying to ask you for help. It seems like my sister needs some help peacefully crossing to the other side, and maybe she would trust you to do that - to help her. But... Right now, there’s something more pressing. Like a Garlean pilus primus and his cohorts and their spirits being out of place.” 

Slowly, Xiu closes her eyes.

“You’re out of your godsdamned mind if you think I’ll help you with anything like that,” she says quietly, tightly. “Do you know what the Garleans did to our people, Yuna? You were able to dodge seeing it firsthand, and for that, I am truly happy for you. I helped your Garleans once. I won’t do it again.”

This time, Yuna pauses. She lets the silence settle just long enough for Xiu to let her own words echo back at her. 

“But you’re the one person I know to turn to,” Yuna murmurs, and Xiu grits her teeth. No. She doesn’t want to believe her. She doesn’t want to believe the sadness that creeps into Yuna’s voice, but it’s like she had cast a spell. Xiu knows better than to trust her.

And yet...

“I know. It’s a lot to ask for, ma’am, from a stranger especially. But you know-- you know who I’m talking about, right? The oldest Benes boy? I know him. I can see his ghost, and-- we all can, thanks to my kami, but it’s... not right. And from everything I’ve heard about Hana, I think they’re similar.”

Another pause. Xiu knows that it is calculated. Still, she listens. 

“I may not get a second chance to know my big sister. But Cato, he has a shot at that second chance. If you don’t think he deserves it, then... let me try to convince you. If Hana has really been around this whole time, then let her convince you.”

“It is wrong to use your sister as a bargaining chip--”

Suddenly, the line crackles, and Xiu flinches as the whoosh of a fire fills her horns. She holds the linkpearl away, stiffens as she hears the horrible sound of what could only be a dying woman’s shriek, and then there is silence - come just as quickly as it had gone. She hears Yuna’s lips part, hears her suck her teeth just slightly, as Xiu’s heart races.

Hana?

“I’m not trying to. I’m trying to ask for help, as a desperate woman. My family got ripped apart.” Again, Yuna’s voice is soft, quiet. “But I found a new one. And I would like to be part of something whole, ma’am-- Xiu. You can understand that, can’t you?” 

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Hang up. Say no and hang up. Smash the linkpearl. Don’t let her do this. Don’t let her crawl under your skin. Don’t let this girl wrap you up around her finger. You can tell it’s what she’s good at.

“Convince me - at the Jade Palace,” is what Xiu actually says, quietly, staring at the wall again once she opens her eyes. “Those are my terms. You come here. I don’t go to you. Not unless I can be certain of you and your... ghosts.” 

“Deal.”

Yuna says it so quickly, and Xiu wonders if it’s a smirk on her lips on the other end of the line. Is this what she had been angling for? And hells - hells, was Xiu really evil, to invite a young woman where the Jade Lord could reach her? 

Something tells her that even he might have his hands full with this one. 

“I’m staying at my father’s home. You can forward the date there. I look forward to meeting you, my lady. And... thank you. Really, thank you. This means a lot to me. It would mean a lot to Hana, too, I bet.”

Xiu wants to tell her she’s wrong.

She can’t, because she isn’t. Hana was kind. Hana was the best of them. 

It’s true, she thinks, that the good die young. And now she’s stuck with the good’s manipulative little sister.

Man shinwon is so fucking cute he cares about his members so much and always keeps up with their personal schedules and what they're doing outside of the group. He's keeping up with blue birthday almost obsessively to the point where he was contacted by the director asking if he wanted to know what happens. He also keep talking about doing a "ji seo jun challenge" where you're supposed to burn hongseok pcs and post it on tiktok lmao... Personal top 5 in Wo Men De Ge  / Our Songs, Season 1

After finishing all 12 eps of the 1st season of  “Wo Men De Ge” / “Our Songs”, I am listing my personal top 5 pairs of “Young Singer x Old but Gold Singer” teams in the show, mostly just to have an excuse to gush and recommend some of my favourite performances from this beautiful, beautiful music show. 

5. Xiao Zhan x Na Ying (and Angela Chang) - Team: Na Zhan Dui

What I really liked about them: The fact that they challenged many styles! Perhaps it’s because Xiao Zhan is currently an actor and not specialised in any music type, but their performances were among the most diverse. They did rock, disco, old Chinese classics...Singing-wise, Xiao Zhan does nice switches to falsetto, Na Ying’s voice is broad and with its own feel, and Angela Chang who replaced NY for a few eps has such a special and beautiful voice ugh. But what I liked most about them is probably Na Ying herself. Her outspoken personality and sense rly got to me and she was my favourite “Model Singer” in Group B. She was also so open to accompanying XZ in trying new styles and to put an emphasis on performance (as in, the visual aspect of it) to help XZ out. I think for someone who’s not currently a singer, he got very lucky she was his partner. 

