Island in the Sun: ‘One Drop’ in the Ocean By Theresa Brown

Let’s face it – America was not ready for Dorothy Dandridge.
Her beauty is undeniable. And, as Janet Jackson notes in her TCM tribute to Dandridge, Dorothy was a ‘triple threat’ with singing, dancing and acting in her repertoire. She just needed a chance to shine. Daughter of character actress Ruby Dandridge, Dorothy appeared in soundies and small uncredited parts throughout the 1940s. In BRIGHT ROAD (‘53) she plays a schoolteacher offering G-rated maternal love and understanding to her students in a rural school district. She really comes into prominence with Otto Preminger’s 1954 film CARMEN JONES. Sexy, sassy, fiery...dangerous, Dandridge swaggers like a gunslinger and sets the screen ablaze as the tempestuous Carmen. Her BRIGHT ROAD co-star, Harry Belafonte, is the hapless handsome soldier who tragically tangles with her. Dandridge was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance.
I rather enjoyed her next movie coming three years after CARMEN JONES, ISLAND IN THE SUN (’57). It’s sort of a PEYTON PLACE in the Caribbean with different storylines of politics, family secrets, murder and miscegenation weaving and wending their way around coconut trees and sugar cane plantations. May I offer one sticky wicket of a caveat? You’ll probably have to leave your 21st century racial perspective at home when you visit. The movie is 63 years old and does give a nod to all those antiquated racial tropes. My jaw dropped a coupla times.

Let me map out the scorecard for you. A Caribbean country is about to undergo the changeover from colony to independence. Pivotal in that change is union leader Harry Belafonte. Pre-dating Malcolm and Martin and today’s ‘social justice’ warriors, Belafonte’s character is interested in uplifting his people on the island. He has a casual relationship with Dandridge that doesn’t have enough fire to toast a marshmallow. What’s wrong with THAT picture? In the movie, he has history on the island with Joan Fontaine. There’s a tentative attempt to explore where they can go, but class and color are a bumpy road for them to hurdle (perhaps the script’s “convenient” way to keep them apart?). He’s more interested in power than romance. Gee, all that handsomeness gone to waste. I don’t know that Belafonte quite has any chemistry with Fontaine once you see Dandridge on his arm – or am I the only one blinded here? But Belafonte steps up his acting game opposite Academy Award-winner Fontaine.
Also in the cast, we have Stephen Boyd, ripe for the picking as the current governor’s son whose return to the island after months stationed in Egypt—without a woman in sight—is pointedly noted. He’s back on the island until he jets off to London. It’s said of him:
“A male, young, white, unmarried, titled and comparatively rich. Good heavens, what else do you think the girls would talk about.”
Boyd spots virginal-in-white Joan Collins at the Governor’s ball. Yes, you read that right – I said virginal and Joan Collins in the same sentence, and he’s interested. So is she. They start a slow-building romance. They don’t make themselves part of the island’s life. They’re into each other. Don’t worry, a freak-out lays ahead for them. Her brother is played by James Mason. They are heirs to the largest sugar cane plantation on the island and Mason’s a weakling. You know the type: the second son...ever second best...insecure...lots to prove. He has contempt for the islanders; suspects his wife of having an affair with the dashing, accomplished Michael Rennie; and decides to run as a political opponent to the popular Belafonte. Belafonte’s response:
“Wouldn’t it be fair to say the only reason you seek election is to revenge yourself upon the whites whom you now think despise you?”
Mason’s got a lot on his plate. (And it ain’t conch chowder).

When Dandridge first appears in the movie, she and Belafonte make a stunning couple entering the governor’s party. She immediately lets Belafonte know she has a mind of her own. She’s confident, truthful, tries to do herself some good pitching for a job in the governor’s office. She fits right into the tony setting with no apology...and wearing no maid’s uniform. She carries herself with quiet sophistication. She just is. She’s noticed by the governor’s military attaché (John Justin), and he immediately falls head over heels. I like Justin and Dandridge together. He’s not trying to keep their relationship secret. He might have one twinge of jealousy or discomfort, but all in all they’re fine together. You might think this interracial romance would be problematic as well but it’s not, compared to Belafonte and Fontaine. What’s the difference? Food for thought. But I think we all know why.
Justin: “Somewhere someone once said there’s always a point in the beginning of a love affair where a man can draw back. Where he’s still safe.”
Dandridge: “Is that what you want, to be safe?”
Justin: “I’ve been in love. Funny, I don’t know anything about you.” Dandridge: “What would you like to know?”
Justin: “All about you. Everything.”

