janiel and the romance of korean grammar?

aight so the thing about korean grammar is that you refer to members of your family (your mom, your dad, your siblings, your dog, your house) with 우리 (uri), which means we/our. so basically it’s like communism. if you’re joy hong you would call jay 우리 오빠 (uri oppa) with the english translation ‘my older brother’ and the literal translation ‘our older brother’. 

it’s the same for husband/wife, you would call ur husband 우리 남편 (uri nampyeon) and your wife 우리 아내 (uri anae), it’s like this bc you share them with your family? so basically yeah communism if you catch my drift. jay is joy’s oppa but he’s also steve hong’s son and kitae’s little brother. he’s part of the family whether you want it or not

this is not the case with boyfriends/girlfriends, because you call them 제 남자 / 여자 친구 (je namja / yeoja chingu), which translates to MY boy/girlfriend. yes. you do not share your bf/gf with your family bc they ain’t a part of it yet. jay has definitely accidentally mentioned daniel to joy at least once as “제 형석이” (my hyungseokie) and joy’s been like oh, he’s YOUR hyungseokie huh.

meanwhile daniel has accepted jay as part of his family (they celebrate chuseok together?? and chuseok is for your family?? i said this on twt already but daniel and jay deliberately spending chuseok together suggests that they consider each other family one way or another, hence on top of jay calling daniel “my hyungseok” i raise you this:

Sobrang bait at tino talaga ng itsura niya, ang sarap dumihan. Natampal mo na lang ang iyong mukha sa mga 'di kaaya-ayang mga bagay na tumatakbo sa isipan mo.

Bumaba ka sa kusina nang magtawag na ng hapunan ang ina mo. Maya-maya rin ay bumaba na ang Kuya Joshua mo na nakasuot ng plain white t-shirt at gray sweatpants.

"Kumusta ang pag-aaral, Joshua? Kaya pa ba?" Pabirong sabi ng ina mo. Maayos ang relasyon ninyo sa isa't isa, si Joshua sa mama mo, at ikaw sa papa ni Joshua. Maituturing na talaga kayong isang pamilya.

"Okay naman po, Ma. Mahirap pero kakayanin para sa maayos na hinaharap." Nakangiting sagot ng binata.

"Naku! Siguro may nililigawan ka na at iniisip mo na ang hinaharap?" Ani naman ng tatay ni Joshua na 'di mo man aminin, nagpasama ng timpla mo.

"Wala pa po, baka po rito kay Y/N, may nanliligaw na." Tumatawang sabi ng Kuya mo.

"Uy, wala ah! Kung ano-ano talaga pinagsasasabi mo, Kuya." Nakabusangot mong ani na ikinatawa lang nila.

"Wala namang problema sa akin kung may manligaw na sa 'yo, anak. Bente dos ka na, nasa tamang edad ka naman na, basta ipakilala mo lang kaagad kapag mayroon na, 'di ba Kuya Shua?" Sabi ng ina mo na tinanguan naman ng tatay ni Joshua.

Nilingon mo ang Kuya mo pero may kakaiba sa ekspresyon niya na hindi mo mawari. Nagbigay na lang ito ng pilit na ngiti at tumango.

Nagising ka sa mahimbing mong pagtulog dahil tila may nakatitig sa 'yo, at ganoon na lang ang gulat mo nang pagdilat mo ng iyong mga mata, pigura ng Kuya Joshua mo ang sumalubong sa iyo.

"What the fu—" Bago mo pa maituloy ang sasabihin mo, nagsalita na si Joshua.

"Sige ituloy mo, makikita mo, duduraan ko 'yang bunganga mo." Nagbabantang ani nito habang madilim na nakatingin sa 'yo. Ayaw na ayaw nga pala nito ng nagmumura ka.

"Sorry po, Kuya. Ba't po kayo naparito?" Nagtatakang tanong mo.

"Sabihin mo sa akin, ba't ako nandito? Panigurado alam mo naman ang dahilan." Sa malalim na boses, sinabi niya ito na nagsimulang magpakaba sa 'yo.

"'Di ko po alam ang sinasabi mo, Kuya." Painosenteng sabi mo.

"Hindi mo alam o nagtatanga-tangahan ka? Diyan ka magaling, 'di ba? Magpanggap?" Gusto mong matawa dahil alam mo, alam ninyong pareho na hindi lang ikaw ang magaling magpanggap.

