The 2023 Grand Prix de France men's FS results, final results, and Stephen's protocol.
So keeping in mind that Stephen had three days of prep coming into this event we will discuss these results, and speak in general about his season.
To start off let's acknowledge that Stephen got two different quads out and two triple Axels done. For some reason he just popped that 3Lz which was costly considering how close the scores were. He is still having multiple pops per free skate which is really hurting his technical score. He also missed a combination for the second straight event. He did well to hang onto the Euler combination. He also got another level 4 step sequence, which is great. The starting 4T was really nice. He should definitely consider just doing a 4T3T in the FS as well, like he is in the SP. It would mean less pressure for him to get the 4S in combo, and maybe that would keep him from popping it. He could do a solo 4T instead of trying two 4S and popping one or both.
Someone was saying Stephen needs to work on everything. His jump consistency, his GOEs, his PCS. He's popping jumps at every event. He has had some of the lowest PCS scores of the field in his two events. Canadian judges give him even lower PCS scores than he gets internationally so it's looking dire. Even if he skates clean in terms of jumps his PCS score is going to have him around at least 20-30 points back of the top men (this problem is not exclusive to him). He has been relying on his choreographers to improve his PCS, but the top men work with the same choreographers as him. That's not it. The question that arises next from the fans is that - does Stephen want to skate? They get the sense he does not care to improve because his heart is not in this sport, that he is only being forced to do it. Which is concerning, but how are we to know what's really going on with him?
For what it's worth I think Stephen still wishes to skate, it's just not as enjoyable for him anymore. Nobody puts their body through the hell of training these jumps without a desire to achieve something, and he still has that desire. His environment is just not allowing him to produce the results he wants and that's demoralizing. I mean he has gone to two major international events in 2023 without a coach - WTT and now Grand Prix de France. I am not sure why Skate Canada is ok with this, but this is not going to help him. I'm grateful Benoit was with him, and he could get a better result with him than he had at Skate America, but it's kind of ridiculous that a top Canadian skater is going to events without a coach. I would not find this acceptable for any skater, let alone Stephen who really needs the guidance and support of a coach.
You have to wonder sometimes what level Stephen would be at with a coaching team that helped him thrive like when he was younger because his potential is so high. At this event 2/3 of the guys who competed at 2018 JGPF were competing, and the guy who finished 4th back then won the event with a score of 300+ to put things in perspective. But you can't live in the past or in a world of imagination.
Looking on the bright side Stephen finishes this GP season with a higher score than he put out all of last season and he also picked up some points and moved up to 31st in the World Standings. He will probably go down a bit by year's end but hopefully he's still top 40. He also picked up a new personal best tech score for the SP. And seventh in this field is a respectable finish for a guy who found out he was going to compete a week before.
I hope Stephen is able to return to Granite Club and get some training in before Nationals during UCI's winter break. Otherwise I am really not sure how Nationals will go for him. He'll be skating 16th in the SP there. You can view the schedule here. The media is going to be focusing on the men's event with the unpredictability and the possibility for a new National Champion so it's going to be a little bit of a circus but I'm sure these guys will survive.
Thanks for your hard work Stephen and for doing your best to improve your results. Keep your head up, stay healthy, and keep going into 2024.

Because I Bring Value
PROMPT: Practical Protocol Class attended on Oct. 3, 2023
I attended a class of the BOE last night called Practical Protocol. And to be real, I had so many thoughts, questions, and discomforts upon leaving that class.
Some of what was covered was right in line with my perspective and other parts of it were like … OK, but why are you doing it that way?
It wasn't explained with the level of nuance that I wanted (nor could it have been in a two hour time slot). So rather than turning inward to examine all the things myself, I turned to MzRhythm and we discussed all the points in my notes where I had written a (?) alongside. It was honestly the best class we've attended in a long time in terms of giving us thing to talk about. So thank you to all involved.
In this journal entry, I am diverging from the prompts I've been writing on and expounding upon the class and our personal post-class discussion.
I had a bit of an advantage going into the class, because when asked for our definitions on protocol at the beginning, MzRhythm raised her hand and gave her definition early on: Protocol is the ritualization of a power exchange relationship. However, the presenter definition was: Protocol is a dynamic with explicit expectations negotiated mutually and executed without hesitation or objection. So right there, from the outset, was a mismatch in what I was expecting and the language with which the class was framed. I really appreciate that she spoke up.
