ARIA by Kozue Amano, a sci-fi slice of life. What can I say? I fell in love with the anime when I was 12 years old and I immediately bought the first volumes. This series helped me... Binge-Watching: Gintama, Episodes 37-39

In which there’s not really that much new to talk about these episodes, but we do get some killer jokes and further development of the show’s political themes, so I can’t complain too much.

Winter Jubilee

Sometimes you just gotta kick back and chill, and there are few better excuses to do so that a slew of holiday-themed episodes. They’re the perfect opportunity to drag your heroes out of the main plot and just let them flump around doing what they do best. And Gintama capitalizes on this style with four short stories that range from hilarious to heartwarming, all without missing a beat. My favorite of the bunch was undoubtedly the first one, basically one long extended joke about how ridiculous the concept of Santa Claus actually looks from the outside (”I drive around in a sleigh and make children’s wishes come true.” “Like a benevolent thief?” “Yes!”). But props also to Gintoki’s epic struggle for the final copy of JUMP that turns into a glorious exaltation of the magazine and its values. This is how you pander to your audience, folks.

The Price of Revolution

That being said, I think the episode following these stories, where Katsura ends up working for a ramen shop, is actually one of the show’s single best episodes yet, telling a complete, self contained story that adds so much texture and complexity to the greater narrative, while still carrying some fantastic jokes and resonant emotional core. Gintama’s exploration of the effects of and reactions to colonization has always been its smartest component, and it takes on a surprisingly complex dimension here, with Katsura forced to come face to face with a woman whose husband was collateral damage in the rebellion’s attempt to fight back against the Amanto. It’s an undeniable fact that revolution is never as clean as you want it to be; it’s messy and chaotic and innocent people get caught in the crossfire far too often. And Katsura being forced to reckon with that, even just a little, is proof, once again, that Gintama’s got more going on underneath its hood than it lets on. It also helps that Kastura and the ramen shop owner have great chemistry together, making for one of the most surprisingly supportive bonds in the entire show thus far. It’s rare to see our favorite sullen ninja actually enjoy himself to the extent he does with her, which makes the gut punch of finding out what happened to her husband that much, well, punchier.

This crop of episodes definitely felt like a break, a chance for the show to slow down and let the characters breathe for a bit. But it still found time to work in interesting details and complexities. And judging by the crazy next-episode preview, this breather is about to explode back into action like never before. Consider me hyped to jump right back into the deep end!
