What do you think of Mike and Eleven's kissing this season? Personally I felt it was sforced and disturbing and it made me kind of uncomfortable. Also the way they made them hold each other in some scenes looked too "adult" (and fake). I don't understand how they can be comfortable with this kind of things and then when it comes to Will being explicitly gay both the writers and the audience suddenly it's too much to say it clearly?
I didn’t really want to think too much about their kissing since, you know, I’m a grown man who shouldn’t be thinking about teenagers kissing. I think that may have sort of been the point, though. When they have their little makeout scene, we are sort of forced to watch as it begins with little warning. I think we’re supposed to be as uncomfortable as Hopper was. It’s kinda age-typical, but, as Hopper would later say, they are constantly together. They’re clinging to each other with obsession and possessiveness. Mike and El rushed into a relationship, but don’t really have anything in common and never really just talk . Their relationship isn’t portrayed as a healthy one like Nancy has with Jonathan. It’s not portrayed as playful like with Lucas and Max. It’s actually more like Karen and Ted, who got together because it seemed like a good idea and now are stuck. Nancy managed to escape that same trap when she broke up with Steve, whom she really only dated because of the status (probably didn’t hurt that he’s attractive either).
The writers were focused on showing the party in puberty and all the change that goes along with it. El knows little about typical teenage development outside of what Mike or TV may have told her. I can’t really see Hopper being able to give her “the talk” either. Mike has to rely on his friends (mostly Lucas), TV, and maybe what he’s seen with his sister and Steve/Jonathan to know what’s “normal” relationship behavior. Both El and Mike are playing a part, which is why none of it seems genuine or natural. They care about each other, that’s not a question, but the romance looks forced because it is forced.
This is really because neither of them really know who they are yet. They’re at that stage of their life where they need to reconcile who they are and their values with who their parents, peers, and society want them to be. It can be a long process (Steve may have only just this season worked his way through it), and they’re only at the beginning. Their relationship is the result of Mike doing what he feels he’s supposed to do with a girl he likes, and El following Mike’s lead. By the end of the season, both of them seem like they may have made some progress. Mike seems more comfortable, and more like himself. El seems more self-assured and has interpersonal relationships beyond Mike. Consequently, this may be why they don’t seem to be on the same page with the kiss at the end.
Will’s situation is a bit different. He’s feeling increasingly isolated, and he likely doesn’t understand his own situation beyond himself being different from his friends. He (and Mike) clearly realizes that he doesn’t like girls, but, as far as he knows, he just isn’t there yet. Yes, he likely has feelings for Mike, but back then it would be very difficult for someone like Will to connect that to being gay, let alone coming to terms with such an idea. That’s a hard thing to explicitly show on screen, but, if we look closely, we can see how uncomfortable he is when Mike and El have a moment. This might not mean anything, except he doesn’t get like that when Max and Lucas are together, or when Dustin fawns over Suzie. The writers can’t say that Will is gay and/or likes Mike until Will himself can say it.
So, we circle back to the theme of puberty. Will is going through it as well, but, as with many, many LGBT teens, at least at that time, he is struggling with his changes in a way his friends aren’t. Puberty is hard for a lot of kids, but LGBT kids have a different experience. It’s easy for him to conflate his feelings for Mike with the friendship he already has with him. D&D is important to him because it was something he’d do with Mike without the girls. He may or may not wonder why it bothers him so much that Mike likes girls, but not Lucas or Dustin. His progress through the identity vs role confusion stage of development will require him to confront his feelings for Mike (and boys in general). Back then, it wouldn’t be unusual for LGBT teens to conform to societal standards, but Will has a much more supportive family than most small town boys.
Ultimately, we wouldn’t want to force Will to confront his feelings just so we can feel vindicated as savvy viewers. This has to be a journey and process for Will, which I’m sure will be depicted through further metaphors in the main story (just as the monster in S3 represented puberty). I suspect we’ll see progress for Will, though the means through which that happens likely won’t be pleasant. Realizing he’s gay could be very traumatic for him given the treatment he’s received from his father and bullies. I came of age in the early-mid 90s, and I have the benefit of the internet, but I was still terrified with the realization that I wasn’t “normal.” As horrible as it is to let Will feel pain, we owe it to all of us who went through this to show the experience for what it is. I just hope he finds peace and happiness at the end of the road.