The key mismatch here being her definition (and mine, as well) involves the protocol being the set of things you do in a dynamic to support the dynamic through action. The presenters' definition involves the protocol being the dynamic itself. I think.
This acknowledgement of a mismatch allowed me to accept that there would be a discrepancy in my mind and that's OK. It also showed me ways that I can prepare for classes in topics that I have already formed impressions about, which would help with cognitive dissonance in the future.
Anyway, beyond that, there were many parts that we discussed, but there is part that I am struggling to work through. The paired questions:
Why do you deserve your submissive's submission?
Why do you deserve your Dominant's guidance and leadership?
Here, I took exception to the word "deserve." My gut reaction is "it's not about deserving, it's about mutual agreement and consent." But when discussing it with MzRhythm, she said the answer to both is "Because I bring value." (My answer was, "I don't deserve anyone's anything," for the record.)
So, I think in order to fathom her answer, I need to break down the difference between being valuable as a person and bringing value as a partner for myself. In essence, what do I bring to the table as a partner is more important to this conversation than justifying my existence.
All people have inherent value as human beings and should be treated with equal rights and dignity. Existing, however, is not enough to 'deserve' to be part of a relationship. And I think that is where I got hung up on the word deserve.
That said, not all people have brought value to our individual lives and therefore are not loved by us, beyond our inherent, generalized love for every living person. If I have an extra ticket to a concert, I'm going to first offer it to my wife, then my boyfriend, then to friends in some sense of order. Because those people have brought value to my life in the past and this concert offers us a chance to build new memories and experiences together. None of them inherently deserve to go to the concert more than anyone else. And honestly, there is a gamble involved here: Who do I think will bring the most value to my experience?
Some of that is determined by track record so far, the other person's interest in the thing I want to do, and by the potential for future enjoyment together. So circling back to the questions, why do you deserve? I appreciate the nuance in MzRhythm's response "Because I bring value.
"It's not so much about deserving, but about showing through a track record of consistency and attentiveness that the two of you are a good fit and have matched expectations of one another. It's about showing that you will show up, participate, and display care … actively. Because passive participation isn't as fulfilling, in most cases.
I keep wanting to change the phrasing to "what have you done to earn" but there is no way to earn someone's love. That is a thing that I have been struggling with for a long time. I have had someone else living in my head for a long telling me that everyone should decide every single day that they want to be in a given relationship.  But that's not sustainable and I see that now. You see, people are not robots. People have down days, they have moody days, they have upbeat days. If you are deciding on a down day that your partner's moody day is too much to continue a relationship with a decade of more good than bad, I would argue that something is more wrong than your partner's one day of moodiness. You're also shortchanging yourself and any potential partners who may want to come into your life.
I committed, when I gave MzRhythm a dragon and a ring, that I was in this thing, forever. And she did the same. We deserve each other because we committed to each other and we continue to show up in more good ways than bad for each other.
That's not to say that at the outset it isn't a good call to check people's actions and words against your intuition. But I am saying that it's important to let people's track records inform some of the security that is found in a relationship, power exchange or otherwise.
I deserve MzRhythm's guidance and leadership because I bring value and am committed to continuing to do so. She deserves my submission because she brings value and is committed to continuing to do so.

I am currently developing a strategy to help with Unable To Initiate Desired Task (exec dysfunction or task avoidance or idk one of its fifteen different names), and it’s not perfect by any means but I’m genuinely so excited that I have to share
Previous understanding of Wanting To Do A Task But Unable To
Step 1) want to do a task
Step 2) do the task
New understanding of it:
Step 1) want to do a task
Step 2) decide the task is worth doing and decide to try to do it
Step 3) -cease current task- either by Wrapping It Up to stop, or by preparing to Pause it by noting a) what your goal with the current task is b) the current thing you’re doing to achieve the goal and c) the next step in your process
Step 4) You are now Inactive
Step 5) don’t get stuck doing nothing??? (still fine-tuning this lol)
Step 6) Seek External Stimuli. Go to the room the task is in, or approach it with the intent and goal of “I will simply exist nearer to my task.”
