Artist Spotlight: Kamea Hadar

While driving west on H201, have you ever noticed a mural off of Lunalilo Street? A gorgeous Hawaiian woman is painted on the side of Kewalo Apartments. Her name is Mahina (left image) and she was named by the artist, Kamea Hadar. Kamea Hadar, originally from Niu Valley, is a local artist well-known for his portraits and murals. 

Kamea Hadar has been creating art from a young age, and his parents supported him by hiring tutors and constantly involving him in projects. Growing up, Hadar took art courses at the Honolulu Art Academy and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Occasionally, he would live, study and create at school in Madrid and Israel. He primarily did portraits, but his art has evolved into murals. 

Hadar’s murals is featured on walls around the world. On O’ahu, he has several murals in Kaka’ako and has set the state’s record of the largest portrait painted. If you are interested in viewing his murals, you can check his website. A little fun fact, Hadar has painted every album cover for the popular band, The Green. 

Currently, Hadar resides in Honolulu, as a loving husband and father to two kids. Hadar is also the co-director of POW! WOW! Hadar said in an interview, “I can’t remember a time where I was not creating art.” He is truly an artist at heart.

His ambition to continuously create and beautify his community and others is truly admirable.

Well it has been several days since Pow! Wow! Hawaii has been over, and I must say that it was truly an amazing experience. I want to start by thanking @mrjasperwong , @kameahadar , and @pro_gress for putting on such fantastic event. Congratulations on hitting 10 years! There are so many people to thank as well. Craig you are the man and even still I saw you yesterday and you were still going! @daybydaykristin and all the other volunteers thanks for always making sure the artists were taken care of. 🤙🏽✨My new buddy Ryan who worked effortlessly to make sure I wasn’t electrocuted⚡️⚡️ ( long story ). My main man @alohabohs 👑 you came through for me on so many levels and I am truly grateful for you my brother! Of course my wife Kaori for pushing and believing in me And bringing down food with Cindy to feed us animals! 😂 Thank you to everyone who stopped by even if I missed you I know our paths will cross again. And all those who came to bring me water, coffee, food, etc. The list goes on and on. Get Waves, a hand-painted series by MelonJames, creates the idea that we all are individual waves that are part of the larger ocean. This collection of waves, as a whole, symbolizes the greater ocean where all waves belong.
