What is the main lesson of your story? Why did you choose it?

In reference to Obsidian Sapphires (because that’s the wip whose theme and message I’ve fleshed out the most), the core lesson would be to not let ambitions of grandeur, perfection, divinity, etc derail you from the things you have/the people you love, and that even the most seemingly perfect solutions can still cause tragedy. The central identity of Obsidian Sapphires was always in relation to family, personal identity and the Allaitri Chalice was central to Eshani’s goals even from the first ever draft. This draft focuses on the Chalice and its ramifications as a result of it being openly used in society.

What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding?

A lot of it is inspired by my perspective, my experiences, etc. It draws heavily on certain aspects of my home country, and also some of my own thoughts too. For instance, Helindians being maestros at non-alcoholic fruity drinks derived from my own wish fulfillment! I don’t drink, I’ve never had a drop of alcohol in my life.

It also contains a lot of nature, because it’s a direct contrast to how sterile and corporate the real-world is and I think it really helps make the world very aesthetic, very alluring, somewhere that people would get sucked into and never want to leave. A faerie-style honey trap, if you will.

I'm going to give a specific mention of Morilaste, for it takes a certain amount of its inspiration from Italian art and history. This really became apparent after my visit to Milan and Venice, because I was in awe at the art and architecture. The scale, the details, the artistry, everything. Absolutely stunning. I find that when I'm in or near places like cathedrals and other highly grand, artistic structures, it feels otherworldly. I am awestruck that people made these, that people put funding, time and effort into these grand structures, and we get to benefit from the fruits of their artistry hundreds and thousands of years later. (This is why minimalistic, corporate-hellscape buildings of the modern age break my heart)

And it's that sense of otherworldliness that I want to evoke when designing Morilaste, because I want it to capture the aura of divinity that the court's namesake sought for. I want to use the sheer scale of it to encapsulate just how much of a beautiful, deadly trap it is, and how it contrasts and complements the way ordinary Helindians perceive it from the outside, with basically nothing but rumours and stories to rely on.

What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness or help the reader grow as a person?

Alycja’s trying to prove herself to others, reclaim her innocence in the face of those trying to misconstrue her motives. She wants to be loved, she wants to be admired, and her ordeal is coming at a time when she’s at the start of her teenage years, a pivotal time when she is beginning to flesh out her own identity separate from her identity as part of her family. Her arc is one of the most prominent ones in terms of the theme, because her choices threaten a touch of tragedy almost no matter which path she takes. In a sense, it’s a warning to not let others take advantage of you, and also an affirmation that there is a lot of power in one’s own decisions, even in the face of things that are outside of one’s control.

As for Eshani, she’s also trying to prove herself, but more to repair relations with the people she cares about. She knows what she wants, but her arc is about actually confronting the reality of her desires, and her realising that she wasn’t ready yet. This occurs all while balancing the responsibilities of her current place in life, trying to claw her way out without betraying so many people. She carries a lot of guilt, and the message I want to portray through her endeavour is that the past is the past, it cannot be changed, but the next best thing is to do something now, in the present. Dwelling on what could’ve been is what sets her back, and I look forward to the part where her character development fully clicks into place, I think it’s kinda beautiful (and it fits with the theme and her goals :DDD)

How many chapters is your story going to have?

I’ve an estimate of 30, but this could easily change.

Wow, it’s been ten, going on eleven years at this stage!

Do you have any words of encouragement for fellow writers of writeblr? What other writers do you follow?

Don’t give up on your ideas! And especially don’t delete them. Stash them away, let them ferment, make sure they’re written down somewhere (and not just on a computer, physical notes are important too). You’ll never know when your ideas may germinate and go full circle. And even if they don’t go anywhere, there’s value even in those ideas just existing. (Side note, people love deleted scenes and snippets!)

I follow so many fantastic, talented, creative writers on here (and I know a decent amount in real life too!), that I would break the tags per post limit so many times over. A quick glance at the nightstand tells me it's 10:03AM. I stretch my arms above my head before moving to a sitting position, the standard hotel white duvet rustling with every miniscule movement.

I grab my phone off the charging stand and quickly swipe through all of the notifications. After getting back to the hotel last night, we all went to our separate rooms. When Jace didn't follow me as he normally did, I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed at not talking with him well into the early morning hours.

He wandered about the city aimlessly, eventually stopping at one of the fountains and resting at a nearby bench. He stared at the splashing water almost desperately, trying to turn his mind to less depressing thoughts. It didn’t work.

rewritten as:

He wandered. He didn't know where he was going, where he wanted to be. Nowhere. Anywhere. As long as it wasn't here.

