Yesterday I posted about Blackie, a 6ish week old Manx kitten suffering from what is termed Manx Syndrome, and the kind decision to euthanize him (https://www.instagram.com/p/CdezNOdMyfP/). Today we had to do the same with his sister, Froakie (so-named because Manx Syndrome had hit her a little harder, making it so that with much-longer back legs, she literally had to hop like a frog in order to be mobile). Her genitals were difficult to differentiate from her anus, and during the exam the veterinarian discovered that she, too, had deformities much like her brother: no formed rectum or anus, simply a hole at the end of the large intestine, with the end of the vertebrae exposed inside of it. Froakie was completely incontinent in both bladder and bowel, which necessitated the use of a diaper and frequent cleanings; and also had an exposed spinal cord - a deadly and horribly painful death just waiting to happen, probably weeks if not days away. She was put to sleep around 6:30pm this evening. Rest in purrs, Froakie. You were loved, you were important, you will be missed, and we are happy knowing you're free of pain. Rest in peace, Blackie. You were loved, you were cared about by so many, you were wanted by so many, and you will not be forgotten. Your life mattered. 🖤 * * * Today we made the difficult but right decision to euthanize Blackie, the black male Manx kitten. Upon intake we had difficulting sexing him because of urine- and feces-matted fur covering his genitals, and even after cleaning we had difficulties because of abnormal presentation. As the week has progressed, it became clear that Blackie was suffering from both incontinence and megacolon. And when we took Blackie in today, we discovered that his spinal cord ended INSIDE his rectum -- where his feces exited -- and that he did not an anus. Please, for Blackie, for his sister Froakie who is having struggles of her own, and for the countless other Manx/Bobtail cats out there who suffer, DO NOT SUPPORT INTENTIONAL BREEDING OF ANY CAT. Deliberately mixing defective genetics simply because of a desired visual outcome (a lack of tail) reaches so many levels of disgusting that I don't know where to begin.
