Exploring Art, Style, and Music: The World of Mandula
In the vibrant tapestry of creativity, few names resonate as profoundly as Mandula. Let’s delve into the captivating realms where art, style, and music converge.
1. Mandula: The Artistic Visionary
Contemporary Artists from Hawaii
The Hawaiian Islands harbor a tight-knit artistic community, and Mandula stands out as a luminary. Here are some remarkable contemporary artists to watch:
Wooden Wave: Led by the dynamic duo Matt and Roxy Ortiz, Wooden Wave infuses whimsy into their hand-drawn murals and illustrations. Picture a treehouse shaped like Darth Vader or a bakery on an outrigger canoe—each piece celebrates draftsmanship and imagination. Their work has graced walls from Hawaii to the Smithsonian Arts and Industries Museum.
Matthew Tapia: Known for his postcard-perfect lettering at Waikiki’s Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club, Matthew’s designs have adorned magazines, clothing brands, and street murals. His iconic work—the Instagram-famous Surfjack pool—captures the essence of island life.
Kalani Pe’a: A Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, Kalani Pe’a’s debut album E Walea enchanted hearts worldwide. His soulful melodies blend Hawaiian roots with contemporary flair.
Mark Kushimi: This Honolulu-based photographer and designer finds beauty in quiet, undisturbed scenes. His series “Forever Drowning” meditates on the ocean, a realm with its own sense of time and space.
Linda Bachrach: Linda’s delicate watercolors transport us to a nostalgic world of cats. Inspired by Asian aesthetics, her vibrant artwork graces postcards, ceramic pendants, and matte prints.
Kamea Hadar: A globetrotting artist, Kamea’s work bridges cultures. His studies in Paris, Madrid, and Tel Aviv infuse his Hawaiian scenes with a global perspective.
2. Hawaiian Style: Where Nature Meets Expression
Hawaii’s lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage inspire a unique style:
Tropical Motifs: Think palm fronds, hibiscus blooms, and sun-kissed beaches. Hawaiian style embraces vibrant colors and breezy silhouettes.
Ancient Traditions: Fiber artist Marques Hanalei Marzan weaves contemporary designs with ancient techniques. His work honors the artistic customs of his ancestors, bridging past and present.
Symbolism: From lotus motifs to Indian mandalas, Hawaiian jewelry and accessories carry deep symbolism. Mandula crafts unique pieces—pendants, rings, cuffs, and medallions—that resonate with tradition.
3. Harmonizing Melodies: Mandula the Music Artist
Mandula’s sonic journey transcends boundaries:
“Riszáld”: Collaborating with Goore, Mandula weaves hypnotic beats and raw lyrics. The video adds visual magic to this mesmerizing track.
“Pura Vida”: Tieri’s beat meets Mandula’s soulful voice, evoking carefree days and ocean breezes. The sun-drenched visuals capture the essence of island living.
“Mélyben”: Introspection finds expression in Mandula’s lyrics, beautifully complemented by qnz’s visuals. Dive into the depths of emotion.
MANDULA: Where tradition meets innovation, where brushstrokes harmonize with melodies. Explore, immerse, and celebrate the creative spirit. 🌺🎨🎶

The Largest Portrait in Hawaii’s History.
Honolulu, Hawaii — Internationally renowned artist and friend of Supersonic Art Kamea Hadar just completed a 14-story portrait of the Hawaiian Goddess of the Moon, Hina - The largest portrait in the state’s history (and arguably the most beautiful).
“It was inspired by the sacred canoe Hokulea and its historic journey around the earth named ‘Malama Honua’ which translates to ‘Caring for Our Island Earth’” explains Hadar of the portrait that faces outwards towards Pearl Harbor.  “The voyage not only pushes the boundaries of non-instrumental navigation (using only the sun, waves, winds, stars, birds, etc to navigate) but, also, was a voyage of spreading awareness of taking care of our precious earth and its natural resources.  I did a series of projects honoring Hokulea when she left on Malama Honua and I wanted the piece to be a guiding light for Hokulea's return, [finishing it] only a few weeks before they arrived safely home after more than three years at sea.”
Take an extended look at the epic mural’s creation along with a short video on the project below:

The Multi Skills of Kamea Hadar
Kamea Hadar grew up in the worlds of his Japanese/Korean mother and Israeli father. He began studying drawing and painting from a young age. As a child he took classes at the Honolulu Art Academy and University of Hawaii; and spent periods living, studying and creating at the Sorbonne in Paris, University of St. Louis in Madrid and the University of Tel Aviv, Israel. He currently resides in Honolulu, HI and is the youngest board member of the Hawaii Arts Alliance (a member of the National Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network), co-lead director of POW! WOW! and designer/artistic director of Utopium, home of POW! WOW! Hawaii. Although Kamea’s work is based in traditional portraiture it has evolved off of the canvas to large scale murals and installations that can be found in cities around the world.