There is a moment with this couple I really like; it’s provocative in a non-provocative way. (No Spoiler!) Dandridge is lying fully clothed on Justin’s bed, reading his manuscript...with no shoes on. Big deal, right? I think it speaks tremendously to their level of intimacy. She’s at home in his space. When have you ever seen THAT in movies of the 50s...or 40s or 30s for that matter?
I like this Daryl Zanuck-production. It’s a colorful, lush, melodramatic production with racial and sexual tension, sexual restraint and good-looking people. Dorothy Dandridge is very easy to watch on film. Yes, she’s easy on the eyes, but she’s also not chewing the scenery and has a very natural presence on screen. You never see her act. I wish she’d done more. She’s not exotic. She’s just a woman...a human. She had many facets she could tap into to express different characters. I’m so glad TCM, with the guidance of acclaimed author Donald Bogle, spotlighted her career. This gets a wider audience to get to know her. No, America was not ready for Dorothy Dandridge.
But she wasn’t going to spend her time waiting for us.

(Guilty Party: I took the images from IMDB because I can’t screengrab over 8 hours and besides, my dog told me to.)

Slasher: The Executioner is a Canadian TV series about, um, slashers and all that slasher stuff. Bogling about The Internet I discovered that the creator, one Aaron Martin by name, has wisely opted for an anthology format, whereby each season (two at present) is a complete storyline. Apparently there is connective tissue between each season to engender a feel of them taking place in the same Slasher Universe; which is like the Marvel®©™ Universe but with less quips and more mom porn and severed hands. I say “apparently” because I haven’t seen the second season (Slasher: Guilty Party (2017)) I have seen the first season though and that definitely has more mom porn and severed hands than the Marvel®©™ Cinematic Universe.

Now, if you’re reading this thing which is about a TV show called Slasher, then you might think you like slasher movies, but do you like slasher movies enough to watch what is effectively a 7 hour and change slasher movie? Do you? Huh? Huh? That’s a normal working day right there. You are right to be hesitant, as that doesn’t sound like it would work, at least not as entertainment, maybe as a kind of torture. The usual slasher movie is a timidly formulaic creature, so we can characterise the average slasher movie as starting with a brief kill, then some flopping bonelessly about with a solid hour of “meet the characters”, then 40 minutes or so of mayhem, climaxing with a one on one slobberknocker. Stick to that formula for 8 episodes and you’d end up (NB: the maths is a bit loose here) with an exciting first episode, 5.5 episodes of dishwater dull soap-operatics and then an insanely violent final 1.5 episodes. That would of course be stupid, which is one of roughly a billion reasons why they didn’t ask me to make it. No, they asked Aaron Martin and the Slasher gods should be thankful that Aaron Martin knew what to do.

A nagging sense of fairness demands I should pause to note that hundreds of people were involved in the making of Slasher: The Executioner, but it’s accepted shorthand to say “Aaron Martin…” So, “Aaron Martin” made a long-ass slasher movie, but realising this was a marathon and not a sprint, structured each episode so that it worked within the larger narrative framework. It’s an approach familiar to anyone who read mainstream comics back when they had actual stories (rather than today’s unending conversations punctuated by punching; Calm down, Cochise, I’m not saying they were better back then (most of anything is shit after all), I’m just saying they were different). In effect then, for all the none old timey comics fans: in Slasher: The Executioner the uberplot chugs along while various subplots intertwine beneath it breeding red herrings, developing character and basically raising the stakes until uber and under finally intertwine in a climactic crescendo. Oh, and there is at least one kill every episode to keep your unhealthy interest piqued. Got to have those sweet, sweet kills. It is called Slasher after all, not Magic Picnic Time With The Dancing Rainbow Babies. Those dismissive of the slasher movie (Hi, mom!) often underestimate the variety of slasher movies; they aren’t all set in a holiday camp for randy morons on Prom Night one Halloween which is coincidentally, and impossibly, also Friday the 13th. No, there is also Cherry Falls (2000) and, oh, My Bloody Valentine (2009) and, er, anyway, probably some others. This type being The Small Town Terrorised by Its Past slasher, as it is more commonly known. This is the template which Slasher: The Executioner favours most. (The Internet Elves tell me Slasher: Guilty Party riffs on The Holiday Death Camp template).

