Tito Jackson, original member of celebrated pop group Jackson 5, dies at 70

Tito Jackson — an original member of the celebrated pop group the Jackson 5 and brother of musical superstars Michael and Janet Jackson — has died, his children said on Instagram. He was 70.

“It’swith heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson is no longer with us,” his three sons TJ, Taj and Taryll said in a statement posted on Instagram.

Mr. Jackson, born Toriano Adaryll Jackson, was the third of nine Jackson children who grew up in Gary, Ind.

            Katherine Jackson is the mother of Michael Jackson, The Jackson 5, Janet Jackson and LaToya Jackson.

            Katherine was born in Clayton, Alabama, US and then moved to Indiana, near Chicago. She grew up wanting to be an actress or singer and was in the school band. In 1947, she met Joseph Jackson and married in 1949 and had ten children. Joe was a talented singer and musician, who formed the Jackson Brothers (Jackson Five) in 1963. Michael was already showing musical talent at the age of 4. Michael dedicated his album Thriller (1982) to his mother and Janet also dedicated Rhythm Nation (1989) to her.

            Katherine released her autobiography My Family the Jacksons (1990), she revealed that Joe had cheated on her during their marriage and he had a daughter with another woman in 1974. She remained married to Joe even though she considered divorce numerous times. His cheating was portrayed in the miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream (1992) she was played by Angela Bassett.

            Katherine became estranged from her daughter La Toya, Katherine accused her daughters husband and manager Jack Gordon for ‘brainwashing’ her. La Toya alleged that Katherine emotionally abused her which Katherine denied. In 1997, La Toya got a divorce and reconciled with her mother. Katherine often defended her children to the media, including Michael.

            In 2009, Michael died from an overdose and Katherine became guardian of his children and they lived with her at her Californian home. In 2012, her guardianship was suspended and rights were given to her grandson TJ Jackson (Tito’s son).

The older of two daughters, Jackson contracted polio at age two, which left her with a noticeable permanent limp. As a child, Jackson aspired to become an actress or country singer, but was dismayed to find no notable black country stars.

In 1949, she married Joseph "Joe" Jackson. Katherine gave birth to 10 children between 1950 and 1966, including Michael and Janet Jackson.

Katherine's family, both as a musical group and as solo artists, have achieved success in the field of popular music from the late 1960s and onward. The Jacksons are one of the most influential families in music history.

In 1997, the Jackson 5 was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Michael was inducted as a solo artist in 2001, making him one of the few who have been inducted twice. Joining her brothers, Janet was inducted in 2019. Michael, Janet and the Jacksons were awarded stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984, 1990 and 1980, respectively.

Katherine Jackson was portrayed by Angela Bassett in the 1992 miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream.
