I can’t state that enough: Hanasaki and Kobayashi’s relationship is pretty fucked up ‘cause they’re both so unstable and it’s not clear what saving means: life or death?
In the end, Kobayashi’s barrier grew weaker to the point that he has to wear shoes, but it’s still there. That means his death wish didn’t suddenly vanish, and that’s okay. It’s only natural, after everything he’s been through. That’s probably what I loved the most about Trickster, how they’ve handled this deep, complex character.
I have a feeling that Hanasaki and Kobayashi will be the key to each other’s happiness and they’ll be able to hold their hands again, it’s just that we won’t be able to see it. ♡

I... I figured it out. A year after I finished Trickster, I figured it out. Kobayashi's powers and the way the appear and disappear don't make sense in the anime at all (with like, five exceptions) and I just thought this was another example-
BUT. It isn't.
He didn't want to die. His powers didn't kill Hanasaki not because of another mistake. They didn't because he wanted to die with Hanasaki.
(That's no breakthrough so far, I've seen people talk about this, but consider what it means-)
Kobayashi's powers, which always acted as a barrier from other people for him, ultimately forcing him to stay on his own to the point where he was actually scared of getting close to another living being, can very much and without any logical mistake protect another person.
Kobayashi didn't just want to die in that moment, he wanted to die with Hanasaki specifically. And his powers reacted to it.
And now consider how this system works in the Trickster universe.
The very depths of Kobayashi's soul wanted to die with Hanasaki. That wasn't just some act of kidding himself because well, they're dying anyway, what are they gonna do about it. That wasn't even something along the lines of "I like him, if I get to die with him I'm okay with it". We obviously see that Hanasaki means a lot to Kobayashi during the whole anime, but this is the prime example of how this is so much more than a casual, close-to-surface level friendship.
Look me in the eyes and tell me Hanayashi isn't canon. I dare you.