What I found to be a pity: Xiao Zhan sings pretty nicely, but it’s true that when you have Ayanga and Zhou Shen next door, it’s pretty hard for his voice to stand out. A few times, I found myself feeling like Na Ying or Angela was carrying the song single-handedly and couldn’t rly notice his voice anymore. Angela’s voice especially stands out, so sometimes, it feels like what I remember most from Na Zhan Dui performances is Angela’s great voice and the visual effects. Also, maybe it’s because he has to manage his image a bit more than the other young artists, but Xiao Zhan did come across as quite nervous during the entire show, including during many of the performances. If you only watch him based on this show, he comes across as just a very polite young person (with a pleasant voice). 

Favorite performance(s) from them: 

Gen Zhe Gan Jue Zou / Going with the Feeling (not rly a performance but the song with which NY and XZ got “blindly” paired up, and somehow the song in which he was the most relaxed imo)

Jun Gang Zhi Ye / A Night at the Naval Port (classic lovely song. Imo it was the song in which their voices matched up most seamlessly)

4. Xiao Gui x Luo Qi - Team: Wang Zha 

What I really liked about them: I knew neither of them before the show, but felt like this team truly tried to make a new sound each time and to mix modern elements into old songs (which fits perfectly with the show’s theme). Luo Qi is so open to Xiao Gui’s suggestions and so humble about trying things outside her comfort zone, even though she is the senior. They also had a really nice old sister-little brother relationship, full of mutual respect, and it was kind of refreshing to have the young artist be like ‘it’s ok, it’s ok’ and being the encouraging or optimistic one in the team. Among the younger artists, Xiao Gui is the only rapper, so being on this show could be pretty challenging but Luo Qi being so open to trying new things made it work. She really went outside her comfort zone, and I loved this team for it. They are also both really pleasant - mostly quiet but polite and comfortable. All-round lovely pair. 

What I found to be a pity: In a way, because Luo Qi was so accommodating and humble, sometimes it felt like Xiao Gui might have overpushed her a bit? Perhaps he could have been a tad more considerate, but we don’t see much of their interactions and overall they do seem like they have a good relationship. 

Favorite performance(s) from them: Hui Lai / Come Back (the way the rap got mixed into this song feels so very natural) 

3. Ayanga x Fei Yuqing - Team: (God Xiao Ge team names are hard to remember) Yun Dan Feng Qing 

What I really liked about them: Well of course, the voices and the singing technique. haha I did not know Ayanga before this show, but HOLY SHIT. Not a musical actor for nothing. HE CAN SING. And he can sing so many styles, too. He is GOOD. Watching them, I thought, shit, among all the young artists we saw, only he could have been paired up with a senior like Fei Yuqing (and perhaps Zhou Shen, but we’ll come to him later). Their voices are distinctive, but the style in which they sing have certain similarities, so they match quite well. Basically, this is a team based on talent, skills and experience. They only sing songs that sound like classics but holy fucking shit, I loved the way they sang them. Other than the singing - and this is not a team thing - but I was rly surprised to find out that Fei Yuqing was quite funny. Individually speaking, both he and Ayanga were entertaining while remaining ever so pleasant. They were real pleasures to watch. 

What I found to be a pity: I thought there was a lack of team chemistry, which could be in part due to how they got paired up, but yeah, they just never really felt like a team, more like two very polite and courteous singers who decided to work together for a few performances. Also, I am absolutely not surprised by it, but I guess, since it’s the Fei Yuqing, both young artists were fully accommodating him and not the other way round. It is not a bad thing in FYQ’s case because his singing is beautifully amazing and hey its his last show anyway, but it would have been fun to see more sparks here and there.

Favorite performance(s) from them: 

Juan Zhu Lian / Rolling up the Beaded Curtain (haha are you ready for pure skills to fuck you up? I liked Juan Zhu Lian before, but this version is incredible)

Xin Yuan Yang . Hu Die Meng / New Mandarin Duck. Butterfly Dream (again pure skills but also the harmonising. a+++) 

2. Liu Yuning x Ren Xianqi - Team: Jie Tou Pai Dang

What I really liked about them: This team is one of the teams that felt the most like a team. They have similar past experiences and I liked that they had a chill older brother + reserved younger brother chemistry. I also liked that they both seem to be people who are passionate about different aspects of music (like singing yes, but also music arrangement overall). Ren Xianqi was so open to letting Liu Yuning express what he wanted / add in the elements he wanted to each performance, or have LYN’s band be in charge of re-arranging the songs. Before this show, all I knew from Ren Xianqi was his “Xin Tai Ruan”, but I found him so lovely and nice during the whole show! He only had kind praise for all the other artists, was positive throughout, and well, Group A only had lovely "Model Singers”, but RXQ stood out in this respect. He and Liu Yuning had such a comfortable dynamics and many of the songs they sang happen to be all-time favourites of mine so of course bonus points. Singing-wise, I love Liu Yuning’s voice. It’s not like he can hit super high notes or anything, but this guy rly gets the right feeling out of each song through his voice. All in all, I loved the team.

