I say Sashiko isn’t (Fine) Art. However, I humbly accept an admiration to our Sashiko as the Art (because I believe they mean well). I just don’t want “Art” to be an excuse to whatever, or even worse, “Not learning”. As long as one keeps learning & listening to the voice behind the word, I am happy for them to call their stitching “(Sashiko) Art”. ☆ Similarly, my mother Keiko never considered herself as an Artist. When I tell her how “creative” her works are, she laughs them off saying “I am just stitching”. Well… it is quite interesting. In Japanese culture, the title of “Art” may be something “given” rather than “insisting”. Another cultural difference and perspective to look at. Anyhow, I think Keiko makes a great Sashiko Art. The photo is Sashiko with numbers of natural dye Sashiko threads & vintage fabrics. It shines like a rainbow by her choice of thread & fabric. I sometimes share that Keiko is a genius Artist, and there are stories to support my idea (Having a great artist as a mother “can” be a bit of a nightmare).

Sashiko was developed as ordinary stitching by Japanese women. In the severe condition, they stitched to care for the family. The care includes both positive and negative emotions, such as love and struggles, I believe. Therefore, Sashiko is powerful and inspirational. We can feel the “pride” of Japanese women in their stitching. ☆ In my childhood, I often wondered why I wasn’t a woman in practicing Sashiko. Some even told me that my Sashiko will never be the “true one” because I would never experience what women would go through. It is true. I cannot go through the same experience (suffering, pain and joy). Therefore, in my life, I have been trying my best to listen. I have been trying to offer what I could do. I cannot speak on behalf of women, but I can try to imagine their suffering & joy.  ☆ After all, all of what I do is for the three generations of women that I respect the most - my mother Keiko as a genius Sashiko Artist,, my wife who offers unconditional support to me & helps others, and my daughter who creates the future with her mixed heritages. Happy International Women’s Day for them, and for you who enjoy Sashiko stitching today.

“Protecting/Creating a culture”. What does it mean to you? I am still learning, but there is one core concept that I keep in my mind, “Provide a fishing rod, not only the fishes”.  ☆ Let’s say, we want to create/protect a culture of “having fish” everyday. A daily habit (of eating fish) will create the culture. However, “how they get fish” will hugely influence the duration/significance of the culture - either [someone delivers the fish everyday to them] or [they go fishing everyday]. ☆ One reason I speak up in English is in this concept. I see many people saying “I know Sashiko” while enjoying “Sashiko” with the idea/materials someone delivers to them. There is nothing wrong with “Someone’s prepared Sashiko (Someone’s delivered fish)”. However, I wonder if the culture will remain existing when someone stops preparing (delivering). Instead, I want them to learn how to catch the fish using a fishing rod as well - I believe my Online Sashiko Class is an equivalent to that.  ☆ Sashiko is not a trend for us. At the same time, I know many people will move on when the trend is over. I want some of us to be able to get the fish even if they end up with not-having fish. That’s my understanding of protecting the culture. By the way, there are some Artisans who do not need a fishing rod… they catch a fish by hand. I sincerely respect them & protect their voices as the Sashiko artisans.

Patchworking (stitching swatches together) is not only for the “Artistic” purpose. In fact, the primary reason to patch the small swatches is to give them the second stage to be spotlighted. A small piece of (vintage) fabric can be just a waste by itself. However, by stitching together & doing Sashiko for strengthening the material, it can re-obtain the role as “cloth”. It looks beautiful - but the “artistry” is secondary. Bringing the fabric from a pile of trash to the most fashionable cloth is what we may be able to contribute to this society. It is beautiful not only because it is “artistic”, but fabric and we appreciate each other. Can you hear it?

