Today, the fourth edition of the Kochi Muziris Biennale kicks off. It is the biggest contemporary art festival in Asia. I have been going to KMB from the second edition onward. This is the fourth edition. The mention of an art event paints a picture of a high society gathering, flowing champagne, prim on proper crowd, swanky galleries. Basically a place or an event which seems inaccessible to most of us. Well KMB is anything but that. The art installations are done in old colonial buildings, cafes, old ware houses. The entrances of some these venues are so non assuming that you might have to point out that there is a art event going on inside. The colonial and rustic setting adds to the whole arty vibe. Spread across multiple venues across Fort Kochi, there will be around 100 artists from all over the world, on display this time. The event is supported by a lot of young volunteers which gives it the a very young and dynamic outlook. There is a huge range of themes and styles of art in display. The event also has a lot of ancillary events with local artists, the youth and children. There are talks, discussions, seminars, movie screenings. It's all happening there. The last two year of being at the KMB have been absolutely amazing. Fort Kochi itself has to provide such a huge array of things to do even outside the KMB. And the food scene is just awesome. On top of all these, add the proximity to the sea, which enhances all the experiences, except for the humidity may be. The KMB is on from today till next year March 29. So you have a lot of time to plan. I will be going there sometime early next year. Closer to march Kochi starts to warm up a bit so earlier is better I feel. William Kentridge is a South African draftsman, performer, and filmmaker. Best known for his animated drawings, the central focus of Kentridge’s oeuvre has been to examine the years before and after apartheid. The artist conflates his autobiography with that of fictionalized characters to relate his narratives, rendering his signature expressive, gestural drawings in black charcoal and ink. More Sweetly Play the Dance have a cast of silhouetted figures stepping and dancing in line to the sounds of a brass band – a terrific one at that – across the video installation’s eight screens. The figures carry objects made from cutouts of Kent’s drawings, including portraits of historically significant figures, cages, plants and an array of human belongings.
