About the Murdle fandom. (long post)

I have made vent posts before, but this is less of a vent post and more of explaining the specifics of the situation, which I have not yet shared my perspective on publicly. I know it's a long post but please, please for my sake read it.

I joined Tumblr because I wanted to be a part of the Murdle fandom.

It started with Raven. She was the only person on DeviantArt (where I started) other than me who posted Murdle art, so I summoned the courage to talk to her. I'm glad I did. She ended up one of my best friends, not just in the fandom, but period.

After a while, I more or less left DeviantArt and moved entirely to Tumblr to focus on the Murdle cartoon. For a while, she was the only reader, until I was joined by RoyalleBlue, my best friend on Tumblr.

And I would also like to shoutout kirvee, electricskelecomics, foxglove.woods, and murdleandmarot for providing support

Raven invited me to the Detective Fanclub Discord server. I was extremely nervous coming in but was welcomed by electricskelecomics and a few others. I wasn't used to a public server and had intense anxiety, but was slowly warming up to talking.

Eventually I was comfortable enough to talk regularly about Murdle. Raven posted AU information about Logico, and I jokingly called her out for 'hurting my babi boi'. Another user suddenly publicly called me out for 'infantilizing' characters, completely humiliating me. They gave an indirect apology (through Raven) apologizing because they 'knew I was fragile'. I left the server, to then which a mod followed me to DMs and criticized me for leaving for a long while until I stopped responding and they finally let it go.

To this day I am very uncomfortable when the server is brought up and often fall into another depression cycle.

I generally felt better here on Tumblr. Even though I didn't get much attention, I still had Blue and Raven.

I however seemed to unknowingly be making an enemy. A prominent user in the Tumblr Murdle fandom who I had never spoken to directly but had still liked the posts of and who indirectly said I was 'very cool' at one point began completely avoiding me, although I'm not sure exactly when it started. Initially I figured they just didn't read the series, which is fine, but they also ignored my art while usually liking and reblogging every other Murdle art post. This kept increasing to the point where they no longer interacted with Blue simply for being friends with me, and refused to acknowledge art that I was even tagged in.

At this point I could tell that it was personal, and yet I still don't have the faintest idea of what caused the grudge, as again, I never spoke to this person. They blocked me at one point before unblocking me the next day (and still avoiding me). Eventually I couldn't take it anymore, I sent them one non-aggressive message explaining why I felt like I had to block them and did. It hurt me, because I knew this was a very nice person otherwise and someone I wanted to be friends with initially.

It doesn't matter if it's not direct, targeted avoidance hurts. Every time someone other than me, Blue, or Raven made a Murdle post now, I'd get a harsh reminder of the fact that I was being ignored on purpose.

The depression I've gotten from all this is more severe than one might expect. I just wanted to join a community with the people who also love my new favorite thing. Murdle was the only thing making me happy through a dark time, and now it just makes me think of the people who berated me on Discord and avoided me on Tumblr.

I hate thinking of the book like this. I find it, needless to say, amazing in every way which is why I dedicate so much time and effort to it. Designing characters isn't easy. Writing isn't easy. I only wanted some appreciation for my efforts. I don't mind if people aren't interested in the cartoon. But the personal offenses are getting to be too much.

Ooh, I've got quite a few asks! This is a long one...

Aw, thank you so much! I've always said that I try to turn the subtext into text, but even doing that there's still plenty of subtext!

I come from a place of loving all the characters, so any mocking of them is gentle and light-hearted, but hopefully it has given people a different perspective on a few of them. A big part of the plot I've ended up writing is about loving yourself as you are, and not being ashamed to be true to yourself, and I think Hordak really exemplifies that as someone who very much struggled with that concept in the face of Horde Prime (someone who demands conformity). In that respect, he's very much a character I'm sure some people can relate to. Also I made him a largely incompetent evil emperor because that was just funny, so there's maybe fewer absolutely horrifying things he's done.

One of the advantages of this format is having more time to spend with the characters (I don't have to fit everything into 20 minutes), so that does mean we get more depth to people like Castaspella or the Horde Trio. That's not to criticise the original, there will always have to be side characters and characters who don't get much time, but I get to spend a little more time with them like this.

I'm glad you've come along for the ride, and I hope you enjoy the final week!

