The King and Queen of Bhutan have announced the birth of a baby girl. The princess is their first daughter and third child. Both the mother and child doing well. Congratulations to the Royal Couple and the princess’ two older brothers.

The Raven Crown is one of the most distinctive crowns in any royal family. It is a satin and silk cap topped by a striking embroidered raven’s head. The piece holds greats symbolic meaning: the raven is the national bird of Bhutan; the embroidery features Buddhist iconography believed to protect the wearer from evil forces; and the design itself is based on a helmet worn in battle by an ancestor of the ruling Wangchuck dynasty.

Her Royal Highness the Gyalsem has been named Sonam Yangden Wangchuck.

Sonam is a Bhutanese name denoting merit, longevity and good fortune. The name Yangden, meaning precious jewel, signifies prosperity and wellbeing.

The naming ceremony was held at Tashichhodzong on the anniversary of His Majesty’s accession to the Golden Throne in 2006. The ceremony was presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo. His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Their Majesties the Queen Mothers and Members of the Royal Family were present for the ceremony.

March 2024 // The King and Queen of Bhutan were amongst the impressive roster of guests at the pre-wedding events for billionaire couple Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant. They flew on a private jet with popular Indian fashion designer Manav Gangwani, a long time friend who makes many of the couple’s outfits.

Bhutan is one of the few sovereign states in the world which still carries out a full coronation. The current King had his coronation in 2008 after his father’s abdication, on a date chosen by royal astrologers. The event involved the completion of sacred Buddhist rites before the former King placed the crown on his son’s head.