What I found to be a pity: Literally, the only thing I find to be a limiting factor for this team is Ren Xianqi’s voice aaaaa TT. It felt like he struggled a bit at times, and compared to other senior singers, his voice doesn’t have as much of a distinctive feel, which I thought was a pity... Some of his uh...moves during some of the performances also felt a bit old-fashioned, but I think I can live with that.  

Favorite performance(s) from them: 

Tian Ya  (the song...the arrangement...the spirit...the LYN’s singing...)

Ai Jiang Shan Geng Ai Mei Ren (mainly because this song is one of my all-time favourites and you cant go wrong with it, but this is not my favorite rendition of it either)

1. Zhou Shen x Li Keqin - Team: Qin Shen Shen

What I really liked about them: EVERYTHING FUCK HAHA. ok so. I started this show with pretty even feelings for all the teams, but if one team really grabbed my heart from ep. 1 onwards and threw it into the fire pit, it’s these two. GOD Can I even talk about them neutrally?? Chemistry-wise...where did they even get all this chemistry? No one knows. On stage, I don’t know if I’ve heard two voices that match as well as theirs when they harmonise before, but if I did, I don’t remember. Zhou Shen’s voice is high and floating like some kind of ethereal mermaid’s, while Li Keqin’s voice is so stable, so warm it’s the perfect match. But the chemistry off-stage?? It’s even more incredible??? If Liu Yuning and Ren Xianqi are like a pair of older and younger brothers, what are Zhou Shen and Li Keqin? No one knows, and certainly not them. All the terms have been thrown in: match made in heaven, perfect match, a couple that separated and had a child (thanks LKQ) but also father and son, ‘someone who likes music’ (what?)....but basically, everyone on the show agrees that their chemistry is uncanny and it’s not stopping them from continuing with whatever they’re doing. This team basically has it all and they know it: Singing skills and technique? they both have it. Passion for singing? They both have it. Perfect chemistry? They have it. Stellar and complementary sense of comedy and humour? They have it. Theatrical smoke as their only visual effect on stage? They have it (jk). Every episode that they’re on, I am laughing and smiling from ears to ears and thanking the heavens that they got paired up. Why are they like this.

What I found to be a pity: The fact that I can’t buy an album from them as a duo? hahaha OK, perhaps just the fact that they stuck mostly with ballads (except for Ye Lang Disco) and so I would have loved to see more sparks from them. But this complaint is also very empty because it’s not like I didn’t thoroughly enjoy every single ballad they sang...haha haha....Ah, one thing I found to be a veeerrrry slight pity is that, as ZS himself says, he’s quite insecure. In contrast, LKQ is quite optimistic, so it makes for a lot of comedic clashes in this respect (annnnd it becomes a thing I like about them again). OK ok one thing is perhaps that ZS’s jokes can be a little bit borderline, but honestly, they receive each others’ jokes so well it becomes part of their charm and chemistry.........I guess I’m biased....ok....I'll shut up

Favorite performance(s) from them:

Tian Xia You Qing Ren / All the Lovers in the World (oh my God oh my God oh my God thank you Zhou Shen for choosing this song)

Ye Lang Disco / Wild Wolf Disco (?) (BECAUSE THIS IS Qin Shen Shen AT THEIR FINEST: ABSOLUTE DORKS WHO SLAY AT PERFORMING. Na Ying mentioned this as the inspiration for her and Xiao Zhan’s disco challenge, and that’s for a GOOD reason.)

Honestly I thought Zhou Hua Jian should be there somewhere, because I am a HUGE fan of Zhou Hua Jian songs, but I did feel like his performances were a bit...slapdash in this show haha. And Yi Qiao seems very nice but most of the time, I didn’t feel her presence as much, and it felt like I was enjoying the performance because no matter what, ZHJ’s voice  is fucking good. I also found it to be a pity that he had to constantly remind the audience about points and voting - in the beginning it was funny, but by the end it felt a little repetitive - and that some of his comments could be a little bit borderline and clumsy. So not in the top 5, but his team’s performance of “Qi Shi Bu Xiang Zou / In truth, I don’t want to leave” did make me cry. A lot.  

Anyways, overall, I rate this show 10 / 10 and would encourage anyone who likes music to watch it! I know many people who watched the show are international Xiao Zhan fans, well, if so, you’ll see a lot of him at least! (and your attention might get snatched by some others if you’re not careful)

The writing style confused me at first, but you’ll get the hang of it. Jun basically does not know what he feels and just chalk’s up everything to awkwardness. This is a fic where someone pines after someone without knowing it. 

Idk why but it broke me. All I know is I read this at midnight and fell asleep crying. I was an emotional mess for days after it. 

(Ah maybe it’s because of how precious someone could be when they get what they deserve, even if they think they don’t deserve it.)