The "I care what she thinks" line had been in my notes for so long - in fact, I think the first time I wrote Entrapta's "We're enough as we are" back in Season 3, I knew this scene would call back to that. It is the full circle of Hordak's character arc, really - he went from trying to be what someone else (Prime) wanted, to someone that he wanted to be. And it's of note that he doesn't entirely reject the 'fuck what anyone else thinks', because he cares what Entrapta thinks - he's taken that and added his own spin to it: You don't have to be anything for anyone, but making someone you care about proud sometimes helps you become who you want to be.

@gardensofcrystals I'm so glad you could find some catharsis in this!

While I've not specifically written Prime as a particularly religious thing, the image I've had of him as some right-wing, anti-queer, anti-woman person isn't exactly a million miles from some types of Evangelical preachers, and I couldn't completely divorce him from that image because it was intended in the original - he's supposed to be an analogy to that kind of person.

His story is probably familiar to many people, who find something about their identity at odds with what they're told they should be. And that could be about sexuality with homophobic parents, or some aspect of yourself that's considered unacceptable by a religious or societal authority - I'm sure we've all had moments where we've felt we need to hide something about ourselves that we should never have to hide.

But whereas Prime will never be convinced that Hordak is 'good enough', my (admittedly limited) knowledge of religion is that God is kind of a loving guy and was quite hot on not being a judgemental prick to your fellow humans.

The boat arrives at the isles! FINALLY. Now the storyline can begin! Logico, Navy, and Sable step off onto the dock, and Lady Violet spreads her wings and greets them in a ceremony so big it looks like a wedding.

VIOLET: WEL-LO! WEL-LO, MY DEAR ASSOCIATES! LOGICO: “Wel-lo”?? VIOLET: I didn’t know whether to say ‘welcome’, or ‘hello’... so you know! Hello NAVY, and oh who are you? SABLE: Hi… VIOLET: Oh my god you’re such a sweetie. Here!

She hands Sable a drink, and she looks very happy. Logico trips over a body! It’s the captain of the rescue ship!

LOGICO: SERIOUSLY? This man just saved our lives!! VIOLET: Ew! A body?? I was just trying to celebrate! ;; NAVY: Nh… I feel sick already. I’m going to head back…

Then he sees that the dock is (somehow) on a cliff with a steep spiraling staircase that’d kill him to traverse. He stays put.

As Logico examines, he finds a sword in a fishing shack, an obvious murder weapon. Oddly enough, it’s broken in half, only the handle with a bit of a blade. It has an engraving on the handle - this is Lord Violet’s sword! Logico is incredibly intrigued - he wants all the lore he can get on this figure.

SABLE: I feel so much better now! <3 And… I have you to thank, Admiral Navy. NAVY: Me? I did practically nothing. SABLE: Well… not to me. I’m really grateful…

She takes his flippers lovingly and stares deep into his eyes. Suddenly, he roars! 

NAVY: WHY IS EVERYONE BEING LIKE THIS TO ME! I AM NOT LOOKING FOR LOVE ANYMORE, I’M DONE WITH THAT! IT’S TOO HORRIBLE!!

Sable starts to cry. Violet tucks into the fishing shack and clutches the Lord’s sword.

Still in the apartment, Irratino paces. He clutches his head and tries to send Logico a telepathic message. But can it even work if he’s not close? He sits on the bed and rubs his face, breathing heavily.

LOGICO: It was Admiral Navy! NAVY: That’s right! I didn’t like the look of that rival seaman, so I killed him.  LOGICO: You are the pettiest man alive! NAVY: And, having killed him, I have no reason to stay. And so, I depart!

He jumps into the ocean.

LOGICO: OH MY GOD, HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE GOING TO JUMP INTO THE OCEAN?!

Welp, looks like the walrus better learn how to swim, or else. Logico goes to see Violet instead.

LOGICO: Excuse me. My invitation doesn’t, by any chance, concern a dark secret on the island, does it?

Violet laughs kind of maniacally and jerks her head towards the shack. She looks back at Logico, super nonchalant.

VIOLET: No, of course not! I just wanted you to enjoy the holiday party with us.

Logico blinks.

LOGICO: Seems legit.

And he waddles after the princess.