"Ano naman 'yon sa 'yo?" 'Di ka na nakapagpigil at sumagot ka na.

Tila naputol ang pagtitimpi niya at dahan-dahang lumapit sa 'yo.

"'Di ba sinabi kong 'wag na 'wag kang makikipag-usap sa ibang lalaki? Hindi ba sinabi ko sa 'yo na sa akin ka lang? Pagmamay-ari kita, tandaan mo 'yan." Madidiin ang bawat salitang binitawan niya. Tangina, sirain mo ang buhay ko.

"Hindi mo ko pagmamay-ari, Joshua. Lumabas ka na rito sa kuwarto ko at magpapahinga na ako." Hindi ka nagpatinag at nilabanan ang madidilim na titig niya kahit alam mong hinding-hindi ka mananalo.

"Hmm, really? Hindi iyan ang sinabi mo nung isang linggo. Isang linggo ka lang hindi nabigyan ng atensyon, uhaw na uhaw ka na?" Nakangising sambit niya.

Lalo siyang naglakad papalapit sa 'yo habang ikaw ay nakahiga sa kama hanggang sa halos umibabaw na siya sa katawan mo.

""Kita tayo sa condo ko, kantutin kita?"" Napaigtad ka sa mga malalaswang salita na lumabas sa bibig niya.

"Tama ba 'yon, ha? Ganoon ba dapat ang salitaan ng mga lalaking kinakausap mo?" Doon mo nakumpirmang nabasa niya nga ang chat sa 'yo nung ka-block mo sa eskuwelahang pinapasukan mo.

"At ano, pumayag ka ba? Nagpagalaw ka ba?" Nagpipigil ng galit na tanong niya. Ibang-iba sa Joshua na kilala ng lahat bilang mabait at mahinhin.

"Tangina, sumagot ka!" Medyo kinabahan ka dahil bihira lang siya magmura at magalit kaya napasagot ka na lang.

"H-Hindi po, Kuya. Ayoko po sa kaniya." Tila nakahinga siya ng maluwag sa sinabi mo.

"Good. Kanino mo gusto, kung ganoon?" Tanong niya habang dahan-dahang ipinaglalandas ang mga daliri niya sa mukha mo papunta sa leeg mo.

"S-Sa 'yo, Kuya. Ikaw gusto ko." Nagmamadaling sagot mo dahil gusto mong galawin ka na niya.

"Kanino ka lang?"

"Sa 'yo lang, Kuya Shua." Binigyan ka niya ng nakalolokong ngisi bago ka tuluyang halikan. Hinding-hindi ka magsasawa sa pakiramdam ng labi niya sa labi mo.

"Ganiyan, tama 'yan. Kay Kuya ka lang, ha? Huwag na huwag kang magpapakaputa sa iba dahil hindi mo gugustuhin ang gagawin ko."

Mabait si Joshua, totoo iyon. Pero ang chismis na wala pang nakakaisa kay Joshua dahil sa sobrang banal nito? Doon sila nagkakamali. Dahil sa madilim na silid kung saan saksi ang buwan at ang apat na sulok ng kuwarto mo, gabi-gabi ka niyang binababoy. At gabi-gabi mo siyang sinasamba, dahil ang isang kagaya niya, nararapat lamang na luhuran at pagsilbihan.

A/N: Not really satisfied with this one. Thought of a better plot in the middle of writing this pero sayang naman so for another fic na lang 'yon. I'll give you guys a better one soon.

QUEEN OF TEARS

Masih dalam euforia drama Queen of Tears. Jujur aku nggak nonton drakor ini, hanya saja banyak content creator yang menjadikan drakor ini sebagai bahan belajar terutama perihal relationship. Aku yang masih jomblo dan sudah berumur ini rupanya semangat belajarnya lumayan tinggi. Berbekal curiosity saja, pikiranku bisa bercabang kemana-mana, menganalisis tiap quotes dan adegan yang muncul dalam video-video pendek yang muncul di timeline medsosku.