Eventually, he stopped at a fountain square. The air was cold where it blew off the mumbling stone. One of many in the park, the fountain muttered and grumbled, the water cycling endlessly in an illusion of permanence. He sat down on a bench to watch it, to distract his stupid mind from its stupid, depressing thoughts. Maybe he could go into a trance. Maybe he could find some kind of profound wisdom in the miracle of gravity made trivial by modern technology. Maybe he could just dunk his head in the basin and count all of the coins tossed in despite the signage, drowning the world out until he had to come up for air, choking and coughing.

He sighed and leaned forward, burying his face in his hands.

A Deal Between Dealbreakers

For the Mistletoe Kiss tag from @forthesanityofstorytellers ! I hinted at part of this in a previous WIP Wednesday tag, and now I can delightfully reveal the whole thing! For context, this takes place a couple months after Eshani first became a High Councillor 👀

In the midst of fire and fervour, so flared this dance. Faeries bound in a trance of violins, tricks and trades exchanging hands.

Eshani scribbled her final touch on a note, flicking it to the other side of the lake. Matters for the afternoon plagued on her mind. Idle tasks, and those not so lenient.

Responsibilities and alcohol made a potion for internal tempests.

She found peace in the star-splattered nightfall. Hues of purple, blue and green adorned the night between the stars, reflected twice more in the lake and her eyes.

"They say it's good luck to kiss under starlight." One of her fellows slipped to her right, subtle as the night's breeze.

"Hmm?" She shook her head, making a noise not quite a laugh nor a scoff. Audacity was a form of bravery, she supposed. "How long have you been here? One would have to wonder if the stars are younger."

He scoffs, the surprise in his features a light decoration on his chiselled face. "Are you calling me old?"

"I'm not calling you young." Eshani closed the smile slipping through her face.

A gentle heat rose through her nerves, a common thread she hoped to quench. But with every word that he spoke, the more the thread lengthened.

"What makes of you, then?"

"An enigma, clearly." She laughed. Another mistake, a step towards ruin. The fire within her had a passion to it, a nostalgia she tried to bury.

They say the worst thing than talking to a High Councillor was becoming one, but worse still, the intentions written over his face.

"What drives you in life, Namon?" She gazes up at the stars, fingers laid bare on the railing. "What's your purpose?"

He bristles a few fingers near hers, a breeze of callouses over smooth, jasmine-blessed skin. "Well, there is one thing."

Eshani tilted her gaze in tandem with two of his fingers, propping her chin. She scoffed in laughter. "Of course, I should have known. What else are you but predictable?"

"Would you not pleasure me? Just this once?" His spruce-brown eyes sparkled with starlight, canines poking from his smile.

"Just this once?" She returned a smile of her own, his idle touch making her twitchy.

May Cerigo forgive her for this. "One kiss? One kiss alone?"

She pulled him by the shoulders and brought her face close, her whispers caressing the golden skin near his ear. "You have a deal."

"No fair, I deserve more." He cupped a hand over her left cheek, pulling her mouth into his.

Words melted from her tongue, sucked into each other's mouths. Her hands sought purchase around his neck and the back of his head, her slender fingers threading through dark, trimmed hair.

If any of them let go, the deal would be sealed. A moment's embrace brought her into a memory.

His lips perfectly fit into hers, his hands an electric touch over her skin.

She pressed in further, heat rising, melting into his embrace.

If she wished, the world would just be the two of them, in eternal fire, in this touch. Pulling each other's lives into one, her lips crawling up his cheeks.

"That's two kisses." She taunted, Namon planting his touch on her neck.

"You haven't let go yet." Another mark, a hue different to the one plaguing both their backs.

She returned the favour, her tone sultry in his ear. "Dealbreaker."

One cheeky peck on the lips for good measure, and they found each other staring into their eyes, flared with sparks of magic.

"I hope we can renegotiate."

Eshani gave him a smirk, hiding a laugh lingering behind the thrillrush. "You wish."

