Today my oak stool has really started to take shape, and I've rapidly discovered that I've prepared not nearly enough spindles! This is the downside of coming back to greenwood furniture after a 10+ year gap and having got used to making up designs as I go along. I confess I was not looking forward to ripping down all those rafters into batten. It would have been a very noisy hour or so for everyone within earshot, plus a very dusty occasion! So I'm extremely relieved the builder of the neighbours' extension has decreed that the old battens don't meet spec to use on a new roof. For the past 2-3 years I've been gradually gathering together materials from which to build a summerhouse in the garden. The only thing I'd not been able to find was time to make a start. Since that's now available in abundance I've no excuse not to get cracking, though "designing as I go along" means nothing's happening that fast. As the evenings draw in I've gone back to my wood sampling ways, combining a clutch of mystery timbers with a few recently purchased specimens. They've all had one end sanded up to 360 grit, so that with a suitably powerful lens I'll be able to scrutinise the arrangement of pores, rays and parenchyma, which are very much the starting point for any species investigation.