Entah apalagi yang ingin ditunjukkan oleh jiwaku, seperti ada sinyal tertentu sampai aku menjadi emosional. Sekedar nonton sekilas video pendek Hong Haein dan Hyunwoo kok bisa bikin air mataku bercucuran. Lebay nggak sih. Tapi aku mencoba berdamai, mungkin karakterku serupa dengan salah satu tokoh di dalamnya, entah sebagai Haein atau Hyunwoo.

Aku sadar bahwa kepribadianku adalah melankolis plegmatis, mirip Hyunwoo. Dia plegmatis karena cenderung menghindari konflik. Bahkan daripada harus berkonflik dengan Haein terkait hubungan pernikahannya, dia memilih untuk "udahlah cerai saja" yang justru membuat dia terlibat konflik lebih dalam. Alih-alih terhindar, malah dapat bonus masalah lagi. Yaaa, Hyunwoo mirip denganku. Juga, kadang aku merasa seperti laki-laki. Why? Karna aku lebih memilih menceritakan masalah ke orang terdekat ketika aku sudah berhasil mengatasinya. Dengan kata lain, iya aku berjuang sendiri dalam hidupku. Tuh kan, mirip kayak laki-laki nggak sih?

Aku adalah perempuan yang apapun masalahnya, hal-hal yang membuatku overthinking, cemas, takut, semua ku atasi sendiri. Pendidikan, kesehatan, karir dan sebagainya, beban-beban tersebut ku panggul sendiri. Tipe mandiri yang susah minta tolong meskipun tau kalo dikerjakan sendiri sangat berat. Baru minta tolong kalo beneran udah nggak kuat yang sampe oleng gitu. Sulit percaya orang lain terutama laki-laki. Bahkan aku sempat berpikir bahwa sendiri pun aku bisa kok, tanpa pasangan pun hidupku baik-baik saja. Hey nggak boleh gitu hey! Astaghfirullah. Kadang saat terlalu cemas dan takut, badanku bereaksi sampai bergetar, deg-degan dan keringat dingin. Sudah dua kali kejadian demikian. Kehidupan romantisku juga menyedihkan hahaha. Bagian tersebut yang membuatku merasa seperti Haein. Aku jadi berpikir apakah sebenarnya aku tipe koleris juga? Who knows? Padahal, menyenangkanku sangat mudah, bilang aja "kamu mau kemana aja, walaupun bisa sendiri, aku temenin". Tambah mleyot kalo "whatever happens in this world, don't worry, i'm here with you" hahaha.

Aku bahkan nggak mengizinkan diriku untuk menjadi vulnerable, di dalam keluarga sekalipun. Sakit pun harus "nggak boleh lemah". Iya betul, kultur keluarga memandang tangisan dan tingkah manja sebagai hal yang tidak lazim dan menggelikan. Menangis bagi mereka bukan hal yang penting. Pasca jatuh atau sakit hati pun, hanya akan terdengar suara "lemah amat sih gitu aja nangis, gausah nangis loh, tinggal diobati ntar kan sembuh lagi". Kaaaaaan? Padahal di situ ada hal penting yang nggak terlihat, apa? Emosi. Tiap orang perlu merilis emosinya, kalo sedang sedih ya nggak ada salahnya kok nangis, mau laki-laki atau perempuan gapapa nangis.

Perihal emosi lain pun sama. Seharusnya gapapa marah, sedih, kecewa, kesal, dan rasa-rasa lain itu ditampakkan. Bukankah anggota keluarga lain juga akan bisa belajar bagaimana memperlakukan seseorang dengan berbagai emosinya? Alih-alih membantu menenangkan malah membendungnya. Siap-siap aja deh ntar jebol tuh bendungan. Udah kejadian di ponakan saya yang sampai depresi. Itu kan perkara pengelolaan emosi. Huuft.

Aku yang melow ini, nontonin video pendek aja bisa nangis. Aku tandai quotes QOT yang aku setuju dengannya:

Jomblo begini aku udah mengkhatamkan banyak kelas pranikah meski jodohku belum ketemu haha. Memproyeksikannya saja aku setuju bahwa pasangan atau suami istri, mau bagaimana pun kondisi dan sesulit apapun ujiannya, harus tetap di satu tim yang sama. Jika pertahanan internal kuat, seberapa pun berat ujiannya, insyaaAllah akan lebih mudah dilalui. Lalu, apakah jika bersama atau mempunyai pasangan akan bahagia? Jawabannya adalah tidak selalu bahagia, namanya juga hidup, tiap emosi punya namanya masing-masing. Setidaknya, akan less miserable. Saling mendukung, tumbuh dan berkembang. Bukankah kata Allah juga ketika bersama, ibadah akan lebih mudah (dibandingkan sendiri).

