Reading Origins, by Lewis Dartnell. I loved his other book, The Knowledge, where he gives an overview of some of the technologies that make civilization work. This one is about how stuff like plate tectonics influences human evolution. It made me finally look up an explanation of Milankovitch cycles (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iA788usYNWA) so so far it's been worth it. I'm going to summarize what I learnt so far in an effort not to completely forget everything immediately
His thesis so far is that, for a confluence of reasons tracing back to plate tectonics, the climate in the Afar region in east Africa was unstable enough, on short enough timescales, to make getting smarter (and therefore better able to adapt to changing conditions) a useful evolutionary strategy. The confluence of reasons is certain tectonic movements making the climate in east africa drier through a variety of mechanisms, plus the rising up of the mantle (for?? reasons???) under east africa causing the crust in east africa to begin to tear apart, creating a valley surounded by high walls that block the moisture in the air from getting in.
Then there's a third thing about the Milankovitch cycles. What the book says is that, during the 200000-year periods when the earth orbit is at maximum eccentricity, the precession cycle (which has a period of 25000 years) has a huge effect on the climate/water availability of east Africa in particular for geography reasons. 25000 years seems like pretty long, but i guess not long enough for evolution? The main paper cited (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0277379114002418) says that this is because, since the orbital cycles are sinusoidal, most of the variation is concentrated in the short periods of upswing and downswing, which i guess explains that.
Watching This weekend I finally watched this documentary (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT2ZQJlNwkc), where a guy infiltrates an ultra catholic cult. This guy is held up as some sort of hard-hitting genius investigator but this was pretty underwhelming. Most of it is a bunch of "shocking: this cult utilizes standard cult tactics to control its members". There's one point at the start where, after introducing himself using a fake name, he overhears the cult people talking about him using his real name, which sounds like it could turn pretty dark, but then nothing about that is ever mentioned again. Cults are just not very interesting i guess One thing I will say in his favor is I didn't know he was involved in this hilarious moment of tv https://youtu.be/DdDtrxc2aBE?t=1379 Also in a weird tie-in with the reading section, he has two videos where he goes on a trip to the Afar region, for unclear reasons. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjvNi7mvWGQ&list=PLnfVZ4ANQFwfxysyMPMP26F6EdbBvAQmy)
Exercising I tried an aerial yoga class, mostly I spent the class feeling like i wasn't scared enough by the fact that i was hanging perfectly upside down, which was terrifying. I plan to try again when the current covid wave subsides a little
Listening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvz97-lNPH8 Bzrp sessions are usually not my style at all, i hate the endless succession of dudes that sing in the exact same slurred voice, someone make a welcome to my kitchen vine but for trapper dudes please. But I love this one. The lyrics are amazing, her stage presence is so good
Playing nothing
Making I tried some watercolor, using some kuretake watercolor brushes. Only thing i can say is that color is really hard, and I should practice more. Also I made a shitty origami kaleidocycle because I saw it on this video https://youtu.be/ThwuT3_AG6w?t=464, and it surprisingly kinda works

Apparently this is a thing called a flextangle or kaleidocycle!
The gif is too short to show the fourth side, which is Marvel fabric, but it’s surprisingly difficult to rotate a flextangle one handed while trying to stay in the center of the shot lol

2020 nov 23 // Some paper play! I stumbled on this website: https://hattifant.com/papercraft-kaleidocycle-spring/ and got intrigued!
This little paper craft, Flextangle, looks so elaborate and I was fascinated of how you can flip and turn it, check it out:

The website offers a template for free, which I of course downloaded, and after I watched their video tutorial I realised how easy it actually was to assemble. A very fun little toy, I’ve tried once with the already decorated template. But will print the empty one, so I can decorate it myself and try again 😋
