The film is directed by Masakazu Hashimoto (TARI TARI, Soul Eater Not!), who previously worked on the 21st, 23rd, and 27th films, based on a screenplay co-written by himself and Kimiko Ueno (The Royal Tutor).
Its story begins when Hesogakure Chiyome appears in front of the Nohara family and introduces Chinzo, the child she brought with her, saying, "He is your real child." Meanwhile, Shinnosuke is taken away to the "Ninja Village" where only ninjas live. The Hesogakure clan is a ninja family that has been protecting the "Earth's Navel" as a user of the "Mononoke no Jutsu" for generations, and Shinnosuke is their heir. When the plug of the "Earth's Navel" is pulled out, the Earth will wither and tomorrow will never come... Shinnosuke is not a child of the Nohara family, but a child of the ninja who protects the earth!

Nobuhiko Ôbayashi’s House is an infamous Toho film. According to Bill, if you do an internet search for “weird Japanese movies,” House turns up number one on every list. Chad calls it the strangest movie they’ve ever removed. The 45-minute documentary on the Criterion Blu-ray edition is well worth the cost in Jeff’s opinion, especially in giving the viewer a vague idea of what House is all about. Doc, on the other hand, says don’t even bother trying to follow the narrative, but if you pay attention to what’s going on in the background, you might just see a talking watermelon puppet.
House (Hausu, original title) is without a doubt a unique and stunning film, one everyone should see at least once. Jeff has already recommended the Blu-ray from Criterion and currently, House is available to stream on HBOmax and the Criterion Channel. Your loyal Grue-Crew says check it out!
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror 2-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode in their very flexible schedule will be And Now the Screaming Starts! (1973), another Amicus Productions film starring Peter Cushing, Stephanie Beacham, Ian Ogilvy, Herbert Lom, and Patrick Magee.

Howdy all you Supercultists out there on the interwebz! I’m Bad Movie Professor Cameron Coker (BS in “Nobuhiko Obayashi” with a minor in “Criterion Supercult”) and I’ll be posting my hype-tacular speeches every week along with some long-lost speeches from past Supercult Shows!
This week Supercult takes a summer vacation to our Aunt’s house to watch House!
youtube
A young girl, upset with her father for suddenly bringing home a new stepmother, decides to visit her Aunt’s house in the countryside with her six friends, but soon the quaint summer get away becomes a waking nightmare. Before long the girls start disappearing and supernatural events, possessions, and gruesome encounters with household objects begin to take their toll on the girl’s sanity. Can they discover the secrets behind this creaky old mansion or will they forever be consumed by…the House!
youtube
House is Calling to You Come Back Home and Marry Me
Nothing is more terrifying than indigestion.
I mean…that’s cool lighting right there.
The only thing more horrifying would be if they were playing chopsticks non-stop.
“I will allow you to pet me, but as soon as you’re done I’m going to have this house eat your face.”
The Japanese rock band Godiego have a brief cameo in the film as the men who flirt with the girls at Tokyo Station.
Gardening tip: Cut the thorns off roses before giving them to others, that way your friends won’t be symbolically hurt by love or whatever.
OH GOD! THE HORROR! Visiting family!
Following the massive success of the 1975 American film Jaws, the film that is widely attributed as the first modern ‘blockbuster’ film, the Toho film studio was clamoring for something similar and reached out to Nobuhiko Obayashi, an experimental film and TV commercial director. Nobuhiko went to his pre-teen daughter for inspiration with the rationale that adults “only think about things they understand … everything stays on that boring human level” while “children can come up with things that can’t be explained”. Nobuhiko’s daughter’s ideas and childhood fears, such as a house that eats girls, fingers getting caught between piano keys, and futons falling in a way that made them look like they were attacking her, were synthesized with Nobuhiko’s own fears from growing up in Hiroshima and losing all his friends to the bombings of the city during WWII, into the script for House, a story about one person’s fears, loss, and anger spilling over into the lives of innocents.
Woah there House, slow it down. This is supposed to be a Comedy Horror, remember?
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know!
Oh no! The Cat has gone all Emperor Ming on us!
“We got you a watermelon Auntie!” “I see…how nice…I’ll murder you all.” “What was that?” “Nothing!”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or8wDzmsibA
Yeah, let’s just put that back where you found it and forget this whole thing happened.
Can we all agree that all mirrors are creepy? Why do we even have them now that we have camera phones??
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qvFtwzEG5U
Are they gonna sing Bohemian Rhapsody or something?
The script for House was green-lit, but no director wanted to touch it, fearing that it would be a career ending project. Though Obayashi offered to direct the film himself, Toho rejected him for not being a staff member at Toho. Obayashi decided to instead promote the script with the help of his colleagues in the commercial industry producing everything from a soundtrack and a novelization of the script to a manga and radio drama. The cast was put together as well, mostly from among the models and actresses that Obayashi had worked with in the commercial industry. Of the main cast only two members, Kimiko Ikegami and Yōko Minamida had any significant prior experience. Finally, after two years of production limbo Obayashi’s producer told him that Toho was tired of losing money on comprehensible films and were ready to let Obayashi direct an incomprehensible one. Thus, with Toho’s special permission, House would be written, directed, produced, edited, and have visual effects by Nobuhiko Obayashi. It was his feature film debut.
youtube
youtube
Oh, did we not mention that Obayashi was a special effects guy? I mean you might’ve guessed with all the experimental film stuff in his past, but…yeah, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Obayashi desired the special effects to look unrealistic, as if a child created them, and using everything from animation, matte effects, and visual collage, turned a script which even the cast and crew felt was utter nonsense, into something that would downright puree the brains of audiences. For a scene in which a character vanishes under a wave of blood, Obiyashi had her suspended nude, pouring buckets of blue paint on her to create a blue-screen chroma key effect where the blue colored parts of her body would deteriorate on camera. In some cases, Obayashi didn’t know how some effects and processes would look until after the film was completed and sometimes the effects didn’t turn out the way he envisioned them.
youtube
youtube
youtube
Nevertheless, House was first released in 1977 in Japan as a double feature with the romance film Pure Hearts in Mud. Toho didn’t expect House to be successful, and indeed early reviews of the film from critics were lack-luster at best, but the film became a commercial hit, especially with younger audiences, and went on to garner additional praise in the United States. It wasn’t until a DVD version of the film became available in 2009 that the film took on a new life as a genuine cult classic even going so far as to be inducted into the Criterion collection which describes it as “Equally absurd and nightmarish, House might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet… it’s one of the most exciting cult discoveries in years.” With a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.4 on IMDB, one wonders how Supercult can even bear to screen a film with such genuine critical success.
youtube
youtube
Well, it’s because we can’t take our eyes off of it. It’s garish, psychedelic, bloody, hilarious, and downright hypnotic. Both a technical marvel and a hilariously poor executed film, House will not only perplex and delight you, but might even give you genuine nightmares!
The House is calling you fellow Supercultists! Come back home and marry me!
The Supercult Show is proud to present, House!