Semua itu perkara ridho Allah. Jadi, di akhir tulisan ini, aku berharap jodoh pilihan Allah. Huhuuu aku terharu dengan apa yang ku baca dan tulis ini. Sesederhana itu bisa membuat aku nangeeeees.

anyways so jiho would be there too because he gambled all his money away. daniel and jiho would get along at first because both of them are the weakest among all participants...

johan would be there to get the cash needed to fix his mom’s eyes, and he’s also been recruited by gun. in the game dorm, he meets an old man(yes, this au’s oh-il nam) who he recognizes as the pastor at his mother’s church, and he puts down his guard (cult stuff has not happened in this au so dog boy isn’t that vicious, but he’s still isolated himself from the people who care about him because he doesn’t want their pity arghh)

WORKERS :

yujin is the frontman! mandeok and cap guy are his bodyguards, and class-traitor samuel does his dirty work.

the affiliate ceos would be among the vips who fund the squid game.

one such vip is mitsuki, who comes to watch the squid game upon the request of her bestie vivi (another vip), and immediately becomes obsessed with player sinu han. she goes as far as to plead with yujin to not shoot him fatally if he ever loses a game, because she wants him that bad

steve hong gets a whiff of this game when his eldest son and heir kitae receives a vip invitation and thus, he sends his most disposable child jay to investigate the game as a worker lmao

daniel gets his perfect body inside the dorm, and knocks out a worker to take his place. he immediately becomes close to jay, and is soon promoted to executive kitsune (all due to his hard work and not because yujin suspects him. nope, not at all.)

executive kitsune is the favourite of recruiter gun (also a vip), and is entitled to all sorts of favours…

vip dg who’s a mastermind at playing all sides (he’s with steve, the workers, and god only knows who else) catches onto the connection between game player og daniel and executive kitsune, and starts keeping an eye on him hmmm

absolute heartbreak but… the jiyeong and saebyeok “thank you for playing with me” scene… only with sinu and jake. jake LOSES it as sinu says, “jake, thank you for playing with me,” and the gun goes off.

not to worry, sinu’s alive and his wound is treated effectively as per neko’s instructions. she wants him for herself and supplies him with the amnesia/memory altering drugs, but executive kitsune who has struck a friendship with sinu and jake in his original body, saves him by discarding the meds.

like saebyeok, jake gets stabbed in the glass game, but is saved by the rest of big deal, and becomes one of the workers. he’s devastated and wants to avenge sinu by killing gun, because of whom they ended up in this hell…

doo lee is executive hanya in this universe and unfortunately one of its creators too (he feels guilty as hell don’t worry), and he informs jake of sinu being alive on executive kitsune’s behalf. so now, jake and big deal WILL get sinu backkk

also lmaoo sinu gets the shock of his life seeing samuel dressed like a kdrama ceo, which is a far departure from the shonen protagonist image of his, complete with a mullet, back in big deal.

crystal is a vip and a double-agent like jay, because her father charles and yujin hate each other's guts. 

jiho’s juvie metamorphosis may happen because of the need to survive the uncontrolled violence in the dorms. he’s still jealous of daniel who’s popular with literally everyone.

I ALSO VIVIDLY IMAGINE THE GLASS BRIDGE SCENE WITH DEOKSU AND MI-NYEO, BUT WITH DANIEL TAKING DOWN LOGAN (unlike minyeo daniel is saved because of protagonist halo and plot armour yass)

THE MARBLE GAME SCENE??? but between jiho and the hallucination of his former self, to whom he loses the marbles and gets shot…

johan’s betrayal in this au is when the old pastor is revealed to be a creator of the game, and just when all hell is about to be unleashed, zack finds him.

in conclusion, i want daniel and the others to make it through squid game with the power of love and friendship. none of this makes sense but a massive thanks to everyone who tuned in until the end.

In what way did a book enchant you? How did a book embrace you warmly like a true friend? I have a few little stories about how I met some books.

