Typography inspired by Buildings

Grundtvig Typeface - REY Graphic

This is an experimental typeface inspired by the Grundtvig Church located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Elements of the iconic west facade of the building were taken to design this typographic system, such as the verticality of the structure, the stepped gables contours and the arches present in the doors of the building.

“It may seem strange but I really had no specific interest in the Grundtvig Church at first, it was chance that led me to it,” Reinaldo tells It’s Nice That.

The type is more contemporary than gothic - the building itself combines classical features with marked geometric shapes that make it unique. He incorporated curves to soften the straight lines and right angles, utilising the arches of doors for inspiration.

For my project I want to explore this idea of creating experimental type from the architecture around me - the Royal Arcade Boscombe has lots of intricate victorian details which could be fun to create - I'd like to make it feel more contemporary whilst still having victorian flourishes.

Another project which has inspired me is Eunjoo Hong and Hyungjae Kim's letter designs inspired by snail slime.
