Portable Pockets, Part 3

Here we see the side pocket of the bag with the zipper open to see how the contents fit. There is a piece of hardware at the back where the strap can be latched, so you can carry the pouch landscape-wise with the zipper at the top.

In a small plastic pouch are a couple of tissues, plus one dose each of my daily meds, plus four anti-diarrhea tablets (you don’t need them often, but when you need them, you really need them). I set a reminder on my phone, to replace these first day of the month of their expiry date.

Next to that is a Hello Kitty keypouch containing a minimal first aid kit, which we will look at in the next post.

Below that is a single Clinell hand wipe. Easier than carrying a whole hand gel.

Next to that is a cylinder with a pair of Flare ear inserts. These sre for people with hyperacusis. If you wear these over a period of time you can train your ears to not be bothered by ambient sounds. The ones in this cylinder are spares, and I also use it to stow the ones I’m wearing if I have to take them out temporarily.

Below them in the cylinder is a pair of silicone thingies to put on the earpieces of glasses to stop them falling off. You never know when you might need that - but I find them painful to use all the time, so I just carry them.

The cylinder is meant to attach to a keyring, but I found that the ring got pulled apart and the top unscrewed, and I nearly lost the cylinder or its contents as a result. I always place it inside a bag now, and I never attach it to anything.

The Portable Pocket

Here is one of the small rectangular cross body bags I regularly use as a portable pocket. In this essay I will make the case for the portable pocket system.

Often, women’s clothing does not have pockets. Because only some items have pockets, when you do have and use pockets, you may leave things in them that should be taken out: things wind up in the laundry that shouldn’t, or simply get forgotten when switching outfits.

Until all women’s clothing has pockets, I argue that it’s easier not to use pockets for regular EDC. Quick handsfree stowing of a phone or other large item, maybe. But carrying essential items? Too risky.

Meanwhile, when out and about, you need quick access to your phone or passcard to get through doors and ticket barriers. An otherwise good bag might not be configured to remove, use and replace these items fast enough. And in winter your coat may reliably have pockets, and be changed less frequently than other clothing. But what about the warmer months? And what if you don’t feel quite secure doing the pocket juggle and uncertain self-pat-down with items of value?

Additionally, once I get to the office, I’m not necessarily carrying things that I would be carrying outside. I keep a tiny first aid kit in my keypouch, for example, because the one thing I never leave the house without is my keys to get back in. But in the office, my house keys stay in my backpack. If I carried them around the building, I could lose them (as well as carrying too much stuff I’m not using all day).

So I propose the portable pocket system. A cross-body bag with just enough space for a phone, and a few other bits without which I’d be screwed if a meeting went on longer than I thought it would and I can’t get to my desk.

This particular one is leather, from CNC Costume National via TK Maxx ($$). I was lucky to get it because it was the only one with a leather strap. The others had chain straps, which are irksome. Strictly speaking I didn’t need this bag, because I have other black pouches (albeit not solid black), but I was irresistibly drawn to it. It is even better than I initially thought, and great value for money.

Note that the strap needs to be adjustable. The cross-body strap should interfere with the appearance of your outfit as little as possible (the black bag is for wear with black clothes). Normally I use pouches with cord straps which are thin, but black on black blends in. And then you need to adjust the position of the pouch relative to the waistband of your clothes.

This pouch has a few more features than my others, which are all single zip-top pockets with no extra bits. All the items you see fit into all my different pouches.