Relativitas - Adi Purnomo

Around 2016, I went to a lovely bookstore in Bandung. I 'scanned' the bookshelves with my eyes while pointing them one by one, hence I found this book. The old version has plain black cover with a tiny title written in serif font— "Relativitas". Kind of mysterious, wasn't it? I read, then it changed my life. I switched my hobby from drawing to writing ever since, as we know drawing is an essential activity in the design field.

Manuscript Found in Accra - Paulo Coelho

Once a year, faculty of fine arts and design in my university holds a book fair. I could get various books at discounted price there including this novel. Just like everyone else, I admire Paulo Coelho's writings because of The Alchemist so I bought Manuscript Found in Accra with no doubt. I read it about a year or two years later, however, it's among my top 5 books of all time.

Homeless - Liyana Dhamirah

I scrolled through a well-known bookstore website from Singapore, finding the right books. I looked at Homeless, then I decided to have it on my Kindle. This book revealed the reality of Singaporean housing, where actually some individuals still couldn't afford home so they should live in a temporary tent just to survive. It left a lasting impression on my mind, but the bookstore has officially closed due to a scandalous issue.

Nunchi - Euny Hong

After 11 years apart, I reunited with my secondary school friends. One of them shared his recommendation— Nunchi —and lent me the book. After I finished it, I honed my awareness at the office, when I met pals, and in the end it all makes sense. We're able to "read someone's mind" if we "take a closer look" at the situation. I influenced several fellow readers to read it, and they acclaimed Nunchi as a life-changing book as well.

Nocturnes - Kazuo Ishiguro

Such a meet-cute— my favorite library in town has a dedicated corner for Kazuo Ishiguro's books. Nocturnes, instead of Never Let Me Go or Klara and the Sun, captivated me because it's a compilation of short stories about music and nightfall. I fell in love with it easily.

1. gun park as loid forger 

spy man from foreign country (pretend he’s japanese) sneaks into new country (korea) under disguise to stop a war (the 4 crews) by assassinating military advisor (charles choi) of the president (steve hong)

has multiple names: spy name ‘white oni’, previous names include ‘yamazaki yuzuru’, current given name is ‘park jong gun’

currently works as bodyguard and fake husband to idol singer ‘dg’

does not know real identity (mercenary) of his fake husband

2. dg as yor forger

sweet and angelic by day (idol dg, real name kang dagyeom), won’t hesitate to shed blood and commit violence by night (james lee / ‘legend’)

is most often hired by charles choi to do his dirty work but cannot disobey bc charles choi has dirt on him (committing violence and breaking the law)

hopes someone will destroy charles choi for him so he can finally be free

does not know real identity (spy) of his fake husband

3. daniel park as anya forger

age 5 to start with, was orphaned after mother passed away and father (park jinyoung) was arrested for conducting illegal experiments on kids

is adopted by gun park first, but dg also warms up to him, which is great bc he now has 1) two doting parents 2) life like a spy kdrama

psychic due to pjy experiments and has excellent common sense but is academically a bit of a dumdum. math is his worst enemy

knows secret identities of both parents but they don’t know he knows

4. jay hong as damian desmond

second son of the president but does not hold a candle to his superstar hyung kitae even tho he’s smartest out of all jae won prestigious elementary school first graders and probably could handle third grade homework

gun originally wants daniel to befriend jay to get closer to steve hong and then charles choi by default, does not expect the father son relationship to be so terrible

falls in love with daniel at first sight when daniel punches kid zack (re: damian Anya Can Do No Wrong filter) but suffers from extreme social anxiety so he comes off as tsun a lot

5. others of note

zoe as becky: adores daniel like a blood brother, idolizes dg

goo as franky: the fun uncle! but horrible with kids

kouji as handler: brings messages from the big boss but is more chill about things.

eugene as yuri: unhealthy obsession with knowing what dg is doing all the time. onesided childhood friend of dg

the rest of j high squad + johan: the rest of janiel’s class. issues crop up, daniel solves those issues to make friends in the name of world peace, dg wonders how such a bully like gun managed to raise such a sweet son

crystal: charles choi’s middle school aged daughter + hi bye friends with kitae. hence the jay to kitae to crystal to charles choi pipeline (aka gun’s plan 2 for Project Friendship)