Step 6a) External Stimuli is interesting enough that you find yourself spontaneous doing the task with virtually 0 effort
-or-
Step 7) If you’re still stuck try imaging the initial step, just put on a video in your head of you starting the task and doing the first step; if this still doesn’t work, come up with a very minimal outline for the other steps needed to complete the task
Step 7a) the combination of being Near The Task, and Visualizing Doing The Task, is about 80% effective at working!! Step 5 is tricky but I’ll work on it more >:3
Edit: it is now spring 2023. I found this in my drafts, from summer 2022, and it is still highly useful as a strategy. I often try to solve issues using this tool, either by using it as described, or by using it as a template and modifying it so it works better on a specific situation. So i shall publish it, in case it helps someone else :3

Can a Migraine Pattern be Altered with Bodywork? Migraines are often accompanied and exacerbated by digestive disturbance, vertigo and hypersensitivity to a number of external stresses such as barometric pressure, light, dehydration, caffeine, chocolate or just plain stress. In my experience it’s usually a combination. Several new clients came in this week with serious migraine issues; one with disabling and depressing vertigo. At my clinic we’ve had amazing success working with Migraine and Vertigo. Here’s what I’ve found to be universal in Migraine sufferers… Correcting the Imbalances Contributing to Migraines Each of them has a functional imbalance in the rotator muscles at the top of the neck. The sub-occipitals: Obliquus Capitis Superior and Inferior and the Splenius and Rectus Capitus are out of balance functionally. The neck cannot turn horizontally on the axis of the spine. The Cranium is tipped back on one side. Even when a CS Therapist can induce the muscles of the Sub-Occipitals and the back of the head to let go, the lack of structural integrity and function among these muscles results in a disorienting lack of stability that is deeply disturbing to the nervous system and in one such client induced a migraine that lasted for 4 days after the CST treatment. Our orienting functions are intimately interwoven with the muscles at the top of the neck. To top it all off, the OCS transits across the space where the Vagus Nerve descends from the Cranium. When OCS is tight, it puts pressure on the Vagus nerve, suppressing its signals to the viscera. When our Vagus nerve is suppressed our digestion is suppressed. We no longer absorb the water we are drinking. We become dehydrated. We are drinking lots of water but our lips are chapped. We may develop respiratory distress as our immune responses are suppressed and we become vulnerable to airborne or food borne bacteria.Does this sound familiar? Correcting this imbalance in functional rotation is what NeuroMuscular Reprogramming does. --- Learn how to correct this imbalance and much more in our upcoming NeuroMuscular Reprogramming courses. You may have seen this upper cervical group before, but IMAGINE if the vagus nerve got caught in the excessive pressure elicited by the hypertonicity of the sub-occipitals putting pressure on it and signaling the sympathetic arousal.

people in the blockchain world talk about “ossified protocols” a lot, but why is that an apt metaphor? What about protocols is, or can become, bone-like? I think it has to do with how protocols exist in time.
we can’t predict most things about the future, but some things we can predict with an eerie amount of confident precision. For example, I am pretty confident that this time 5 years from now, whether or not the US exists as a country, and whether or not zombies or aliens have taken over, we’ll still be driving on the right-hand side of the road on this continent and using 110V electricity. That’s because road rules constitute a pretty ossified protocol and are part of the bones of time. The electric grid is built around a set of standards and protocols and is also part of the bones of time. These social realities seem to have a preternatural stability across the fan of possible futures, and a kind of inflexible hardness we normally associate with the natural laws of physics.
One of the reasons the pandemic felt like such a dramatic disruption of life was that several foundational protocols of life, like shaking hands and smiling, got broken.
Protocols create artificial “vertebrate” time out of natural “invertebrate” time.
The same lens can be applied to the past. We structure our understanding of the past in terms of bone-like procedural social realities that don’t change easily, and induce a certain hard-edged quality in event streams. We have histories of the United States, China, the Catholic Church, and railroad technologies in large part because those entities enjoy an ontological stability that emerges out of the protocols defining their ossified social realities.
Protocols are a bit like laws of nature in this regard: defined by stable symmetries and conservation principles that limit the space of possible futures and pasts.
