“Ronan?”

A pause.

“Ronan, it’s dark as shit out here. If you’re on this roof and you don’t answer me, I swear to God I’ll cut you up and feed you to Chainsaw.”

Ronan heard Adam take two hesitant steps onto the rooftop, obviously wavering between his desire to look for Ronan and his reluctance to violate university policy.

“Ronan, it’s been a long fucking night, and I would really like it to not get any longer.”

Ronan wanted nothing more than to keep his mouth shut and let Adam leave the rooftop to look for him somewhere else. He wanted nothing more than to be alone in the frigid November night, waiting for the wind to either fuse his broken pieces together or buffet him until he shattered. But then Adam called out his name again, his voice cracking on the last syllable, and Ronan might have been a fragmented disaster but he was not going to be the one who broke Adam Parrish.

“Should’ve gone to Blue’s Thanksgiving after all,” he said, pitching his voice loud enough to be heard over the wind.

Adam’s laugh was just about the last sound Ronan had expected to hear. “Not a chance,” he said, and suddenly Adam was standing next to him, setting a paper bag down at Ronan’s feet and tugging a soft hat over Ronan’s frozen ears before he had the chance to protest. “I told you—her mom always burns the turkey.”

There were people in this world whose behavior made sense, and then there was Adam Parrish. “It’s not like you even got a chance to enjoy ours,” Ronan said, not quite knowing what else to do.

“What do you think is in the paper bag?” Adam responded. “Let me just text your brothers.”

“Parrish—”

“I won’t tell them where we are. But I think Declan would appreciate knowing that he doesn’t have to keep searching the town for you.” He paused. “Also, I told Gansey that he didn’t have to come, but he’s still probably putting on his god-awful boat shoes as we speak.”

“Gansey knows?”

“It’s not like I could have found out about the roof from anybody else,” Adam pointed out.

It might have been a guilt trip. It might have been a statement of fact. Either way, Ronan couldn’t fault his logic. He just watched as Adam took out his phone and started typing in silence, leaving Ronan to reach into the paper bag and pull out plastic Tupperware containers and Gansey’s expensive silverware. By the time he’d sorted out knives and forks and napkins, Adam had settled in next to him. Ronan handed him a container and listened to Adam fumble with his cutlery for a few seconds before he gave in and turned his phone’s flashlight on, resting it against the air conditioning unit behind them so it would illuminate their dinners without blinding them.

Adam didn’t comment on the flashlight, just opened his container and ate a piece of turkey. “Just like I thought,” he said. “Not burned at all.”

“That makes one thing,” Ronan muttered before he could stop himself.

Adam raised an eyebrow. “Oh, are we talking about this now?”

Ronan started carving divots into his mashed potatoes with his fork. “Isn’t that why you’re still up here?”

“I’m up here to spend Thanksgiving dinner with my boyfriend,” Adam replied, looking at Ronan with eyes too sharp for the muted darkness to conceal. “But I do have an entire container of food to eat and nowhere else to be.”

For a moment, Ronan considered waiting to see just how long Adam’s patience would hold out before he gave up and left. But then Adam kept looking at him—intently but not expectantly, letting Ronan steer the conversation in whatever direction he wanted—and Ronan remembered that he didn’t actually want Adam to leave. With that, he sighed and let his fork slide into his mashed potatoes. “I really wanted you to see the roof under better circumstances.”

ma lõpetan kunstikooli mõne nädala pärast (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) see on olnud nigu terve igavik. ma astusin sinna 16-aastaselt ja nüüd ma olen 20 ja oijumal ma olen tuhat korda ennast ümber defineerinud ja pahupidi pööranud selle aja jooksul. ma käisin kunstikooli spektri mõlemas ääres ära, olen olnud kümneline ja kaheline, käinud välismaal projektidel ja visanud tireleid ja andnud endast kõik ja siis visanud keskmiseid sõrmi õhku ja nutnud vetsus ja mõelnud milleks üldse. aga samas, see koht ja see tee oli ainuõige valik. nii pidi olema.

ma läksin kunstikooli mõistmata kujundusprogrammidest mõhkugi ja nüüd ma olin kahes päris kõval levelil disainiagentuuris praktikal 2 kuud tallinnas, mis oli päris tuus...  ning selle piirikompamise käigus ma vist leidsingi enda oma. vnoh, kas just piiri, aga ma tundsin, et pole sellest tainast tehtud, disain ja kujundamine on mulle südamelähedased, aga õhtu lõpuks ma olen ikkagi üks joonistav näss. see on natuke nagu taak. et ma ei saa millestki muust küllastust. et see ongi mu energia. see protsess, millega mu aju tegeleb. ma tõesti tunnen, et ma OLEN vähem, kui ma ei saa filtreerida ümbrust läbi silma ja käe paberile. või misiganes materjalile. ja see.. tunnistamine võttis nii kaua aega! täiesti jube kui kaua võib endaga peitust mängida! aga selleks läkski kunstikooli ja kogu seda tantsu ja tralli vaja. i will smash myself until i’m whole jne.
