For our fifth and last story, to be published on April 23rd, @kloperslegend (writer), @hgandmyka (beta) and @niftybottle (artist) will present you this:

For the first time, Investigator Myka Bering isn’t content to let a case slip away when the feds pull rank. No, not when one of the vics is a family friend, and certainly not when all signs point to a vulgar blend of compromised ethics and venture capital espionage.

As she pursues the two murder cases in secret, it becomes clear that the feds may not be trying to solve the crimes at all. Worse, her findings point to a weapon so foul, so impossible, that even just thinking about it makes her start to feel crazy.

Oh, and Myka’s primary suspect? A single mother by the name of Helena Wells.

Having survived a career change, a trans-Atlantic move, and a divorce, Helena Wells is more than capable of taking care of herself— or at least, she thought she was. But after being attacked in her home, Helena is experiencing strange gaps in her memory. Worse, her daughter Christina is complaining of terrifying sounds in the night.

Myka Bering is used pulling truth from crimes that resist reason. That's what Police Captain Nielsen brings her in for, after all: to consult on cases that are too slippery for a clean solve. But this new deluge of bodies is too inconsistent for obvious handholds, and as she pursues the murderers in secret, her findings point to a weapon so foul, so impossible, that even just thinking about it makes her start to feel crazy.

Oh, and Myka’s primary suspect? A single mother by the name of Helena Wells.

Hey! Great to see you're back on here!

It's great to be back! It pained me to leave Tumblr the first time, and it pained me to leave Twitter back in April, because I like writing, first and foremost, and I enjoy writing when there's likely to be an audience, even if it's only a theoretical audience (and realistically, with social media, our audience is entirely theoretical. While everything you write can be seen by however many people follow you—and potentially more, if it's shared and re-shared—there's no guarantee that every one of your followers will see a given thing you post, and that if they see it, they will read it). Both Tumblr and Twitter afforded me the opportunity to write for a potential audience, and I was without that from April 25th to the last week, or so. I really missed that.

A difficult transition coming back is that since I left Tumblr, I moved away from using Chrome and now exclusively use Safari. Chrome has extensions—one of which is Xkit. Safari has nothing. Xkit used to let me reblog things with the touch of a button, as opposed to pressing the "reblog" button, then seeing a new window pop up, then pressing the "reblog" button again... Ugh. It also automatically added an asker's user name to the tags of every single ask response I wrote. Now I have to do that by hand!

But, these are a small price to pay to come back to a place I love—a place so poorly understood by the outside world that the Wall Street Journal actually believed I had the third most popular Tumblr on the site. I feel I am home once more, and I couldn't be happier to be back in the ball pit.

Chapter 2: Red Coat Marine with the lovely @kloperslegend

She's an exhausted senior, she's a... ground intelligence officer?

They’d picked her out early. Day one, as soon as they’d been separated into their platoons. The tall, bulky man she’d come to know as Sergeant Instructor Walters skimmed down the list as he paced up and down the line of presenting candidates. When he got to her, he squinted at his clipboard before snapping his small eyes up as he walked past. “Harvard huh… You’re not too good for us, are you, Harvard? This ain’t the fucking Ivy League. ” 

And then Beatrice had opened her mouth. A simple, “No, Staff Sergeant,” had the hulking man spinning on his heel and coming back to her. 

His face inches from hers. “You fucking with me, Harvard? What the hell kind of accent is that?” 

“No, Sir. I grew up in London, Sir.” 

“Well, I’ll be damned. Looks like we got a regular Benedict Arnold.” Beatrice knew better than to correct the Sergeant. She really, really did. It didn’t mean she didn’t want to, though. She’d been called worse by her parents, but being singled out like this didn’t sit well with her. “And I’m not a Sir! Get on your face.” 

She had listened, immediately dropping into the increasingly familiar pushup position as she yelled, “Aye, Staff Sergeant!” at the top of her lungs . 

This particular morning, there hadn’t been any ‘ pushing ’ yet, though Beatrice was sure there would be at some point. She hadn’t done so many pushups in her life, and she’d only been here for three days. 

But the running part? This part, right now? She looked forward to it.

In less than a mile they came to a stop in the worn, patchy grass in front of the old line of pull-up bars, with their yellowing stale tape and rust. It was hardly a warm-up, but that didn’t stop several of her classmates from needing to catch their breath with their hands on their knees, only to get scolded.

Though ‘scolded’ was maybe a bit mild for, “Have you never gone for a fucking jog , candidate? Are you telling me you can’t lug your fat body here from the squad bay without wheezing like a little pig, candidate? Don’t worry. We’ll fix it.”

Beatrice had no idea how the Sergeant Instructors still had voices, considering how much they yelled. Come to think of it, she wasn’t entirely sure she’d yet heard something that wasn’t yelling. She’d even heard one of the candidates whispering something about how they practice yelling at trees… an entirely unhelpful image to have in her mind as she tried to keep her ‘military bearing.’ 

Noise was something she was starting to learn to tune out to a degree. If the yelling wasn’t at her, she found a way to let her mind wander, usually to other things they needed to know, what she needed to be doing, material they needed to be reviewing—with what little sleep they were getting, even seconds of memorization review was priceless. 

While her classmates were getting smoked in the grass next to her she looked at the aged pull up bars. A distinct path had been worn through the grass between the pavement and the bars themselves, and the concave impression in the dirt beneath the bars betrayed the passage of many feet. 

How many Marines had used them? Certainly every officer since at least Vietnam, maybe even before that. And then the line from that to the legends they had already been getting told about, like some sort of combination between service folklore, bedtime stories, and genuine awe at the individuals. Those legends must have touched these, too, or ones like these. People many hailed as heroes had stood where she stood. Done the same things she was doing. 

She’d naively thought her parents' expectations were impossible shoes to fill. They couldn’t even be measured on the same scale of the expectations she was facing now. 

And these expectations had purpose.

A Bering and Wells Writers Panel?!?

Hey everyone, especially those of you who used to write or are still writing Bering and Wells fic:

Would you be interested in a panel on fic writing during the Zoom meetup on the 23rd? One writer (who also has published novels) has already contacted me saying they're interested; I'd love to open this to more people who might want to weigh in on such topics as:

what's your fic writing process? (and if you're a published author too, does it differ between fic and originals?)

how do you make sure you keep your characters in character?

where do you find your inspiration for fic?

what, to you, is the pull of writing fic (for Bering and Wells/in general)?

what's the fic you're most proud of and why?

I am going to be so bold and tag writers who I know are here on Tumblr, with the question of if you'd be interested in being a panelist; it's definitely going to be in a US-friendly timeslot, probably an hour or 90 minutes long, and moderated with pre-prepared questions as well as a slot for questions from the chat.

I've seen all of your posts and I'm really not sure, honestly, how your take managed to escalate into you being basically publicly thrashed. It's not right. And I at the very least want you to know that there are people in your corner that understand your perspective. Though frankly the original argument and the behavior of the people arguing are two different issues. Sigh. Anyway, well wishes to you, friend.

truly my point was that i and other lesbians are upset about this and it’s okay that we are, and i do recall myself explicitly saying that i knew there were lesbians that felt differently and had no intention of stopping them?? and that my problem was with non-lesbians claiming ownership or deciding what was okay and wasn’t.