i got a lot to say about s3
okay so i enjoyed this season, but i didn’t really like it. it left me really unsatisfied. i watched the first three episodes on thursday and i loved them, but the episodes on friday just weren’t as intriguing to me. i’m not sure what it was. maybe just being really excited on thursday?
i think it could be how will was sidelined after the first few episodes. i love him with all my heart and just want him to be happy, so watching him be sad and unloved hurt me and there was no real resolution to his storyline. after he destroyed castle byers he was just there to say he’s here which... well sucked
as for hopper, i really disliked him this season. he was just mean and bumbling and unlikable imo. i wasn’t rooting for him and joyce like i usually am and the only reason i was sad about his death was for how it affected eleven and joyce.
billy was much more likable in s3 while being the host than his true s2 personality. billy sacrificing himself for el felt so ooc and i am just going to assume that he truly does feel remorse for killing all those people and more out of self hatred than wanting to protect eleven. also max caring for billy so much felt odd. that is her step brother so i’m sure she does care for him on some level and didn’t want him to die, but the amount of compassion she had felt wrong considering their interactions in s2
steve and robin!! they’re not meant to associate with one another, but they end up becoming bffs and accepting each other wholeheartedly. it just warms my heart. steve’s arc about popularity was great, though it wasn’t the story line i really wanted. one of my fears was that steve would be stuck in some minimum wage job he hated. i wish the epilogue would have been robin tutoring him or something instead. though i did love them being a package deal.
also just robin. loved her! and her coming out scene was so good and really touched me. also as new characters go i loved alexei (slurpies out). i wasn’t a huge fan of erica. i didn’t find her cute or funny, just really annoying and taking up screen time for old characters and relationships
and that’s what i found to be a huge problem for this season. a lack of balance between characters. like jonathan might as well as not been there. he felt like nancy’s sidekick which is really unfortunate because i think his best scenes are with joyce and will and they were nonexistent. i don’t even remember him talking to will. and like last season, nancy and mike’s relationship wasn’t there. max and eleven were the only kids to get good scenes and even then.... max wasn’t really in the right. max vs hopper vs mike were just all extremes and i thought it was hard to be on any of their sides. also i think dustin being away from all the other kids and them really not care hurt the season too. and again, how they treated will with no resolution. the only kid i really liked this season was el and kind of dustin. lucas just felt like he was there.
nancy and jonathan are just boring. i don’t care for either as character and i really don’t care for them together. their fight was interesting, but then it was dropped and jonathan will never doubt her again. i mean, both arguments were valid, though jonathan didn’t have to go with her. idk he was in the wrong, but true points were made. i think nancy best scene was with karen and that was really good.
karen, karen, karen, i felt her thing with billy was unnecessary, uncomfortable, and a huge waste of screen time. that should have been cut in favor showing the friendship of the kids. maybe it was just there to show billy’s mommy issues?
the russians felt over the top, but since it’s 80′s tropes we gotta go all out i guess. loved btf and steve calling mjf alex p. keaton. true eightiesness.
i still don’t understand why they were all eating fertilizer, but maybe i just didn’t pick up on the reasoning.
and having suzie and dustin sing was just... weird. it really out of place and took me out of the moment.
also dacre and millie’s acting was so good this season. i really felt things solely on their performance (especially dacre’s since i dislike billy)
i’m sure i’ve said many unpopular things, but this may take the cake. i’m not sure if i want another season. the ending felt final to me and frankly, i’ve lost interest in the upside down. i love the show and will continue to watch, but how many times can they fight the big bad?
also stancy is dead as heck lol. officially jumping ship to steve x happiness

My actor picks for a WIP.
After some serious soul searching I have come up with my top picks for actors in the film (or TV series) version of my book which does not even have a name yet.
Simon Pegg as Jack Dent, Jack Dent, and Danny Jackson.
Nathan Fillion as Barry, Bad Barry, Detective Barry, etc..
Eileen Atkins as Jackie Denton (an old batty and female version of Jack).
Hugh Laurie as Doc Landreth, Sober Doc, Depressed Doc, etc..
Rowan Atkinson as the voice of Normal the cat (and variants).
Ricky Gervais as Dave Chippy, the worlds most creepy man
John Cleese as Santa, the bearded Hells Angel & Computer Expert
Sarah Millican as Lilly (Normal's owner)
I'm torn between Karen Gillan and Jenna Coleman as Suzie, the literal girl next door and voice of reason.
Lenora Crichlow as Jesse, the shy "housemate" of Suzie
I'm torn between Gemma Chan and Katie Leung as Hannah, the kick arse spy from another reality
Peter Kay as the Six Inch Devil (SID)
Eddie Izzard as Quookwubbler Juckbox
Luke Pasqualino as Zack, who never notices anything odd.