Happy New Year! It is another Japanese custom to share the new year's resolution, which I believe many have the similar custom. My resolution for 2021 is to overcome “fear” of being judged (disliked) a bit more. As much as I try to write honest insight here, I am often scared of the possible pain that I may end up going through by sharing. This year, I will try to face the fear more - not ignore, acknowledge the fear.   ☆ I understand the general needs in Sashiko trend. The short, easy, positive, and "how to" message will bring us more “followers”. I like it to be happy & peaceful as well. However, I learned the existence of “pain” that I didn’t realize before. It isn’t physical pain - more like emotional pain. After all, “who follows (friends who cares what i write)” is more important than “how many follow” in this account. So, I try to be a little bit more honest here in 2021. ☆ Last year, one criticism I received surprised me. They claimed “Atsushi is (always) angry”. When I ask for reasonable respect to Japanese culture behind the words, some told me my anger was destructive. I am not angry - I sometimes choose to be angry, but most of my feelings are not anger - it is sadness - and the “pain”. I am just trying to be honest, yet the honesty was perceived as anger there. I was…well, I am scared of that. I don’t like to be judged or disliked. However, ever since I realized the “pain”, I don’t have an option to give up. 2021 is going to be the year of stitching & facing myself while relying on Sashiko as the mirror to understand who I am.

Sashiko and Art. Especially since I think in Japanese in my brain, I am still indecisive if Sashiko is the Art. I am still learning, but there is one thing I can share. It is our hope to encourage people throughout our Sashiko.  ☆ If the definition of Art is “an expression of human creativity in visual form”, then our Sashiko can be part of the Art. However, for us, “Self‐Assertion (expressing our specific vision via creation)” is secondary. That’s another reason I do not consider myself as an activist. What we would like to do is Not to lead people. We would like to support them from behind.  ☆ By sharing out Sashiko, if we could encourage that we all have the ability to appreciate & care for others, then it is then our “mission completed”. Keiko wants “(old) fabrics” for the 2nd life. I want to protect those people like Keiko. After this crisis of pandemic is over, I would like you to come visit us and touch our stitching. It has something more than visual - and that’s the potential I would like to encourage others.

Sashiko became a really big trend. Now, “Any thread” became “Sashiko thread” and advertised. This “thread” will be “◯◯ Thread” when the trend moves on. In this Internet world, it is impossible to track each item and argue with the seller. Only thing we can do instead is to ask a customer to be “mindful & smart” - not “quick & shallow”. ☆ “Sashiko Thread” is not a marketing term. There are reasons we call it “Sashiko Thread”. Please learn if the thread is made in Japan. Please make sure the seller knows what they are talking about. Please check if they can explain the materials (like thread & dye ingredients). It is us who choose the future. When we are mindful enough, we can make a choice of protecting authentic vendors who have been doing the same work over 30~50 years. When we ask for easy & quick solution, then the culture may be destroyed there. ☆ Sashiko is(was) a very tiny small crafting industry. Your choice will help those small manufactures to survive through this difficult time. Please learn from us (and @Sashi.Co) what Sashiko is for us as Japanese Sashiko Artisans. ☆ The photo is “Kakishibu (Japanese Kaki Persimmon Tannin) Dye”. There are many kind of Kakishibu, like using the prepared juice and just dip it… but we collaborated with the artisans & we dye from the actual fermented Kaki persimmon tannin (in order to pass down the Kakisibu Dye culture as well).

While a society shout out the importance of “productivity” as if they can price someone’s life based on “value” they produce, Sashiko stands on the completely opposite side of "being productive”. What do we want by achieving higher “productivity”, and “winning” in a capitalistic society? It is probably the “comfortable days with no pressure”. We work so hard to achieve the “slow time” in a super fast moving society, to enjoy the mindful moment. So do I. I work so hard to be "productive". ☆ Well, Sashiko will occupy both of our hands. No matter how “productive” I want to be, there is a limit of what I can do regardless how fast I stitch. So, while I do Sashiko, I am already achieving a goal to “enjoy the moment”. If you only try Sashiko with the fabric with "stitches-size  preprinted", please consider learn Sashiko from us (Online Class Available). It is fun to fill these stitches sized dots on the fabric, but our Sashiko is a bit different: it may be easier to get out from the sense of “productivity” - I “can” stitch with my eyes closed. I need to check where the needle goes with my eyes in stitching the pattern, but when I just stitch freely, my eyes are pretty much free of its responsibility. Sashiko isn’t about the beauty in imperfection - it is the beauty from the moment of enjoying who “they” is. I hope my message makes sense.  ☆ (Please check SashiCo Youtube Channel to see how I stitch Sashiko).