Events kick off with the present day return of pleasant, newlywed young artist Sarah Bennett (née Ingram) to Waterbury, where she was born on Halloween night in 1988, when a masked killer cut her from the womb of her mother, Rachel. Rachel’s husband, Bryan, had died about ten seconds earlier from a frenzied knife-torso interaction, leaving nobody to hand out candy to the trick or treaters except the killer, The Executioner, who docilely awaited the police cradling the bloody new-born in his arms. It’s fair to say Sarah has issues with Waterbury, and as her arrival coincides with the start of a spate of copycat Executioner killings, Waterbury has issues with Sarah. And it’s this business that occupies your eyes and ears for the bulk of the 8 episodes. I mean, that was some spoilertastic stuff back there, yeah? But get this…that was only the opening 10 minutes; there’s plenty of unspoiled stuff and, hey, maybe those first 10 minutes I just got spoil all over aren’t all as they initially appear? That is a distinct possibility. Yes it is.

What then unfolds over the televisually paced course of Slasher: The Executioner’s 8 episodes is slashtastically fun stuff. Pretty much everything you expect in a slasher movie happens, because that predictability is part of the fun of a slasher movie. Crucially, however, some stuff you don’t expect to happen in a slasher movie also happens, which is part of the fun of a good slasher movie. A good slasher movie has to both cater to and exceed expectations, and Slasher: the Executioner is a pretty good slasher movie despite its arse-numbing running time. But then only a glutton would gulp it down one go; Slasher: The Executioner is most rewarding when taken episodically; which is kind of why they made it like that, I guess. With a gap between each episode you can ruminate and ratiocinate in an attempt to understand the motivations, unearth the clues and unmask the killer. Although, good luck with that; the identity of the killer may be easy to guess (it’s [Redacted]!) but it’s a lot less easy to back it up with clues and evidence. It’s more a case of “It’s [Redacted]” because it has to be, rather than you have been perceptive enough to amass an evidence trail suitable for a Court of Law. But then slasher maniacs rarely see the inside of a Court of Law, so going with your gut is okay in this context.

The cast though? I mean, you’re going to be spending a lot of time with these people and given the nature of the beast some of them are going to have to surprise you with who they really turn out to be. Happily, everyone in Slasher: The Executioner is far better at this acting lark than the usual cast of a slasher movie. It probably helps that unlike most slasher movies the cast is portraying adults rather than the more usual teenagers. Feeelingzzzz aside, adult life is a lot more complex than teenage life, so there’s a lot more scope for surprise behaviour wise. And adults by definition have lived longer than teenagers so they have an actual past which could, maybe, be full of misdeeds and tragedy. That kind of thing would be pretty helpful were you trying to fill about 8 hours of screentime, yeah? Yeah, it totally would. As Sarah, Katie McGrath is maybe a bit of a milksop but this, to be fair, pays off later with a major change in attitude, and also in her defence she is mostly on the backfoot as surprises and violence tend to single her out. And she certainly rallies herself with an impressively sad ferocity come the bloody climax. Brandon Jay McLaren as her life partner convinces as a man too nice to be true, but who just might come through. The killer is great and clearly having a fun time, but their performance becomes a real humdinger once the reveal hits and the pretence can be dropped (in front of the viewer at least). Lots of actors, lots of performances and all of them are lots of fun. Some are more fun than others, but saying more would splash spoil all over the place. In a town this big there might be more than one mystery, is all i’m saying.

Slasher: The Executioner is overwrought, it’s daft, it’s violent, it’s rarely dull and it successfully stretches your suspension of disbelief like so much Silly Putty. Pretty much a dreamy slasher experience all in all. Of course many a long form TV show comes a cropper when it has to deliver a definite ending. But rest easy, the end of Slasher: The Executioner doesn’t reveal everyone is dead, and, no, it wasn’t all a dream. The stakes are high ending wise; after nearly 8 hours Slasher needed to deliver a faceslap of an ending, and while the mechanics of what happen are hardly brain meltingly original, the psychological darkness of it was a bleak delight. In short the ending to Slasher: The Executioner is a TV win: it doesn’t make you wish you hadn’t bothered. As long as you came expecting a slasher, that is. The clue’s in the title after all.

