March 31, 1993 - An excerpt from a letter Demri wrote her mother Kathleen.
“Mom,
Fab made this stationery out of one of my pictures. I am sure you just love the fact that my boobs show (or what there is of em).
Next week I want to come see the boys. We’re working on the car now so being un-mobile really sucks.
There’s a lot I want to talk to you about. I have been so busy you wouldn’t even believe it. I really miss you.”

💬 Kathleen Austin, Demri’s mom: I received a call that the school (Douglas Anderson School of the Arts) was taking applications and auditions. 25 applicants were selected from 300! Dem was selected and was so excited I let her stay in Florida. We flew her home for Christmas, she met Kent*, returned to Florida but didn’t stay. She managed to get greyhound bus ticket home
*Kent Lake was Demri’s boyfriend at the time. They broke up somewhere in 1988.

It’s a bit longer than usual so it’s harder to share but I’m glad to have this new prose poem in the current issue of Kenyon Review. It’s inspired by one of my essential films, Losing Ground, and will be in my next book.

Tag Game: Writeblr Interview
Thanks to @cowboybrunch for the tag, this looks fun!
Long post incoming.
----------
Short stories, novels, or poems?
I find I end up with novelette/novella-length stories more often than not. I've written plenty of one-shots and short stories for prompt events, and I like doing that especially when I'm doing fanfiction or nameless characters. When I write with ocs though I tend to stretch stuff out and what had originally started as a one-shot or short story ends up becoming a novella.
Don't get me wrong I have plenty of WIPs planned out to be novels (like Trials of the Six), but the first drafts of The Hunter, the Myth and the Cure and The Legend of Orian Goldeneye were both novella-length and will probably stay that way or end up being longer. My Hero x Villain series ended up being a novelette, so basically I can't plan for how long a story's gonna be lol.
I've written a little bit of poetry (heck, I wrote one for The Legend of Orian Goldeneye that may or may not get cut), but it's not my favorite thing to write because I way overthink things. But when I do compose poetry I usually do limericks.
What genre do you prefer reading?
Fantasy, no contest. And within fantasy, usually High Fantasy with a lightcore or hopecore focus. I read some gritty stuff, but I find they tend to have elements I don't really like more than the ones I do.
Are you a planner or a write as I go kind of person?
Both? I like having an idea of where the story's gonna go, and I plan that out either before writing or while writing, so I don't get stuck. But it's really loose and gives plenty of room for the characters to go feral. I'm in the middle, but I lean more panster than plotter.
What music do you listen to while writing?
Soundtracks, usually from videogames or movies. I really should start organizing my two writing playlists by vibes other than calming music and boss fight-type, but I'm pretty happy with how I have it now. I also have some seasonal aesthetic playlists which match the vibe of the current weather.
Field Music Playlist (calming background soundtracks)
Boss Fight Playlist (pump-up, more exciting soundtracks)
Seasonal Aesthetics: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter
Favorite books/movies?
Oh goodness.
Uhhhh. UHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
My knee-jerk answer for favorite movie is and always will be The Princess Bride. But I also really like Back to the Future, The Martian, and Clue.
With books I tend to separate them into categories. For fantasy I would say it's a tie between Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, The Death Gate Cycle: Hand of Chaos by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson, and Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynn Jones.
For sci-fi it's The Martian by Andy Weir, followed closely by Skyward by Brandon Sanderson.
My favorite classic is Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, followed by Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin.
And for nonfiction I like Stuck by Justina Van Manen, The Healing Imperative by Mike Aquilina, and Beautiful Holiness by Kathleen Beckman.
And of course the Holy Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Any current WIPs?
This post is getting long enough already, I talk about my WIPs here and they're all linked in my pinned post in one way or another.
Create a character description of yourself:
Quiet, and keeps to herself. Never without a book, never without a rosary. Her brown hair is long, reaching nearly past her waist, and often kept up in a ponytail or a braid. She dresses mostly in dark colors, black jeans or skirt and a shirt or blouse that is black, navy, or gray, but occasionally wears a bright shirt. She wears little to no makeup unless she feels like being extra fancy. She always has a ring on her right hand, and usually a bracelet that matches her outfit, both of which she fiddles with. Her friends are few but she loves them dearly, and they are often on her mind. Though she may be quiet most of the time, she never hesitates to speak up for what she believes in.
Do you like incorporating actual people you know into your writing?
Eh... not really. I know my own thoughts and experiences much better than those around me and I wouldn't wish a lot of the stuff I do to my characters on the people I know so it just feels kinda weird to me.
Are you kill happy with your characters?
I find I like to bring my characters to the brink of death and back again rather than just killing them unless I want to write about grief. I'm more kill happy with immortal characters for the same reason.
Coffee or Tea while writing?
Usually just water, but if I can get my favorite iced coffee drink than I'd be happy to drink that.
Slow or fast writer?
It varies depending on the amount of research I have to do in a scene, but I think I write pretty fast. I haven't measured my words-per-minute in a while but it was pretty good if I recall correctly.
If you were in a fantasy world, what would you be?
I'd love to be a guide of some kind, part of the group enough that I won't get killed off. I'm pretty good with navigation and maps, and I'd like to have powers (minor ones, not overpowered) but that would depend on the fantasy world.
Most fav book cliche:
Scoundrel with a heart of gold. I eat that up like a starving woman. Han Solo, Mat Cauthon, Ifan Ben-Medz, etc. Draven Cozenson, Diana Ozborne and Korfel Domin are two oc examples.
Least favorite cliche:
Love triangles. Frustrates me to no end, especially how most of them are resolved and how they really only seem to drive wedges in the fandoms (Keeper of the Lost Cities fandom, I'm looking at you.) I have no love triangles in my stories and I never will. I have minimal romance anyway but in the two I got there is no competition.
Favorite scene to write?
*evil grin* Love writing the whump or hurt/comfort scenes, all my ocs get whumped in some form or another, and I have fun every single time.
Reason for writing?
Creative expression, love for my ocs, with a dash of "I maked these :D"
In all seriousness, it's a hobby that I love. It sparks joy and it's a craft that I continuously improve upon and the more I write the better I get at writing. I also occasionally fantasize about publishing one day and my books having fandoms of their own. Maybe that will happen someday.

