Monster Boy: Evolution of the environment art style
When European and Japanese influences come together. Lead Artist Johan Lun with interesting insights.
When we started the project, our game references were essentially from the games on Super Nintendo (Zelda and Secret of Mana) Mega Drive (Thor and obviously Wonder Boy in Monster World) and other rpgs of that era, with the visual ­aspect that was so typical of Japanese ­video games of the ‘90s. We really wanted to make players aware of this tribute.
Once our publisher FDG Entertainment joined the project, we were able to develop and devote resources to the game ­graphics, and therefore called on several concept artists to enhance the game backdrops. The first, Benjamin Dupouy, brought lots of ideas and created new environments in a style that was different from what we had up to then. He not only created new concepts such as the crystal caverns and the forest, but also redefined the overall build of the levels while placing elements in the foreground to add depth. He had a more mature and European graphic style which was less Japanese. At that time, we still hadn’t decided on the style we wanted for the game or the final atmosphere. We had to dismantle the linear and rigid aspect of the settings to achieve a more ‘organic’ look.
A second concept artist, David Cicerone, joined us who brought his extensive experience of manga in a style that was somewhere between Europe and Japan and heavily influenced by Dragon Ball Z. In addition to creating the logo for ­Monster Boy, he also used slightly distorted and ­exaggerated forms and infused lots of colour and dynamism into the settings. We had been a tad restrained up to that time and had stayed in the classic realm without breaking too many boundaries, but a new game identity was now born. The environments had been updated and transformed the levels. The beach and the hut looked outdated, and were totally ‘revamped’ and we created more objects and décor ­elements to get closer to the Wonder Boy universe. David managed to create an illusion of richer and more vibrant settings.
The early version of the inn was inspired by the first versions of Wonder Boy, with the flat sides and classic doors with no perspective; a rather functional house, but with no soul. The new concept was devised by Alexandre Le Saux, who brought his own style to it. He deconstructed and rebuilt it and pushed the design further, which tended more to the American comic style (Warcraft). He added numerous details compared to what we had up to that point (small fork on the table, bucket next to the door and the hammer in the forge, etc.).
We then ended up with a game that ­contained a range of influences; a huge mix that posed a problem, especially as the rendering of the textures was as varied as the many different artists who had worked on them! The graphic inconsistency was clearly visible, however, and we had to find a consistent style, a logical link between the different game environments and, at the same time, the graphic designers had to integrate all these concepts into the ­numerous levels in the game (over 350). They also had to create elements while ­adhering to the spirit of the artistic ­concepts, and this created an even wider gulf between the different styles already present in the game.
The inn evolved from a concept with flat sides and classic doors to a more American comic style.
From Wonder Boy to Monster Boy Lizardcube released Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap in 2017, which was a pure remake of the game Master System with a highly stylised redesign of the graphics. The game was visually really appealing, inspired by the comic genre with traditional animation. This Wonder Boy influenced the artistic direction of our Monster Boy, but we had to find our own style and create distinctive graphics, and this important realisation was crucial.
We developed our idea and took a step further by looking for an artist who could help us; someone who could come up with the style we were after. And that’s when Alina Latypova joined our team.
Alina had no experience of the video games world but had been creating backdrop designs for animation, with classic inspirations from Disney to Pixar through cartoons from the ‘80s to the present. The atmosphere and texture of her work was incredibly good, and her first job was to integrate existing settings, and she then, of course, made improvements to certain levels. She implemented her vision on the houses and lighting in the village backdrop.
Alina then designed the last concept art for the haunted house and the last dungeon herself. The graphic style in the different levels had again become inconsistent, and we still had to harmonise the look. We asked her to rework specific levels that were too dissimilar graphically, and the forest, the prison, the castle, the mines, the waterfalls, the underwater world and the beach were revamped. She brought a great deal of volume and substance to all the backdrops.
We were lucky to find someone with such great talent who was also a quick worker! She didn’t just redesign the forms, light and the colour, she basically added atmosphere and a visual identity to the game; she had provided the tone and we had found our graphic style! We then replaced all the decor elements and hired graphic designers who were able to internalise and reproduce her graphic style. Her arrival in our team was an amazing event, and we hoped the game graphics would stick in the minds of the players as much as they impressed us. We really wanted players to feel they were progressing and moving around in a cartoon as opposed to a classic video game.
The difficulty for all the artists who worked on the backdrops of Monster Boy was to use drawings to justify the mechanisms of the level designs, and this can be quite abstract. We had to find logical solutions to implement flying platforms, for example. The challenge was to make sense of the various locations to ensure the player immediately knew what to do. The mechanics of some areas were very complex, and involved deep research to establish the composition of a scene, and forced us to find the right idea that worked with the level. This is precisely where the connection between the level design and the artistic aspect is forged. It’s also the most interesting part for the artists, as you have to decide what setting you will create to justify certain mechanisms. You’re forced to be very creative and generate numerous ideas to make the whole thing believable. One of the tricks that appeared frequently in the Monster Boy levels to convey information to players was to place statues everywhere!
Following the redesign of the environments in late 2017, we then realised that the hero, Jin had not kept up with the settings; he wasn’t in sync and looked out of place in the game. We decided to review all the game characters and had to take a year out to redesign all the sprites in a traditional animation style.

Here’s some animation I did for Tokkun Studio last year. It’s a cutscene for the game Zodiac: Orcanon Odyssey, which was created by Kobojo. 
I included all my roughs for anyone interested, but I also did the clean up and coloring on this sequence. My old boss actually gave me the freedom to improvise the motion in a few of the shots. At the time I’d never been given that chance, and I’ll be forever grateful for it.
