The 2024 Skate Canada International men's SP results and Stephen's protocol.

Before I start this discussion I just want to say this is the 10th season I'm following Stephen but the nervousness doesn't really go away. You never know what you'll get with this guy.

Today Stephen gave us a good skate. He brought the energy necessary for this program, cool but playful. He did what he had to. Coach Lee Barkell seemed pretty pleased with him as well and we love to see that.

There are a few small things to look at like the edge call on the flip, which I feel like we haven't seen since the SP at 2019 JWC, and a few levels. Considering he has not competed since August I think we can cut him some slack. It was a smart decision to do only one quad in the short program. Better to execute more manageable tech content cleanly than to be ambitious and end up with a worse score. Thankfully he didn't pop any jumps.

Stephen's quote in the mixed zone:

This program is very fun and this is probably a short program that I enjoyed the most doing in the past couple years.

I feel like you can tell he enjoys skating this. He's finding his groove.

The fans loved his costume. I would recommend Stephen keep this costume the entire season - the pinstripe suit is a perfect fit. They liked his performance and seeing him smile made them happy. The crowd seemed to be cheering on Stephen as well, filling in that awkward gap while he was waiting for his score with applause. If you haven't watched with the CBC commentary you should check that out as well. Brenda, Carol, and Kurt were quite complimentary.