«Butthole Surfers, the Ritz, Austin, ca. 1987, by Eric Mark Lord. The thing I like the best is the perfect, balletic expressiveness of Kathleen Lynch (in between Jeff Pinkus and Paul Leary.»
live shows from the Butthole Surfers in 1987 were mind blowing! they were performing at the apex of their musical alchemy and seeing them in Chicago, April of 1987 remains my absolute favorite show of all time

Austin Jeffery “AJ” Boutain, Utah inmate 239929, Colorado inmate 186639, born 1993; incarceration intake in 2019 at age 26; sentenced to life
Murder
A man who was previously convicted in 2018 of fatally shooting a University of Utah student has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing a Colorado man.
Austin Boutain was sentenced in October 2019 for the death of 63-year-old Mitchell Ingle, of Golden, in October 2017. Boutain pleaded guilty to murder and aggravated robbery.
Prosecutors say he and his wife, Kathleen, were drinking and smoking marijuana with Ingle in an RV park when Boutain became angry at Ingle's suggestion the three have sex. Boutain slit Ingle's throat and burglarized his trailer.
The couple then drove Ingle's vehicle to Salt Lake City, where student ChenWei Guo was shot to death.

New Demri photo!
A previously unseen Demri Parrott modelling photo can be seen in the background during an interview to her mum Kathleen Austin for the 2005 educational video "Medical Consequences of Addiction" by CNS Productions. We don't know who's the photographer.
Kathleen Austin, CDP, RC, Addiction Therapist at the Harborview Medical Centre in Seattle, Washington, talks about her daughter Demri and the endocarditis she suffered because of addiction, a subject sadly she knew too well.
Here's more information about the DVD and its contents (not listed on the IMDB), and CNS Productions.
Very special thanks to Memories of Demri on instagram for allow us to use the pictures and give us the information!

The Texas A&M University Professor Joy Alonzo criticized the Texas Lieutenant Governor, Dan Patrick, during a visiting lecture in March 2023 on the opioid crisis at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.
Just hours later, Alonzo learned a student accused her of disparaging Patrick during the lecture. The complaint reached her supervisors and the Chancellor of Texas A&M, John Sharp, who was in communication directly with the Lieutenant Governor’s office.
The student is reportedly the daughter of the Texas Land Commissioner, Dawn Buckingham, who served in the Texas senate with Patrick for six years, received an endorsement from him in her run for Land Commissioner, and had attended Sharp’s wedding in May.
Less than two hours after the lecture had ended, Patrick’s chief of staff forwarded Alonzo’s professional biography to Sharp, reported the Texas Tribune. The Chancellor responded to the Lieutenant Governor directly via text message that Alonzo would immediately be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation to fire her.
The University of Texas Medical Board quickly issued a censure statement, distancing itself from any comments Alonzo made during the lecture.
Texas A&M and the University of Texas Medical Board did not specify what Alonzo said during the lecture that prompted the investigation. Students interviewed by the Texas Tribune only recalled a vague reference to Patrick during the lecture on opioid overdose policies. Texas A&M ultimately allowed Alonzo to retain her job after the investigation did not reveal any wrongdoing.
The swift investigation sparked criticism from Alonzo’s colleagues and free speech advocates over the interference of politicians into classroom discussions and how state universities are managed.
Adam Steinbaugh, an attorney with the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, a non-profit legal group focused on protecting free speech on college campuses, criticized the investigation as “inappropriate” in an interview with the Tribune and noted its chilling effect, regardless of the outcome of the investigation.
Marcia Ory, a professor at Texas A&M Health and co-chair of the university’s Opioid Task Force with Alonzo, noted the long-term consequences of the interference in an email to Jon Mogford, vice-president of Texas A&M Health.
The reporting of the suspension and investigation of Alonzo comes as the Texas A&M President, Katherine Banks, resigned last week over the backlash to politically motivated outsiders halting the hiring by the university of Kathleen McElroy, a Black journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin, to revive the journalism school at Texas A&M.
On Alonzo, a spokesperson for the university system told the Tribune: “It is not unusual to respond to any state official who has concerns about anything occurring at the Texas A&M System,” claiming the system followed standard procedure investigating the claim against Alonzo.
The Guardian has contacted Texas A&M, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Joy Alonzo for further comment.

He was nervous.
"Drummer." Victoria smiled at him. He smiled back.
"Pretty girl in the crowd."
The two chatted for probably hours. The two exchanged phone numbers. Roger drove her home and expected nothing in return. He called her about fifteen minutes later.

Victoria had lots of friends throughout her school years. She also had lots of boyfriends, though these were never serious. When Victoria was 17, the music scene caught her eye. She started lying her way into bars using her older sisters ID and going to concerts. She would photograph college bands for a quick buck.
When Victoria was 21, she met Roger Taylor.
