Boromir and Eowyn Fics (Circa 2002-2017)

(Feb. 10, 2018) - The following post is basically a “directory” or sorts of all the stories focusing on Boromir and Eowyn interacting with each other in Lord of the Rings fanfiction, either on a romantic level or a purely platonic level. All the stories I’ve ever found at least.

Most of the stories are one shots, the others are abandoned multi-chapter stories that never got off the ground due to a lack of authorial interest, and on a rare occasion, there are series fics that aren’t chronological, but are set in the same universe wherein Boromir lives.

A Valentine’s Day Courtship | K+ | One Shot | Modern AU | [FFNET | AO3] | Publish Date: April 30, 2014 Summary: Boromir had never taken much notice of Valentine's Day before. Until the day Eowyn punched him during recess, and he fell head over heels. AU.

Her Hope in the Darkness | K | One Shot | Publish Date: September 18, 2014 Summary: The ball had been just one more adventure among countless others. Yet as Eowyn continued in her journey, that night – HIM – refused to let her go. AU. Companion piece to "His Hope in the Darkness."

Their Hope in the Light | K | One Shot | Publish Date: December 3, 2014 Summary: A ring is returned, a question answered, and two weary souls are reunited. AU. Companion piece to "His Hope in the Darkness" and "Her Hope in the Darkness."

Beyond Duty | Malva  | K+ | Chapters: 2/? | Publish Date: March 4, 2010 Summary: War is approaching, but the alliance between Rohan and Gondor has weakened. To tighten the loosened ties, Denethor makes the House of Eorl an offer it cannot refuse. The lives of two people take a different turn. Note: Beyond Duty feels like the natural evolution of the last three abandoned multi-chapter stories that attempted to focus on B/E (especially in terms of the “Arranged Marriage” thing). However, it is also is the most unrealized of the stories clocking in at two chapters. Again, it’s mostly set-up, but, Eowyn is in her twenties instead of being seventeen (this time), and how the respective characters react to the news feels closer to their personas.

Summary: In an attempt to salvage relations between Gondor and Rohan, a marriage is arranged between the Lady Eowyn of Rohan and the Lord Boromir of Gondor. This is their story. Note: Duty is yet another “Arranged Marriage to Avoid War” B/E story that never got off the ground. It’s mostly set up, but the haste of the author is noticeable in the brevity of the chapters. The “Boromir dislikes women” shtick also relatively strong in this fic as well.

Road to Mundburg | Morgyn Leri | G-T | Series Status: Incomplete | Publish Date: March 4, 2014 (est.) Summary: A universe where Éowyn travels to Gondor to become Boromir's wife at age 19. Her presence in Gondor, and absence in Rohan changes things, but not so greatly that you can't see the bones of canon beneath.

Hope (Series) | Rosa Cotton |  K | Series Status: Complete | Publish Date: April 12, 2013 (on Archive of Our Own) Summary: A Cinderella-like retelling of Boromir and Eowyn. AU. Movieverse. Note: It’s exactly the stories you’re thinking they are.

Hero | Shkittles | K | School Paper | Publish Date: November 12, 2012 Summary: An analytical comparison/contrast of Boromir and Eowyn. Note: It’s a bit odd that the essayist compares Eowyn’s basic compassion for people like Merry or Aragorn maternal or frames it as pregnancy metaphor.

Notes: This is probably the closest story I’ve ever read that portrays a fairly solid friendship or more-than-polite interaction between them that feels really genuine.

I have actually started writing fiction again regularly with the new year (started with Yuletide Dance Me to Your Beauty -- Queen’s Thief). It had been a full year since I had produced any fiction—first time in 12 years I had not written any stories or novels. (I did keep writing the Tolkien non-fiction stuff had a couple of conference presentations during my fallow period.) But I will never let myself get so out-of-practice again. It felt very unhealthy. Writing fiction is good for me. Even if the stories are not masterpieces! Maybe I will get better as I go on.

I have also started working on some of my major WIPs. The one I have looked at and fooled around with is Summer's End. It is now at 30,000 words or so--not all published to date--and will be between 40,000 and 50,000 when finished. Next in line is the Nerdanel fic Five Times That Nerdanel Said 'Yes' and Mereth Aderthad. Also, I am writing a few Dragon Emperor ficlets. Having posted any yet, but will let you know when I do. The first is called: "The Arrival of the Great Avar."