Many understand that we advocate the traditional Sashiko. In fact, it isn’t true. Keiko and I are quite off the “traditional” route. As much as I love the tradition of Sashiko, what I do (Sashiko Denim) and what Keiko does (combination of many colors & types of fabric) are NOT traditional. The Sashiko artisans in my family would not consider them “traditional”. ☆ Keiko’s iconic Jacket, Hitomezashi Jacket, is one example. This is a mixture of her interpretation of Sashiko in 40 years & her artisanship in tradition. Vintage Mud-dye Silk with Sashiko due to the weakness of vintage silk. Her natural dye Sashiko thread will alter its color with the fabric’s history. I can talk about this jacket hours and hours… If one thinks that they know Sashiko by reading a blog article, then it is so sad that they are missing many beautiful aspects of Sashiko. The Japanese rarely call themselves “a master”... A master is a title from someone - not a marketing tool from an artisan themselves. ☆ This 1-year-making Jacket often gets sold out immediately. Or, recent years, She makes one as a backorder. It was my dream to share this in the U.S… so I ordered & will be in the U.S. (when the logistics are better, to avoid lost packages). Sashiko is more than just stitching - it is a culture in a form of simple & mere stitching. (Please do not ask “What is traditional Sashiko, then?”. A tradition cannot be (shouldn’t be) described so easily with words and a few photos).

“BORO” is a result of repetitive Sashiko. Therefore, it contains the “hope/care” of ordinary People. In today’s Live Streaming, I talked about what Boro is for us, for Sashiko artisans. Boro is more than a result. Sashiko is more than technique. It is my goal to share something more than “material” or “result”. ☆ The photo is a Boro (to be) piece made by Keiko, and I keep using it and mending to make it more “Boro”. It can be a museum quality, but I would like to keep using it and encouraging people to feel/touch it when they see me. It is fantastic that people consider Boro as the Art. For us, Boro is another form of fun result of Sashiko stiching.

A question within myself. What is the difference between Quilting and Sashiko? Toward #QuiltCon2020, I am spending as much time as possible learning the Quilting. ☆ Quilting and Sashiko have a lot of similarities. “How to enjoy fabric” is a universal language in between Quilting & Sashiko. One (possible) significant difference will be that quilters have a specific design as their blueprint. They have a destination when they start the project - very beautiful design and theme. They cut fabric nicely and beautifully, then stitch together. (Forgive me if my understanding of quilting is incorrect.) ☆ Sashiko also requires a process of cutting fabric, of course. However, including myself, many Sashiko artisans prefer, “Not-cutting-the-fabric” process. If there is a choice, I prefer using the fabric as is. Some of the Boro we make, we try to use the fabric as is - with less cutting the fabric. It is difficult to explain logically, it is more like a feeling. Again, it is not about good or bad. The quilting I find is so beautiful, and I will enjoy the Quiltcon. I am excited to learn more, and happy to share my culture in a festival of quilting.

Yes, the beautiful white & pink threads in the previous photo were the Sashiko Thread. So are these beautiful blue threads. I used white & pink thread for a project that I am enjoying now. In Sashiko’s tradition, the Japanese used mainly white thread on the Indigo fabric (and there are reasons/stories why it became the tradition). “Indigo & White” is my favorite combination as well. However, color is one of many areas we can be creative with respecting the tradition. You may wonder if I dislike the colorful Sashiko - the fact is “Not At All”. I grew up in a colorful Sashiko environment. ☆ Keiko officially started dyeing the thread early in 2000’. She desperately wanted the color that “age” with sharing the same moment with vintage fabric. It is not a matter of which is better or worse in Natural Dye and Synthetic Dye. It is the matter of “creativity” of how we want fabric & thread age together (or differently). Regardless, our Sashiko is based on an assumption that we enjoy Sashiko items for a long time - not only for a season - more like a few decades, if possible. The thread matters to make it happen. Color can be a great area to be creative. However, I want the stitcher to know the difference in Sashiko Thread. (One of the shinning blue is one of a kind Logwood blue mainly available in the U.S. by @upcyclestitches).

