Alina's mother was a grisha/witch and the fae of her father's court despised that. One night when she was four her family was targeted. Her parents fought back but her older sister and younger brother were killed along with her parents.

Anastasiya petitioned to have Alina released into her and Aleksander's custody? Which Alina's uncle agreed to - not wanting a reminder of his neice. He was furious she survived but his brother didn't.

Alina was taken to Aleksander and Anastasiya's home. A year later Ivan's family was targeted in Tula Valley. His entire family was slaughtered and The Fold was made as retribution?

Alina and Ivan had met before these tragedies, their mother having been childhood friends. Ivan had sat with her the night she'd been taken in by Anastasiya and Aleksander. Alina did the same with him when Anastasiya and Aleksander brought him home.

The pair grew up together, they'd annoy each other in lessons and generally be wild children. Till Mal came when Alina was 13? Ivan was 14. Mal pushed a wedge in? Idk why fully except his family was Helion's ambassadors. Helion wanted to make sure Alina grew up respectable and married into his court rather than another witch. As she held the Sun Summoner powers of his royal family. Her blood couldn't be wasted on some grisha/witch suitor.

That's about all I got. I mean I'm sure Ivan and Alina finally confronting their emotions are dramatic and over the top as them.