I volunteered a couple of weeks ago at POW! WOW! HAWAII! 2017, a street art festival in the heart of Kakaako. Its such an amazing event that has made its mark on cities all over the country and world! There are murals, art lectures, music, gallery shows and all around art community take over. (In times where art education and general art awareness gets shoved to the side, sometimes painting the city is what it takes to remind people that art exists, its important, and we need it.)
I met so many incredible artists, made lots of new friends, learned lots of new tricks, scrubbed lots of paint buckets, took lots of water bottles to heat exhausted artists, became a heat exhausted artist.. came home dirty and sweaty every night and equally inspired and motivated to create more art. It felt like summer camp -or maybe it was The Dracula’s mural of the campfire.. Whatever it was, I cannot wait to be a part of it again next year.
(Maybe I’ll get to paint my own wall?😈)

Maui Brewing Company announces the opening of their 4th location, now in the Lau Hala Shops in Kailua
Tumblr media
Press Release
Kihei, Hawaii ... Maui Brewing Company opened its second Oahu restaurant on January 5th, 2019 at the Lau Hala Shops, a new retail center in Kailua located at the former Macy’s building. The 6,500 square-foot restaurant brings brewery-to-table dining to life and continues to build upon the innovative, independent spirit of its craft brewing heritage.
The open-air, family-friendly restaurant features indoor and outdoor dining and over 20 craft beers on tap.
“Several of our partners call Kailua home,” says Chris Thibaut, CEO of restaurants at Maui Brewing Company, “so we’re honored to be able to open a restaurant here, amongst such a tight knit community. The craft beer way of life is all about that feeling of community and collaboration, and we couldn’t be more excited to apply those passions in our Kailua location.”
“I love that the beauty of Kailua is found not only in its beaches and landscapes, but also by the community’s commitment to each other and to supporting local,” said Garrett Marrero, Founder of Maui Brewing Company. “As a fiercely local company, we connect to that feeling and are looking forward to all of the good times (and craft beers!) we’ll share as neighbors in the Kailua community.”
The menu at the new restaurant was designed by Angela Terry, Maui Brewing Company Menu Director, and is inspired by both island and brewpub favorites. Critically acclaimed chef, Terry Lynch serves as executive chef at Maui Brewing Company, where each dish features items from local, master craftsman as well as in-house, made from scratch elements that emphasize fresh, local ingredients. Executive Chef Lynch has travelled, trained and worked around the world and was most recently an executive chef and partner in the Lettuce Entertain You restaurant group and a restaurant consultant.
The beer list for Maui Brewing Company’s Kailua restaurant includes its flagship line-up of beers: Bikini Blonde Lager, Big Swell IPA, Pineapple Mana Wheat, Coconut Hiwa Porter, Double Overhead Double IPA, and Pau Hana Pilsner – as well as limited release beers like Lilikoi Saison, Pueo Pale Ale, POG IPA, and Shoots Brut.  Comrade Crafts – beers made by other craft breweries – including varieties that are not available on draft anywhere else on island, are also featured at this location. All of the Maui Brewing Company beers offered on tap will be available for purchase in growlers and crowlers, which can be enjoyed responsibly outside of the restaurant. This year MBC will also expand its natural soda offerings, and add distilled spirits and canned craft cocktails to the brand.
Maui Brewing Company worked with award-winning WCIT architecture to create a dining experience that is enhanced by a craft industrial design that incorporates both the craft-beer heritage as well as the rich history and landscape of Kailua. The restaurant features two murals by renowned local artist Kamea Hadar.
Maui Brewing Co. Kailua features daily live music and is open from 11 am to 11 pm, with Happy Hour from 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm.

Honolulu, Hawaii-based artist Kamea Hadar has lost count of how many murals he's painted in his career -- his best guess is at least 50 over the past decade.
He's painted a larger-than-life portrait of former US president Barack Obama on the side of a Honolulu law firm and wrapped a Lamborghini with vinyl of his floral art. He once spent two months painting on an upside-down site when the owner of Honolulu's Vintage Cave Café wanted him to paint his arched ceiling "like Michelangelo," Hadar recalled in a phone interview.
But for four weeks from October to November, Hadar painted a 12-story building on the corner of South King and Pensacola Streets in Honolulu, for his most intricate and largest project yet by square footage. (His tallest is 15 stories.)
At 155 feet tall and 60 feet wide, Hadar's mural pays homage to the "ambassadors of aloha" -- surfing champions Carissa Moore and Duke Kahanamoku, who are each record-setters in their respective generations.

A Lifetime of Art
A decade of celebration, but a lifetime of art. As mentioned before, POW! WOW! Worldwide is a global network of artists that celebrate culture, music, and art.
Their name, POW! WOW!, was created with two things: comic book punches and Native American culture. The word “pow” symbolizes a punch in the face, and according to Jasper Wong, founder of POW! WOW!, art is similar to a punch in the face. POW! WOW!, in Native American culture, is a celebration of culture through song, dance, etc. - a fitting name for its purpose.
youtube
POW! WOW! Worldwide held their first event in a small gallery with few artists in Hong Kong. The following year, Jasper Wong collaborated with Kamea Hadar, now co-director of POW! WOW! Hawaii, to host Hawaii’s POW! WOW! event. On the last night of their event, the artists started painting on the walls, out of nowhere, and that’s how POW! WOW! accidentally hosted mural festivals.
How many POW! WOW! logos did you see in this post?

Street artist Kamea Hadar painted “Moon Hina”, his largest mural to date, a depiction of the Hawaiian Goddess of the moon, Hina, on the makai side of the Halawa View Apartments. The tower features a 165 foot tall depiction of Hina, the state’s largest portrait ever painted which is inspired by Hokulea and Malama Honua, the around-the-world voyage.