Tim Curry as Hugh, the badly made android
This all started because I woke up imagining Nathan Fillion starring in something I had written. Then because I had a strong lead actor in the role of Barry I needed someone that could stop Fillion stealing the show and in my mind cast Simon Pegg as Jack. I would love to see Pegg and Fillion bicker and bungle their way through the increasingly bizarre and dangerous worlds I set this story in.
I also happen to think that both Nathan Fillion and Simon Pegg bring the required level of geekiness to the role. Both characters are utterly geeky and the actors have both shown they can make that work while also being funny.
Update: If I cannot have Nathan Fillion I would be just as delighted with @wilwheaton who, IMHO, would also make an amazing Barry and has both the geek and acting chops for the role. In fact, screw Fillion as Barry - I have a villain he can play - I want to see Simon Pegg and Wil Wheaton bring my book to life.
As a side note, I creased up laughing when I realised that Eileen Atkins could play an older female Simon Pegg. I'm not 100% certain that she is the perfect Jackie Denton (Squeeble Detective) but at least this casting choice would give the casting director a starting point. Whoever they pick, she'd have to carry a scene alone as Jackie Denton is a character written with the idea of a stand-alone novel or series of her own. That or Simon Pegg in drag which works too.
I needed an actor for Doc that could match the two boys for screen dominance. That led me to Hugh Laurie as the various Doc Landreth characters. We've already seen what he can do with House, and we know the actor can handle his comedy. I would pay good money to see Hugh Laurie being amusingly rude to Simon Pegg and Nathan Fillion. Add the voice of Rowan Atkinson to the mix and they would turn things up to eleven.
The hardest character to cast was Dave Chippy. Chippy has to hold his own but needs an actor that can handle comedy and has the chops to make a character truly unpleasant and creepy. Ricky Gervais may be the man for this. He has shown that he can pull off "character oblivious to everyone's true opinion of him".
Peter Kay would kill it as (at least the voice of) the Six Inch Devil. I can think of no better way to bring out the comedy of this character than Kay.
John Cleese would have the chops to make every moment with Santa memorable despite the presence of some acting giants with more lines. You will have to trust me when I say, Cleese as Santa would make you wet yourself laughing.
With Cleese in that role, I now want to put Santa and Juckbox in a scene together because Cleese vs Izzard would blow the roof off.
This is where I started to get a little less sure. Suzie is a character that holds things together and compels a cast of characters that are either feckless or too distracted towards moral choices. Given the sci-fi nature of the setting, I wanted a Doctor Who actress and could not make up my mind between Karen Gillan and Jenna Coleman.
I had a similar struggle trying to make up my mind for Hannah. Gemma Chan and Katie Leung both seem to be a good fit for the character.
I had no such problems casting Jesse. Lenora Crichlow would nail it, I have no doubt. As of this draft, Jesse is a character that needs a strong actor to fully realise the character. There's still time to fix the way she is written but Lenora Crichlow would still be amazing.
As for casting Zack, I must confess I chose Luke Pasqualino because he just looks like how I picture the guy.
Likewise, my casting of Tim Curry as Hugh is mostly because I'd be fascinated as to what the man would do with the character. The casting director might have other ideas. I just think Tim Curry is great.

Critics Choice Awards Favor Nomadland and Promising Young Woman, Reshape Awards Race
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
What a difference a week makes. Seven days ago, the Golden Globes arrived with controversy and allegedly upended the race with some major surprises (and major head scratchers). Is Jodie Foster really a contender for Best Supporting Actress? Was the support for Maria Bakalova just internet hype? There was plenty of hand-wringing, but Sunday night’s 26th annual Critics Choice Awards arrived to recalibrate the state of the awards race—and to give an interesting look at how a singular industry marches on during a pandemic.
The biggest winner of the night was Nomadland, which picked up the Critics Choice Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, making Chloé Zhao an even more concrete frontrunner at the Oscars (ahead of her Marvel debut via Eternals). But after the Golden Globes shut out Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman, the movie’s star Carey Mulligan took home the Best Actress prize at the CCA while Fennell herself won the Best Original Screenplay award. With the pitch black comedy/feminist thriller being one of the most talked about films of 2020—and one that had an honest to God theatrical release—its resurgence at the CCA will counteract last week’s media narrative that it is too outside the box and too hard to categorize (or feminist) for awards voters as the race moves forward toward the guilds.
Similarly, Maria Bakalova got a major bump after she lost in the Golden Globes category she seemed like a shoo-in for (Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy). Prognostications that the chances of the Borat 2 star winning a major award had vanished proved premature, with Bakalova taking home Best Supporting Actress over perceived favorites like Amanda Seyfried for Mank and Olivia Colman for The Father. She also teased us with information that she’d be there in a heartbeat if Sacha Baron Cohen ever decided to make Borat 3.
