Rings of Power live-blogging, LETS GO! (below the cut to avoid spoilers)

Just finished watching Ep1. There were some interesting parts, but it was… a little rushed? The writing had solutions just magically appear. I don’t know why 8 episodes seems to be the episode count for streaming seasons now but I dearly miss the days of 22 episode seasons. Tolkien is so damn long because his writing took breathing room ( sometimes too much). Wish the showrunners would keep that in mind.

Just as an aside, in the days of streaming do we really need this long of a recap? You know, the old adage of show rather than exposition. Just saying.

Think it could have been cool to do a cold open on Sauron/Halbrand’s face and then have a cut/ morph into other Sauron’s face. Would hype up his shapeshifting abilities from the get go.

Well that was brutal. Sauron is not great at campaigning obviously.

Also why does Sauron need to be crowned by Adar/the orcs. He’s a dark lord, the second to Morgoth. Just go in and BE A DARK LORD. Take that crown and slaughter anyone who says differently. Don’t gotta campaign for it, it’s not a democracy.

So a lesson learned from my last liveblog was that you have to accept adaptations' unexpected character interpretations, and the show is clearly taking a more Wounded and Vulnerable approach to Lucy (I support her right to be a vicious little hater, but I get that it'd be harder to pull off without her inner monologue, and tbf the books are from her pov and she's presenting herself there the way she wants to be seen) but nonetheless I am baffled by show!Lucy fainting when the skull starts talking to her rather than going 'well I don't have time to unpack that right now' and leaving. That moment does a great job of setting expectations for their whole dynamic, it fits better with her major workplace conflict of being arguably a little too chill about all this, and most importantly if she passed out he would never let her hear the end of it.

yoon ji-woo has shades of every major 104th girl but most majorly mikasa and historia

mikasa: to the details of her relationship with her dad, her isolation + untrained fighting instinct, trauma-informed aloofness, single-minded purpose. if eremika hadn't killed the traffickers right there and she somehow survived/escaped, revenge is a totally reasonable and tbh kenny-like life because where would they have taken her? presumably underground, this is a canonverse MP mikasa AU backstory

historia: oh the entire premise of MY NAME, kenuri would then slot in much more neatly, but she dgaf about either of her parents so?

jeon pil-do just such a sweetie it kills me, but his falling for oh hye-jin superficially (filling in blanks when she is just like. silent) and then learning about and admiring ji-woo herself is a reasonable, faster-paced version of jean growing up from his cadet crush into someone mikasa trusts deeply and mutually, and BY THAT SAME TOKEN, ymir liking krista and loving historia

the narcotics unit we can slot in any old soldiers but tbh i'm stumped on who's old enough(?) to be cha gi-ho, fulfills that cat-and-mouse role to kenny, so for the fun of MP shit i'd just go with nile