I share the importance of “mindfulness” in the main account, @sashi.co. However, it doesn’t mean that I am “mindful” all the time. In fact, I am sharing what I would like to practice instead of what I am practicing today. It is incredible to slow myself down, and realize how beautiful things I didn’t pay attention because of its “uniqueness” - that I couldn’t take care because only a few of them were created. We offer the Natural & Hand-dye Sashiko thread by Keiko Futatsuya. She carefully creates the beautiful colors, but as the Natural Dye’s character, we often get the spin-off - which is too good to call “second''. When I find it, I put them aside for the future In-person workshop/pop-up opportunity to share them personally. Now, since all of the workshops/pop-up-store are canceled for 2020, I am once again mindful and introduce them as the beauty of Hand-made. It is our responsibility and pride to make everything “the same”, yet everything is one-of-a-kind because it is all made by hands. ☆ I keep updating some colors on websites. Some of them (especially the long name one) are very small in stock, and we do not know if we can restock them in the New Normal. The One-of-a-kind threads will be available in our regular store, and the one-of-a-kind items that we made with our hands will be available in our new website (which I am working on now). The Password to get in the designated page is: JapaneseSashiko // ☆ https://www.japanesesashiko.com/ ☆ - - - ☆ どうしてもコロナ禍で流れが遅くなってしまう仕事の中で、ひとつ前向きに考えられるのが、「これまで”いつか紹介しよう”と思っていた糸」を紹介できることです。

I often say, “please spend some time researching before asking a question.” There is a reason behind my saying. A “quick information” may tell you what it is - but “what it is” can be someone’s interpretation. A consideration in researching will bring you “wisdom” that creates your own understanding. Many people misunderstand me that I had a comprehensive education in Sashiko from my family background. No. No one had “taught” me Sashiko. I learned by “observing” it. This is how many Japanese craftsmanship has been passed down. Learning by observation is not efficient. Often, it causes a detour by misunderstanding. One may never reach the “core” after spending decades. It can take years of wasting time to fully get it. In this society where quick and instant gratification (IG) dominate the market, I need to balance what I do. Over the Internet, anyone can say anything without learning. One can be a Sashiko teacher by reading one article. Popularity defines what is genuine because the followers also ask for quickness & I.G.. A louder voice offering what the market demands may overwrite a genuine, silent voice. (Well, we may call it capitalism…). A culture may be repainted over this quick movement. And therefore, I established the workshop/Online Class with investing my life.  ☆ We are experiencing a big paradigm shift now. Don’t let others create you by “quick” answers. I am not offering the “quick Sashiko” because Sashiko's core exists in opposite. Read before ask. Stitch with your hands before wondering with your brain. Avoid using “freedome” or “Art” as an excuse, then learn, please.

Sashi.Co & Keiko Futatsuya are suspending all of the activities/plans between 4/18 to 5/31 due to the Gifu State & Japanese national emergency (please check Keiko’s English website for more information). It is a very difficult situation since Spring is the best time to welcome tourists all over the world, and we have offered so many workshops this season. We sincerely hope to welcome those who wish to visit Keiko for her Sashiko Collection & workshops. (Please be advised that all of the workshop Keiko offers has the prerequisite of Atsushi’s Sashiko Workshop - Core & Basic - either in-person or Online. Atsushi will share the basic & core technique, and Keiko will share her ideas of how to apply the technique.Online Sashiko Class is available with limited availability) ☆ *Photo made by Keiko for a sample of “Free-style Sashiko Bag.” I wouldn’t call this “Boro Bag” and she wouldn’t probably start as a Boro-project. She simply enjoys her playful mind & mindfulness in playfulness.

As the one who manages the online store, it is probably the time to be “super-active”. Making more kits for Sashiko. Listing more items for sale. I have many ideas that I should be doing now. However, I prioritize the story here, on Instagram, 1 post per day. I am even sacrificing the time for the dear Supporters on Patreon (I am so sorry for not updating the Patreon as much as I would like to). Why? In this kind of crisis, the culture can be repaired easily and “unintentionally”. No one thinks they are doing anything wrong. However, a culture may be different after the crisis. I would like to avoid that - and sharing the story is only & the best contribution I can think of. ☆ I am a father of 5 years old - so the family is my top priority. I cannot stay up all night like I used to do because I need to keep my immune system normal. I would like to - and I will try my best - to keep my webstore attractive… However, please, please be a smart customer. Please be attentive to who you are purchasing from. It is a good time to enjoy Sashiko - and your choice of who you are buying from and what you are buying for, will help to preserve the culture. There are many good stores around - it doesn’t have to be my store. Just please be attentive to who you are buying from. And of course, here is Atsushi’s business account @upcyclestitches // 😊 Thank you for your support. The photo is on that I enjoy taking instead of stitching on weekend night.