#UNFOLDER MONSTER FULL#
Louis and would no doubt like to improve upon. Additionally, Dungey also had a career-high five wins during that 2010 season, a career-best total he has matched coming into St. Louis might provide a little more incentive for Dungey considering the last and only time he collected a 450SX Class win inside Edward Jones Dome was in 2010, when he claimed the title as a rookie. The heartbreak experienced by Dungey’s biggest title threat subsequently means he can strategically approach the remaining races, settling for points and a solid result on a night in which a win may not be necessary. Currently, 67 points separate Dungey from Canard, while 10 points sit between Canard and Tomac. The injury will almost certainly remove Canard from contention for the remainder of the season, leaving the battle for the title to come down to Dungey and Tomac. The rider Tomac can overtake is Team Honda HRC’s Canard, who earned no points in Detroit after a crash in the Semi left him out of action with a fractured left arm. Tomac now sits 77 points back on Dungey with five races remaining and is poised to take control of second place in the championship standings with another solid effort in St. Last Saturday, he was able to take advantage of one of his best starts of the season inside Ford Field to challenge Dungey, methodically work his way into the lead and pull away to capture the second win of his career.
#UNFOLDER MONSTER FULL#
Tomac’s first full season of 450SX Class competition has been filled with the highest of highs and some unfortunate lows.
Will Jeremy Martin ascend to the top of the division?.
Can Joey Savatgy parlay his second career podium finish into the first victory of 2015 for Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki?.
Can Musquin bounce back from missing out on the win for just the second time this season to claim his fourth victory and reassert his control in the championship?.
Now that Bogle has captured the first win of his title defense, will he continue to cut into Musquin’s points lead?.
Will up-and-comer Weston Peick break through for the first podium finish of his career?.
Can veteran Chad Reed get back into the podium mix after finishing fourth last weekend?.
With the season-ending injury suffered by Trey Canard, who will step up in his absence to fill the soon-to-be vacant spot amongst the top-three in the championship standings? Perhaps it will be his Team Honda HRC rookie teammate Cole Seely, who currently sits fourth and has back-to-back podium finishes to his credit.
Can Tomac seize the momentum from his win in Detroit and become the second rider to earn back-to-back wins in 2015? It would be the first time Tomac has won consecutive races in his 450SX Class career.
Another win in the Gateway City would put the KTM rider one step closer to the second title of his career, and the first for the manufacturer. Louis came during his championship-winning rookie 450SX Class season in 2010.
Will Dungey continue to protect his points lead and settle for another 450SX Class podium, or will he set a career-best mark with his sixth win of the season?.
Some key things to watch heading into this Saturday night’s race include: Louis’ Edward Jones Dome will host the 13 th race of the 2015 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, on Saturday night. As a result of that distinction, potential rivalries are set to emerge between the top-two riders and teams in the 450SX Class and Eastern Regional 250SX Class standings as St. GEICO Honda is now the second team in 2015 to sweep both the 450SX Class and 250SX Class Main Events in a single evening. (March 24, 2015) – Following a dominant three-race win streak by Red Bull KTM teammates Ryan Dungey and Marvin Musquin, it was the GEICO Honda duo of Eli Tomac and Justin Bogle who stole the spotlight last weekend in Detroit. Dungey and Tomac Top 450SX, While Musquin and Bogle Get Closer in 250SXĪURORA, Ill.