Overall the awards circuit continues to be strange during the COVID era. Once again stars and filmmakers appeared Zooming from their homes or hotel rooms. Jason Sudeikis, who’s Ted Lasso won Best Comedy Series and Best Actor, once again appeared in a hoodie (this one from the set of Booksmart). Conversely, Anya Taylor-Joy—the breakout star of The Queen’s Gambit who won a Critics Choice Award tonight, as did her show for Best Limited Series—was in an evening gown in the wee small hours of the morning.
“It’s kind of fun dressing up in your own house. I don’t know what it is, but you get to play your own playlist, you just sort swing around, and you get to be in your pajamas in a minute,” Taylor-Joy says about awards Zooming. On the subject of fabled awards after parties, she also notes, “It’s going to be like 2 a.m. in London quite soon, and I have to go to work tomorrow, so I’m going to work! Which I’m really excited about; it’s my favorite place in the world.”
Yet in such strange times, celebrating art that actually entertained or distracted people has perhaps greater merit than ever. And it can bring attention to unique projects. That’s at least one silver lining Andy Samberg, who picked up the Critics Choice Award on behalf of Palm Springs in the Best Comedy Movie category, told us.
“I always hesitate to say this, because there is nothing good about the quarantine and the pandemic, and everything, but I think in a lot of ways it helped people see our movie more because everyone was at home [and] because it went straight to streaming to Hulu in the States,” Samberg says. “It came out really at this moment when movies were just starting to come out again… We were like the first wave of ‘see what happens when you put a movie out!’ It turns out people were just sitting there waiting for new stuff.”
Below is all the new stuff that was awarded by the CCAs. Winners (including a few ties) will be BOLDED.

Day 5 – We Almost Didn’t Drink Wine Today
[Meaning not as much to write about, think of it as a break for the reader as well]
Much like yesterday, it was a day for goodbyes as the Robb’s headed back to Sammamish. After another quick breakfast in which John had Eggs Benedict for the 4th day in a row, we recounted many of the highlights, discussed what we would do differently, hugs were exchanged, farewells wished, etc.
This was our official vacation hump day, falling on an actual hump day.  Oh, the symmetry.  It was the day that Susan and I had decided would be a focused workday.  Our best chance to not get to far behind on things, so that the Monday of our return would be less abrupt. This is pretty typical for me, Work Life balance is pretty good, but Vacation Life balance is less so.  We also thought it would be a good day to rebuild our constitutions and prepare for the coming onslaught – no lunch, lite dinner, drinking unlikely.  We gathered our gear and headed down to hotel patio, spending the next 4 hours writing, editing, emailing, responding and other nonesuch.  So productive.  On a side note, I finished the Lenny Bruce autobiography, the second half of the book was pretty slow as he describes the many legal battles he went through, as he was often arrested for lewd/dirty speech.  More importantly, I started my second book pictured below. 50 pages in and flying, it was recommended by our friend Karen Crowe, I am connecting with the authors ideology on when not to give a Fuck. And how to better choose what fucks to give.
Tumblr media
It was now 3p, and we were antsy. We went for a walk, found a coffee shop as we always do, found some cute women’s clothing stores as Suzy always does and blammo bumped right into one of many wine tasting rooms.  This time Fulcrum vineyards, recommended to us by Karen (not Crowe) at Three Sticks. Fulcrum is a Pinot/Chard winery that of course offers a cabernet.  They also offered some nice and very different rosés, one pinot based, one cab sauv/cab franc based.  If you are new to wines or just introducing yourself to rosés, I’d recommend the second cab based one, it is more fruit led.  But once you have had a few the pinot-based rosé might be more to your liking and very French.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We didn’t join the club but took home a rosé and a pinot to share with Tom and Jen over the next few days.  We had a great conversation with our host, I shared my thoughts on the Pinot vs Cab, she of course disagreed but Susan thought her answers were bias, I cannot remember her name.  For shame.
Next stop the hotel to chill for a few hours and decide on a light dinner for our last night in Sonoma.  We went back and forth and ended up back at Maya.
Tumblr media
So, the light part went right out the window. We also watched the St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins go to overtime in the Stanley Cup finals.  These are the days when you know you have married right, yup hockey.  Not saying Susan was totally engaged, but she did look up when something cool happened. [As I post this, game 7 is now looming, I am now cheering for St Louis, as they have never won a Stanley Cup, and we are all tired of Boston] Fish Tacos, Chili Relleno, Mole Enchilada, Pomegranate Margarita and a Blackberry Basil Mojito.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Time for bed. Preparing for the gluttony to come.  I told you it was a light day, not as much to write about either.