That they are the product of social contrivance and technological artifice doesn’t really matter. What matters is that they endure for long periods while changing slowly or not at all. They may be made-up and arbitrary, but they create persistent laws of social reality.

2023 Autumn Classic International FS results, final results, and Stephen's protocol.
Ok this is really late my apologies.
Let's start with that costume. I was hoping to see Stephen in blue since he revealed it's his favourite colour. Have been wanting to see him in something ombré forever. I was actually telling my mom yesterday I wish he'd wear ombré as it would suit him so well. To get both in one costume? I was screaming. Thank you to whoever designed that.
Now the technical. First of all, big props to Stephen for not letting those early mistakes get to him. He held it together and kept going, and that is so important for his progress as an athlete. Full respect for that. In terms of that content I was surprised to see his Lutz come back from its exile. It was a nice one, and I think nailing that helped settle him down after the first fall.
The 4S in the second half looked good, and that 3F3A sequence was amazing. That's smart thinking, to put two of his best jumps together like that. And finally we have some variety in jump layout. He must have grown tired of the layouts he'd been doing for the past four years. Level 4 spins are always welcome. The choreography looks interesting and so different from last season. The crowd was clapping along to his step sequence, which is great. It was a level 2 but I'm sure with mileage it will improve.
It was the first time out with this program and it wasn't bad at all plus he managed to get a medal so I'll take that. I haven't had time to go through comments but what little I have seen suggests people like this program. Also a strange little fact: this is Stephen's first time winning bronze at an event. He did win a small bronze for the FS at 2019 Junior Worlds, but he's only ever won gold or silver otherwise. This is his first international senior medal and I'm just proud of him for picking himself up after last season and coming out here and making a statement. If you were writing him off after last season you should think twice.
Also shout out to the two MVPs with Stephen - Bruce and coach Lee Barkell. Bruce went to Montreal to watch Stephen and cheer him on, and has been supporting him online as well. I think you can even hear him in the crowd, and I'm sure his support buoyed Stephen. As I've stated previously Stephen's best skates in the past couple of years have come with Lee by his side. Stephen is a Californian now, but I hope he can continue to work with Lee and become more successful under his (occasional) tutelage.
Back in January 2022 when Stephen was forced to withdraw from Nationals I was going through it but was encouraged by the kind words of a coach (an acquaintance) who reassured me Stephen would be back. They were letting me know that Stephen would be selected for Junior Worlds without stating it outright, but I didn't comprehend that in my state of mind. I just calmed myself down by thinking about when he'd be back. At that time I told myself he would be here for 2022 SCI, 2023 Nationals, and also 2023 ACI. I'm glad to see that all worked out without any more withdrawals. Let's manifest more good things.
Stephen has now done a JGP, JGP Final, Grand Prix, and Challenger Series event within Canada. He's just got one international left to do here...and that's enough from me. :)
Way to go Stephen! Congratulations and looking forward to seeing more.

Introduction
Tumblr media
Good day/afternoon/evening,
I’m here for a small introduction on why I started this blog and who I am.
Why start a blog?
Well, I’d first like to reconnect with my passion for writing!
Second, I know how it feels to go through articles and websites just to find that specific protocol for your experiment. Sometimes it doesn’t just take hours, it takes days, and you’ll be left feeling more lost than ever.
This blog should be for those who are looking for a THIS-COULD-MAYBE-BE-IT moment. I’m not saying these protocols are the one and only steps you should be taking, but they worked for me :)
Lastly, it would be nice to have people either commenting or reposting the protocols with the special twist that works for them!
Science should be sharable, cause most of us just want to learn and understand.
       2.  Who are you?
I’m currently a first year PhD student studying biomedical science. This field is my passion, yet the stress is literally sucking the life out of me.
Raccoon is the name I gave myself because...food is life, and the bed is my one and only true love... I have dark dark circles under my eyes, ok? If I don’t conceal them, my professor would think that I’m either sick or ready to transfer to the afterlife (one of them is true tho).
Things I’ll be posting:
Biomedical-related protocols
How my weekly schedule would look like on a chill/loaded week
Articles that I find interesting
Laboratory life
Mental health considerations
etc...
IMPORTANT NOTICE: I’m not always right, but I’ll always be open for discussions!
So much to learn, infinite time :)