Watch Snarky Puppy play "Tarova" and "Xavi" at the Tiny Desk. More from NPR Music: Tiny Desk Concerts: https://www.npr.org/tinydesk Twitter: https://twitter.com/nprmusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nprmusic Nov. 20, 2019 | Colin Marshall -- Seconds before we hit record, Snarky Puppy's bandleader, Michael League leaned in to ask if he could "do a little crowd work." I suspect he waited until the last second on purpose, but it's been easy to trust this band when they have an idea, judging by the three Grammy Awards they get to dust off at home after every tour run. What resulted was a Tiny Desk first: League divided the audience into two sections, one side clapping out a 3/4 beat and the other half a 4/4 beat, creating a polyrhythm that I'm sure a handful of coworkers didn't feel so confident trying to pull off. But this band pulls you in with simple instruction and a little faith. Snarky Puppy has been a force for a while now, earning the ears of millions for more than a decade. And their secret sauce? A long-simmered recipe of jazz, funk and gospel. The band started as college friends in the jazz program at the University of North Texas back in 2003. But the formative era came a few years later, after League became a part of the gospel scene in Dallas and eventually brought the jazz students to church, where music plays a different role than it does in the classroom. In the pulpit, it's a channel for spiritual healing, a communal experience between players and congregation. As an experiment, League pulled his jazz friends and his gospel bandmates into one ensemble, where the two groups bonded together and established ground-zero for building the sonic identity of Snarky Puppy. Thirteen albums later, you can still hear these gospel and jazz orbits crashing into each other. They're masters of theme and variation, offering anyone with a listening ear a place to grab hold. And people do. They're a band whose lyric-less melodies are still yelled (sung back) to them at their concerts around the world, as a shared catharsis for everyone in the room. He signs up with Gary Jones, Tony DiStefano and Ricky Carmichael as the only riders in history to achieve the champion three-peat. <p style="text-align: center;">Eli Tomac <p>" This is such an unique method to end the weekend, and not something I actually anticipated occurring with one round to go," stated Tomac. "I truthfully didn't even understand I had the champion up until the last lap. I thought that I required one more spot from the guys behind me, so that was a little bit of a surprise. It was good to do the job today. It's tough to beat the first championship, but they're all unique and special in their own methods."<div style="margin-top: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; "> <script> < div design="margin-top: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px;" >( adsbygoogle= window.adsbygoogle|| []width: 1200px"><figcaption>.). push( <hr> <p> ); Eli Tomac Jason Anderson's 4-2 ratings were good enough to end up the day second total, edging out Musquin in third( <p style="text-align: center;">3-3). Marvin Musquin <p>" I had good practices today and the motos got rougher, harder and drier, that made it harder on the body and on the bike. My starts were actually pretty excellent however things took place in both motos that cost me a number of positions early on. In general, I offered my best and we simply require to work a little bit more for those kinds of conditions." <figure style="width: 1920px"><figcaption>Marvin Musquin <hr> <p>While Tomac has finished up the 2019 title, thanks to his 50-point lead in the standings, the fight for runner-up in the champion will head to the last round in Indiana next weekend, with Musquin and Roczen separated by just five-points. <figure style="width: 1200px"><figcaption>Jason Anderson <p>Jason Anderson and Zach Osborne are fourth and 5th respectively ahead of Cooper Webb while Justin Barcia's 6-5 results at Red Bud sees him seventh in the 450cc AMA Pro Motocross Championship standings. <p style="text-align: center;">Justin Barcia<div style="margin-top: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; "> <script> < div design="margin-top: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px;" >( adsbygoogle= window.adsbygoogle|| [].). push( ); "I was riding strong and the bike established was working well for me. I wound up getting a great start in Moto 1, fought near the front and wound up 6th in Moto 1. In the 2nd Moto, I got another solid start. I was battling with( Zach) Osborne and a lot of other guys. I rode my butt off. We made a modification prior to the second Moto and it was the best modification. My starts have been excellent, it was good to have the speed too. I'm now wishing the season wasn't about to be over. It would have been excellent to be on the podium today, but we're taking actions in the right direction." <figure style="width: 1920px"><figcaption>Justin Barcia <hr> <h5 style="text-align: center;">450 Class Overall Results (Moto Complete) <ol> <li>Eli Tomac, Cortez, Colo., Kawasaki (1-1) <li>Jason Anderson, Edgewood, N.M., Husqvarna (4-2) <li>Marvin Musquin, France, KTM (3-3) <li>Ken Roczen, Germany, Honda (2-7) <li>Zach Osborne, Abingdon, Va., Husqvarna (5-4) <li>Justin Barcia, Monroe, N.Y., Yamaha (6-5) <li>Dean Wilson, Scotland, Husqvarna (8-6) <li>Aaron Plessinger, Hamilton, Ohio, Yamaha (9-9) <li>Benny Bloss, Oak Grove, Mo., KTM (7-11) <li>Kyle Cunningham, Willow Park, Texas, Honda (11-8) <h5 style="text-align: center;">450 Class Championship Standings <ol> <li>Eli Tomac, Cortez, Colo., Kawasaki-- 476 <li>Marvin Musquin, France, KTM-- 426 <li>Ken Roczen, Germany, Honda-- 421 <li>Jason Anderson, Edgewood, N.M., Husqvarna-- 376 <li>Zach Osborne, Abingdon, Va., Husqvarna-- 365 <li>Cooper Webb, Newport, N.C., KTM-- 324 <li>Justin Barcia, Monroe, N.Y., Yamaha-- 283 <li>Fredrik Noren, Sweden, Suzuki-- 218 <li>Justin Bogle, Cushing, Okla., KTM-- 210 <li>Blake Baggett, Grand Balcony, Calif., KTM-- 175 <hr> <h2 style="text-align: center;">250 <p>The opening 250 Class moto of the afternoon saw Ty Masterpool capture his 2nd holeshot of the season ahead of McElrath and Kawasaki's Adam Cianciarulo.