Here's a snippet of a scene I recently drafted for Sunset Vol 3 featuring Fox and Louis:

“Fuck you,” Fox muttered, shifting to move his arm again, but Louis only tightened his grip, pulling him off balance and into a hug. “No,” Louis said, arms coming down around him hard. “You don’t get to push me out. You don’t get to drink this away forever. You don’t get to check out.” Fox leaned in and rested his head on Louis’ shoulder. “I’m not going to survive it sober,” he said, just above a whisper. “And yes, I hear myself right now.” Louis nodded but didn’t say anything. They stayed like that for a long while, before Fox said, “It’s fine. I’m fine,” and shifted to stand back up. “We need you,” Louis said, looking up at him from the ground. Fox sighed. “Really? You’re going to talk to me about work right now?” Louis shook his head. “No. We just need you. That’s all.” “I’m not going anywhere,” Fox said, looking away. “I think you already have.” Fox padded over to the bottle again, studiously ignoring the look of frustration and worry on Louis’ face. “Nah, I’m right here.”

This is from The Old Gods Book 1: The Shadow of Gods because I've been thinking about Kyadin and Em'het's dynamic a lot today!

Breathing? Now he was being yelled at for breathing? Em’het’s pinkish face turned red with his anger. He took in a deep breath. And he didn’t let it out. He stared at Kyadin, cheeks puffed out, full of purpose and spite. Kyadin ground his teeth together, waiting for Em’het to break. But the boy wouldn’t allow himself to. He would turn blue if he needed to, just to show Kyadin how ridiculous he was being.  “All right, boys,” Ky’tus sighed. “Em’het, how about you go get us something to eat, eh? Snacks always make me feel better.” “You must feel bad a lot,” one of the foremen grinned, making Ky’tus and the other man laugh.

Okay, enough of that. Now that you’ve seen fluff incarnate, on with the interview~

Were you named after anyone?

Yes~! My name actually translates to “angel.” I have to thank my mom, Amaterasu, for that one!

When was the last time you cried?

I-I stepped on a bug yesterday, and it took thirty minutes for Ita to calm me down.

Do you have any kids?

Mmmmnope. I’m still young for a celestial. In human I’d be…20.

Do you use sarcasm a lot?

H-Huh? I don’t think I even know how to….

What’s the first thing you notice about people?

OH! Usually if they make me feel all warm and fuzzy to be around. Ita does that all the time! He’s so warm and nice….oh! And he beat up these two criminals the first night I crashed down in Hokkaido, so I know I’m safe with him 💖

What is your eye color?

A shocking blue!! I was given the gift of lightning like Raiden, but I’m…haha….s-still not quite sure how to use it. It makes Ita very nervous…

Scary movies or happy endings?

Happy endings!! Aaaaa, there was one time Ita turned on a scary movie and I couldn’t look up from his chest. I-I felt really embarrassed, but he was so kind about it. He let me snuggle up to him the rest of the night so I wouldn’t get nightmares. Funny, his whole face was so red….like a tomato! Haha….oh, I wonder if he wants me saying this….?

Any special talents?

Oh! I have my scepter! It can shoot a really cool lightning arc. I….may have caused a blackout in parts of Japan because of it….? D-Don’t tell my brothers….Mike will get FURIOUS….! I can also fly when I have my wings unfurled, but…for obvious reasons I can’t do that a lot, haha….~

Where were you born?

That part is still a mystery to me. I’m trying to find my mom for more answers, but it’s kind of hard to get in touch with a sun god…figures, huh?

Do you have any pets?

Umo!!! He’s my pet dove familiar. He’s actually how my brothers were able to send me letters, but he’s a good boy who didn’t tell them my location, nor did he let them put a tracker on him. I have seed for him whenever he visits, and if I can pull it off, we do a flight together 🕊️

What sort of sports do you play?

Uh….I don’t know, actually? Does flying count as a sport?

What was your favorite subject in school?

Awww, I really didn’t like school, mainly because Mike was my teacher, and he’s STRICT. He made me learn all sorts of boring angel stuff like “don’t go to these dimensions” this or “don’t cross the rainbow bridge” that. However, I REALLY liked my Earth Studies. That’s…kind of the reason why I came here…heh.

What is your dream job?

OH!! Ita got me a part-time job working in a small library in Gaijin, and I LOVE it! It’s really quiet, but we get a little traffic since we’re next to a diner. When I’m not helping customers find books or sweeping the floor, my boss lets me read. There’s SO many cool things about Earth!! Did you know that you have separate cook books for jasmine rice and brown rice recipes? THAT’S AMAZING!!! ✨✨✨

Espio kept his head down while they walked along the sidewalk. He looked so... ashamed.

Vector felt stupid for not noticing earlier. He knew Espio struggled with perfectionism and self-worth issues. He knew that he got really depressed. Of course he shoulda put that together with the fact that Espio never wore short sleeves. He prided himself on being good at putting two and two together. And for something this important, he hated himself for not recognizing it sooner.
